CWM 3 - EVO Shift 4G General

Where can i find the newest version of CWM for Evo Shift so i can use EXT 4 roms etc..

Android Development -> Evervolv
preludedrew is the only dev currently pushing it, AFAIK.
Sent from my HTC Speedy

Also if you don't want to flash to the latest CWM you can simply fast boot to it and keep your existing CWM, im not sure what the pros and cons are for either or. I gather so far some folks ROMS can only be installed via one or the other.

ok thanks.....so thers no real need for cwm 3 on the shift atm????

There is if you ever want to take advantage of ext4, that's not necessarily right now though, is it?
Like the user above stated, you could simply boot into it instead via fastboot. You can probably even get away with flashing the gingerbread roms on 2.x, but when mods start coming into play, you'll need to use 3.x for the script support.

Hopefully the wiki is kept up to date on all the options. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy

cwm2.5 is currently the best option untill there is a fully working and compiled cwm3. once there is an official, 3 will be the way to go. most developers have been using the rom flashing scripts(called edify scripts) that can be used in both cwm3 and 2.5. id say just hold out till an official comes out unless your rom develeper specifically tell you to.

why so diffrent from phone's?

After reading some of these rom installation instructions it seems to me the SGT roms are a lot "harder" to install than the android cell phones. Even with running Clockwork mod 3.0-beta it would seem you should be able to install straight from the sd card, but I haven't heard anything saying this is possible.
Guess my question is why is the installation of rom's so different from phones and tablet?
Also i really wish this forum was seperated into 2 catagories CDMA tabs and sim versions of the tab.
Errrr you can install roms from the SD via cwm

I too wish it was separated....i have a Sprint tab and are now more confused than ever and I flash roms on my DInc every couple of days.

Well, it is pretty much like my HTC Desire for me now. Just use ODIN to install MoDaCo's Kernel (either RFS or ext4 version, ext4 conversion is well worth it though) and then you can use CWM, included with the Kernel, to install new ROMs, Kernels, etc, just like normal.
I do agree there is a lot of conflicting info but that is kinda expected with development on a new device. It is all starting to mature, which is sweet.
Thanks Good info
Ya I know its a maturing device but hopefully in the future we can have is ether separated into separate forums or have sticky's with links to most popular stuff for each version of the device.

[Q] Roms, Kernels proper way to upgrade

I have the shift with android 2.2 with kernel version 2.6.32.21-gcd7abbd, stock rom. I want to upgrade to a new rom and kernel but am not really sure what the proper process is. Do I have to upgrade a rom first then the kernel or vice versa. Is there an upgrade process that does both in one swoop? I rooted my shift following the directions on this site (automated root process). I would like to use gingerbread of some sort. Is there a readers digest version to follow? I apologize for such a noob question but I don't want to break my phone. Thanks in advance Rob
Try the MikG executive edition listed in the development section. It's Gingerbread, and has some sense 3.0 in it and is fast enough that it doesn't need a kernel. The proper way to flash is make a backup of contacts and apps, then boot into recovery, then wipe user data, clear the cache and dalvik cache, then flash the Rom and then the kernel if one is available for that Rom. All Roms come with a kernel I believe, but some devs make different ones with different capabilities
You should also make a back up of your current rom before any wipeing or flashing....
Better to be safe than sorry....
I run CM7 with the 1.8ghz kernal and havn't found anything better suited for my needs
Thank-you for your help

Some roms require you to also install the google apps as well right after flashing the rom. It's really been hit or miss with me on when I flash a kernel though. Before or after resetting the device after the rom flash.

Take your time
Just wanted to tell you to read read read and take your time. The Epic is a little more in depth unit, and the best thing you can do is research. There is a lot of memory and ram tweaks, tons of roms, and tons of themes and hacks to use. I suggest going to YouTube and checking out some of QBking77's 'how to' videos, he has tons of great stuff and is really good about how he explains everything, he also is an avid supporter...meaning he definitely will get back to you if you have any questions. As the previous poster said, it is wise to read through as much as possible though, as this unit has been out awhile and there is a lot of information, I would say 95% of your questions are most likely already answered. But good luck!

Even with reading lots of threads it would be hard to know where to start.
What you need to know:
ODIN - a tool which lets you directly flash "stuff" (roms, kernels, recoveries) to your phone when in download mode. Find threads/directions to get this all setup because you'll need it. (drivers, etc) Be careful with Odin, it can brick your phone if you don't follow directions.
CWM 3101 - Current version of clockwork recovery mod. This is what you need to be able to flash things from the SD Card.
EI22 - Current version of Gingerbread OS. Don't use anything older. The stock kernel from samsung will overwrite any custom recovery at bootup, so if you want CWM you will need to use a custom kernel. Most (all?) custom ROMs include a custom kernel so if you go the route of a custom ROM this becomes a non-issue.

rocket321, Very good information for the beginners.
Here is the link directly to QBking77. It's a step-by-step video explaining how to install my personal favorite ROM to date, "ACS ICS 4.0". Very clean look, very stable, pre-rooted, overclockable.

Another thing worth mentioning is that only certain Kernel's with work certain ROM's. The kernel included in that ACS ICS ROM is the Samurai Kernel. I do recommend installing the "Samurai-2.6.35_gen1.0.4+" with the ACS ICS ROM at...

Good explanation, I didn't mean to sound off putting by saying do your own work and research...there are plenty of people in here willing to help, hence why I mentioned QBKing77; dude knows his ****, and his how to videos are great for noobs (myself included) and experts alike. I just believe you should do your homework...get some base knowledge, and jump in...you can learn a lot from how to videos, but you'll never get better of you just rely on other people to show you what to do.
Odin is key, get comfortable with this program.

Yeah, definitely get rid of the stock Sammy mUSB, it was the cause of a lot of my initial problems. Blackberry and HTC cables have worked great.
Like I sad, these devices have been out awhile, and there is TONS of really great stuff available, check out the development section, and just absorb as much as you can...also, take advantage of the general and q and sections of the forum.
Good luck!

Unfamiliar to HTC

So I offered to help a co worker out since she is completely unfamilar with rooting or flashing. I'm more familiar with Moto and Samsung, never had an HTC so not sure how different it is but basically her Evo 4g has been acting very buggy. I think she is on Synergy RLS 1 and I want to put a more up to date, stable rom just not entirely sure how to go about it. This is the phone's info.
Model number PC36100
Android version 2.3.3
HTC Sense version 2.1
Software Number 2.76.651.4
PRI Version 1.52_003
PRL 03026 Kernel version 2.6.35.10-dodge kernel_v1.6-g5512dll-dirtydodge #6
Baseband 1.07.00.1129
Build number Synergy RLS 1
Browser version WebKit/533.1
Sent from my XT875 using Tapatalk
The first thing I would suggest if she likes her synergy would be to reboot into recovery via holding down power button and selecting recovery, once in recover use volume rocker to navigate to wipe menu and select it with power button. Once in wipe menu navigate to cache and select it with power button to wipe and do the same for dalvik cache also. The navigate back to the reboot option. That should take care of her issues if its something that hasn't been done previously.
But if she's set on trying a new rom,
First thing is to find which ever rom you will be using and download that. Next hold the power button for power options and select recovery. When in recovery look for backup/restore. You need to do a current backup in case anything goes wrong when flashing a new rom. So after you have your backup your current nandroid, you navigate back to the wipe menu and wipe everything except SD card. Then navigate to flash menu and flash rom then navigate reboot device. That's the basics any way

Is it just me, or do these software versions look way wrong and/or old? So old, that I don't even remember them, and I've had my Evo since launch day. I'm hoping someone else will jump in to confirm or deny that the versions I'm seeing look way off.
Like the kernel, I've never even heard of that kernel. Where did she get it? Dirtydodge? Never seen that on xda. On synergy, I would recommend flashing the freedom or chop suey kernel (thru recovery, just whip cache and dalvik cache first). Or reflash synergy rls1 over itself wiping only cache and dalvik cache to restore the kernel that came with synergy rom initially.
PRL 03026? Never heard of it. Current sprint PRL for most is 60683. She should flash a stock sprint/HTC sense 1.0 ROM (I would suggest tommytomatoe Classic or brad560s stock ROM, both found in the Evo development forum) so that she can go to settings>update profile and PRL.
11.29 radio/baseband is froyo-era radio (Android 2.2), and also should be updated. Radio can be flashed thru hboot or recovery. Check thread by Calkulin for radios in the development forum. Flashing radios is touchy (you probably already know this), they appear to flash twice, but DO NOT PULL battery mid flash, just let it do its thing.
Her poor Evo needs so much maintenance I'm surprised it's functioning at all.
I would:
1. Reflash synergy over itself to get stablish again.
2. Update radio to 2.15.08.08 or 2.15.04.08
3. Select more current ROM to update to (there are many in dev section with dates attached)
4. Flash ROM
5. Go to settings and update Profile and PRL
6. Everything should be pretty up to date at this point.
7. Browse through dev forum to select ROM to settle on for daily driver (whether she wants to keep HTC/Sense or AOSP....All ICS roms for Evo are currently probably a bit too buggy for her [not for me, but to each their own]).
Newest Android version for HTC/sense ROM is 2.3.5. You'll want to probably be on 2.3.5, or at least 2.3.4. 2.3.5 fixed some issue with voice dialing while traveling over 35mph, or something like that...something I don't use.
Good luck. ......poor neglected Evo

That's not an evo 4g radio. As scottspa and evo4gnoob said, she may have the shift. If there's a slide out keyboard, it's the shift. If not, that's one of a kind haha
Thank you guys so much. You guys have a nice community compared to some of the ones I'm used to lol.
But that's what I've been trying to figure out. If she had an evo 4g or a evo 4g shift. She had gotten the phone from a friend of a friend and is completely new to android so she had no idea what the phone was. She kept called it an HTC. Anyways I googled the model number on from her phone info and the evo 4g kept popping up but yeah it does have a keyboard. So completely wrong forum lol thanks guys again for steering me in the right direction.

[Q] a little bothered by rom ics and all these options.

What I cant understand is why people are downloading the ics rom when the acer a500 auto updates to ics when you update your update service?
another question, I believe black thunder is an app that flashes roms and it gives you an sbk, and you put the "0" in front of the cpuid to do this
but what about clockwork rom manager? do I still need to do this or can I just backup with titaniam and run the zip off my sd card?
and im sorry but im painstaiking at this moment to find the roms for ics...I fould a list and FLEX-resurrection caught my attention although iv'e seen no screen shots or anything on it where might I find that,?
ROM's are way better than stock

Hi Zolteck,
ROM flashing to ICS was begun even before we got official ICS. Separately, ROMs by their nature are to allow some of us to do more with our devices than is possible with Stock eg extend battery/Overclock/USB audio/USB 3G. Also sometimes we can add features from future Android releases. In essence ROM's are super customizable and allow the user to convert his device for his purposes.
One of the issues that came with stock ICS was that its bootloader was locked thus preventing us from flashing new ROM's. There are many ways to now to circumvent this Blackthunder app being on of those. Thus, if you are on stock ICS you need to load CWM after unlocking. I am partial to this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675939. After unlocking you can run the zip file from your SD card and then reinstall your apps using Titanium Back up.
There are lot of ICS ROMs in the development forum. I encourage you to also give a couple of Jelly Bean ROMs a rip.
Best of luck and happy flashing
thanks
