Anyone else notice that it won't charge from a computer? (well monitor) With my Aria i ran a USB cable from my monitor at work to the phone. the monitor wasn't connected (USB) to the computer, and it would just work as a charger. Doesn't seem to work with the atrix. anyone else able to confirm?
more info. does in fact charge when connected to a computer. but due to security reasons the company does not want phones connected to the companies. That is why i was using the monitor. Going to have to look into why it doesn't work this way for this phone. or just buy a longer cable and use the wall plug.
Mines actually not charging when connected to my laptop, wall is fine. The phone recognizes that it has a usb connected, but it doesn't charge and battery state still reads as discharging.
Also wondering if this is an issue for anyone else
Mine charged extremely slow from my PC and my laptop, the wall charger does it much faster.
USB ports on a computer don't usually provide enough voltage to charge a phone as fast as they normally do when plugged into the wall. My motherboard actually has a piece of software that supposedly enables phones to charge faster when connected to a USB port, but i have yet to try such a feature.
I've had my Atrix plugged into my computer for roughly 3 hours now, and so far it's gone from 30% to 60%.
I wouldn't be the least bit concerned if it was charging slowly, it was actually lower after unplugging than it was when I plugged in, and no charge symbols appeared. But if I plugged it in the computer saw it and soon as I unplugged the message popped up saying low battery please reconnect charger, and when reconnected it went away.
But there was no charge symbol and under battery status it said discharging.
Now I just unplugged from wall charger (worked fine first time) and plugged back into laptop, its charging fine so hopefully it was a one time thing.
Ah, so thata what it is; I have had mine on here for a while now and im still at 60.
Rooted/ROM Captivate
Rooted Atrix
When i first plugged mine into my desktop computer, it wouldn't charge at all. I then installed that motosoftware that came with the phone and after it finished the phone started to charge, but very very slowly.
Every computer ive tried works fine.
But when i plug it into a wall charger(not one that came with atrix) it starts freaking out lol. "unplug to save energy!!" flash on & off 3/second...atrix charger works fine tho...lame
You need the driver off the motorola site to charge the phone from your computer.
Yea, computers work, monitors don't. I'm guessing that the USB hubs in monitors don't have enough juice, even though they did for my Aria.

I am on the road a lot and don't want to be carrying the HTC charger with me. For my Treo, I had a foldable USB AC adapter (.8A and 5V) to which I plugged in a Sync and Charge cable and it did just fine.
After reading all the comments about there being two ways to charge a Tilt - fast and slow, I decided to test out a retractable USB data cable with my USB AC brick. I set the option in Power to "Not charge the battery when connected to the PC." and plugged it in. Nothing. I then unticked the box and sure enough, it started to charge. As I was at 70% of the charge, I expected this to drag on, but it didn't. It took about 1 hour and was fully charged.
I'm still a bit worried about charging this way - the description of the Lil Sync cable for the Tilt says that while it might work, under certain circumstances it won't if your battery is below 30% of a charge. Has anyone seen this happen? The last thing I want is to go away for a few days and be stuck with a dead batttery.
Do I need to pick up a special cable from ppctechs or boxwave just to charge? Should I just carry the supplied charger?
I always charge my kaiser just using the sync cable and it works fine even from a flat battery. there seems to be absolutely no need to carry an AC adapter around when you can just connect it to a computer to charge.
Thanks Spooki. Just curious - how long does a charge usually take when you charge against a computer's USB?
it seems to take roughly twice as long as a wall charger but i work with PC's all day so doesn't really bother me, much easier than carrying a charger around.
Totally stock (but i don't think it matters).
Plug the phone in, orange LED comes on.
Hold it or place in on the counter five seconds later, LED is off.
Had the phone since 6/4.
Anyone else having issues?
Are you using the AC charger ? I have two Evos and one of the chargers does what you are describing. The orange LED comes on and then goes off after a while and the phone stops charging. Does it on both phones, the other charger works fine with both usb cables.
Are you using the USB charger with a computer or laptop or plugging straight into the wall with an AC charger?
This does make a difference because if you are charging with a USB + laptop combination you could be suffering from the computer going to sleep and disabling the USB ports power to conserve laptop battery life. If you are having the issue when plugging into the wall, try plugging into a computer and selecting the "Charge Only" option when your USB debug comes up. Once it does this, allow it to charge for a period of time and then turn the phone off, switch to AC power plug and see what happens.
Perhaps you had some kind of over voltage spike on the charger through the AC plug. I could see it possibly tripping something in the phone to stop taking charge to protect the handset.
Also make sure if you do use a laptop, use a USB 2.0 or better port. More power and faster connection. Gotta love it.
Your charger may not be sourcing enough current anymore (for whatever reason). I have seen the exact same behavior with USB car chargers that were only sourcing 100-150mA.
Have you tried plugging the USB cable into a modern desktop PC? (Some laptops have reduced current ports, so a desktop is a safer bet)
Its definitely a current issue. I tried to charge my phone using my bluetooth headset's wall charger, but I got the behavior you are describing. The bluetooth headset's charger just doesnt put out enough current.
Are you using the charger that came with the phone? if so, you may want to exchange the charger...
im having the same problem when i connect it to my desktop, it sees it for about 2 secs n then disappears. My computer at work has no problem seeing the phone. i wonder if i need a driver or something for my usb ports, anyone have any ideas??

Probably not a driver issue, but that that rail from the power supply is either undervolted (say 4.6V instead of 5V), or can't provide enough current (amperage) or both. If I recall correctly, the Evo needs 5V @ 1A (+/- 3% tolerance).
Phone not charging
my phone has been charging fine since I got it... even been using the night desk clock app while sleeping at night for the alarm with it plugged in... everything was good...
With my phone about to die today, I plug it in to the wall charger, the led/batter indicator shows that it is charging... then POW.. it says I have a low battery and it needs to be plugged in... WTH??? it is plugged in!
The only thing I did today was flash the new boot.img for the cap fix over in Toast's thread...
Weird thing now is that I took my hero battery and put it in my EVO, plugged it into wall charger, and it stays charging... So, I put my EVO battery in my hero, plugged it in, and whola... it's now charging...
Please help as I am baffled.

that's your problem right there. that custom kernel is known to have charging issues.
I'm having the same issue with my car charger consistently. Plus my AC charger less consistently. For example, I'll go to bed and plug it in, the next morning I wake up and see the phone is at 80% charge and isn't charging. At some point over night, it gave up. This is with the stock charger too.
So, i've tried charging my phone via computer twice now and every morning i do, i wake up with an all but dead device. While it says it's charging, it doesn't seem to do anything more than simply keep the device at minimal operational levels of energy. Anyone else experiencing this???
older computers and charging through a hub will cause this.
with my focus, it takes about 3 hours to charge fully using the computer or about 2 hour to charge using the included charger.
This happened to me last night
I have now had my phone 6 days. Each night, I have charged it by plugging into my computers USB port, so that I can sync that days podcasts. On each night, it has fully charged by the time I wake up in the morning.
This morning, I unplug the phone from the USB cable, and I notice that I only have one bar on the battery meter. I checked the USB cable where it plugs into the computer, and it appeared OK. I unplugged the USB cable from the computer, attached it to the wall plug adapter, and plugged it into the wall outlet. After about an hour, it looks like it has charged a bar or so.
So, maybe I just didn't insert the plug very well. Maybe. Crap.
Most PCs turn off the USB port during sleep. If that happens, your phone battery will be drained by the PC instead of charging.
Newer laptops now carry USB ports that will not turn off during sleep or off for the purpose of charging.

Perhaps, or it is not your fault and simply a bad cable.
Hello everyone. I just want to start off saying that this is NOT a question about USB charging. I know about the trickle charge/lack of voltage stipulations. This is about the factory A/C adapter and USB cord I got with my transformer.
About 80% of the time I plug in my tablet to the A/C adapter, literally nothing happens. The screen doesn't turn on while in sleep mode like normal, the battery in the bottom corner doesn't change to a little lightning bolt, and most disturbingly, my tablet will not charge. The weirdest part is that it connects to the computer through USB no problem. I can move files and such, but no charging. Any ideas?
the charger construction is marginal at best and may need to be wiggled to get a good connection. also the usb connector an be plugged into the charger incorrectly. remember the usb connectot on the supplied cord does not comply s
with the usb spec. Also chev
ch the country ac side adapter ther are also unreliable
My cable went screwy and now it only trickle charges, regardless of what it's plugged into. I've got an RMA for it, but since I have to send them the cable to get a replacement, I'll have a paperweight for a few days at least.
Are you sure yours isn't trickle charging? There wouldn't be a lightning bolt, but I does charge.....very slowly.
Unplug the AC adapter from the wall for about 20 minutes. Plug it back in. Plug in TF.
Charging now?
unplugging it for a while seems to work better than anything. I'm pretty sure there isn't any trickling going on.
You can also try using the charger for your phone if the plug is a USB type. There have been a lot of problems with these charges documented in other threads.
Unplugging it definitely isn't a solution for me. When it first started happening I could do that and after a little while it would start working properly again, but now, it has charged at normal rates in about 3 weeks. I'm going to send it in with the RMA, but I have no idea what the turn-around time is. I'm going to be without any way to charge for that time, which pisses me off just a little bit.
Anyone else notice the phone randomly doesnt charge when plugging it into the computer?
The battery will say charging, the lock screen will say charging, but the battery screen will say not charging and the graph will show a green charging line but draining battery. Replugging the phone in fixes it. I havent had an issue with the wall charger.
Theres nothing wrong with the USB ports, it charged my other phone fine and it charges this phone when it works.
my N4 charges fast when I plug it to my laptop. I connect it to my USB 3.0 port..
PCs aren't designed to charge phones. It may work for a dumbphone with a 500 mAh battery, but it doesn't have the amperage to charge a smartphone efficiently. The charging adapter that comes with the phone is 1200 mA (milliamps), a computer USB port only provides 500 mA (on USB 2.0). On USB 3.0, it provides 900 mA, so it will charge faster, but not nearly as fast still as the 1.2 amp travel adapter.
On top of this, the phone is constantly using battery power while on, so it is very likely that when the screen is on and you are using the phone plugged into the computer, the phone is drawing power faster than the computer is charging it.

That is not what Im talking about. It says charging everywhere except the battery screen where it says not charging, that is obviously a bug. A computer can power a phone fine anyways, they are made to be powered by a USB port.

I had this problem today. The battery was dying fast (Average for this one) and I had popped it into my stereos USB, The battery didn't show the charging sign.
WTF? So I switched to the "Cigarette lighter port" and with a different cable plugged that in. No go. Held in the power button to simulate a battery pull, Still didnt work.
Turned it off, Went back to work and three hours later getting ready to drive home i plugged it in. The phone was getting warm, But the battery charging sign never popped up. I turned it on and the left side (By the sim card) was getting ultra-hot but betterbatterystats said the battery was only feeling at around 101degrees (Normal for this small sun). A minute later it was highly uncomfortable to hold (Just near the sim card area), I thought the battery was going to catch on fire like those youtube videos.
I power cycled once again, the battery charging sign popped up and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Seconds later the phone ****ing flipped its wig, It kept making the charger plugged in sound and vibrate every half second. I about had a stroke, Thinking it's going critical. ONE MORE POWER CYCLE, Everything is normal.
My earlier experience seemed similar to yours OP, Let me know if your phone melts your hand off and goes all bi-polar like mine did.
I'm having the same problem. It has nothing to do with a computer not being powerful enough to charge it, especially when they aren't even being used such as overnight. It has charged every other smartphone that I've used. It will say that it is charging on the lockscreen and on the settings pulldown but it will just constantly drain battery. I will put it on the charger before bed and wake up 8 hours later and it says it is at 86% with a steady decline in battery. This only happens when connected to my iMac and not when plugged into a wall outlet.
I wouldn't think USB 3.0 improves the charging speed at all, since the protocol still uses USB 2.0
I just remove all the cables and replace them. It seems to solve it.
Same with the AC adapter. I noticed sometime it would say charging USB when I switched. I just unplug everything and plug it back in and it goes back to normal.
/shrug
I havent noticed it getting warm, it just doesnt charge even though it knows its plugged in and is supposed to be charging. It works after replugging it in.
It also seems to charge abnormally slowly.
I wonder if the issue with the phone not working right with Nokia chargers (constantly disconnects and reconnects) is related to this. It may not have anything to do with the Qi standard because the phone just doesnt charge right period.
