Has anyone tried the new PlayOn app available for Android? I was disappointed to learn of Netflix's presence on Android will only encompass future Qualcomm powered phones. (Still hoping someone will be able to modify it). But PlayOn seems like the next best thing for Netflix streaming to our Android powered HD2's.
Just looking for any review or feedback. I will download the server app to my computer tonight and give an update for those that are interested.
Update: No one interested? Oh well. I said I'd update so... Confirmed. Netflix does indeed work with this app. Although, I had problems with the actual app. Was able to log into my Netflix account through the app; browse and view my instant queues but it wouldn't play for some reason. (Might be due to my slow internet from within my house though). But using stock browser and going to the playon mobile site I was able to stream my movies. Hulu did not work for some reason though. I have a modified flash to use with my hulu app and i thought that might be the problem. Uninstalled it and installed flash from market but hulu still asks me to install flash even going through playon. So not sure what to make of it. All in all: use hulu app if you want hulu. use playon if you want netflix. =]
What rom and version of flash player are you using. Not working on core droid rom for me.
NexusHD2 Gingerbread by tytung. And I use a modified apk of flash I found somewhere on xda. Lets me play Hulu. I think it was in the Nexus One threads somewhere. I don't remember.
i tried it. its slow. it works

I have had this software for quite some time and I must say it is great, best app I have. Not only for Netflix access on my GTab but all the other content I can watch on my phone as well as my tablet. More than worth the price, I can't imagine not having this software and app. I am able to stream videos from my home computer ,using my HD2 as a wifi router, to my GTab. The video quality over 3G is more than acceptable and the stream is usually steady enough to watch a movie or a live sporting event using ESPN 3 (yes it gives you access to that plus Hulu and about 15 othe chanels) I know I sound like a commercial but I have no stake in the company. Its a great piece of software that I feel everyone who watches online content would love and appreciate.
I know this topic is from while ago, but since it discusses PlayOn, I didnt want to open new one.
I installed PlayON as well. Server runs Ok on my PC, I am able to watch Hulu with my FAT+ and TV.
Recently got HTC Sensation 4G. Installed the PlayOn app, in the Server on my PC I enabled MObile access, router configured automatically, Mobile access test is green - passed.
Here is the problem - on my phone I can see the server, I can browse channels, but when i go to a show, I just see cover art and few lines of info in a table below the cover art.
Nothing is clickable and cant make it start anything.
I am using LAN access if that matters.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Playon issue with Rooted Gingerbread Bionic
I am having similar issues with my new rooted Bionic. My rooted Droid2 worked fine yesterday - but, my Bionic does not stream Playon on wifi or on 4g/3g. I don't know if it is an issue with being rooted - since I rooted the Bionic as soon as got it. I am able to find the server and browse channels, however, it will not play videos. It displays the first frame and then just goes black and eventually displays "Stream not found null". Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've been using playon since it was beta to stream hulu, youtube, and all of the media I have on my home computer (avi's, mp4's, mkv's etc, along with a ton of other programming) to my tv through my xbox360 by way of UPnP. With their latest update, now it's also streaming all of that to my EVO! Playon mobile is still in beta, and it requires a premium registration, but works well enough. Once they get it out of beta it will have its own player, and will work over 3g - not just wifi.
Just wanted to share.
Sweet I used to use that for my 360 a couple years ago. It was great till I realized it was kinda stupid to stream something to another device that was a foot away literally! I will probally go check that out, afterall my phone gets 30 or 40 feet from my computer sometmes!
I just tried this on my Viewsonic G tablet and it seems to work ok.
I had my browser user agent set to desktop and it would not work. Once I changed it to Android it starting working. I'm also using the Playon Media Folder sharing to stream mkv and other video files from the Synology NAS to my G tablet.
Going to do some more testing..
Tried it with my EVO and when running Froyo on my Nook Color... really cool! Very happy to be able to watch Hulu and Netflix from anywhere !
First post..Long time reader. My apologies if this needs to be somewhere else. Have a rooted Incredible with 2.2. Have read other threads, but am still trying to find a decent app or website for LIVE TV. I am NOT interested in video clips, old TV shows, movies or the like. Only LIVE TV like Espn, etc. ADTHE is somewhat helpful, but half the channels do not work. Some channels request that you download Veetle or Vshare. Please correct me, but I do not believe Veetle works on a mobile browser, and while I downloaded Vshare, it doesn't seem to do anything to help. Am I doing something wrong? I can in fact get some channels to work on ADTHE, but as I said, some just don't load; i.e Nickleodeon, SyFy, etc. Do any of you pros here know of any other app I need, or if there is a Veetle app for Android, or if I need to do something different. I have not only the stock browser, but also have Skyfire and Dolphin, but I get the same results with all of the browsers. This is a great forum, and I appreciate your help. thanks.
Orb.com
I put a tuner card in my pc and use orb.com website not the paid app to watch everything my tuner can tune. Also gives me access to all my music, recorded tv, folders, and can steam the webcam. Cheaper than a Slingbox and legal.
Thanks for your reply. Are you watching live TV on your PC or your Incredible? I know how to watch on my PC, but am trying to find a decent, reliable way to watch on my phone. I have checked the Market, and can't seem to find a TV tuner for mobile, or any other TV apps. Believe me, I have tried them all. If ADTHE would actually show all of the channels in their content list, that would be fine. But too many are always offline, or the like. Thanks again for your response. Anybody else know how to make all of those ADTHE channels actually work, especially Nickleodeon and SyFy? Please, live only.
I watch from my phone, anything my pc has on it or that the tuner can get, including webcams..
Orb will stream to most smart phones, you can set the output to flash, windows media .asx, or winamp .pls...
If you have Apple gadgets and the webpage wont work, try the free OrbLive app. Reviews say the paid version is kinda buggy.. I just got an touch 4th gen and it is not wanting to play... I have used Treo's, Blackberries, WinMo 6.5, and Android and have had it work great.. not sure what's up with this crapple right now...
Never knew you could do this, thanks for the info.
hi,is it possible to stream movies wirelessly from a vista laptop onto the a500 through the home network? if yes,how do i set it up? cos i've tried everything
Well if you plan to use only on the home network their clear.fi app works. For remote access I have been using subsonic it does require a donation to allow video streaming

Do you know how to get other folders to show up from the clear.fi app? All I can see for video streaming from my PC, is a video/collections folder. I would like to be able to see my media folder that I have on my desktop.
I am using plex and it works very well.

How in the heck did you get plex to work? Did you change the default player to something else? If so how?
I load a movie and it times out on every one. When I contacted the makers of plex they say that it is not working on the acer yet and offer a refund.
I use ps3 media server on the pc and upnplay which is free from the android market for the A500 , The ps3 media server trans-codes on the fly and I use mobo player from upn to play the content. easy as 123 setup and works perfectly and also means I can play any file type. 1080p is a bit jerky but 720p is as smooth as silk. Did I mention its all free

I think that the Acer app only shows/shares the stuff you have in my documents. So you can't watch movies through it if you have them on another HD (like I do sadly).
I am able to see all of my share's on any of my drives. But my home network is wide open on this side of the router.
Might check your sharing settings on you pc, and your firewall if applicable.
i do recomend subsonic wholely just a one time donation unoocks video streaming. you select the folders to share music and movies and the app is free on android and one port needed to be opened to view from anywhere tablet phone or say work computer. also to with the ability to download the content to
I have tried:
Plex: Works but slow as hell and it didn't let me skip a part of the movie so I had to watch every movie from the start.
Subsonic: IMHO a Plex clone so I didn't bother with it and I couldn't test it to see if it streams movies any better.
Upnplay: Ugly and clunky interface but it does stream movies from any UPNP server without installing any additional software and it's free. It uses your default browser and it can skip in a movie so I'm using that. It's not pretty but it does work well.

I won't donate just to test it but the web interface was worse than what Plex offers and I've tried Plex (was not impressed) so I've just skipped it.
As I've said. The best solution is the one that doesn't require any additional software on my PC. So even though Upnplay is ugly it gets the job done.
P.S.: I have my opinions you have yours so unless don't force your on me and I won't force mine on you. I've compiled a list that would be handy for me a few days ago when I was searching for the same thing and I hope that helps someone. Bickering over trivial stuff sure won't.
root your Iconia
setup nls_utf8 and cifs module
mount cifs share using mount manager
use moboplayer to play all the content
Never had a single problem!

Subsonic is free to try, the app is much more intuitive than the web interface when used on an Android device (the web interface of any program that also provides a native application will be much less intuitive on any platform). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with forming an opinion such as yours, but I will say Subsonic and Plex are two different products, trying one piece of one product and using that as a reason to dismiss another different (and competing) product is just being ignorant. If you want to be ignorant, run with it, but don't ask for peoples advice and opinions and simply dismiss them based on your own ignorance. Or, just don't ask for advice if you aren't willing to listen to it. Oh.. wait, that's right.. this isn't even your thread, troll.
Now, as for the OP, if this is simply to watch inside your own network, things like Subsonic, Plex, etc. are more than what you need. All you really need is what mrvanes outlined, or even just a file manager that supports network shares (like File Manager HD, File Expert, EStrongs, etc). Browse to your media and open it (a good file manager will not require to copy to local first) with the program of your choosing.

I've been using Buzz Player that reads all shared folders (SAMBA), its not without its problems, but it works for me.
i have tried them all upnp streams every format avi mp4 mkv audio codecs like ac3 stream beautifully..its free and i acess from any network ...
I know AllShare is a Samsung application. I have it on my Galaxy S phone, and I have found it quite usefull for streaming music and video in my house to my phone. It is also on the Galaxy Tab, I believe, although I have never seen or used one. I would like to be able to use this sort of functionality for the A500.
Is there a pulled AllShare APK from the Galaxy Tab that works and is available for the A500? Or are there other good DLNA apps available? The only one I have found so far is DoubleTwist's AirTwist, which will share the music/video on the android device to other DLNA devices, but cannot play from other devices. Any suggestions?
check your app drawer
the acer tablet has dlna server built in..
I have used it but just to test to see if it works. and it does..
the app is acer clear.fi.. it should be in your app drawer.. it works with another app on your tablet called Media Server..
Search the android market for aVia.. its great and works with nearly all media types..
A like Bubble uPNP

I think he was looking for a client, not server.
To the OP: BubbleUPnP ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp&feature=search_result ) is apparently a very capable DLNA-client. I have not tried it myself so I cannot say anything from personal experience.
I use BubbleUPnP, great app.

Clear.fi does both. it uses the media server to share files on the tab.. Clear.fi app will find all dlna servers running on the same network.. mine will see this Notebook i am typing on right now.. Bonnie's Desktop. Our Linux Server in the basement. My Desktop in bedroom Our Samsung Smart TV. But it does have some lag time each time you start it.. I guess it does not remember the devices or content. aVIA is quick.. I Looked at the bubble one as well it seems promising but aVia looks more sleek .

I cannot get it to see any DLNA servers on my network. Not that it really matters, DLNA is a horribly broken and limited framework and really needs a modern replacement. (Again a topic I've written about on Google+ before.)
Thank you all for your help and comments! I apologize for my delayed response, I've been busy.
I have tried both aVia and BubbleUPnP, and both meet my needs quite nicely, thank you. Clear.fi or whatever does not appear to be part of the ROM I am currently using, so I never saw it to try it. I think these other two options work better for me anyway.
Thanks again for the help!
That is what I use. I have not found anything better than that.

I've tried several client software for streaming videos from my home media server to my Android tablet/phone. I found that 'Qloud Media' is the best in relation to performance. You may download a free version from the Android Market.
To make it work, you will need to install 'Qloud Media Server' on a Windows PC, which is also free.

Hello all. I have a Go flex home network storage device with loads of movies in avi format. I'm trying to find a way to stream these movies from my NAS to my nexus 10 without having to convert the files. I would also like to do this when I'm on the go, so if I'm tethered from my phone to my tablet I can use that connection to stream. Does anyone know of an app or setup that can accomodate this?
I store most of my content on my PC and use EMiT to stream it to my N7 not got my N10 yet but will let you know when it arrives also mobile data in my area sucks so i cant comment there but over wifi its pretty damn flawless
Thanks for the input. Mobile data strong here in Melbourne Florida so....I'm going to check out emit. I've never heard of it. I'll let you know how it goes.
Bubbleunpnp?
Can't you use xbmc for that? I've never done it but I thought that was a big thing with xbmc
Edit: yes grab xbmc from here http://xbmc.org/download/ you should be able to pick up your nas
App: BS Player is able to see your Nas file structure and plays almost all video codecs.
All of these are viable options but I'm not too network savvy and they don't have a lot of support for help. EMit looked the easiest to set up, and I actually got it connected, but the playback is incredibly slow. I got xbmc on the tablet, but I can't seem to connect to the network drive. I can't figure out what port the nas is using. Simply an lost trying to configure bsplayer. I'm going with xbmc for the moment, gonna google around and see what I can find. I'll post what I find.
With Bsplayer just go to menu and click LAN mode... It should scan and find you nas... Forgot about this one
Got BS Player working on my home network. Gave up on xbmc, it seemed to only work on home network. I'm trying to get it off mobile data. Still playing with BS player....
Oooh I didn't realize you were trying to get it off mobile data... Can't help ya there bro lol good luck
That's what I get for speed reading the OP lol
Thanks....does anyone know much about samba?
All I know is ES explorer will pick up anything that is using the samba protocol...
Yeah, I noticed that. I know I tried to download it, and I don't seem to be able to find an already compiled copy. Just to source to compile myself, which I don't know how to do. I know I'm missing something. There has got to be a way to stream music and movies from an nas to this thing. What really sucks is that nas came with an app on the market (goflex access), but I was broke by 4.2.2 and is no longer supported as the device is no longer manufactured.
I'm going to bed. More work on this tomorrow.

Several apps come with their own SAMBA/CIFS drivers for accessing that type of network share.
1) The fore mentioned ES File Explorer
2) XBMC (I have been using the ARM7 HW accelerated experimental version)
3) Mizuu - Movies & TV shows
4) MovieBrowser UPnP/DLNA
If you require native Samba/CIFS support for Android 4.2.2 things are a lot trickier due to multi-user support. You require a Custom ROM. Here is an explanation and a custom ROM with that capability built in.
