Ok so on the release of the new froyo I am tempted to try out the release but I had a few questions I couldn't quite find a good answer to, any help would be appreciated. The other day I did a back up via clockwork and I was wondering what exactly that backup would restore if I were to switch to a different rom or from eclair to froyo, or if it would work at all. I currently am running syndicate rom with the extreme kernal and can't complain but would like froyo. Would my homescreens and all my settings come back if I were to upgrade to the froyo release and run the restore from clockwork. Also if I do the OTA can I do the regular root that I used for my 2.1? and will any of my data on my sd card be erased during this process. Thanks for any help.
I would wait until your rom developer cooks something up. Otherwise, ODIN to DI18 and start over. Do you have a launcher other than Touchwiz? I use Launcher EX and have my desktop and settings saved to the SD card. Simple to get back your desktop
I use the launcher pro paid edition I have done a backup in that program.

Your going to need to re-root if you OTA, but if you wait a few days there will be a froyo update that will already be rooted.
Sent from Bonsai v 5.0.3
Yeah I kinda figured that so if I wait for that can I use the cement back up from 2.1 to restore my stuff to the new 2.2 rom?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Maybe. Restoring /data across different build versions will sometimes give weird problems and force closes. You'll just have to try it and see if it give you any problems. If it does, then you'll have to flash back to eb13 and redo all your settings from scratch or use something like titanium or my backup to save some stuff.

Last night, I used Root Explorer to move the Touchwiz Launcher APK to my SD Card as I was fooling around experimenting new ways to get as much of a Vanilla card as possible. As I went back to my home screen, I was not able to do anything because of not having a launcher now. I factory reset my phone via booting into recovery and after rebooting I find countless force closes. I am not really sure how I can fix this. If any one could provide any help it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
If you want the closest thing to vanilla, flash Eugene's Vibrant Hybrid r3.. you cant delete TwLauncher without applying this hack that Eugene released today (or yesterday). Are you able to mount your phone to USB? If you are.. download Hybrid r3 and flash that and it'll fix your problems. Hybrid r3 comes with TwLauncher uninstalled
grab the Vibrant system dump around here
Grab the touchwiz stuff out of the dump and move it to your phone and reboot it

Nope, I can't mount it
Your biggest chance of success is most likely to use odin to flash stock. Its not that complicated to do. Just search around xda. The most important thing to do is to have the Samsung drivers installed

So i have probably flashed my phone around twenty times, and each time something goes wrong or doesnt work, i have to use Odin and flash back to stock, do the JI6 update, install OCLF, root it, flash clockwork recovery, then try and flash another rom.
My concern is that it takes forever to do his process everytime. Is there an easier way to do this? Do you need to have JI6 before flashing a 2. 2 rom? Do you need root to install a custom rom? Or can you just copy over clockworm recovery to sd? Any info will help, thanks.

I've flashed my phone with every rom I could find. I was using ClockworkMod Recovery to do my flashing and never had a problem. but if you flash a 2.2 rom.... you can't go back to 2.1
Unless you open Odin and have your phone set to Download mode.
Use these files and click START
PIT- s1_odin_20100512.pit
PDA- T959-PDA
PHONE- T959UVJFD
Then your phone will be rolled back to 2.1 update1 STOCK.
I had to use this 4 times. It works.

Who's the stupid person who told you to flash JI6 first to go to 2.2?

yeah ...
I have no clue how you could be having this much trouble... are you following the guides?
First off you don't need to wait for the ji6 / flash the ji6 update to get to froyo. 2nd, why are you bothering with the lag fix before getting on the rom you want to run daily? Try to keep your flashes clean. By this I mean once you're odin'd back to stock, just flash 2.2, so there's no weird mods messing things up for you. If you're finding things wrong every time you have to eliminate as many variables as you can that could potentially cause something to go wrong. If you flash straight from stock, you're only variables will be within the 2.2 ROM you're flashing. Hope this helps. It's definitely worth it to get on one of the froyo roms in these forums, I recommend Axura, no problems at all and there's an even newer release than I'm running so it might be even better.
I did a backup with 2.1 update1 stock. Then flashed to 2.2 Obsidian V4.
That's my first flash and I only got the phone for two weeks. So apparently
I was still in learning mode. I did not backup my contacts as I thought
I could easily go back to 2.1 just as if having a dual bootable linux box.
However, after restoring to 2.1, the phone did not boot. It appears that I
have to use ODIN to bring it back. But my concern is I will lose my contacts
once 2.1 is back. So my questions are:
1. if I use odin, will I lose my contacts?
2. is there any other way to let the phone boot?
3. Not sure if my case falls into the category that flash to 2.2 then cannot
go back to 2.1 unless odin is used.
Sorry for asking so many questions.
Many thanks in advance.

Ok i'm confused on how you will lose contacts.
When you add contacts to your phone are you choosing "google" as the place to add it? If you choose "phone" then you will lose contacts as data is wiped.
But always choose "google", then all of your contacts will be synced and stored to googles servers. Then once you add your google account after you flash your rom all of your contacts will be synced right back to your phone..... this is what I do and I always have my contacts no matter what
install check list
OCLF (Root only)
Rom Manager (clockwork recovery + Rom Installer)
thats all you need really for quick installs.
I did my first rom install about a week ago, since then i've flashed 4 different ones, havent had any issues. i tend to stick to installs that can be installed via clock work, Used odin 1 time that was because OTA JI6 broke me.
Obsidian V4 is unstable and was pulled from the public download page for revisions try V3 or Onyx R3.1
as for contacts, you don't have them synced Via gmail or atleast backed up on your sim?
Just so everyone knows there is a stock 2.2 for use with ODIN. No need to go back to stock 2.1 then up to 2.2 again. The 2.2 for ODIN is pre-rooted. I have done this twice now with no problems. Haven't needed One Click Root/Unroot since we got 2.2
It might be a little late to know this. But to be honest, I do not really buy into
the concept of putting everything in google's hand. That's why I chose to
save in the phone other than google.
I thought that by backing up the current ROM (2.1 update1 in my case),
I should be able to restore back to it whenever I want to.
Am I doomed? Really hate to shoot everybody an email asking for their
numbers. And worse, some of them don't have email since they are old

so far obsidian v4 has not given me any trouble, but I will give V3 a try later
to make sure I have at least one stable version.
As for contacts, I did not take it too seriously when I flashed to 2.2.
But now I realize it's a lot hassle to get all numbers back if I can remember
who are on my list.
Is there any hope to save my a**?

Thanks for all the replies but to be clear all my custom flashed roms flash successfully. Nothing wrong with flashing, just doing advanced stuff like testing eugenes kernels with other roms. If something goes wrong then i have to start over. I was just wondering if we can go from stock to 2. 2 which i know now we can. Do you need root to do this or can you just copy the update. Zip of the clockwork recovery to sd and get into it from stock recovery to flash the new rom

Ive been using gmail as my contacts backup since 06 when it was beta invite only. Synced via active sync on my windows mobile 5,6 and 6.5 phones with ease its just always made more sense then outlook or sim cards since i could access it anywhere i had internet.
Give it a shot doesnt hurt to always have atleast 1 backup

Ok i just want to be Safe because last time i bricked my phone i was very new to flashing roms and had to wait a whole month before my Droid X came back from the factory (warranty)
iv since then learned about SBFing and such but i dont know about installing a new rom on my Droid X. I know theres a System SBF but if i want to install a completly different rom
For Examle:
Apex > Fission
Fission > GummyJAR
etc..
do i just Flash the System Sbf then factory reset then flash new rom? or can i not do roms yet sinces theres no Full sbf for 2.3.40
Sorry if this is posted again i just dont want to break my phone...Again.
Currently Running Apex 1.3
On 2.3.40 (2.2.1) like i said up there ^^^
With the GingerBread theme
You will want to get your phone up to .340 before flashing any ROMs based on that version. If you haven't gotten the OTA update yet, then you can follow the process I did:
Flash the .320 Full SBF
Flash the .340 System-Only SBF
Factory Reset
Root using z4root
Install Droid X Bootstrapper (I recommend the donate version on the Market because the app is just so damn useful)
Nandroid backup so you can easily go back to "stock + root" without another SBF
Start flashing ROMs using Clockwork Recovery (be sure to follow the steps outlined by each Chef). I recommend DarkSlide 4.1, it's awesomesauce on a phone, available Blurred or Blurless.
If you flash a ROM that you don't like, all you have to do is restore the Nandoid backup, and start over.
What if i didnt make a Nandroid before flashing a rom should i just SBF the System that TBH did then then back up then flash?

You do not have to Nandroid the original config + root. I did it only to speed up the process of changing ROMs since you will occasionally run into issues going from Chef A's ROM to Chef B's.
If you haven't gone too far, I would suggest starting over.
So im on apex now if I want to example switch to simply stunning I can just place it over apex?

Generally speaking, yes. But you will need to read each ROM thread and follow their install instructions to make sure you can safely go to a different custom ROM.
So i was on liberty rom 2.0.1 and wanted to upgrade to the latest version in the nightlys. So i SBF back to version 2.3.320.MB810 and when i go to settings -> about phone -> systems update, it says i am already up to date. Can i get to gingerbread from this version or do i need to sbf to 2.3.340 to get to gingerbread.
I think you have to be on. 340, but I wouldn't encourage you to take the OTA to GB, download a prerooted .596 GB (team black hat...) then go from there.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
So i sbf to .340 and tried to install the tbh .596 GB update, with the part1 and part 2 files. When i boot into recovery and try to apply the zip it give a error code of 7 during validation of the current system. According to the instructions the only thing i am not doing exactly is i am using the droid x boot straper not the droid 2. would that cause this. dont see the need to spend 3 bucks on something i already have
Try turning off USB Debugging prior to booting into recovery. I think I read somewhere that Droid X bootstrapper works fine as long as you do that first.
Ok so i hope someone can help me out on this i finally got to a TBH rooted GB install.
My next step is to get back on liberty because i just cant stand motoblur, gingerblut is a bit better than what came with froyo but it still sucks. the battery life is terrible and i cant stand all the bloat ware and crappy widgets.
I am not sure what issue i am having 3g data worked fine in liberty GB0.4 but if i ever moved past that it would stop working. So i spent a day and sbf to .340 then installed the TBH rooted stock GB. I then downloaded the libertyGB0.8 did a data wipe and installed it. No 3g data. I really love liberty have donated to them buying the pro toolbox and such. I really want to get back to liberty but i guess if i have to find a different rom i will . Anyone have any idea as to why if i go past liberty 0.4 i loose 3g?
Ok so this issue has expanded past just liberty. I tried to flash apex 2.0 rc1 with the same issue no 3g data. Phone calls and all of that work but no 3g data. i would really like some help with this dont want to get stuck on moto ginger. Will more than likely just go buy a different phone if i cant get this to work
You just need to flash the updated kernal. I had the same problem, and fixed it. let me see if I can find the thread with the info. All u need to do is download the zip file, put on sd card and flash. and itll work just fine. Ill look it up and post back. The 591_kernel_update.zip is what you need
Here is the file:

my wifes epic is beat up (women just kill there phones) and acting funny. my epic is in good condition (i am no longer with sprint) but i have installed cm7 on it, so i want to activate it on her account. problem is that when i call sprint, they want me to enter dialer codes and its not working. So what do i need to do? mind you i already have my cm7 phone set up with all her favorite apps, and sms's so i would hate to have to go back to a stock rom, activate it and install cm7 fresh.
what do i need to do? thanks, and yes i did a google search, and i am aware that its reccomended to flash a stockish rom and then go back to cm7 after activating, but those were old threads, i am hoping maybe there is some new discovery to make things easier.
Thanks in advance.
You could use the temp boot FC09 utility. Dialer codes are only available on TW roms. You can find it on the epic cm9 website. It will allow you to boot the rom once from the sd card and go right back to your cm7 setup on the next boot. Otherwise just make a nandroid, flash a mtd tw rom, then restore your cm7 nandroid after activation.
