Agreed, I'm not due for an upgrade till August, but it would be nice to have options. I wonder if the uncertain future of WiMax has anything to do with Sprints reluctance to showcase more high end devices?

i was wondering the same thing... time will tell i guess.
They are saving all their money to advertise Evo 2 in June..typical sprint move...
I doubt they will release anything decent before then in fear of it hurting their Evo2 sales (sometimes it makes me feel sprint sells phones and not contracts :/ )
If I had to guess, they are probably going to announce all of their phones at CTIA in march. That is where they announced the EVO isn't it? They are probably doing it there because no one else does it there and they want all of the attention on them. Either that or Sprint is WAY behind in the smartphone business.

While I am not siding with them - they really aren't the same devices. If they were we could easily port vibrant and captivate roms. There is clearly work that has to go into each variant of the SGS line. It would probably make the LEAST amount of sense for the Epic to not get 2.3 officially. Primarily because of its 4g Radio and Front Cam - features that the others lack- even though our device is probably the most complicated to get working right.

In my opinion this is a conflicting report with what that one leak tweeter/w/e he was said. Samsung didn't say no, they basically said "Um, well, uh maybe?" so it has, at least in mind, just as little credibility as some guy saying we were getting it. Just have to wait and see.

Yes, yes, for profit. We all get that they're in the business of selling phones, not giving free updates. That's why I read an interesting blog about paying for OS updates a little while back. I'd gladly pay a few bucks to get honeycomb or ice cream on a 6 month to year old phone and to have them out in a timely fashion. Then Samsung and all the other manufacturers would have an incentive to actually put out updates for phones as well.

this is the general section. and the nexus & evo3d or any future phone that will dethrone the evo is worthy to talk about here. it's upgrade time for most of us and probably most of the devs including toast. nothing wrong with having a discussion.
Knowing Sprint, we will probably get a keyboard variation of that phone. Epic 2 or Epic __, maybe a new name entirely. EPIC 3D would be funny lol (1st Qwerty 3D phone )
It does seem impressive, Samsung seems to be cleaing up thier updating track record too. The only excuse I have of not buying it is the weaker XDA backing. Not to say there will be none but I prefer HTC + XDA.

The interesting part is the rumor that Eldar Murtazin spread this week in regards to the Apple-Samsung lawsuit, about a Samsung Galaxy S3 upgrade that is coming late fall, with 4.5" edge-to-edge Super AMOLED Plus display of high resolution, and no hardware keys. These same features Apple is said planning to introduce in the iPhone 6, which will appear many months after the SGS 3, which must have annoyed Cupertino to no end.

Essentially, Samsung developed features for the Galaxy S3 that Stevie boy wanted to release in the iPhone 6, so Apple is trying to slow/stop Samsung in court, so Apple can be the first one to release those features.
I'm sure Sprint will get a variant of this, its the successor to the Epic 4G. I just hope that this time it doesn't have a hardware keyboard. I think this phone would be the best choice for the next Nexus phone.

There's also a difference from Eclair to Froyo from Froyo to Gingerbread.
Froyo actually offered something new from Eclair, Gingerbread does have some benefits but mostly nothing groundbreaking. The X and the Evo were updated to Froyo in about the same time frame of their release.
Didn't the Droid X2 already launch though?
Guess it makes sense, if that is true, that they'd start pushing the update. Isn't that the idea with the Evo? Wait for the successor to drop, then update the past device?
Either way, it'll be here soon enough.

I agree. I don't think HTC makes better phones btw, motorola kills them in battery life, and I prefer phones made of metal.
I also would rather believe that people in general would want the newest phone over the newest software update. The "average consumer" probably has no idea what the latest iteration of Android is or how to even check for the ota for it lol.
Is it really that big of a deal? The majority of us have rooted phones running custom ROMs anyway. There are handfuls of GB ROMs, both Sense and AOSP. We've had GB on AOSP ROMs (CM) for months now, while the Droid X didn't get GB ROMs until recently.
I know sometimes it's just to ***** and complain about something for the sake of *****ing and complaining, but seriously, is there any need to say that HTC isn't the "leader of the cell phone game" anymore just because of one simple software update?
Also,

HTC doesn't make their phone perfect either, isn't that why your on the Evo LTE right now? All brands of phones have their flaws. Look at how nice the samsung screen resolutions are. Say what you will, but HTC phones don't drop signal like sammys (requiring a battery pull)... You should get a Sammy, you would fit right in with that crowd... And also, I had many moments, a few intercepts and I have family members with epic touch, sg3, nexus s 4g and the g nexus... All of them have serious complaints, the main one being loss of signal and the airplane mode bug... Imagine this... You are on a road trip with your kids, you get in an accident, you go to call 911 because someone needs medical attention, you realize that your phone has no signal and the battery needs to be pulled. While you are pulling the battery, the person who needs medical attention could die in the 2 plus minutes it takes for an unrooted phone to boot... All phones have their flaws, keyboard phones even more so... Like I said, upgrade to a crapsung, you will love the pure crap for a product that you were sold... Sorry, but if you ask anyone that's owned a Sammy and an HTC, almost all of them will say that HTC makes much more reliable phones... And stop talking about me being a sense guy... I run ALL the Roms that are released, sense or aosp, doesn't matter to me...

Normally I would argue, but, it sounds like you are thinking about getting a Sammy, which means you won't be around the shift forums anymore... Samsung makes the best phones ever, I highly recommend them...
