Contacts and Google access - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi -- if I do not use Gmail for my email, will Google grab any Contacts I place on the phone? If so, how can I prevent this?

to do so you have to go in settings, sync option and disable the contacts synchronization. Easy.

I see what you are saying, but would that not disable me from doing a PC to phone sync for a non-Gmail based email account?
I realize that Everything Is Connected is pretty much Android's theme song, but I need the ability to choose the connections.
Do you know what Google is up to in your phone when your eyes are closed?

Keep facebook contacts from showing

I know there must be a setting for this but for the life of me I don't seem to be able to find it. I had to wipe my phone and flash it again today. Now when I go to make a call, it is not just showing my contacts that I sync with my pc but it is also showing my facebook contacts. Keep in mind this is in the phone app and not in the people app. How can I stop this from happening? I am on the fresh 2.1.2 rom.
In the address book, click menu, then view.
Assuming that you have your facebook contacts syncs checked, go to menu, settings, accounts and sync, and uncheck facebook sync. You should be good to go.
Dave I still see my facebook contacts in the phone app how about you OP?

Try removing the facebook account altogether in manage account section (within the account and sync settings). That worked for me.
In the people app I have only the phone contacts selected. Where I see the facebook contacts is if I am in the phone app and I start scrolling through the list from the phone app or if I create a shortcut that is Direct Dial. In those 2 cases it shows the facebook contacts eventhough in the address book the google and facebook contacts are not checked.

What got rid of my facebook contacts is if you are looking at the main screen, you go to menu, then settings, then accounts and sync. If you have facebook at all in that menu, remove it completely. None of my facebook contacts comes up any more if I'm in the people menu or phone menu at all.
That's all I know.

This worked for me also, now what i cant figure out is how to link the contacts in my people app, to facebook. I dont want hundreds of contacts in my phone when i dont give a rats @ss and dont plan on contacting them....
Syncing the contacts also sucks when you text. it list all the fb contacts in there....

Google Calendar

I'm brand new to android, and smart phones in general. How do I access google calendar, other than through the web browser? Like is there a way to access it through the gmail app? I hope my question is clear. Thanks!

Add your Google account under "Accounts & Sync" in the settings menu and check the box for Calendar syncing...
It will then show up in the stock Android calendar on your phone.
I'm new as well. Coming from a Blackberry. Does the my calendar that is on the phone sync with the Google Calendar online? When I am adding entry's it ask where do I want to put them...
Laristech, the calendar on the phone syncs with google. I just tried it. I assume it works the other way around too.

Correct, it Syncs back and forth between computer and phone as the information is stored in the cloud. However, when adding new events on the Phone I always add them to the Google calendar, not to "My Calendar". Which is a pain because it always defaults to My Calendar and I have to change it each time I add an entry.

My gmail wont notify me when a email comes in.

When an email come in, Gmail won't notify me. I checked that gmail notification was on. i don't know whats the problem. Can anybody help?

I also Know nothing about this
Most likely another app interfering. Do you have any SMS notification apps or anything else that affects notification services for something installed?
I don't think so. I think facebook and ads but that about it.
Are you sure gmail is running? Go into manage applications look for gmail and see if the force stop box is greyed out. If it is gmail isn't running
Have you got gmail checked for syncing under Accounts and Settings?
I know that ie ILWT has an option to install a version of Gmail app that should have something different about notifications,it may be your problem, try to search it...

I second this. Did you just turn notifications on in the gmail app? You need to go into android settings, accounts & sync, click on your email address, then make sure gmail is checked.

You may want to search on google for a modified gmail app with something about notification or just check synching as they said...

Use gmail account for everything bar email

Hi folks,
Hopefully will have my nexus 7 soon - am i right in assuming i can activate it using the same gmail address i have on my phone? If so.. i dont really want my emails coming to the 7 as the tablet is probably going to be for family use.. can you just delete the gmail or or remove the email account or something? I suppose I could always just set up a new gmail address and use that.
Thanks,
Michael
Just set it up not to refresh automatically. Easy-peasy
You can tell it not to sync gmail under "accounts and sync" in settings.

Sync, that's what I meant... why did I say refresh?!? But yeah, just turn off the sync and you are set.
Try freezeing or disabling the gmail app from the apps list or root it and uninstall gmail app

[Q] "People" app.

I can't believe I have to ask someone about this, but here goes. Where the heck does the "People" app sync contacts from? I assumed it would be from my gmail contacts, but it's not. I have doubles/triples of some people in there (old phone number, new email addresses, etc). I have no idea where it's actually getting that info from. Does anyone know?

Ah, so from Facebook, etc - that makes sense. Any idea if there is a way to make it sync from google contacts only (ie. the ones I have in gmail)? Thanks.

Of course. Go into settings then go to accounts. Here go through all the accounts and uncheck contact sync.

Actually, if you have your Facebook contacts mixed in there then you need to go into the Facebook app, go to settings, and other "Other Settings" set "Sync Contacts" to "Don't Sync". That will remove your Facebook friends from your cotacts.
