I'm getting a bit miffed with the exec constantly connecting to 3G or GPRS without prompting.
Every time I forget to close Internet Explorer, come off the WIFI at work and come home to find (2 hrs later) it has connected to 3G for all this time and worse still has loaded the f*** o2pda.co.uk page and 50, 000 nasty images.
Can I disable 3G/GPRS completely? And toggle it manually when I do need it? Which is hardly ever given the cost ...
Gubbs
Uhm sorry to answer my own question but ..
If you go to Start > System > GPRS Settings and change it from PAP to CHAP it can't connect anymore.
Handy to turn off the bloody expensive self-dialling when idle internet access.
BTW: Does anyone else find this extremely annoying or is it just me?
I think o2 are going to get told to f*** themselves if I get a whopping data bill this month.
If you don't even include the ability to turn the feature off how can you charge for it?
Its like a credit card that will, in lieu of any genuine spending activity, log on to ebay and buy you a half dozen mint condition copies of Heffner: The Official Biography and some oversized German trench wellies from WW1.
Bloody marvelous that!
Hi all
I have this beloved device and after installing duttys rom it becomes so much better. however the people at orange wanna charge me a fortune for data so i told them to stick it.
trouble is i still wanna use email / weather functions. is there any program i can install or setting i can use to get these programs to only connect to my local wireless network instead of constantly trying orange and then coming up with a failure.
i know i could leave the wireless on but this would chew up my battery pretty quickly.
any ideas
cheers all

Hi binarysi,
Are you using Orange in the UK? Reason I ask is that Orange appear to have a LOT of misleading price information on data access at the moment...
I decided that if I wanted get the best out of this device and use google maps, e-mail etc. on the move, then I was going to have to invest in a dataplan. I also didn't want the hassle of being tied to an off peak package.
When I looked up the costs of adding a bundle on my Orange account page, they wanted £8/month for 30MB of data. This sounded quite a lot (and £41.13/month for 80MB!), so I decided to cross check this against their pdf price guide document. Here it said that they wanted £7.50/month for 250MB of data... getting better, but left me a little confused!
I eventually decided that I would contact them as I couldn't get the deal I wanted online. Imagine my surprise when the guy on the other end said that he could set it up for £5/month for 500MB anytime access... Suffice to say I went for this yesterday and after a minor few hiccups getting the service running, I started using this today...
So far, so good - just hope the bill works out right!
£7.50 for 250MB is Orange UK's older pricing.
It's their standard data bundle
This £5 for 500MB deal is new, having come in at the same time that they started offering 500MB/month as an integral part of the Panther 45 packages.
It does seem to depend on who you speak to as to whether you get offered the old bundle or the new one. I've also heard it said that the 500MB bundle is only being offered to new customers but I'm not sure how true that is.
Also, it might be a bit like T-Mobile, in that if you take W'n'W for £7.50/month, it's a bolt-on that can be added and removed as and when you like, whereas if you take it for £5/month, it's as an integral part of the tariff.
So it might be worth checking with them about that as well.
@theOP: if you search for an app called 'nodata', it allows you to disable all cellular data-connections.
But you should be able to do exactly the same thing by going into the comms manager on the phone and disabling the 'data connection' option (though you have to do it via the separate app and not using !SINGH!'s 15 tabs, since it doesn't have all the options that way).
For the record I am an existing customer, although I have recently renewed my contract (hence the Touch HD upgrade).
While I was using my Touch HD on wireless networks I used to disable the Orange data connections by selecting Start->Settings->Connections Tab->Connections->Advanced Tab->Select Networks and then select 'My Work Network' from the automatic connection default. This seemed to work most of the time although I noticed that occasionally it would exchange data via GPRS...
orly? Where can i download it? xD
thier is a piece of software which allows your phone to auto connect to wireless signals connected in range. the software will also break through any protection system which may be in place

Yeah sorry, my bad. I didn't notice who posted that. I've seen him posting more nonsense about upcoming apps so this was obviously nonsensse too.
Guys,
I am seriously considering purchasing a Galaxy Tab to go with my Galaxy S.
My SGS already has a SIM card and as the Tab primarily won't be used outside of a Wifi area be that Home or Work and am unlikely to use the Tab as a Phone/SMS, I am wondering whether or not to bother purchasing a SIM Card to go with the Tab.
Percentage wise it should be something like 80% Wifi available.
Therefore, could you please let me know how you use your Tab and for those that don't use a SIM Card (be that for Data or Phone/SMS) do you find any restrictions?
Restrictions could be in the form of when the Tab is switched off (screen off only), as there is no SIM for any Data connection how do you find the Tab receives any internet updates.
When my SGS has it's screen switched off wifi is disabled and as such any data is sent through my SIM Card data plan. This keeps the phone updated be that email messages or App updates.
As such with no Data plan on the Tab how do you receive any email/App updates?

Go into Wireless and Networks, WiFi Settings, hit the Menu button, Advanced, WiFi Sleep Policy, and choose Never. There ya go, WiFi stays on when the device is asleep. This should be the default on all Android devices, but it's not.
WiFi uses far less battery than 3G, even if left on while sleeping, and of course it doesn't burn your data plan.

Thanks... Okay, that's got rid of that problem.
Anyone else have any opinions on whether or not to use the Tab with a SIM Card?
I can justify getting the Tab but I can't justify buying another SIM Card.... unless the advantages outweigh the costs.
Get a 10buck data only card and leave it plugged in. If you think you're going away for a bit, pay 10 bucks to re-enable it for that trip and be done!

Don't think they do a Data card for that price in the UK.
You can get a £10 SIM Card from the likes of T-Mobile but it's still £10 every month regardless of whether you use it or not.
Hey I don't have a galaxy tab used to have an alas before it bricked. Anyway there is no need to buy a simcard just Google advisable.apk. Its a mod that allows you to establish an ad-hoc connection to pull internet from a mobile or computers ad hoc connection

Not so.
There are plenty of PAYG deals doing around that allow you to do.
For example -
3.
T-Mobile do a £2 per day deal which is quite good.
My personal favourite would be GiffGaff if there was any kind of O2 signal where I live.
EDIT - actually, my new personal favourite would be TMo 6MONTHWEB for £20, which gives you 1GB a month for 6 months for only £20!
As far as I'm aware, all of these are effectively "pay as you play" options. If you don't need to use the internet from one month to the next, just don't use the SIM, and when you need to ensure you have enough credit to buy an add-on/goody bag whatever.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Beards
FYI, T-mobile US no contract Tab comes with a SIM card unactivated.
Wifi works just fine in this configuration. It also works without SIM card however you get a message Emergency calls only.
Cheers
I have a sim for my tab. $20/month Bell Flex plan is cheap enoigh and I can cancel at any time and just tether with my desire. Wifi at home but HSPA everywhere else. Once the roms start coming out ill unlock amd just use my telus sim with a BT headset for calling. Using the bell sim allows me to text from my GT and I love that option.

I didn't put sim in my Tab at first, but now I got one and a tiny dataplan to go with it, since I mostly use wi-fi and work and home.

Really wifi uses less battery? So is there a way to fully disable 3g and use wifi only , thinking of just using a phone as a access point

Switch to GSM only which will leave the phone operational, or airplane mode with wifi on to completely switch off cellular radio.

Interesting comments.
I was not aware you could obtain a SIM card with Data for such a cheap price.
However, it's nothing really to do with the money, I'm fortunate to be able to afford an additional card without even thinking of any financial consequences. I am though more interested in hearing how you use the Tab and how you get around the problems.
Having said that I know what will happen; I'll get the Tab and then end up purchasing another SIM Card with all the trimmings for something like £15 to £20 a month just for ease of use.
this is wierd i have it set to never sleep wifi but it seems like everytime the screen is off the wifi does sleep, i am using the modified wpa_supplicant to connect to my ad_hoc...

Bell charges $649, but also requires you sign up for at least one months' service (minimum $20, but they bill for that), and there's the $35 service fee (which they may charge on the spot, or they may bill you for, or even waive).
Cancel the data plan as soon as you leave the store, you're still out $55+tax but have a month's service to show for it. Or keep it on for two months and get a $50 credit, which after taxes means you get those two months for free, and THEN cancel.
There are no other options, though you may be able to talk a Best Buy or Futureshop flunkie to sell you one outright with no activation, but that's very hit or miss.
Hi everyone, im running typhoon cm7 v3.0.0 and i was wonderin if there is a hack to make tmobile believe we are using less data than we really are? I hate it once i hit 5gb downloaded data my data connectuion speed slows down drastically and i hate it!!! So if anyone knows a solution plz help.....

i disagree
there are some really effective tricks that can be used to Significantly reduce your data usage on android. i use data a lot on my phone and i never hit 100MB data usage. how in the hell you are able to hit 5GB? anyway try the following tricks:
1. use "Droidwall"to only allow certain importantapps to access the the 3G connection. the less important apps can run or update just fine from WIFI
2. use "adblock" this will block connection to all ad servers
3. only allow opera mini and Operamobile w/Turbo enabled from droidwall to save data. if you want to use another browser (cant really see why) use them when you are on WIFI.
4. avoid push mail if you can. it will kill your battery and may end up eating your data plan to some extent.
5. use "3G watchdog" or something similar and place a widget in the homescreen to constantly remind you of the current data usage.
Well I have not really done any looking for it, but there was suppose to have been a work around of some kind to still be able to get 3G and 4G speeds after you were throttled. But I also heard T-Mobile has already found out about it and fixed whatever glitch was in the system. You can do some digging if you want, bit it might be in vain when or if you find it.
Now don't get me wrong I think if they say unlimited it should mean unlimited, but I am not going to get into all of that as it as been beatin to death. But if you are going over 5Gig every month I want to know what the heck you are doing too cause until almost two weeks ago when I accidently busted my laptop screen. I tethered my HD2 via WiFi like for like 14 to 16 hours a day and only got up to 3.5 gig once. You might seriously want to think about a home internet set up or start using some local WiFi hotspots more. Heck I know a guy that goes to the local Hardee's and sets for 6 to 8 hours a day just to use their WiFi for free. I have set there for 4 hours befor. r,
Thanks for all ur replys........me personally am a huge fan of call of.duty...and i play online most of the time....tethering my phone is excellent thats why i use it......i heard a hack about one of the droid phones on verizon that did this sort of thing so i thought it wud be possible on my hd2.......

5gb on a mobile connection? what the hell are you doing to use that much data?
I know what 3g dongle is not working when insert into A500....
but, i saw a prog named Mobile data when i view all program at settings.
then i click the "Mobile data" and saw that is showing 4.00kb.
I clear the data becomes 0.00kb then i plug my E1750.
in about 2 sec time, the Mobile data is showing 4.00kb again.
it seems like it is actually able to read my E1750.
from another thread, i know after rooted and with "some" setting, it is actually able to connect to 3g network.
Thus, can i conclude that android actually allow us to use 3g dongle
but
acer block it so it can came out with a product called A501 to suck your money?
just wish to know.....
possible anyone can bypass the setting perfectly by not rooting it to get 3g dongle works?
Appreciate for your interest in this post.
