Cannot boot into recovery or make backup - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am new here, and have learned a lot through lurking.
I can't seem to make a back up, or even boot into recovery. Everything works fine, until I get a screen with a small cartoon of a phone, with an exclamation point inside of a triangle, and nothing happens until I take the battery out, and reboot.
I'm not sure what this is, do I need s=off?

To make a backup, you need to be rooted, you need S-OFF, and you need ROM Manager to flash the Clockwork Recovery.
If you're going to do that, I also suggest you also manually flash Clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.6, since it can flash both Froyo ROM's and Gingerbread ROMs. It's not exactly necessary, but it saves you the extra steps and makes your life mcuh easier.

I forgot to mention, I am permrooted, and have flashed clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 through ROM manager. I've had this problem before all of this.
I just want to flash CM7 and have gingerbread. I cant seem to understand exactly how to do this. I've been researching for a few weeks now, reading many guides and watching videos, but I always get stuck at this same screen.
EDIT: I have s=on. I just checked. thanks

[Q] myTouch 4G Recovery Issues! Please Help!

I checked through 100s of post tonight and could not find the answer to this and am in need of some help. I attempted to install a Cyanogen Nightly tonight through Rom Manager with no prior knowlege of the issues with CW 2.5 vs. CW 3.0. Stupid I know.
So natuaraly, when the download finished and Rom Manager tried to install, my MT4G just hung at the white boot screen. Through previous posts, the directions were simple to reflash the previous CW Recovery through Fastboot and reflash the Rom.
Well thats where the problem is.... When I attempt to flash ANY Rom earlier than 3.0.0.5, it will say OKAY in CMD, however the phone will never boot into the Recovery. I even tried fastboot erase recovery then reinstalled and still nothing.
So i decided to go a different root and reinstalled 3.0.0.5 to see if there was any work around through there. After i install 3.0 through Fastboot, I am able to go into Recovery, however when I select ANY option no matter what, the hat and the gear icon stay in the background and nothing happens.
I am very confused and lost and am hoping someone here will have had the same issue and can help me get my phone back in order.
Thanks in advance guys!

I havent had that issue exactly, but I might be able to help wlk you through getting this fixed. Ive had problems more than once myself on recovery, and helped a couple others solve other issues on here. If you want, add me on google talk (same username as on xda), and Ill walk you through it. Might have to wait till the morning, though, as Im probably gonna head to bed soon.
Fastboot 2.5 recovery and reflash froyo rom. If you decide to install CM7 again - read, search and make sure that you understand what you're doing. It has been stated at least few dozen times that Rom Manager is useless with gingerbread until Koush updates it.
Same Issue??
I believe my issue sounds similar.
I tried to go from Iced Glacier up to CM7. When I did I attempted to use the Clockwork Recovery 2.5 and of course it didn't work. Then I tried to upgrade it to 3.0.0.5. Now when I try to reboot into Clockwork recovery the phone just stays on the MyTouch 4G splash screen. The only way to get around it is use the Power/Volume down button and click on FASTBOOT and then select REBOOT.
The phone then boots in Iced Glacier. I have redownloaded ROM Manager and attempted to FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. But it still won't load into recovery.
Essentially I need some step by step help to get back to clockworkmod recovery. I'm not too worried if I need to wipe everything. Just looking for the ability to restore again.
Alternatively I'm interested in upgrading to CM7 but not sure how I could do that without recovery working. I would also ask if you can give step by step instructions it would be much appreciated as I'm still pretty new to this.
Thanks!
I also have the similar problem. I have installed the Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 and have rooted my phone before i was trying to install the gingerbread version. I made a recovery backup. i tried to restore the phone with that backup image but it still hung up with that "t-mobile mytouch " white splash screen.
What should i do now ? i have no idea how to bring my phone back to life :/

Sounds like both of you should of never of done this. This has been discussed a few times, and the end result is always the same.....
Download the correct Recovery image (which can be found in the Development section) and install it to your phone by using the ADB commands, in the fastboot mode. you can find a quick and painless way to set those up in my signature. Once you have installed the recovery image you can boot into hBoot and select recovery. from there you can flash CM7 and the gapps. Once you have done all that download the official clockwork ROM manager from the market and flash his current recovery image.

[Q] Stuck on my Touch Splash Screen

Hi, I have rooted my phone and have s off. I've purchased rom manager and installed clockworkmod 3 and have backed up my phone.
When I try to flash the latest cyanogenMod Nightly I run into problems.
The phone gets wiped and updates and then it gets stuck at the Tmobile my touch splash screen. I've left it there for 10 minutes and still no cyanogen.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Also I'm able to go back into recovery mode and restore my backup. So my phone is currently back in stock rom.

If you successfully backed up your phone you are not using Clockwork ROM Recovery 3.x. It's a well known fact that that Recovery image has problems backing up Nandroids, or restoring them for that matter.
What color was the text when you were in recovery? Orange or green?
Its Green, so I have clockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2
So I need to update to the 3.x and I should be good?
Also to do a successfull back up of my nandroid I go to "backup and restore" and then select "backup"?
Thanks again for your help

if you are wanting CM7 yes you need to flash Clockwork ROM 3.0 via the Fastboot ADB commands. If you are wanting your phone to work you can flash of any of the other ROMS as of right now.
Clockwork ROM 3.x will not do nandroid back ups in it's current state. As Gingerbread comes closer to being an official or RC i'm sure they make sure it can do nandroids. nor will 2.x do nandroids of CM7. but to answer your question you are correct.

You are correct. See my thread here For the easiest way to install 3.0.0.5. And yes you can use Rom Manager for backups while on 2.5.1.2 but Rom Manager isnt compatable with flashing or backups for 3.0.0.5. You must use recovery.

I rooted, made a back up with Clockwork ROM Recovery 3.x. , flashed CM7 and everything was fine. Then I flashed Kernel_2.6.32.27grankin01-CM-GB-OC-v0.09 and when I unlocked the screen everything started force closing on a black screen. I locked the screen again, powered off and on again then it got stuck on the splash screen. I restored my back up and it's stuck on splash screen still. Then I tried to flash Kernel 2.6.32.21grankin010OC0v0.05 thinking my back-up might need a stock kernel. I am a super noob at this, I have successfully flashed roms to my tab before, but I've only been learning about this for about a month. I've been searching and searching but can't seem to find a solution. Am I screwed?

IMHO opinion you are not screwed.
When flashing custom Kernels you need to have a program like SetCPU so you can govern the CPU speed. To fast of a speed or to slow of a speed and it will not boot correctly. You need to flash a different version of CM7 than you are using now, via the recovery screen. make sure to wipe the handset first. that should reset the Kernel to one that Zinx knows works with the phone.
As well i wouldn't recommend flashing kernels with Nightlies. They are unstable as it. and you need to make sure the kernel is compatible with Nightly you are using. And you can over clock them to 1.5Ghrzf from w/ in the ROM.

[Q] Help Please recovery problems rooted stock rom

Okay, so where to start...
I have a MT4G (of course) i love it dont get me wrongand wanted to mess around with it. i permarooted it via VISONary + and everything was working fine. i wanted to flash a different kernal and wanted to do a nandoird backup before i did anything else. but i needed clockwork to do this (correct me please if im wrong) so i downloaded rom manager flashed it. and went to boot into recovery and it does this icon with a phone and a "!" on the screen...it cant boot into recovery. and i dont know why, and now i just want to go back to my stock recovery but i cant cause i dont know how. ive tried terminal commands... and i tried to learn adb and fastboot but am very lost. basically i want a nandroid of my rooted stock ROM... any help would be much appreciated
The reason is because you need to turn s=off for any of those to work.

Read the guides.
1. The phone with the red triangle icon is from the stock Recovery program. Stock recovery does nothing except show you that screen, unless a special file is found on the SD card, used for a complete system restore. Your flash of ClockworkMod Recovery was unsuccessful.
2. When you do go get past the S=Off phase, and are ready to once again attempt to install CWM Recovery, be sure you install the CORRECT version. CWMR 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread (Android 2.3) based ROMs only! Don't install 3.0.0.5 expecting it to function properly for the Stock ROM, for Iced Glacier, or any other Froyo (Android 2.2) based ROMs. Those all require CWMR 2.x. A higher version number does not mean better. For example, if you are planning to install CM7, back up with CWMR 2.x, then flash CWMR 3.x before installing CM7.
(There is a special, unique to MT4G version of CWMR that handles both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, called "3.0.0.6". You can find threads on it in the Development subforum.)

brick Nexus S

Hello. i am new to the android family
i have a nexus s GT-9020T
i have rooted my phone but without setting the clockworkmod reovery.
today i was playing with the rom manager and downloaded one of the rom from the list. after installation i was unable to start the phone only seeing the google logo with the unlock logo.
i went back into the recovery by typing flash recovery recovery.img etc.
run a restore and restart the phone but still not work
my nexus s is 2.3.4 by the way.
please assist
What "restore" did you run?
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
And download the full rom:
Model: i9020T
Full Rom: GRJ22, KD1
That'll revert your Nexus S to the latest completely stock 2.3.4
Then you can flash recovery again and go back to clockwork mod and go flash another rom or whatever.
Remember when you're flashing a new rom you need to wipe data and cache and dalvik cache.
i run an restore from the backup that i made before installing the new rom using clockwork mod recovery, its part of the option when installing the rom using the rom manager * click box - backup * etc something like that

Next time don't use Rom Manager to make backups or flash roms. It's stupid and can get you issues like you're having.
Anyways, try wiping data and cache then restoring the backup, do it in Clockwork Recovery.
Let it boot, first boot always takes a while, 5-10 minutes. If you see the boot animation freeze, stop and restart, then yeah it's screwed up, otherwise, just let it is.
If still not working from your backup, do what I said in previous reply, just restore to stock 2.3.4 then re flash clockwork mod and start over with the rom you want to flash.
thank your nxt. i have found the real problem. it was not my backup problem or the rom that u provided. it was the version of my clockwork mod recovery. i was using an 2.x.x.x to restore the phone which is why it doesn't work. everything work fine now after i flashed with an 3.x.x.x and restore the phone. one question thou, where can i always find the newest clockwork mod recovery release ? thank you very much

Or just use ROM Manager to get the latest.
That's the only thing I use ROM Manager for... getting the latest Recovery.
thanks again nxt. if you don't mind really ...i have one more question. i know the phone intend to uninstall clockwork mod recovery once its restarted. i know there is command type into the cmd to avoid the phone uninstall the clockworkmod reovery and make it permanent in another word. I didn't run those command when i root my phone because i don't know if its good to make it permanent like.... hmmm like if there will be a 2.3.5 coming next month..just saying ok... with a permanent unofficial recovery will cause a problem?

Are you running custom ROM? If you are, it's already made to not revert back to stock recovery. If you leave it stock recovery you'll get notifications for firmware updates by Google, but remember that applying those to a rooted phone might screw things up too.

thanks again nxt. no i am not running an custom rom. i mean not yet. i planed to try one from the rom manager download section then my phone couldn't start after installation and now i have restored my phone from my backup using the clockwork mod recovery 3.x.x.x.

No recovery, No bootloader and can't SBF

Never mind this can be removed if necessary!
7/26
Well I need help again, so I figured I might as well use this post rather than creating clutter...
So my original help request involved my inability to get my phone into bootloader OR recovery but I eventually got it... I was trying to SBF back to Froyo so I can re-root and flash MIUI.
So I got all that done, but I seem to be having issues getting Clockwork recovery to stick around. After I recovered back to Froyo via SBF, I was able to download ROM manager and flash CWM recovery and then bootstrap it, reboot to it and flash MIUI. After MIUI boots up (runs great by the way, for those considering it), I installed ROM manager again but it said that I had no recovery (or stock) so I re-flashed CWM, bootstrapped it again and rebooted into recovery, only to find myself in the STOCK recovery...??? So without doing a THING in stock recovery, I hit reboot and now my phone is stuck at the Motorola logo and I am unable to reach CWM recovery to re-flash or anything. I cannot find another way to get back into my phone without an SBF back to Froyo, thus back to step 1.
Can anyone help me out?
Oh and I've already wiped data/cache with stock recovery - still no dice
See above post
I asked a similar question. It's a good thing I decided to wait until I got an answer before using ROM Manager. I am not sure why it did what it did.
I would also like to know the answer to your question.
edit: Perhaps (after you SBFed again) if you flashed CWM from Rom Manager but don't bootstrap? It seems like bootstrapping erases the ROM Manager's CWM and doesn't install the one it has. Just a thought. (If bootstrapping is important, though, then disregard this.)
Another thought. Bootstrap first, then flash CWM from ROM Manager. See if that works. Also try going to CWM through the bootstrapper, if you can't do it manually.
edit2: Just tried it that way (D2B first, RM second). worked like a charm. Was able to successfully update Miui.
Man, I don't get why these phones do some of the things they do...
I just SBF'd my phone again, re-rooted and re-installed MIUI and NOW, for some strange reason, I am able to make my way into CMW recovery.
Veeerrryy interesting
