OK - So i've just back from having a play with a Galaxy S unit in a Vodaphone shop. My impression is that the hardware is brilliant and its got features no other android phone has but, man, the interface is UGLY.
It's like a poor man's iphone. It's unimpressive and the Icons / UI looks unfinished. The HTC sense looks and feel much much better. I was not impressed with the Camera app also. There was a very noticeable delay before the picture taken was shown on screen.
Those of you with this phone. Do you get find its better when you adjust to the way it looks and feels or it it possible to turn off most of touchWiz and just use stock android ?
Thanks
Not sure it's possible to turn off Touchwiz without some kind of hacking, I could be wrong though, but I personally think It looks good but I can see how parts of it do look like a "poor man's iPhone".
This phone is almost as expensive as a 3GS so I don't see how the "poor man's" iPhone plays, but besides that touchwiz really only is a launcher. I put Launcher Pro over it and its more responsive and looks better. And it does have some nice touches.
Got to admit tough: TouchWiz 3.0<<HTC Sense

I just use a launcher like LauncherPro or ADW. That gets rid of the iphone copy menu.
One of our members, udK, posted this video of him running HTC's Sense UI on Froyo. He is running the test build, and so far it looks great!
IT IS OUT! For desire only right now, but the devs are about to start porting, currently confirmed 2 Devs are porting.
UPDATE: Desire ROM 2.2 is fully working I assume, as the devs working on it say it might be out by tonight. Hopefully the Nexus will get a full port by tomorrow... No promises from either parties though.
Another update: Not coming until tomorrow evening.
Things HTC added:
720p Recording
Torch
Application Sharing App
Plurk
Hotspot
Apps2SD
More Widgets
Seems smoother than before. It gets 39MFLOPS
and More
Any chance for a leak so Modaco or King can get it running on our Nexus'?

link please?
was hoping HTC would update the overall look of it to sexify it a bit more like they did between 1.5 and 2.1 Sense UIs
I think they did a tiny bit, The title bars seem flat now, compared to 2.1's rounded look. Looks sleeker.
Still wouldn't mind it, it gets 39MFLOPS, meaning JIT is there!

anywho, i love sense ui and i would love to have this on my nexus one. it just seems like these nexus one roms dont have enough space memory for apps so id hope we have the option for Apps2SD
Well if the Desire can do 720p recording without any hacks, I suspect the Google folks will have to get on and sort out the N1's camera, else they're giving the Desire a large advantage over the N1.

What I really like and is essential is the better quality apps for Exchange support, Email/Calendar etc..are so much better from the Desire Rom, the features/options are much richer than the stock Rom. Simple things like move an item from you inbox to a subfolder in exchange doesn't exist on the stock Android.
It's the only reason I run Desire Rom on the N1 personally.
If it weren't for the Desire Rom, I likely would have sold the N1 shortly after purchase and went back to the iPhone. Sad I know. Still can't play GSM wav files from my Avaya modular messaging server though the Android without the RemoveWave app...Froyo didn't fix that either.
That stuff is 101 WinMo, iPhone, Blackberry device support...Android/Google can't seem to get one simple thing working like this in their Rom.
well i wonder when we will be able to have this on our N1 ... hopefully soon enough
I got to play with an Incredible today. I liked Sense UI. It was slick. Quite a bit of work went into it and it felt smooth and polished. Quite nice. My N1 is better now that I have ADW.launcher, but I'd love to try out Sense UI on here for a while.
Hopefully CM6 will have a nice interface and all, I think I might finally unlock my N1 to get CM6. Hopefully I can get something like Sense UI on there as well.

CM doesn't change the interface at all but you can apply themes and morphs to it to change the overall look.
I've used sense UI so much but I just can't get into it over vanilla android. It's very existence is in a way making any sense UI phone a closed source device dependent on HTC to update. A whole second layer of someone interfering. Give me standard android!

Hi Guys
Spent some time on Maemo with my Nokia N900 I got last February. I dropped the thing, it broke apart, and for the time being I had/have to "come back" to my old but beloved HTC Magic. I spent the last couple days trying to find some decent ROM, but geez, lots and lots has happened in the last 9 months and I don't quite like it all that well...
Ok, I present my demands with my hopes high up that someone has the answer to my probs:
I find Sense unusable, it's a memory hog, huge, laggy, eats up all the devices power. So a Non-Sense-ROM.
I don't like the black-green-HTC-look. Stock looks, more than sufficient.
I *do* like HTC's dialer ("Smart Dialer" see pics below) which came with the original 1.5 ROM though.
Speaking of 1.5, I *do* like some of the features in 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 and so on. So newer would be cool, but not an absolute must.
And, speaking of newer: I quite liked the apps-drawer in the older days. I guess the old-school app-drawer as pictured in the other pic below could be added later, right? ADW and LauncherPro and such are cool, but I really really really rather like it simple but faaaaast...
I put my eyes on AmonRA's Donut-ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538645) which is pretty stock. I used it 'bout a year ago. Cool stuff, but I have to admit, it *is* quite aged and it's missing the HTC Dialer (see pics below). If there's no better possibilities, any way to get the dialer in and keep the ROM as clean and lean as it is?
CyanogenMods are cool as well. But, when I left, CyanogenMods were still accepted as they were No Google Apps sueing ASOP stuff reflash apps and such. I tried to get the hang of it, but coming back after 9 months isn't quite that easy. So if a CM-ROM would be my answer, you guy's would have to help me out a little on how to get a "full" ROM. Of course, including the damn dialer
So quick recap: Does anyone know of a stock-as-possible ROM which has or could be equipped with the screenshotted original HTC Dialer pictured below which is fast as hell because it's not crapped with the Sense stuff...?
Thanks in advance. Hope any of you guys can help me out...!
Post scriptum edit I: Found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811960 but of course it's missing the dialer. Seriously, seems alot of my headaches could be solved if I just knew how to get the damn dialer... :-/
CM 6.1 solves almost all of your issues.

I know you said non-sense ROM. But honestly, no offense but I think your preconception of Sense UI is based on the older laggy builds from HTC, speaking for myself having used almost every ROM on this forums for my Magic, the Sense ROMs cooked by the devs here are fine. Just as fast as vanilla ROMs like CM.
Now if you said you don't like the looks of Sense then I would understand given thats a personal preference.
I notice there are a few different ROM's for the DHD, some with Sense some without.
Whats the actual difference, does Sence in some way slow the phone down?
I use the clock, friends feed, messages, mail, agenda and the music widgets.
However the one thing that I really dont like is the slide down thing that sense brings, I much prefer the press/slide left/right that you get with the plain Android builds.
So, are there advantages to running a more vanilla android version with some widgets over the sense style ROMs.
I am on mike1986's Android Revolution.
I myself believe sense itself make things sense. For instance the iPhone-like copy&paste.
But yeah you're right it's huge and clumsy. But that's why desire hd has such big ram. I feel sick for not getting full advantage of my device.

If you root the phone using VISIONary+ you can delete/rename the Lockscreen.apk I believe and it will return to the vanilla lockscreen. As for jazzy widgets that's a Sense thing, unless you buy and install LauncherPro over ADW.Launcher, LauncherPro has People, Bookmarks, Calaendar, Messaging, Twitter, Facebook & Friends widgets that can be used. There is also music widget control using Cyanogen.
I find sense slow and garish, it slows down the phone for no good reason, ASOP ROMs are much lighter and look, IMO, much prettier and unique.

I got rid of my Sense just recently, I prefer the phone this way, Sense just took too much space, try other Launchers out, if you prefer it, I suggest you try out the Cyanogen ROM, which I have done. A whole lot better.
i dont get it, people who have cyanogen seem to think its LOADS better, but its not though is it, iv used it on the hero and now running it on dhd.
its ok, just more theming options and alot uglier imo, dont like contacts, or phone or music or many of the default apps
thats where sense is LOADS better, its alot easier and nicer to use, has better features
saying this im on cyanogen and really cnt be assed to change back otherwise i would, and i wanna try ginger out when its out
apart from that sense blow cyanogen out the water

People like the simplicity of Cyanogen. Sense slows even the DHD down, it's aweful. And to boot pretty much everyone with an Android phone has it. It's better to be unique.
you think sense slows dhd down? yeh it makes it sooooo laggy, i get no slow downs using sense and never had not even on hero
people just go with what most say, to make themselves feel "unique", its mainly down to the rom dev if it has lag or not, although it ironic you say your unique for using cyanogen just like allll the others

Scroll down to the bottom of your app drawer and look at the lag as it reaches the bottom, and open your SMS's and scroll, notice the lag. Sense isn't well coded. And of all the people on XDA how many do I know personally? None. How many of my collegues and friends have Android phones? Lots, how many have Cyanogen? None. That makes it unique.

Point well made.
I really can't notice nay slow down due to Sense whatsoever. I really do think that someone should clearly "sell" the advantages of dumping Sense, other than just plain old enthusiasm for hacking something. I think it is more down to aesthetics than anything else. Try other ROMs and see if you like them, you might. I like the fact that HTC have at least tried to add value to Android.
A further irony is having come from the Magic I can vouch for the fact that much effort was put into porting Sense to that plain Android phone.
Sorry, no lag when I scroll my SMS or App drawer. The DHD can definitely deal with the demands of Sense.
Sense is pretty cool and only lags if you try to make it. I think that if all Android phones came with Cyanogen as the stock ROM then the Sense ROM would be a massive hit. Cyanogen is definitely a good choice because it's clean and fast but until i actually need my Desire HD to run faster and more efficiently i won't use it. That's why i will go sort of halfway and flash a cooked sense based ROM like Leedroid.

Lol, LauncherPro isn't the default launcher, so on a Sense based ROM it will be faster, I am simply pointing out that stock Sense, totally stock launcher and all, lags.
We could argue until the cows come home which is better, but I prefer the alternative that is Cyanogen. At least then I can have a totally black and white theme which is what I like. And it's only recently I have switched to ASOP previously I used a Sense based ROM on my Desire, but craved the ASOP lockscreens and dialer.
If we move to another ROM apart from sense, does this mean that we will be losing some features like "louder ring in the bag, flip over the phone for quite" etc... ?
Does Cyanogen ROM provide these all?

Not that, I know of. Sense Copy & Paste is one of them, there is no magnification window when you copy and paste on the DHD, and the louder ring, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

works real nice i have cyan set up alight atm but hopefuly not long till the ginger comes along
I am back on a sense rom. Rcmixhd since adfree and other components work correctly unlike on the other sense roms I've tried. I used to love Cyanogen on my Nexus One but the new sense is very slick indeed.
It does not lag. It does take a little longer to boot and use more memory but who cares when we have so much ram on the dhd. I don't know how the amount of room it takes can be an issue either considering we have 1.5gb rom. I still have 0.9gb free with 54 apps installed.
tbh I still love cyanogenmod but its htc locations which is keeping me on sense. Its the best android offline navigator I've tried in terms of routing here in New zealand and I love the fact I can just buy a cheap 1 month subscription for navigation in another country when I go overseas. Any other app one is forced to buy a complete package for that country at considerably larger cost.

I really don't like the Sense launcher, I use adw, but sense has lots of little modifications that are just nice to have. Text selection, quick lookup, freaking awesome dialer, flip to speaker etc
I'm running android revolution hd, no lags, excellent battery (whole day with pretty heavy use. Needs charging every night but I can use all the phones features as much as I like and not give the battery a second thought) also 2400 in quadrant. So all in all i really rate sense.
Hey all - looking for some flashers' opinions on MIUI. What do you think? Do you like it? It looks really slick and very functional, but I feel kind of lame flashing something onto my Android that looks so much like iOS lol, like I'm trying to be a poser But to those of you who run it or have tried it, what did you like and what did you not like?
I would maybe be running Launcher Plus Pro over it, so I'm also curious to hear what people think of the whole system, not just the home screen...?
Its a wierd looking rom. Kind of hard to navigate, is not user friendly in my opinion. The UI is too complicated and not so easy to use. I also didn't like that it doesn't have an app drawer.
I also got alot of fc's with that rom. I don't know. Just alot of lil things I didn't like.
MIUI is great! even though it does resemble iOS. It's smooth and responsive and I haven't had any force closes. What I noticed is I don't have to download an alternate launcher, sms app, browser, etc. I guess some bad things are no app drawer but I just organize all the apps into folders. Also there are a lot of settings you can mess with and the UI takes some getting used to but I think thats the fun of flashing new ROMs, something new to play with. Try out thederekjay's ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060415 I'm pretty sure you'll like it too! And make sure you read everything before trying it out. =p
this rom looks very nice im give it a try when i can and let ya guys know what up thx
I know some people really like it, but my PERSONAL OPINION is, if I wanted iOs, i would get an iPhone.
I have tried it twice because after my first try it felt like a gimick and too iphonish but I liked the icons. After the second useage I missed the drawer and I also got a lot of fcs. What I did to satify my Miui taste was download the MIUI launcher. Its made exactly like ADW and looks like MIUI with a drawer and you could add icons.
Thank you all for your opinions! I'm on the go right now and can't flash it, but will when I have some time to play around with it and test it out. Like I said, I'll likely be throwing LPP over it to use as my home launcher, so I'm curious about how it runs system-wide, not just the aesthetics of the launcher...good battery? Good data connection and speeds? I'll likely be trying the demonspeed MIUI rom by derek...I know the settings menu and just about everything is different from AOSP/Sense, so I'm curious to try something new...
I have flashed both Evil D's and thederekjay's MIUI roms and I love them both! tdj's demonSPEED rom is blazing fast and never had any real problems with it(the problems I did have were fixed very quickly ). it does resemble iOS, but more customizable. yes the menu options are confusing at times, but after a while you get used to it and know where everything is. I also have used both ADW EX and LauncherPro with no issues with both roms. battery life is awesome, I got 26hrs on a full charge. some advice: make a nandroid backup and just flash one of the MIUI roms, preferably demonSPEED, to get a feel for it. cant hurt to try it out its a very fun rom. plus netflix works
Lets not forget the Cool Things you can do in it. The New Version 1.5.20 has the MIUI Camera and this Camera is Really Good. It Auto Focuses and is very fast when taking pics. Plus when you get a MMS you have the option to save the pic and also crop or rotate it how you like. Then lets not forget about the Flashlight while pressing home on lockscreen. Comes in handy if you need it for a minute. And the Dialer has an option to record calls, if you might need to after authorization from the other person first. Those are the main things that i like about it but overall its really great. Oh and the Gallery is light and loads really fast. Especially if you have a lot of pics like me.

not to mention the pull down is really neat and if u long press the icons it takes u directly to that option(thats one of my favs) also much like Sense, it has the abilty to flip to silence and quiet ring on pickup.. Eh maybe does resemble iOS in someways(and boy do i hate apple)... but imho it takes the functionality from different manufactures/developers and mashes them into one... the dialer is second to none, with t9 capabilities, to the little details in tells u(for example missed calls, the number of rings before they hung up, that's just neat) the sms/mms is beyond that of any stock rom... searching for contacts is a breeze... i honestly have never used a rom that is so functional right out of the box without the assistance of 3rd party apps... battery life is great and the way it utilizes the ram is beyond awesome..the launcher may be really iphoneish but it looks amazing with how the icons r sized and just the graphical dispaly alone is great! not for nothing, if the only thing holding u back from MIUI is the iphoneish look, i would suggest downloading it and using it for a week... i was the same way @ first but now i wont look back!

hmmm not sure where u get "plain" from... there is really nothing else like it.. plus between features and how u can customize it... but hey thats ur opinion and we r all entitled to one..
I really like MIUI look, but never could see a point in using it since it looks horrible when I jack my LCD Density to 160 or 140... so kind of defeated the purpose.
If you are using the default 240 density (not sure how anyone can use this phone at all at that density personally), it's actually a pretty slick/clean looking interface IMHO.

It sounds like either people like it or hate. I used royalginger for sometime with launcher pro plus. It was fast and smooth but battery was less ideal with launcher pro. Stock launcher was too plain for me. So I tried thederekjay's MIUI rom for kicks and loved it. Takes some getting use to coming from CM7based rom. Tons of customization to modify the look of the phone. Runs very fast and smooth. Great battery life. You should give it a fair look with a test drive to see if you like it.

i wouldnt bother flashing it just because it looks so much like iOS.
So I flashed it earlier tonight, and tried it for about an hour...in the end, my personal opinion was that I wasn't crazy about it. It was fun to play around with something totally different than the usual AOSP/Sense roms, but the aesthetics and overall look and feel just wasn't doing it for me. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to the other android os options, but it didn't seem as refined and classy as some of the other roms. To each his own, but for me I'm going to flash to something else.
But to thederekjay, thank you for your hard work on the rom! I could see why some would like it, and the rom itself felt smooth. That's the great thing about having options We can all flash and run what works best for us
