[Q] Please help me to choose a ROM? - Vibrant General

I just got my Samsung Vibrant 4 days ago. It has a JI6 Elcair (2.1) build. I have done rooting and backups so far. Now I need to decide which ROM to flash. Currently the GPS takes 4-5 minutes to lock, so I would like to improve the GPS functionality. Also I'm confused about this: with a 2.1 system currently on my phone, can I only choose those custom ROMs under 2.1, or can I choose those under 2.2 as well?
Thanks a million!

You ca't go wrong with anything team whiskey puts out. The great thing is you can try them all out. And yes you can go from 2. 1 to 2. 2.
Look at my signature to see the combo I use.

Ditto... Bionix is a beast and theres plenty of themes for it, and I did the jump 2.1 straight to bionix V with no issues at all gps works great too

to tell you the truth...depends on your taste....
like if you want it to look good and stuff with decent performance. go with trigger or something by the einherjar team and jallete.
now if you want mad speed and performance but stock themes go with team whiskey stuff
last if you want good performance and decent visuals go with axura
p.s. It's my opinion and im not insulting anyone or any of our developers... they all rock it just depends on ur taste

Trigger combines beauty and speed.

I push everyone to Trigger.. I added back the KB1 though, I prefer it over KA7.

I just flashed to Bionix now. Everything was smooth except for one problem: none of the 3rd-party applications I installed before are seen now under titanium backup (I thought I backed them up). How can I restore them? Are they lost?

Didn't find those app's there. Maybe I didn't back up those app's! Big mistake...

If you dont recall backing them up, then yes... good chance.
Make sure you dont have a filter on (menu > Filter)

Open app
hit menu -> preferences
scroll down to backup folder name, hit that
rename that from TitaniumBackup -> external_sd/TitaniumBackup, hit OK
exit out of app and reopen it
are your apps back at this point? check batch and run restore missing apps?

The exact same thing happened to me, after backing up an app I uninstalled it rebooted and tried restoring it, it just kept saying zero applications need restoring even tho the applications were clearly not installed AND they were in the titanium back up folder.... Backed up using astro instead. Much more reliable in my opinion

i think Bionix-v 1.2.1 is a good choice

It's possible that there is a problem with busybox in Titanium. From the main Titanium screen, click the box at the bottom that says "problems?" and follow prompts.

I just flashed nero 5 and it is fast. Snappy Fast! I downloaded the gps restore app from market and it seems to be working fine for me.
I love axura and all the pretty themes but I must say nero 5 won me over with keeping touchwiz and having uber speed preformance.

Flashed my 1st ROM today (Very Exciting:) Have a ?

Today I flashed my 1st ROM (MYN's Warm 2.2) very exciting and exhilirating. I also downloaded HTC Kernel #17. I used Unrevoked 3 to get superuser and used My Backup Pro to backup. I used this guys instructions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvWcIBcZvxw
Everything seem to go fine. I did what he said and wiped Dalvik and Cache after I installed Myn's ROM. Will that automatically install the HTC Kernel #17 after a reboot or do I have to manually do that like I installed the ROM in Recovery. Also what does the Kernel do? I follow you guys alot on XDA and you guys are VERY HELPFUL. Thanks for any help
Also, what are some other cool ROM's. I can see this becoming an addiction
Myn's ROM comes with the HTC #17 kernel already, so you don't have to flash it. If you'd like to install a kernel though, it would be flashed the same way as the ROM.
The kernel is the primary system components of the OS.
Thanks for your quick reply. After I installed Myn's ROM I wiped Cache and Dalvik again, will this hurt me and will I need to install MYN's ROM again. Everything seems to be working fine.

Everything is fine. The Dalvik cache is built upon first boot of a new system. You wipe it after installing a new rom to remove the remnants from the old one. You can wipe the dalvik as much as you want honestly, it's just going to make your next reboot take longer because of having to build the dalvik up again
Cool. Thanks. This whole flashing ROM's is pretty darn cool.
Welcome to the club!
Myn is a very popular ROM for good reason. Another popular ROM is CyanogenMod 6.1. It is missing 4G and HDMI at the moment, but the team is working on getting those included. A lot of people swear by it!
I have heard about CyanogenMod 6.1, but keep reading good things about MYN's Warm 2.2. So far so good
No need to change if you are happy with what ya' got!
I know a dude who has the Fresh ROM and when he turns his EVO to landscape and if he is ion Apps, they will turn landscape as well. That's really nice

I just flashed my first last week, I think I flashed my 4th ROM this past w/e but I wound up going back to the 2nd one. I've tried the following ROM's if you're interested??:
- MIUI (12.3) Awesome ROM, imho, but it was somewhat buggy still related to MMS, receiving voicemails and 4G no worky. It DOES have some really cool features built into it that most other ROM's you'd have to download the app for it's features.
- Evo NonSense (3.3) I really like this ROM too, somewhat similar to the stock but has a cooler look and like the way it navigates via ADW.
- Myn (RLS4) I liked this ROM but, honestly, was a little let down by it's simple layout, I think the hype I've been reading about Myn ROM's got me a little over anxious........lol.
- CyanogenMod (6.1) I think I had this one up and running the shortest, it didnt really do much for me but I will admit that I think I was in too grumpy of a mood possibly so I might try it again. The biggest reason for it's short lived existence is the lack of 4G, like a few others above.
I wound up going back to Evo NonSense just cuz I like the way it navigates around, the slide lock screen and overall look/appeal of it. I'm about to upload it's latest version.....

Man, thanks for that explanation, I was unaware of it's importance since I didnt know what it really did.
Not to raid the O/P thread but I think the answer might benefit him as well. One thing that I've noticed jumping around different ROM's is that I lose important information cached in my Apps. Is there anyway to recover that information from the back up and reinstall on a freshly installed ROM?
For an ex. I use PasswordSafe Lite to store all my important pw's and account info......I just noticed when I sync'ed up to AppBrain the information is gonzo.......is there anyway to avoid this from happening or backing it up or actually getting into a backed up copy to copy n paste that data in???
TIA!

that's pretty normal. I don't think the early Sprint roms did that, but I think the later ones do. Also pretty much any other launcher you install will do the same thing.
I keep hearing about launchers (like launcher pro). What do they do and do you install them like a ROM? What is a good Launcher?

They allow you to use a different launcher other than sense, which means you can customize it to your hearts content also you can do landscape mode which is what you are after. Launcher pro and adw are the most popular I prefer launcher pro but try them both out for yourself also they are both found in the android market which means you dont have to flash them like roms or kernels GL man if you need anymore help pm me bro
Thanks bro. I just dl'ed Launcher Pro. Will try it out. I do LOVE that loop scrolling. That's really cool
Edit: Quick question. One of the main things I like about HTC Sense is the Flip Clock with My Location and Temp. I don't see a Clock Widget for Launcher Pro. Is there a clock like this for launcher pro? thx
You want fancy widget my friend. Sense style clicks for launcher pro. You can get it in the market.

This ROM is eating battery quickly I have the 3500mah battery and as soon as I take it off of AC Charge it drops 5% in a matter of a couple of minutes and drops 10% in about 10 minutes. On stock it would take about an hour to drop 10% (this is all without doing anything). I am doing the same as before, nothing has changed other than I put on this ROM. Anyone have any suggestions?

Which Rom?

Hey guys im coming over from the captivate and they have some nice roms on there. I was wondering what the best rom for Droid X is? im Not looking for total speed im looking for usability and functions. also Is there a tutorial on how to do it? i remember using Clockwork on Captivate
First your gonna need the droid x bootstrap which you can get from the market to load a rom. Are you rooted? As for a rom I've been running gummyjar and I am very happy.

I like gummyjar right now too, but if you like stock, load up apex. I was using apex before and it is very good.
I like the aosp feel of gummyjar better personally because I used to use a nexus one with cm. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with apex or gummyjar.

This doesnt really help haha some say gummy others say apex. anyone have experience with both? ill read up on both of them now and decide.

do either of these build maintain the voice control that is stock in the droid x? I recently switched to the droid x from the droid and one of the things I most love is the voice control over bluetooth works and is very good. This is the one feature I'm most not wanting to loose.
Also I'm having a bit of a problem. I rooted my phone. I installed rommanager and loaded clockwork. Then I tried to backup my rom but the phone just reboots. I went into rommanager and tried to reboot into recovery and again it just reboots.
Is this a known issue? I have not dug around too much on it. How do you reboot manually into recovery on the droid x.
thanks
I am a long time phone flasher, and the ROM that I have had on each phone in the past has just been flatout horrible. So in anticipation for receiving my new DroidX phone in the mail, I started amassing tools and rom file downloads, and bookmarking how-to pages (since every phone flash process is different)...then I got the actual phone I realized that the stock ROM is amazing. Of course, I am coming from a VX6900 that ran Donut via NAND, but I still do not see how the stock ROM could be any faster.
I use Advanced Task Killer, that automatically kills apps when the screen backlight goes out and at any given time when I turn on the phone, I always have 200MB or higher in free memory. I guess I need to know if anyone else has run the stock ROM with Advanced Task Killer, and would still describe it as "slow". I would not describe this as slow...I am literally never waiting on the phone to do something, it keeps up with everything I do, and I have installed about 30 apps/games, I swipe back and forth between apps a lot and use the back/home button quite a bit without closing things. So while I REALLY want to flash, I cannot find a good reason to do it (which is actually a first for me since owning a flash-able phone).
If anyone can weigh in I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

What a terrible article. No empirical evidence at all...just opinion and conjecture based on....what? Nothing. The user's conclusion is to reboot your phone multiple times a day or just uninstall any apps that do not come with the phone. Is he serious? Since I installed this specific task killer app (yes I tried a lot of them) I only have to reboot my phone about once a week. What a poorly written article. No research at all.
I will definitely try the custom rom route. I can always go back to stock I guess.
Fission, Apex, GummyJar are all great options. I have backups for all 3 of them.

Holding off on GB

Am I the only one who is holding off on GB?
I personally hate flashing. I try to do it as little as possible. I like having a smooth stable ROM, and as long as it's stable, I'm pretty happy.
Right now, I'm tempted to flash mainly because I'm having issues with my GPS getting a lock, but I know as soon as Liberty releases a GB ROM, I'll want to reflash.
It's just a pain to me to wipe, install the rom, redownload apps (I have horrid reception in my apt and WiFi has always seemed buggy), reset ringtones, notifications, app settings. It's just a pain in the behind, so I try to do it as little as possible.
I see all the Gingerbread hype, I'd just rather wait for Liberty or Apex GB.

I also have been waiting but this is because I have bricked my phone beyond repair once and gotten to the point where all I could do is sbf twice. And if you haven't done it, SBF'ing is a pain in the ass. So I like to make sure that things are going to work before I try it
You could always use titanium backup for your app settings, also you won't have to redownload your apps each time. I jumped right to gingerbread as soon as I could, and I'm loving it. I've never had a problem with flashing roms. Really not that big of a deal to me.
If you want to hold out, that's on you, but believe me, it's well worth the upgrade. MotoBlur on gingerbread is really quite bearable, and it's growing on me.

See now, I didn't know that Titanium backed up apps...I'll have to read up on it. I too haven't flashed because I hate redoing my setup. I like the idea of a couple of GB features though (like the sliding text editor ) so its been tempting.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Yeah, Titanium backs up apps, but more importantly (or just as importantly, I suppose), it backs up application data too, so then you have settings maintained across roms. It saves everything to your SD card so you'll always have it. Also, if you like to save text messages, search SMS Backup & Restore in the market. It's free and very useful.
In my opinion, using Titanium free becomes tedious, and it's well worth the money for the pro version.
I've been using the new Gingerbread rom, extremly stable and fast. I can't imagine the speed with out the bloat ware.

I am waiting. No real hurry to flash anything. I've tried Liberty, Apex, etc...I like the stock rom with root and Launcher Pro ..I obtain the best battery life using it and controlling the cpu/battery/voltage the way I want.
When GB OTA comes out I will update it. Not sure how my phone can get any faster...everything opens and moves instantly now..especially with Launcher Pro.
Bone stock with 2.2 I was hitting 1450 with Quadrant benchmark, 2.3 stock I am hitting 1750. Nice!
Messaging widget is cool. Some other nice stuff also.
IM waiting for more work to be done to it.
The only thing I backup is Angry Birds Scores... 3 stars on all levels and all golden eggs !
I don't really need to save settings otherwise, other than ringtones. I just hate reconfiguring it.
I guess I just don't have a whole lot of stuff to tinker with things like I used to. I might wait for the OTA as well just to make sure I don't have any issues like others did when they used the leaked SBF.

What, you don't think any developers are gonna play with it?
After reading of all the "issues" with GB (rooted and non) on various sites, I'm thinking I'll just wait for DS 4.3 or even DS GB! I'm currently using Rubix Focused but that's mainly because the email app in Rubix works with my Hotmail account and the dialer actually knows how to enter my VM password after it connects. I really like DS and miss it but I've grown spoiled not having to read my Hotmail messages twice. I'm toying with the idea of replacing the email.apk in DS with the one in Rubix but being fairly new with the Android stuff, I don't know what that entails and how bad I could mess things up (though I guess I could SBF and reinstall (and yes, I do have several backups)). All the stuff I'm reading makes me think that GB is not quite ready for prime time, but again that's my exceedingly humble opinion.
I have seen on numerous forums all the " how do I fix" questions. I will wait. I will flash when the dust settles. Liberty 1.5 is really smooth right now. Just my 2cents.
Tappin from the Tee Box
I am just glad that GB is out. I will wait for the over the air, and then for it to get rooted.
Untill then, rubix focused 2.0.1 kicks butt. I don't mind flashing, but I remember when froyo dropped and everyone was sbf'n and having problems etc.
patience, when there is a Rubix like Gingerbread rom, my X will be complete
Titatnium won't restore a bunch of stuff on GB.
Don't rely on it to do your restore. Almost every application had to be re-downloaded from the Marketplace.
Lost all my game settings.. 8-(
Also if you like NFS, it doesn't work.
Also OliveTree Bible reader doesn't either.
Home switcher is broken, if you like to run multiple Launchers.

Titanium won't restore some system data because the version increase. Otherwise, it restored all of the applications that I had backed up.
If you like to run multiple launchers, use Home Smack. Seems to still function well in GB.
This GB leak isn't quite ready for prime-time, but is very good. Noticeable performance increase, and I was already having a good time with Fission rom. I can't wait to see how fast it is when developers kill the blur bloat.

You guys should check out this script V6 SuperCharger !! HTK & BulletProof Launchers!
I'm not sure that many of you know about this script... I recently ran into it.
XDA Thread Link. It's called V6 Supercharger. If you wanna read all the nitty gritty go for it. I'll just tell you what to do for those that just wanna jump to it. It is developed for the Milestone, but memory configuration works about same.
Get this file right here and rename it so as to remove the .txt extension (it was added to allow upload on XDA).
Now move that file into your SD card.
Open up [or first download if needed] Script Manager.
Run the script that you have in your SD card, and be SURE to check 'Run as Root' as WELL as 'Run at Boot'.
When the prompt comes you can read the different presets there are. However, I strongly suggest going with just typing 2 and press enter. It will fix your current memory groupings and put your default launcher as priority 0 with apps and stuff at 2 [meh not exact but something like that].
Then it will tell you to reboot after all the scrolling of text. Do, so. I swear I don't ever get a single lag spike anymore.
THANKS zeppelinrox
(I had nothing to do with this script, just referring you guys to it).

I wonder if this will fix the launcher lag on Virus ROM B .1.1 someone try it out and post back results.
Yeah, I'm interested in the Launcher part, because regardless of Android version or rom, ADW and LP always freeze on me whenever I restart the phone.
It typically fixes itself after a force close so it's a not a huge issue, but it'd be nice to get rid of it.

Messed up my stuff a bit. Had to undo. Oh well.
End of line.
Although sense seems to be smooth on the kingdom port after running this script my apps seem to be really laggy. Like the Xda app, when I'm scrolling it studers a lot. I'm pretty sure it had a little lag before running the script but i don't believe it was no where near as bad as it is now. Is there any way of undoing it without reflashing the ROM? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it had a little lag before running the script but i don't believe it was no where near as bad as it is now. Is there any way of undoing it without reflashing the ROM? Thanks.

Run it again and one of the options is to undo the mod

are you sure you checked off 'Run as Root?
read throught the OOM (out of memory) mappings within the script and try a different memory range. I would say try option 1 or 3 then... But there are 3 others with less aggressive groupings.
Hey...when does this have to be run again?
Obviously not after reboots, after wipes??, after flashing??
How do U check that it is in place?
thanks

Good question, I'd think if you only wipe the caches it would still be there but that's just a guess. Won't hurt to run it again though.

I tried this a few nights ago and it just kept crashing script manager.
Cool

[UPDATED] V6 Supercharger NEW UPDATE!!! (beta, but not really)

Just in case you weren't aware, zeppelinrox recently pushed out update9 for his inSANE Supercharger script.
It adds a few cool new features, 1 being the Nitro Lag Nullifier, which many claim increases their phone speeds even MORE than the fixes in Update8. I just tried it a little while ago, and noticed my phone loaded up quick and apps open even quicker now.
Also includes an Engine Flush feature that gives you a quick boost, just like the one you get after you reboot and notice all that extra freed up RAM. Does the same thing w/ No Reboot.
ALSO included is LOCKING ANY APP IN MEMORY, which is definitely useful for many. (haven't tried it yet).
Here it is ladies and germs --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15948434&postcount=1127
I love these scripts this is the first one I tried on ec05 and wow. Fast and smooth

Make sure you reboot your phone at least once a day if you do the Nitro Lag Fix or Engine Flush. It works very well at first but it may cause lag without reboots

I have been jumping around so much that I may need to review but I believe it is a Cache flush and without reboot once a day (it says it when you run the script) it builds up and causes lag. I didn't experience it because I battery swap once a day. My friend did and yanked the script

That seems to make sense, thanks for the info. I've also been noticing my scheduled titanium backup hasn't been running each morning (04:00am) like it's scheduled to.
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the script as well, or if it's something else. I originally had the script on option 9, then just the other day I changed it to 6, a more balanced setting. I may just remove it completely and see if the backups start to happen when they're supposed to.
The SMS backup I have set to run runs when it should, without fail. I was thinking that maybe the script was killing TB, but since the SMS backup is working, maybe that's not the case?

I think you are dead on here. I pulled it for the same reason last week. I added it back yesterday though. I dont know what determines the priority of app killing but I notice certain things getting killed myself. I may have to dig into this some more because I am testing a kernel and I dont want any conflicts that I could possibly say is kernel related when its not.

Why don't you try using the new option to make any app "Bulletproof" on Titanium? That should do it if it works as advertised.
Otherwise, choosing a less aggressive option than option 9 (especially option 6) should do the trick. I also stay away from the MegaRAM options myself...too hardcore. I feel like a smartphone is meant for multitasking, and this script, if you use it right, makes it even better.
Try running options 2 and 11. Those have been working great for me since I started using them. I used 6 at first, but 2 is just a little more aggressive without really noticing it, so it's more effective. Then 11 just for kicks lol..does no harm

@JC - I just pulled it off myself, to see if it will run tomorrow morning.
@Franky - How do you enable an app to be 'bulletproof'? I have looked around a bit, and haven't found it yet. I may give that a shot, or just set it to different settings using the script as well. I'll certainly take yours into consideration.

couldn't tell you...i haven't used it myself. all i know is that there's an option for it when u run the script. I ran it to see how it worked, and it just detects the apps currently running and allows you to lock any one of them in memory. Not sure how/if it works
I am looking for an app that you can freeze apps that start by themself. Does Titanium Pro cause the phone to trip out or reboot? When I use Bloat Freezer I get the random vibrations and an occasional reboot. I have Autostarts, Bloat Freezer,etc...what do you guys recommend? Sorry for being off topic
