Hey guys, first post and honestly I was trying to avoid this post. Anyways here is my problem. Active Sync will not work. I get the Unrecognized USB Device Error. I have tried every suggestion I can find. Uninstalling Active sync and reinstalling, soft reseting, switching USB ports, trying USB 2.0 port, trying on every USB port (6), using cradle, not using cradle, cold booting my PC, booting PC, and I have uninstalled the unknown USB device, powered off my Mogul and restarted. My IT (yes he is an actual IT guy) guy at work even got to working on it after I explained the problem to him. He even went through BIOS on my work PC to try and figure it out to no avail.
Has anyone had a problem like this....and if it is on my phone I guess I would need to reinstall a rom using my flash card. I would prefer this to be the last option as I am not too savvy at loading ROM's (have not felt the need to load one yet). I also am running nueLED , so I'm wondering if that may be interferring. I tried uninstalling it but it wouldn't uninstall. One more thing, active sync was working perfectly for a week, then it just stopped working.
You need to install drivers on your PC...
Usually they come on a CD with the phone, but you can do a search on google and find some.
Also try your carrier's website
I've tried installing the drivers from the CD, but that doesn't work. I'll try googling again but when I searched last week I could find nothing.
OK I found some drivers...but when I choose to install them from the device manager it says "the specified location does not recognize your device".
Alright looks like I just will not get Active Sync or my PC to recognize my device. How does anyone have some tips on installing a ROM on a storage card.
ive had that problem before. i suggest trying it on another computer or just formatting the one you currently use.

To solve the problem:
Go to Settings.
click Tab [Connections]
USB to PC <---
un check the Enable advanced network functionality
Then re connect your USB cable and it should sync with your pc.
Unfortunately that was one of the first things I did. It still does not work. Evidently someone else on this forum is having the same problem.
Maybe this will work cuz it did 4 me
First do a hardreset. When everything is done on your phone, do what Taninpv told you and then do a softreset. Then let your phone stay sit for an hour. Dont play wit it. Then go run active sync on your phone and wait 5min. After that, connect your phone to your computer and let it stay there for an hour or untill u see something running. When you see something saying like RNDS is beeing install let it install and dont touch your phone. After a while activesync should pick up your phone and follow the directions and it should work from there. Also, everytime u aregoing to disconnect your phone from the computer, close active sync on your phone first, dont disconnect your phone when activesync is running on your phone or it will have problems again trying to connect. I have tried this 3 times already. I was not connecting to activesync untill I got this. I tried everything people told me like downloading actesync of microsoft, uninstalling it, connecting to another usb port and nothing. This is the only way it works 4 me. Good luck. If it doesnt work, PM me and ill help u.
Thanks Erick I am trying now...
as of the past few weeks i have been getting the same issue, very strange. When i 1st got the phone i was able to use the USB cable no proplem sync transfered my files good 2 go. Since i modded my phone with silly skins i-phone screensaver, HTC homeplugin and the phone doesnt want to be recognized via USB PC connection, i dont wanna reset my phone again to Factory stock and reinstall it up again.
yo
try what I posted yesterday.....Did it work 4 u burgertime???I hope it did. Oh yeah, my cousin also had a problem but his proble was that the wired mini usb on the mogul(under the storge card) one of the gold plugs in there was bent and he just fixed that and it worked. The wired thing that it would charge.
Yea I tried it over the weekend and it did not work. Looking at my mini USB port I can see that one of the gold prongs does look like it is bent....I have no clue how to bend it back though.
Wow it was just the USB prong....incredible. Now I'm the laughing stock of the office. Thanks for the tip Erik!

Worked like a charm! Long live the search function
So seems i have run into this problem now. Doesnt sync with my XP or vista computer. Tried unchecking the usb connection advanced functionality option. just tries to install (XP does but says it wont work, vista was just usless). At one point the vista actually connected but as a guest. The prongs are all good too, nothing looks bent. Ill try another cord maybe. eh what a pain. ill try a hard reset tomorrow
Ive tried all these and no joy. Can someone tell me how many gold conector "wires" there should be? Maybe one is missing?
mine are like this > l lll < Should there be five with one in that space?
Thanks in advance...
Seriously...
I have the following problem with my HTC Touch HD. Since yesterday after i transfered 2 video files and a few pictures, when i connect it through USB, the computer doesn''t detect HTC anymore (nor syncing nor file transfer). Even the Bluetooth syncing does not work. I performed several soft and hard resets, and it seems it;s getting worse after every reset.
I bought the phone 2 weeks ago, after i sold my Apple iPhone 3G 8GB. As we speak, i kind of regret i did that...any advise for me ?
I forgot to mention: when i plug the uSB cable, the device goes recharging.
Have you tried booting your pc ?
Also try unchecking Settings/connections/Usb to Pc/ "enable faster data synchronization"
r
Andrew
What cable do you use? I had similar problems with non original (asus) usb cable.
greetings everybody..
1) i tried what you said several times, no result.
2) i get same results with the original and the other cables..
3) i noticed one thing . . . if i connect the device to a computer that i never conected before the device, it launches active sync....and Active Sync just wont interact with my device.
Did you try reinstalling ActiveSync on your PC?
yes i tried....same result. Do you think a change of ROM would solve that ?
Now, even a syncronisation using bluetooth is almost impossible, since i cant pair the computer and the device. Damn, it's like a virus or something.
stupid thought:

Impossible since i cannot connect using USB. Sorry !
I too had problems with my PC not recognizing the HD. Found out that it was a problem with my firewall and anti-virus. I adjusted anti-virus settings to allow active sync to pass through and have had no problems after that.
HTC also recommends going to Start --> Settings --> Connection tab --> USB to PC and deselect the checkbox for "Enable faster data sync"
For device recharging when plugged in to USB : go to Start --> Settings --> System tab --> Power. here below the battery charge indicator, there is a checkbox. Read the message and check/uncheck as desired.
Hope this helps !!
i thought one potential source for my problem would be the antivirus, but i disabled firewall (eset at work and symantec end point protection at home) and no result what so ever.
I cand figure a way to sync the device even with the bluetooth since i cannot pair the device and the computer.
I am starting to regret i bought HTC...
Try click the Activesync icon on HD Program, there is a "Option" on the menu, click and see if you could delete all the old connect. If yes, re-establish the connection again to see.....good luck
Option menu item is disabled (i performed several hard resets)...(
Another thing i noticed. I unchecked the box (when connected to USB charge), so now when i plug the usb cable, it wont charge. But, if the device is in stand by (black screen), and i plug the usb cable, it wakes the device up. So, in my mind, i think it is something wrong with the OS, it still "feels" the USB cable, but cannot (for an unknown reason) take the necesary action.
For 4 hrs i try to sync the device with the computer using bluetooth, and i cannot manage to do so.
Is there any way to reinstall ActiveSync on my HTC device ?

Tonight i will try to install at home Windows VIsta (at work and at home right now i have XP). I cannot use my phone - no phone number in agenda and it's driving me mad. The phone rings and there are quite a few persons i dont want to talk with.. HEEEEEELP
nobody there to help me ?
If you did a hard reset, and you can connect in drive mode, but can not sync, then I am 99.9% sure that there is nothing wrong with your phone, but that your computer is messed up.
Uninstall all your antiviruses, firewalls, and other bloatware, and see if it works then.
Just a possible solution, but did you try plugging in your phone into other USB slots on your PC? Are you perhaps trying to sync it through an USB extension cord, or maybe USB hub? I had problems with my PC recognizing the THD if I tried syncing that way. Best results were plugging it directly into the back side of the casing.
The reason I'm asking this is that if you have too many USB devices plugged in, it's possible that the USB voltage drops too low and devices won't connect to the computer.
I tried on 5 different computers, all available USB ports.
On a new computer, sometimes on the device screen it shows up Active Sync but that is all, no sync occurs. If i try again on that computer, i get the same result as i get using the computer at home or work.
The device cannot conect as a Disk Drive
Is there a way to reinstall Active Sync on HTC ? My guess is that this software is all gone with the wind (even i performed a hard reset). The big question is what the hell happened ? Could be a ROM fault ? I mention i never tried to change ROM, the only software i installed was S2U2 and Core Player.
If by monday it wont work, then i'll send it into service (i have warranty). But i hate service
all out of ideas...
Any ideas ?
Which items are checked when you go to Settings/connections/Usb to Pc/ on youre phone?
Have you tried to use another memory card (because youre problems started with copying)?
this is my problem,
when i connect my hd2 it charges but the computer doesn't recognize it. on the phone settings it is set to active sync. i also have 2 computers; xp and vista, both do the same thing.
i could careless about active sync, i just want to plug my phone into my pc and transfer files in and out. ive also tried the disk drive option but still no go?
if i enter bootloader and plug it in it recognizes the usb setting but when the phone is normal, it doesn't??
it did this with the stock rom and its also doing this with nrg titanium rom.
any help would be appreciated
Same thing here.
It charges through USB but it doesnt connect.
If i choose the storage option it works fine.
I want to sync my outlook and i cant...
What the heck...?
i know this may seem a bit "it helpdesk-ish" but try re-booting your PC
Come on... give something drastic!
Already done that, rebooted the pc and the hd2...
still nothing

believe it or not i have done that mannyy times and did alot of device manager things to try and let both computers recognize the hd2 but still nothing haha..
ive had previous hd2's and they've all connected fine untill this one, maybe its this specific one thats giving me trouble. but regardless, it charges via usb then it should be able to recognize it
Check the active sync settings to ensure that usb connections are enabled. You can tell be looking at the system tray icon - there's a read circle with a white X in it if USB is disabled.
Saying that though, if it doesn't even recognise it when the device is in USB mode, I'd try a different cable. It's perfectly reasonable that the cable could power the device but not fully facilitate a USB connection.

That is very weird. Sorry mate - never heard of it doing that for anyone before.
Make sure you have the mobility center/active sync program installed on your computer. Without it it won't work.
On Vista or Seven, with the HD2 plugged in, you can find the program/drivers by launching and refreshing manually Windows Update. On XP you have to do that manually.
Good luck.
This happens to me often. In my case I have found it to be a weird driver issue. Go to device manager and look for the yellow triangle. Right click and update driver software. This worked for me I hope it helps.
bit late but just flashed maxsence and i love the look, but have allready had to restart by phone 10 times in 10 minutes. I'll wait for the next release. back to GTX for now.
Good work NRG. keep it up.
this is one of the many WM6.5 errors!
need Android soon!
Ok here we go.
The phone did not connect through activesync to my pc. When i selected to connect as mass storage it connected.
I checked for driver issues in device manager but nothing came up.
I checked the hd2's activesync. Bingo! the activesync was crashing when i was running it. I had to hard reset the phone.
Now it works fine.
My guess is that maybe a program that i installed recently was buggy and created this particular problem. Unfortunately i have about 50+ programs installed (including themes etc) and i m not sure which one it was.
I was installing all the programs again today one by one and after the install process was completed i connected the hd2 to usb to find which app was the problematic one.
After installing almost(some were found useless) all of the apps (here is the crazy part) the hd2 still was connecting through activesync....
HTC will drive me nuts...
Anyway the phone now connects correctly.
I cant understand which was the problem....
as odd as it may sound i think i figured it out.
i think its the usb cable that im using, i have to wiggle it around for it to connect to active sync but once it connects its not a stable connection as it cuts in and out.
but charging capabilities work though!
pos wire, i ordered a new wire and if that one fails also, i will have to get my hd2 replaced for faulty usb port
thanks for all the replies much appreciated
@k20a1
Try to hard reset the phone.
It worked for me.
If not again, then use your warranty!

"Disk drive" mode not working with XP laptop
HD2 is working fine with my desktop, but wit laptop I can only use ActiveSync to browse files.
When I connect the USB cable I get:
"Found new hardware wizard"
but it tells me that it Cannot Install This Harware - Disk Drive
"An error occurred during the installation of the devie The system cannot find the file specified"
And I only have "Finish" to click - if I click it the wizard lunces again immediately and goes on and on with no end.
HD"/Leo does not appare in Disk Manager (I know ablut the drive lettering issue)
I'm sure its my XP issue, but I havent found drivers to fix that, and I'm not about to reinstall XP on my lappy in near future.

I share the same here and I was despaired of trying to solve it with any logical, as well with illogical, measures. Such as: rebooting, changing usb cables, reinstalling activesync 4.5, etc.....etc...blla..blla...blla...
However, I solved the "Transfer files issue" by taking out the sd card from the HD2 and connect it with an external cards reader to my pc.
The card reader connected and works with the same usb cable that does not work with the HD2.
That way I load it with all files and in the same occasion I reload into my computer the daily spb backup files.
However, I have the feeling that the reason for that problem is a missing file/driver named: "Setup1.SPL" in the pc windows operating system.
In order to solve that it seems that only reinstalling windows on my pc will be the solution which defiantly do not like.
Something happened with my HD2. USB charging functionality works, but connectivity - not.
Computer shows message "USB device not recognized"
Tried on different comps, XP, Windows 7 - nothing. Soft reset, pulling battery, changing options on USB in Settings didn't help.
Any ideas?

Have you tried a different usb cable?! Anyone you know have a HD2 you can test it out on?! If something doesnt work on my HD2 I try it on my girls just to double check?! When you plug it in do you get a the option of choosing active sync or hard drive?!
Another thing it could be, and I need an answer to this myself, is that when you first plug the phone into the PC, the device presents the option of ActiveSync or Data Transfer, with an option of "Do not show this again". If someone selects Data Transfer, and clicks Do Not Show Again, how can this be reversed or undone? I have a user that cannot Explore through ActiveSync because he likely selected this option.

Jimbo, you can re-enable that in settings-connections-USB to PC, there a checkbox there labeled "ask me first about USB connection..."
DocAlex, did it connect properly in the past? If so, I'd start with toreone's suggestion and find a way to test with a different cable and/or PC.

Yes, installed. Also tried different cables, one of them was it's OEM cable.
Manipulated with USB setting on phone - didn't help.
Checked wet indicator - it's white.
Did nothing with - on some morning, after full night charging, connected to USB and got it. Bluetooth sync works on same computer...
Looks like USB controller died
Did you try connecting to a different computer?
Thanks Phunkeefunk!
Finally, after and hour on tech support call, T-Mobile agreed to replace it. Already got new, used SPB Backup, very easy transferred all from old one to new. USB obviously works on new.
So - some time USB controller can die ...
So I can't get my desktop OR laptop running XP Pro 32 to even recognize the phone. As in no audio plays and nothing appears in the system tray. Tried with/without debugging mode, installed the samsung drivers etc. The phone doesn't even show up in device manager at all- not even as something unrecognizable. Its as if the port is dead. The phone does 'ding' though and charge ok so it is receiving power... though nothing at all appears in the android notification tab when connected. Any ideas or anyone know of any apps on the pc or android side to take a closer look at whats happening on the bus?
The only way that I can get it to work is to put it in media mode. It shows up as a media device in Win7. If I put it on, "ask every time" or whatever it doesn't work and in mass storage mode it shows up as two unreadable drives, they are grayed out in Explorer... Basically...don't use the "ask every time" for USB function.
This function seems like such a simple thing, not sure why Samsung has so many issues with it considering they have been making media devices for a long time.
Anyway... do you have access to a newer OS to at least rule that out as a cause. Not saying it shouldn't work with XP 32 but just something to check out.
I was having similar issues at first. I take it adb doesn't work either? Well my fix was to delete my whole Android SDK folder, then I redownloaded it (though I just kept the "tools" folder this time). Then I downloaded "USBDeview" (google it) to delete every USB driver that had to do with android (basically just left the printers, HID, and my Sansa drivers), restarted, then I downloaded the samsung drivers from the thread on here, plugged my phone in and manually pointed the driver search to the drivers.
ADB and Mass Storage has been working fine since. All I can tell you is to keep checking cause there's something you're missing, I also thought to myself "what the heck else can I do?" since I had done each one of those steps previously, but maybe I just had to do them all together. Good luck.
another possible solution is to change cables if you're not using the samsung provided cable - some cables are charger only (no data) - some of the motorola cables are charger only and we've already had one poster that had that issue
I couldn't get it to work at first either. I more or less did this.
I plugged in my phone. I did not enable mass storage mode on my phone. Walked away and let my PC think for a while. I came back and I noticed I had two new drives. I then enabled mass storage mode and could connect.
Two of my machines I had to do this. I'm not sure why it wasn't instant, but it just took a bit of patience and walking away from the machine to let it think for a while before I guess it installed the drivers and made its peace with the fact it wasn't the G1 any more.
Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". That works if port on PC is OK.
If it's a driver issue, open device manager and uninstall the usb ports. Unplug everything from usb and when you reboot the computer it will automatically reinstall the usb ports.
Sent from my Vibrant
I ran into the same issue. It was a problem with the USB cable I was using. As soon as I tried a different cable it worked fine.

I second this, I forgot my sammy cable at work on Friday and on way home stopped at T-Mo and picked up a charger w/cable and realized right away this was just a charging cable as soon as I connected it to my PC. I'm returning the cable back to T-Mo tonight. At least I was able to charge my phone over the weekend.
UPDATE: You guys are right, it is the goddamn cables! I bought an extra wall charger + cable at the t-mobile store and was using that at home. I had left the original in-box cable at work. Tried the cable at work today and now the drives pop up. Still don't appear writeable but I can look into that when I have time, probably the typical driver issue. As far as I can tell those separate cables are power only! $15 for a two wires + dc adapter. Thanks Samsung. Grr.
i suspect the mfgrs have gone to charge only cables to help keep folks from tethering - just a suspicion
if the "drives" are popping up, have you "mounted" the phone (pull down notification bar, clik on USB connected and it should give you a window asking to mount the cards or drive)
FYI....The Rocketfish cables you get from Best Buy do not work. They are only capable of charging.
@larryccf...I don't think certain manufacturers are implementing this on purpose so we can't tether. I think their just being cheap.
Where I got my cables on the cheap! and my problem.
I got my cable at monoprice.com. Check it out that is a 10 foot usb cable for $1.69 and it works for me. They have different lengths and even some colors. Now my Mass Storage issue . . .
My Mass Storage via USB works fine unless I enable "USB Debugging" which one of my apps needs to work. Once debugging is enabled I loss the ability to see my sd card and internal storage on my XP netbook. any ideas????
Same Problem
I have the exact issue, tried many things have'nt found a fix yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,

Yes phone is mounted, and can be seen w/o usb debugging enabled. However with usb/debugging on it does not read the phone being connected. Meaning that I cannot connect to ADB which is my main concern.

Ain't that the truth!
If you are running windows (x86 or x64), it would be wise to install the samsung drivers. I was having this exact problem, but as soon as I installed the drivers from samsung, viola!
I had the latest drivers from google, and they did not work for me.
Here is a link to the thread containing the links to the drivers, thanks to TGA_Gunnman:
