[Q] stream videos from nas - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I have a Go flex home network storage device with loads of movies in avi format. I'm trying to find a way to stream these movies from my NAS to my nexus 10 without having to convert the files. I would also like to do this when I'm on the go, so if I'm tethered from my phone to my tablet I can use that connection to stream. Does anyone know of an app or setup that can accomodate this?

I store most of my content on my PC and use EMiT to stream it to my N7 not got my N10 yet but will let you know when it arrives also mobile data in my area sucks so i cant comment there but over wifi its pretty damn flawless

Thanks for the input. Mobile data strong here in Melbourne Florida so....I'm going to check out emit. I've never heard of it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Bubbleunpnp?

Can't you use xbmc for that? I've never done it but I thought that was a big thing with xbmc
Edit: yes grab xbmc from here http://xbmc.org/download/ you should be able to pick up your nas

App: BS Player is able to see your Nas file structure and plays almost all video codecs.

All of these are viable options but I'm not too network savvy and they don't have a lot of support for help. EMit looked the easiest to set up, and I actually got it connected, but the playback is incredibly slow. I got xbmc on the tablet, but I can't seem to connect to the network drive. I can't figure out what port the nas is using. Simply an lost trying to configure bsplayer. I'm going with xbmc for the moment, gonna google around and see what I can find. I'll post what I find.

With Bsplayer just go to menu and click LAN mode... It should scan and find you nas... Forgot about this one

Got BS Player working on my home network. Gave up on xbmc, it seemed to only work on home network. I'm trying to get it off mobile data. Still playing with BS player....

Oooh I didn't realize you were trying to get it off mobile data... Can't help ya there bro lol good luck
That's what I get for speed reading the OP lol

Thanks....does anyone know much about samba?

All I know is ES explorer will pick up anything that is using the samba protocol...

Yeah, I noticed that. I know I tried to download it, and I don't seem to be able to find an already compiled copy. Just to source to compile myself, which I don't know how to do. I know I'm missing something. There has got to be a way to stream music and movies from an nas to this thing. What really sucks is that nas came with an app on the market (goflex access), but I was broke by 4.2.2 and is no longer supported as the device is no longer manufactured.
I'm going to bed. More work on this tomorrow.

Several apps come with their own SAMBA/CIFS drivers for accessing that type of network share.
1) The fore mentioned ES File Explorer
2) XBMC (I have been using the ARM7 HW accelerated experimental version)
3) Mizuu - Movies & TV shows
4) MovieBrowser UPnP/DLNA
If you require native Samba/CIFS support for Android 4.2.2 things are a lot trickier due to multi-user support. You require a Custom ROM. Here is an explanation and a custom ROM with that capability built in.

[Q] Video streaming apps

I have been looking in to this, as my Xoom comes in tomorrow, and Im just wondering if someone has been successful in streaming video to their Xoom.
I have a Tversity server running on my PC - any apps that can browse and stream from the TVERSITY library?
I have seen an app like gmote 2.0, and UpNp app - do these work to stream movies and TV shows from my computer server to the XOOM?
Sorry if this is already discussed elsewhere, I did a few searches but nothing is specific for the xoom that I saw.
I dont care about 3g streaming - just want wifi streaming.
Basically - recommendations for MEDIA SERVER ON PC (like tversity) to stream movies onto android.
I'm assuming your pc is on your home network (duh) and you are willing to share the folders. Use cifsmanager and mount the shared folder to the xoom, then with any media player on the xoom it will see the folder, open it and can play the files. No need to set up a server, just have the pc on. It will even work off a nas. Thats how i'm running it, you can find a thread started by me on this subject with how I got it working.

UPnPlay works great for what you are looking to do.

[Q] Media Streaming

Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone has had any success streaming media to their A7. I currently have a NAS drive on my network and stream media to all my other devices (Archos 70, Archos 5 Android, EVO, etc.) but for some reason I cannot get the A7 to actually play anything from this network location.
I have been able to navigate to the files themselves, but playing them has not worked out so well. I've tried a variety of Apps and different file formats, but none seem to work. I can attempt to open files, and even get prompted to use various Apps, but nothing seems to work after that, it just fails. Anyone have any ideas or success with this effort please let me know as this is a biggie for me.
Sorry if this is a dup question, as I could not find anything about this for this device in particular.
And many thanks to Dexter, you've made this device surpass it's otherwise limited capabilities. Seems silly such a quality product is being left behind by the Stream, but this seems to be the model of all tablet makers these days. Pump them out as fast as possible regardless of full functionality and forget about them a month later!
The only way I've gotten streaming to work is by using PlayOn.
hi I can access all my movies on my hard drives and play on my a7 this way
download TVersity media server from tveristy.com. I just use the free version. It will change your home page when you install it so you will need to change it back. Install that on your pc and then add your movie files to the library.
On your a7 download a app called skifta from the market and install that. when you run this choose a media source choose TVeristy media server. Under player choose your a7.
then choose browse and play media you will see your library files you added in tversity and some other stuff. You will need a video player installed on your a7. I have act 1 video player and also rockplayer. It will let you choose which to use when you select movie.
select one and your movie should start. Your movies have to be in a compatable format.
it also will let you play music and view photos
I also have a wd live movie box on my tv. With this same setup I can redirect the movie to wdlive box by choosing it as player and the it will playback the movie on my tv.
Thanks for the advice (both of you). I was really hoping for a more direct approach though. I've used apps like Orb that require you to run a host computer, and my NAS drive (Buffalo Linkstation) has a web app built in, but both these methods have proven very slow and often frustrating when trying to access via mobile networks. It just seems odd to me that the A7 doesn't do this while most other Android hardware does. Granted I'm more familiar with Archos products and they specialize in media players. Will keep trying though, Thanks!

the platform you refer to is different from Tegra2/Nvidia, and you can blame Nvidia for the stock codecs they support.. they partly added mkv's now in latest update.. but 1080p mkv's still stutter on a7 and other tegra2 devices..
LG with their Optimus 2X added their own custom player, and since its incorporated into the framework, its hard to make it run on other devices for now.. but nvidia is primary source for what we can use it for now..
archos is a different story and they havent got what tegra2 can offer for the future, so it might play alot of media's but not perfect for android at all.
Thanks for the info Dex!
Think I'm gonna get a XOOM (been drooling over some honey), then I can officially make my A7 a tinker toy!
by the way, the new 1.41 rom kicks ass, the motoblur keyboard is soo much better!

[SOLVED] Play media file over network share? (windows share, SAMBA)

I swear this worked some time ago on some media player, and I'm not having some "Smoke Two Joints" hazy recollection (fun song, BTW )
Anyone know how to make it possible to play a media file via a network share on our Epics? I can easily access network shares via Astro with the SMB module, or ES File Explorer, and I suspect many other file browsers. However, to play them, I have to copy them over local. The stock video player (which I prefer) barfs on network files.
For a 1GB 720p typical one-hour TV show, this is a real pain. My home network and the Epic have plenty of bandwidth to stream files like this and keep up with real-time playing.
So, anyone know how to make this work? App that I need? Particular media player that works?
Thanks!
EDIT: Solution: CIFSManager, available in the market. You'll need to be rooted, though.
Sounds like a cool app if it exists. Can't remember if samsung allshare did that.
You will have to mount the samba partition, but you need a compatible kernel with cifsmanager and I don't know if we have that yet.
The other option is to run a streaming service on your pc.
Quick google found these options for streaming from pc:
Tversity + nswPlayer
Skifta
VLC Stream

Man, I such a lazy fock sometimes. After posting this thread, I then bothered to search around on the net, and found several threads on various boards about CIFSManager. That's the ticket -- it's awesome, and does exactly what I was looking for.
Now to set up a VPN tunnel into my WinXP box so I can use this from outside my home network too!
BTW, CIFSManager working like a charm with Bonsai 4.0.0. I'd guess it works with 4.0.1 too (can't go there yet because of Voodoo sound, which is fabulous, but screws my homegrown ALSA-based balance control -- I have hearing loss in my right ear).
Only problem found is I get an error trying to unmount shares. Big woop. Reboot.

Question regarding Clear Fi and Media Server

I wondering what does Clear fi and Media Server apps does and how can i best use them ?
Update - I was able to figure out what clear fi app is all about but now that brings me to my next question. how come i am not seeing any computers on the same network in clear fi app. i have Windows and Mac computers connected to the same wifi network
Well, clear.fi doesn't really work too well unless your media servers are other Acer products, it seems. It saw my servers once, the first time I opened it, and never again -- and that time it wouldn't show any files anyway.
You're better off just getting Skifta or uPnPlay from the market for media server browsing; they have the additional advantage that they'll open your videos in an external player of your choice, so you can play a wider range of formats. (I personally like MoboPlayer; make sure you get the Tegra 2 codec pack for it.)

Thanks for the reply and since i dont have acer laptops that means clear fi is done lol and will i be able to find the mobo player codec in the market as well ?

Yup. The player should give you the option to grab the codec pack after install.
My ClearFi app see my pcs just fine. Not sure if it matters but my network is only firewalled at the poe (point of entry, e.g. router). I didn't have to alter or make changes to anything.
For those stubborn video files that won't play over the network using ClearFi I simply browse the network using ES File Explorer then open with my favorite player. If you don't already have ES, please consider grabbing it from the market. It is absolutely one of my most used apps.

[Q] how do u stream movies wirelessly on a vista pc to your acer a500

hi,is it possible to stream movies wirelessly from a vista laptop onto the a500 through the home network? if yes,how do i set it up? cos i've tried everything
Well if you plan to use only on the home network their clear.fi app works. For remote access I have been using subsonic it does require a donation to allow video streaming
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
Do you know how to get other folders to show up from the clear.fi app? All I can see for video streaming from my PC, is a video/collections folder. I would like to be able to see my media folder that I have on my desktop.
I am using plex and it works very well.

How in the heck did you get plex to work? Did you change the default player to something else? If so how?
I load a movie and it times out on every one. When I contacted the makers of plex they say that it is not working on the acer yet and offer a refund.
I use ps3 media server on the pc and upnplay which is free from the android market for the A500 , The ps3 media server trans-codes on the fly and I use mobo player from upn to play the content. easy as 123 setup and works perfectly and also means I can play any file type. 1080p is a bit jerky but 720p is as smooth as silk. Did I mention its all free

I think that the Acer app only shows/shares the stuff you have in my documents. So you can't watch movies through it if you have them on another HD (like I do sadly).
I am able to see all of my share's on any of my drives. But my home network is wide open on this side of the router.
Might check your sharing settings on you pc, and your firewall if applicable.
i do recomend subsonic wholely just a one time donation unoocks video streaming. you select the folders to share music and movies and the app is free on android and one port needed to be opened to view from anywhere tablet phone or say work computer. also to with the ability to download the content to
I have tried:
Plex: Works but slow as hell and it didn't let me skip a part of the movie so I had to watch every movie from the start.
Subsonic: IMHO a Plex clone so I didn't bother with it and I couldn't test it to see if it streams movies any better.
Upnplay: Ugly and clunky interface but it does stream movies from any UPNP server without installing any additional software and it's free. It uses your default browser and it can skip in a movie so I'm using that. It's not pretty but it does work well.

I won't donate just to test it but the web interface was worse than what Plex offers and I've tried Plex (was not impressed) so I've just skipped it.
As I've said. The best solution is the one that doesn't require any additional software on my PC. So even though Upnplay is ugly it gets the job done.
P.S.: I have my opinions you have yours so unless don't force your on me and I won't force mine on you. I've compiled a list that would be handy for me a few days ago when I was searching for the same thing and I hope that helps someone. Bickering over trivial stuff sure won't.
root your Iconia
setup nls_utf8 and cifs module
mount cifs share using mount manager
use moboplayer to play all the content
Never had a single problem!

Subsonic is free to try, the app is much more intuitive than the web interface when used on an Android device (the web interface of any program that also provides a native application will be much less intuitive on any platform). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with forming an opinion such as yours, but I will say Subsonic and Plex are two different products, trying one piece of one product and using that as a reason to dismiss another different (and competing) product is just being ignorant. If you want to be ignorant, run with it, but don't ask for peoples advice and opinions and simply dismiss them based on your own ignorance. Or, just don't ask for advice if you aren't willing to listen to it. Oh.. wait, that's right.. this isn't even your thread, troll.
Now, as for the OP, if this is simply to watch inside your own network, things like Subsonic, Plex, etc. are more than what you need. All you really need is what mrvanes outlined, or even just a file manager that supports network shares (like File Manager HD, File Expert, EStrongs, etc). Browse to your media and open it (a good file manager will not require to copy to local first) with the program of your choosing.
