New Desire Z User. Can't use connectify wifi?? - G2 and Desire Z General

So i just got the phone today. In my home I don't have a router, but my laptop is connected, so i usually use my laptop to open wireless via connectify for other wireless devices in the house.
my old sony ericsson mobile phone uses the wifi fine, so does my NDS and gf's iphone4. however my desirez does not even see the wifi network at all.
i did some googling and it seems android phones do not recognize adhoc networks?? is there some simple steps anyone can help me with now?
i have yet to root my phone, and i really dont want to buy a whole new router just for it. thanks.

For connecting your android to ad-hoc network you need to
root and patch ,but there are other ways too ,you can setup
a virtual router if you are using linux there are lots of tutorials around
that you can follow .if you are using windows 7 you can use connectify me.
you mentioned you are using connectiry did you mean
"connectify me" for windows 7 ?? because if you are using that
your phone should see the network and connect to it with no
problem, because connectify me is NOT an ad-hoc network
it act as a virtual router and thats the hole point to it.

i am using connectify on windows 7, and all my other devices see the connection except my desire Z. Connectify says the mode is Ad-Hoc, WEP.
So, I was wondering if that's why my new phone can't see it?
it's funny because a month ago my brother bought HTC Mozart (win7phone) and he couldnt use my connectify and i thought win7 sucks. well i guess it's HTC that sucks.. since my old sonyericsson and iphone can both catch the signal...
would be really great if there is easy way for me to use it..
right now i basically have to use the USB to let the phone use the internet, since i have no phone plans yet.

Ok this is the problem .you are running connectify in ad-hoc mode and
android doesnt support that .you need to switch the mode to access point instead of ad-hoc and then it will work without any problem.
setup connectify again and choose access point instead of ad-hoc.

oh crap i just checked, seems like my laptop doesnt have a win7 compatible device that allows me to share through access point..
sigh.. all i can do is ad-hoc sharing. are there any other ways?

Buy a cheap router?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.

root your phone and patch it is the easiest method. You'll get other benefits from rooting, and it's quite easy now. there are walkthroughs in the development subforum.

If connectify is sharing your network as adhoc mode, is because your wifi card is not fully supported.
You can get a compatible one for few bucks.
Altenatively google a bit for ad hock enabled mods, but I havent tried that mods on DZ.

so i take my laptop to an electronic shop asking for a win7 compatible wifi card?
how much do they usually cost?
i guess this would be easier than rooting my phone n going through the modifications or buying a new router.

Just look on the connectify site for the compatible chipset list, then you can look @ebay or other online resellers to buy one.
Usually they cost less than 20/25$ but is frequent to find one for something like 5$, maybe used.

fix
replace wpa_supplicant file with this one in /system/bin/

make sure u have a root access. also don't forget to make a backup of your original file.

[Q] Tether instead of wifi???

Just wondering if there is a way to tether to a computer with a wired connection to get Internet connection that way, instead of using wifi??? There is lots of apps and stuff that need to connect to the internet to download, but I dont have the wifi's at home.
And if not, is it a hardware limitation, or software???
Handset in question is an Acer Liquid E
I've seen others ask this question & not get an answer that they wanted.
I'm not sure if its hardware, software or just lack of developer interest to create an app to do it.
The simple fact of the matter is that you can pick up a cheap router for $20 that'll solve the issue for you. It's not the solution you want, but it might be the only one available to you.
Heres another thread, it might have suggestions (or updates) that will be useful for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554852
you are right that is definately not the answer that Im looking for, as i have a good wireless router, but i live with a Internet Nazi that doesn't want to have wireless in the household.
But thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out : )

The best I can recommend is having a wireless card in your laptop and creating a ad-hoc network, but if I am not mistaken, the ad-hoc network is not supported on a android device.
You could always do a quick search for some software on the internet that support it, but good luck with that.
You could always convince the internet nazi to use mac address filtering on the router to ensure that only the devices you use are allowed to connect.
Don't know anything about your phone, but both WM and Android phones gladly hooks up to a comp using USB-wire (which is faster than any wireless).
WM6.5 have a program icon called Internet sharing something.
while Android got a pay/trial app called Easy Tether that for the same job.
Be aware that some provider do not allow hooking-up a computer on some cellphone plans, call your provider and ask them.
Using both a X10 Mini(Android) and a M1i Aspen(WM6.5) connected by wire both for file transfer peer2peer and Internet access.
Also there are Bluetooth and a possibility to remove the memory card from the phone and copy files to it in a card reader on a computer.
PDAnet
The only thing I can think of is an app called PDANet on the market, you do need internet to download it on your computer, but if it's a laptop, just take it to a wifi hotspot, like Starbucks or something and download the computer app, then tether all you want
PDAnet
No need to go to a wifi hotspot with the laptop to get the computer drivers for pdanet. You can do it right from the phone, it will download to your sdcard then all you do is mount the sdcard to the comp via usb and open the .exe file, load the drivers and start tethering. Only thing with PDAnet is you cant access secure websites with the free version. But it is an AWESOME app non the less.

Do you want to use your phone's internet for your pc? Then yes- it's possible with apps. (called tethering. search for wifi tether or usb tether in market or on xda...)
if you want to use your pc's connection - then probably not.

no i mean i donot have a wifi modem and i have adsl net modem and also with respect to battry problem in hd2 i prefer to use net with prob connection but many of builds did not have the internet pass through option
for this aim i like to know that is it posible to add this option to that kind of build as a for example apk software
I have the same issue, having the Internet Pass-Through function (which uses PC's connection on the phone) of Desire HD builds on the Desire builld would be great.
yap
its easy you can use your pc's wifi and turn it into a access point
and then using it trough the wifi
can't be easier than this
see,you left out the most important part: problem is that not all of the pc's have wifi!!!
There is also USB tethering, although you'll have to check if there's any builds with it working.
I don't bother with it as I use wifi tethering instead.
The program Connectify is working pretty good, to use my netbooks LAN connection as access point. Always use it abroad when in hotels without wifi and only wired internet. Works only with windows7 though.

I really feel the need to help the OP here. I don't have an answer to his question, but I do understand what he's asking for, and other people seem to be answering different things!!!
He want's to use a USB cable (not wifi) to allow his phone to use his PC's internet connection.
Tethering is irrelevant (that's using the phone's internet connection on the PC) and he does not have a wireless router so cannot use wifi on his phone.
In response to the OP, the only thing I've ever seen as a conclusive answer is that this cannot be done (there is no software that currently does it). That was an answer on a website from about 7 months ago though, and I am aware of the option on the Desire HD, so there is obviously a way to do it now.
I hope you find what you're looking for

IN the revolution HD 2.2 mdeejay NAND version - you have this option built in in this rom !!!
i used it - its working.
USB tethering is part of the Froyo OS. The problems you may have are that it does not work correctly with a lot of builds. Most of the HTC builds tend to work though.
Hmmm.... I also have the same problem.
I don't want to use the 3G Data connection for internet because it's expensive so it would be really useful to get internet through usb from a computer.
So far I only saw this option on M-Deejay's Revolution HD rom and for me it was kind of a heavy build. Worked kinda slow so I flashed a different rom which doesn't have the usb internet pass through.
I also tried Connectify. My phone connected to the computer's wireless but the internet didn't work. I tried disabling my firewall, opening ports, and other things but it just doesn't work. I think it has to do with the software not supporting all WiFi cards.
So now I'm having trouble getting on the internet with my phone to download apps. I have to go outside and look for some WiFi networks to do it and that kinda sucks
I think it finally works! I installed the latest Connectify beta version from here:
http://connectify.blogspot.com/2010/11/connectify-211-beta-up-for-testing.html
And it kinda works now! I think it's just a bit slow.

Connecting My Phone To The Internet via Computer

Hello,
I am using an X10i. I've been wondering, are there any ways i can connect my phone to the internet using my computer's modem?
I am not trying to connect my computer to the internet by using my phone as a modem. Do not teach me how to do it. My question and that question are two different questions.
Thanks.
If u have a mac u can use its wirless as a hotspot if u connect it with internet cable. I do that for my phone. Hope this helps
Cheers
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
yeah ,turn your pc into a wifi hotspot..use softwares like virtual wifi router for windows 7
Note:it will work only if u use a cable to connect ur pc and have a jobless wifi in your pc..
you can also connect using bluetooth,i tried once but failed ,didnt tried much,it wasnt worth that much effort!!
pls dont be naive... not every wifi card supports wifi hotspot even with special applications and tools, and the native windows 7 could make only ad-hoc whis is not supported by android 2.1 or 2.2 as I know...I've read many forums and finaly bought wifi router and what I can say its that its really worth to have it...
yeah wifi card also imp..but most modern laptops and PC are quipped with such wifi cards
I can always use my Vaio for wifi hotspots with my X10..never faced any problems!!
It's not possible through USB. It possible with the stock function of win7 or software for your pc. (Only if you got wireless wifi card in it ofcourse)

I'm using Windows 7 native wifi sharing right now, it broadcasts as a regular wifi network with WPA-2. I use it for phones, consoles, etc

Because it will eat batter, no far distance supported and your internet will be ssssssssssssssssssssuper slow.
^^^This is true. At 2.1Mb/sec of throughput, the Bluetooth will be the slow cog in that wheel of connection.

AGAIN!!! Not every wifi card support it!!! I ve tried ale possibilities (ad hoc, bridge) without succeed...with ipod touch 2G, samsungs i8510, i8910 everything worked, so the problem is only with X10 and android!!! You could make wifi hotspot only with newer or supported cars (my NTB is 3 years old and has unsupported intel wifi card) so this is the deal...

I wasn't arguing that all cards support it, I was just saying that when it IS compatible with your card, it isn't adhoc.
Try using Connectify on your computer. It is free. If it manages to create the hotspot on your wireless card, your mobile will be able to use the new hotspot connection created. It has worked for at least 3 of my friends and it enables me to share connections on my laptop no matter where I am.

[Q] Can i make my laptop an AP for Ideos X5?

I have a wireless router. its a Zyxel P-661HW-D1. My laptop can connect to it...my PSP can connect to it...my girlfriends IPOD Touch 4 connects to it....but my Ideos X5 will not!!..after days of endless searching the internet it seems that it might be an incompatibility issue. But no one knows for sure. Therefore i decided to try and turn my Laptop into an Access Point to see if my Ideos X5 would connect to that instead. And i can`t figure out how to do that either.....some say android phones cannot work with ad-hoc...but i dont know what that means.
Basically what i wanna know is...is there any way i can get my x5 to connect via zyxel router or laptop?
Or do i need to buy another router?...ive got none others avaliable to do a compatibility test =x

Yea thanks for the google search...but believe me ive sifted through every tutorial that there possibly is...as well as all the youtube tutorials. It seems easy enough, but to get a smartphone to connect to your laptop AP seems to be another story. But if anyone has successfully managed to get a smartphone to run off a laptop AP , id love to hear what steps you took.
Though as we will see..i dont think anyone will be able to say that they have. Hence proof of the problematic situation i find myself in ^^
Thanks anyway ^^

i don't remember which of the guides i had followed but the previous summer i created a wifi-hotspot with a netbook (with 3g) and at least 3-5 devices where connected simultaneously (other laptops , smartphones) and one of them was mine nokia 5800xm....
so yeah they work and that they are smartphones i think that it doesn't matter...
if it didn't work it might need an extra adjustment that it missed you...
keep trying!

Android will not show Ad-Hoc networks. See Here:
http://szym.net/2010/12/adhoc-wifi-in-android/
Kernel needs to be patched to allow Ad-Hoc connections.

Yes you can. Easily. Google "Connectify"
Connectify only works for windows 7 =x ....ive only got XP =o ....oh well ill have to stick to single player games for now ^^. Thanks.
Try Virtual Router Manager but I think that what you want just works in windows 7 because it needs a service that exists only on win7/win2008.
For about 60usd you should be able to get a tp-link 1043 which is one of the best routers to buy if you do not care for gigabit-wan and for 5Ghz (I suppose you do not care).
I know, you still need to have the money for that, I am just providing an alternative solution for your problem.

[Q] Use phone 3g on tablet?

Is there a way to plug our phones into tablets and use the 3g service from our phones to our tablets.... Sorta like a modem for on the go.. Instead of using wifi tethering? Not sure if it's been done or not thought it would be a good idea tho
Do a quick search, it has been discussed extensively in other threads. You can use PdaNet Tablet if your phone support bluetooh.
No. Simple answer.
The 500 does not have this capability, Because it doesn;t have the radio to accommodate it.
Physical limitation
so my best bet for Internet on the go is tethering from my phone?
If you want to connect your tablet to a phone you will need to root your tablet.
The tablet doesn't support Ad-hoc connectivity out of the box. Many wi-fi hotspot features on phones use Ad-hoc to connect.
I also remember a while back I was trying to see if I could connect my stock Tablet to the personal hotspot of somebody's iPhone 3gs (connects via bluetooth) but it didn't work. I remember rooting the tablet and installing Thor's ROM and found out that now I could connect to the personal hotspot. Not sure what was in Thor's ROM to make this work though.
And as another poster said, you can try pdanet if you have an android phone. I tried it before I had an Android phone and it wouldn't work (even though the phone still had pdanet on it), and have not tried it since because my phone has wifi-hotspot.

Depends on your phone really. Android is easy enough rooted + wifi tether for root. Non-smartphone takes a little work, but isn't that bad. Check tut on getting usb to 'dumbphone' modem working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452800
