3G drops out while tethered? - Fascinate General

I'm having a problem with wireless tethering (using both Wireless Tether and Barnacle) on my Fascinate. Basically, whenever I tether, my 3G connection will frequently drop after about a minute or so (alternating between showing the Dormant icon, but mostly the 3G icon just vanishing from the status bar completely). It'll randomly come back up, but generally it drops again after 10 seconds - a minute. While tethered, even apps on the phone (Browser & TuneIn) will have loads of trouble connecting, but it seems that getting the Browser to refresh a few times will bring it up often enough to bring up the webpage, but it never seems to last more than a few seconds that way.
The moment I un-tether, 3G works totally fine on my phone, without any issues or dropouts (I pretty much exclusively use 3G on the phone). If I retether again, the data connection will drop out within a minute.
I'm currently running SC2.2 (w/ Voodoo), but the same thing previously happened on DJ05 (Blackhole + Voodoo) and DI01 (SC, Stock), although it didn't seem as bad on the Eclair roms, but being a bit random in nature it's hard to tell.
Anyone got any ideas/suggestions? It'd be nice to have some form of tethering working reliably! Thanks!

Not sure but i'm subscribing cause it happens to me....

I get the same thing especially when using hacked 3g hotspot to tether my ps3, seems to work ok when i tether to my pc. i've created a couple threads regarding this but it seems to go nowhere... i would love to find a solution

This happened to me as well. Seems to be an issue with the Wireless Tether app. I switched to using Barnacle for wireless tethering, haven't had any issues since.

Back when I was on DJ05, it seems that Barnacle actually would drop out MORE on me, which is why I switched to Wireless Tether.
I just tried PdaNet yesterday, and it worked completely fine for me over several hours, with zero disconnections (I was streaming or downloading stuff the entire time... and although at times it got fairly slow, it never completely dropped).
Guess probably should look to see how Barnacle/Wireless Tether connect the Wifi and 3G connections. Should try to stream data between the phone and computer while tethered, to see if that remains working even when the 3G drops. That should give at least a general idea of where to look for the issue.

I'm getting the same thing and I have tried EasyTether and PDANet. Both seem to get really slow and eventually drop. Wasn't sure if it was me or the what.
running SC2.3 right now, thinking of going to 2.4 voodoo and seeing how that works.

As a disclaimer, I don't think I've ever tried tethering after upgrading to EB01. However, on DL09 Super Clean, Barnacle worked perfectly for me, never skipper a beat. As always though, YMMV.

The new version (2.0.7) solves the issue for me. I was using barnacle instead because of this issue. I liked it (aside from the cutesy name and icon) but it started flaking out with the new update, so I tried Wireless Tethering for Root Users again, seeing that it had also been updated, and it works a treat on my Verizon Droid 2.

WiFi Tethering dropping often

On my droid X my wifi tethering drops often using either wifi for root users or verizons app with the NAI changed (aka not paying for it), Anyone else having this problem. laptop just stops working or netflix streaming stops but device appears to still be connected. Never really used the wifi tethering enough with my other devices in the past (dinc, droid 1, etc) but its annoying now that i have a small laptop and try to use it often. PDAnet works perfect via cable, so maybe its the droid x wifi driver thing?

by drop do you mean the cellular data connection or the wifi connection? one possibility (unlikely) is if you are receiving a lot of texts. I know that on my X when i receive a text the data connection stops while receiving a text. By stops i mean the data arrows are inactive every time i receive a text regardless of what i'm doing with my data. however i doubt this would cause your netflix to stop. do you have certain power settings to change the data state when the screen turns off or something?
Mine does the same thing. I can use it usually anywhere from 2 minutes up to 10-15 mins max. It does this using 3G Mobile Hotspot & Wireless Tether (ad-hoc). In fact I was looking around on Google, and saw a bunch of people with the same issue, ones that were even paying for the tethering option. Mine is so bad that I don't even bother with it anymore.
I'm using the PDAnet USB connection right now, and it's working without issue. I also have great results with Bluetooth DUN, but it 'feels' slightly slower when compared to the USB connection. (which could all be in my mind)
I've had it happen on the stock OTA 2.2, Rubix Blurry .3, and now Rubix Blurry 1.0. I had it happen overclocked @ 1.2, LV 1Ghz, underclocked LV @ .9 and am currently back at stock speed and voltage.
im assuming its moto's hardware then shame with fission i was actually starting to like the phone alot
Before my internet was connected at my home I used my phone as a hot spot and it worked flawlessly. I never had a connection issue except when I would receive phone calls.
yep. mine stops ALOT. ill get lucky and stay connected for a few minutes here and there but it will disconnect non the less. PDA is ok but still.
3g hotspot and wifi tether for root useres works great for me. Both only drop when I receive a call such sucks if you are in the middle of modern warfare match.

Mine is terrible. 2-5 minutes max connection time. I had to switch to usb as well.

Mine did this too,but all my smart phones have. Not just motos. A few wks ago I started using barnacle on my dx and havent had much of of a problem since. Maybe once an hr I have to stop and start tether again. It was acting up yesterday but I figured out battery manager app will kill the connection. Lemme know if it works or it's just a coincidence.

N1 wifi Issues solved with Gingerbread

I have always had an issue with the wifi on my N1 when trying to connect to my router at home. Getting a connection use to be hit or miss, I would often try connecting over and over again with no success. Even when I did connect it would drop out as soon as the phone when into standby.
Well to my surprised after downloading/installing GB I went to attempt to get on wifi and it connected right away. I was shocked to say the least. I turned it off and tried it again and it connected again. Then I put the phone in stand by and it still stayed connected. Then I had to run to the store and left wifi on, when I got back to my apartment it connected again, no issues. This is completely awesome!
Froyo 2.2.1 fixed my major wifi issue (wifi going dead while the phone was asleep), but not the smaller issue where my connections would randomly disable themselves occasionally. I haven't seen that happen since Gingerbread though, so that's a good sign so far.
My only remaining issue with wifi is that the DNS cache still doesn't get flushed when switching to/from wifi to/from 3G/EDGE. This causes me frustration with our Exchange server which has a different IP on our LAN than it does on the public internet...
Congrats. I used to have problems, but I got a new router and it has been fine since. I used to get the "disabled" once in a while, but then I started using Auto Wifi Toggle, and never had another problem.
I know how you feel, it's nice when things work.
I've found these wifi connection issues to be Mostly Harmless

Really?! How come the same issue wasn't solved for me until gingerbread?
Now wifi is working just perfect Connects fast, sleeps when it should and transfers are awesome and rock solid
I had an issue with my home router and N1 where the N1 would connect, but after a bit of idle time, lose connection. It would re-try connecting only when I turned the screen back on and waited a good 10sec.
I was on 2.2, then 2.2.1, then 2.2.2
Now with 2.3.3 ...... my WIFI stays connected at home and at work... no hiccups at all.

I had exactly the same issue with my N1. Oddly, it got worse when I upgraded to a newer router (New D-Link with -n, compared to a 6yo Netgear with -g only) No idea why, but it did.
I finally got the OTA last night for Gingerbread and only now does it automatically connect and stay connected to WiFi like it should have.
My N1 is plain vanilla - no mods. For the 6+ months I've had the phone, it would constantly lose connection. I'd hit the WiFi button on the Power widget to turn off and on just to force it to reconnect to WiFi. 5 minutes later, I'd check my phone... back on 3G. I knew it was the phone, because I have plenty of other portable WiFi gadgets that stay connected just fine.
Whatever it is, I'm glad they fixed it.

Wireless Tether Help!!!???!!!??? Droid X

Tethering looks to be working on the droid side, but no connection is found on any computer, sometimes with limited connectivity icon.
Anyway i can increase the tethering data output...different channel? certain kernal or rom suggestions would be helpful
If you're connecting to your computer you can use easytether
Experimentation is the best way. If you have the wifi analyser app, scan for a channel that's not being used around you. Ive noticed that on gingerbread (when I can get it to tether) it doesn't run quite as fast, so if you have a gingerbread ROM look at that. It is three g, so signal strength is important, and if you use a lot of data (like above 1.5 gb) verizon starts killing your connection speed. Just play around with it, and don't really expect anything above 1 mbps, unless you have exceptionally good signal in a unpopulated area.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Im am on the rooted .588 GB and have the TBH patch installed and use the Hotspot app to tether. At first I could not get it to connect half the time and the other half when it did connect seemed to suffer DNS related issues or drop connection.
I ended up adding my MAC address in the native app for authorized connections and have had ZERO issues ever since.

[Q] Has anyone successfuly gotten their A500 to work with Barnacle?

(Yes, I've searched...)
I see several people "working" in Ad-hoc mode. But none of them actually directly reference Barnacle. I've been messing with theis for over a week, and can't seem to get this figured out, or if it's a lost cause, and I need to get a new phone.
I've got a Sony X10 Mini Pro- infrastructure mode is still a ways off, and I'm running the new Taboonay 3.2 on the Acer. I have Ad-Hoc, I can connect, if I manually specify an IP- DHCP never connects.
There is no surfage, though. I can't even ping the IP of my phone. I show connected, get the up and down arrows, like it's connected, but no throughput.
Has anyone actually gotten this to work? Do you think it's a barnacle problem, or is it something I can tweak in the Acer?
I have the same question. I havent been able to get this to work.
Barnacle worked for me in the past.they did a update then no more worked. I switched to wifi tether.and I think its better.I even donated money to the other.
Sent them several emails with not one single reply.kinda sad but its life.
works for me from myn my samsung intercept.
Question can you connect to your phone using another devive like a laptop?
Does your acer even see the barnacle in the wifi settings?
If not make sure the adhoc patch is installed it think when i went to taboonay i also had to reinstall the patch.
Yes, Barnacle does work with a lappy, and yes, the tab does see the barnacle ad-hoc, it even connects- if given a static IP. Just not able to negotiate a network connection- no ping, destination host unreachable.
Try wifi tether.I had the same issue .wifi tether is faster as well and free also.
My phone is x10 mini running on cyanogenmod 7 2.0.7.
i am using barnacle tether on it and it becomes a ad-hoc hotspot. THe problem is my iconia a500 has issues working with the connection. I can see the hotspot (i have changed the wpa supplicant file to that of xoom available) so i get a *before the name but as soon as i enter the password of wep and click on connect button,it shows connecting and then obtaining ip address and that never stops. on clicking on that it shows that the signal is poor and decibel = -1. What the ****!
Please, can anyone help me out here?

erica_renee,
I am so glad that you posted this. Even happier that I remembered it. Today around 4:30pm my dsl died. Called in and it is something that effects my little area. And of course they are working on it. Funny how the phone still works, but anyway... This was especially annoying because a friend gave to me a HTC Aria with a cracked screen. I'd just repaired it, started rooting it and installing CM7. The timing was typical.
I was using Barnacle to tether my pc, a tablet and another phone. What's worse I am in an AT&T Edge only area. So it was PAINFUL at best. I finally remembered your suggestion, that you mentioned a speed improvement, and also that I had installed WiFiTether after I read that.
Well I ain't gonna lie and say that I was able to browse on one device while I netflix'd on another while downloading on the other... But I can easily be getting something from the market on one of the devices and still manage to browse on my pc. Which is a terrific improvement to what Barnacle was doing for me.
Barnacle was like dial up on a bad day. WiFiTether is easily twice as fast as the old dial up ever was. Maybe more.
So you really saved me from going nuts. Thanks so much! And I'll go ahead and say thanks for my Brother in town. If that hadn't worked I would have been camped out on his lawn modding a phone...

Painful Tether/Hotspot speed

Ive been trying to use tethering to my laptop and its to the point of unusable, im getting 56k speedsi if that while a speed test from my phone im getting 15-30 down and 2-10 up.
I'm using wifi hotspot ive tried both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. I have also tried the USB Tether but my windows 10 doesnt like it for some reason. Im on verizon with a shared Data plan that includes the Hotspot feature. anyone have any ideas
Thanks
No idea, but I've tethered to a Windows 7 laptop. Performance was good, so I never bothered to check the speed.

I am having same issue. I use T-mobile and my OnePlusOne never had this issue. I would go to gym and just turn on my hotspot and watch Netflix without issue in the past. With the MXPE, it's like being on 56k modem. Anyone else having this issue?
I tether almost everyday due to terrible speeds at work. I'm on Verizon unlimited and I do not experience any speed issues. I unlocked but I made no changes for tether as that worked out of the box
I tried Bluetooth tethering which works fine without any issue so it's not exactly a carrier issue. I also verify with t-mobile that they didn't turn of my hotspot feature by accident.
I have the same issue on TMO US. With my Nexus 5, I had fast, dependable tethering. Now with the MXPE my tethering is painfully slow and flaky. Not good at all when on the road.
I'm having the same issue. I just upgraded from a Droid MAXX that had fantastic tethering speeds, and now on my new MXPE it's like being on dialup. Has anyone come up with a solution? I've been loving the phone so far, but tethering is too important to me and I won't be able to keep the phone if I can't figure it out.
I've had this happen twice. A reboot fixed it both times.
I've had this happen more than twice... Hoping the devs can come up with a fix

I'm on VZW ULDP and mine can be painfully slow at times as others have indicated. Usually a reboot will rectify it. But that's not really convenient. I have it set up to start tether automatically when I start my car (bluetooth connection activated via tasker) so I can automatically get traffic to work or home on my z ultra.

I had my first tethering session yesterday. I am on Verizon. A customer I was meeting with needed email access on his Surface Pro and there was no free WiFi where we met. I went in and setup a portable WiFi hotspot. We were both quite impressed with the speed. Keep in mind, this is the only time I have tried it but there were no issues.
hello i just got my moto x pure and i was trying to tether everything seems to be ok until i try use internet in my macbook and is not trasmitting data, same thing happened with nexus 6 i found that when lte it stops transfering data, this is so stupid this is an unlocked phone and it wont let me tether?????? wtf........im using simple mobile unlimited 4g LTE ,i was using an Asus ZenFone 2 and tether without issues, thanks.
This happens almost every time I use the hotspot. Rebooting usually fixes it - temporarily. I'm really hoping that marshmallow has better hotspot performance on the MXP
I get this issue... It's not exactly slow speeds, more like a spotty connection. I use Remote Desktop to do my work, which should still technically run smoothly (albeit slowly) on a 56k connection. I am connecting to a Windows NT server, so I am only using 16-bit graphics quality to reduce the strain on my bandwidth. We didn't even have anything that much faster than T1 at that time, so I can't imagine a Windows NT server running slowly on a modem connection. I noticed a couple things that were strange, so I think there may be settings on my phone causing it but I cannot be sure.
The connection fast when I test the tethering at home, but when I am out the connection constantly drops. I cannot even get a stable connection to my server to do any work. This is not when I am in the car moving from cell tower to cell tower, this is if I am at a place without WiFi, such as my dentist's office.
Chrome gets stuck at "Resolving host..." when trying to visit any websites. This would lead me to believe it is a DNS error, however this does not explain the connection instability with Remote Desktop, and using the address's IP address does not seem to fix this, strangely enough.
I am on a VZW grandfathered unlimited plan, using the TruPure ROM. I did not want to move away from stock, but I did it in an attempt to fix my tethering issues. So far nothing has worked.
