Ok everyone, I know this sort of sounds like a noob thing. But this question has been bouncing around in my head for a good while now. And I would really like to get a definative answer.
Now my initial question was is there a deference between the two types of resets?....I ask this because of these reasons. One I am a T-Mobile US customer and I had to call Customer support about an issue I had with my HD2. It was freezing on the orange Windows splash screen. The customer service rep I first spoke with told me I needed to do a Factory Reset and walked me through the process. After I got off the phone with them I did a test soft reset to see if it would freeze again. And sure enough it froze on the orange Windows splash screen again. I called back, the second customer service rep told me that the first rep should have had me do a Hard Reset using the volume up and down keys and the power button, and this is the only true way to reset the HD2. The rep walked me through the procedure. Before I got off the phone with the rep I did three soft resets and my HD2 never froze on the orange Windows splash screen.
This made me wonder why this worked when my HD2 said "preparing first boot" each time and I had to go back through the set up on my HD2 both times. So I looked through the owners manual I downloaded from T-Mobile's website. And it made me further wonder if it is a difference between the two. The below quote comes straight from the owners manual.
There are two ways to do a factory reset. One way is perform a clear storage process through the phone settings. The other way is to perform a hard reset by pressing certain buttons on your phone, in cases when you are unable to start up your phone and enter the phone settings.

Now I come to the greatest site there is for a HD2 owner and my trusted companion XDA looking for a answer. This is what I found, a post in a thread called "[Q] Factory/Hard reset". this is the post by member AllGamer.
depends which of the 2 you are referring to
technically it's 3 methods
the user accessible one from the settings screen, only resets settings and internal SD stuff
the one via the secret code ones, formats everything
the one via the 3 button combo is a little less invasive than the secret code one

So can someone or everyone please elaborate more on this for me. I am truly trying to learn as much about my HD2 as possible. Plus I think this info would be very useful to others. And FYI this is the first thread I have ever started here at XDA. Thanks to one and all here at XDA this site ROCKS, and to every last developer here thank you. Also thanks in advance to anyone that replies.
OK the link you posted to there is referring to a samsung phone so Im not sure how thats relevant.
I was always led to beleive that the two methods of hard reset performed exactly the same function, the only diference being that one was possible to perform without booting WM.
Im sure someone with more technical knowledge than me could chip in and tell you if theres a difference but I dont think there is.........
Thanks for your reply.

It wad late last night when I posted me original post and I did not notice it was for a Samsung Galaxy S, that explains the third method that is mentioned in the post. But still it supports my hypothisis of it being some kind of difference. I have further evidence of this cause I advised someone in the T-Mobile forums to do a hard reset of their HD2. They responded and said they did a factory reset and it did not fix the problem. Then I told them they needed to do a hard reset with the external buttons not a factory reset. They then responded saying they did the hard reset and the problem was fixed. Further if it is not a difference besides the way you access them. Why the two different names? I don't know maybe someone will post here that knows or maybe I will find my answer on my own. Thanks for the response though.
Its the same thing. End of story.
Thanks for your post.

You may be right, and I might just be reading more into it than it is. But from my personal experiences and what I have found so far on this question (wich is not much) makes me believe it is not the same thing.
What I am really looking for here is for someone that fully understands the actual things that take place when you do both of these process to your phone. I mean like what actually happens at the programming level. You see what I kind of think happens is the Hard Reset doers a full systems cleansing, resets all registry entries and values by accerssing files that the Factory Reset does not have permission to. Also I think the Factory reset option is mor of a storage/memory cleansing making the phone appear to be reset to defaults without actually reseting all values. I have no actual substantial proof of this yet, it is just a a generalized hopothosis right now. So if I am just being stupid I appologize, but if I am not and someone can explain it to me I would be very thankful.
I always thought it was different ways of saying the same thing... and that the 2 methods performed the same operation. It might be possible that the clear storage way doesn't do a full hard/factory reset and it just clears storage.
Bump Bump
Ok it has been a couple of days and I am really hopping someone with the knowledge to give me some kind of definitive answer to this question will see this. Or at least have a thread with a good discussion on this subject. Thanks again!
It's the same thing.

my wizard won't boot
My wizard isn't going past the WM6 splash screeen, it gets stuck on it. I've tried soft and hard reseting a number of times as well as removing and reinserting the battery but nothing helps...
I recently flashed it with Blackdiamond 2.0 and have been using it without a single problem for the last 2 weeks or so.
Last thing I did on it last night was to use the 'Advanced Settings' in the settings menu and checked the options to make the scroll bars thinner and the scroll buttons smaller, it asked for a soft reset but since I was using it at the moment I clicked no and continued using it eventually powering it off and went to bed.
Now when I turned it on this morning it just won't go beyond the blackdiamond splash screen (pic attached)
I can't flash the rom again since activesync can't establish a connection with it(doesn't recognize that its attached with the pc, probably because the ROM never loads). I really don't know what to do... any help would be greatly appreciated
thanx
Check XDA-Wiki (top of this page) for troubleshooting guide under Wizard section
I'm not sure what is wrong with it, but it started because...I was trying to turn the bluetooth on and it wouldn't let me, so I did a soft reset, and what happens is it will just go to the loading screen for windows and stay there forever! I don't understand what happened . I've tried to reset a couple more times but it won't work...and also the power button on top doesn't work anymore.
Can anyone help me?
problem solved thanks
I just can't understand why people find more comfort in asking a question than doing a simple search and find the answer by himself. It's less time consuming and you feel a bit proud that you solved your problem on your own.
I think we should make a sticky with things like this :
"My wizard won't boot !"
"Which is the best rom ?"
"Will WM6 work on my device ? and where to find it ?"
All questions above have been asked hundreds of times, perhaps more and are still asked by almost every new guy that just registered.
how did you resolve your problem? I don't see troubleshooting anywhere...unless I"m very blind or maybe dumb.

You got 2 choices :
- flash a new rom (put it into bootloader and connect it to the PC then flash)
- hard reset

Hi,
I've a big big problem with my HTC Advantage.
Yesterday the unit worked perfect until it switched off because of the empty battery. Then I charged it overnight.
Today in the mornig my log in passwort didn´t work anymore.
I never changed the password "0103" since 1,5 years.
What can I do now to get on my hdd? I´ve got a "actually" backup on the MiniSD-Card. But it's not possible to get on it.
Even the Hardware-Reset (Volume down holding Reset) doesn't work. I get on the "reset-screen" but the Action-Key doesn't work. Only the Camera (abort) is working.
It's absolutely true, the password changed it self.
Have you got any ideas? HTC says that in repair all datas will be lost!
Best regards from Austria and many many thanks for helping.
I can only say that I have also had the same experience.
For me the battery never ran out of juice but one morning the Advantage just would not accept my 4-digit "password".
I finally had to give up, for after a number of tries the time between each time one can try a new password becomes VERY long (and I also KNOW the password I used so what was the point...). Soft Resets did not help
So I ended up with a hard reset...
And I no longer use a password...

I would call HTC and see if their's a default password they might have to get you back into the unit. I know it's a long shot but give it a try bud.
Did you do the hardware reset in the recommended way?
Volume down and pressing Reset at the same time.
Then press the Action Key in the middle (Key with the 4-directions).
I can't do a hardware reset because the button "is not working" or is locked because of the password.
I called HTC today and talked with a competent support engineer. There is no default key to unlock the password. It should be a Windows-Problem.
The only way is to send the unit to HTC - all data will be lost!
Best regards
it can change if you change your IMEI. otherwise no idea why.
For me it worked performing a standard 'hard reset' - volume slider down and 'reset'.
Sadly it seems that no one has got any other solutions...
change rom and restor you back up
go to bootloader mode, dont remember how but the info is somewhere in the forum. Then change rom, you can get the default rom off google if you search, so you actually uprading the same rom again into you existing rom. Then restore your backup. That's should do. i had the same problem and using standard volume slider down and pressing reset button worked for me. Hope that helps.

heh, task 28 command in mtty is guaranteed to hard reset it if the button press is no good. but maybe it has some hw fault if the buttons don't work..
Solution
This is the only way to solve this issue. Yes its a BUG.
The Password is no longer stored correcly when you loose your battery.

this link describes how to hard reset a blueangel. not athena.
"task 28" works though, but you do not need "task 0".
"task 28" basically does a plain hard reset, though. you only need to use it if volume+reset doesn't work (which is usually a HW button issue)
This just happened to me on my Touch...
but I ABSOLUTELY need the data on my touch. What to do?
Same Issue - MDA Vario II - PDAViet WM 6.1
Did anyone come, by any chance, up with a solution how to avoid the looming hard-reset?
Happened yesterday - password changed on its own.... Couldn't believe it!!
Still no fix?
I just got back from vacation yesterday. The phone worked fine until this morning. Somehow the password changed and I cannot get in. This sucks! I will lose all of my vacation photos (on internal memory) if I do a hard reset. The good news: I did a back up prior to going on vacation, so I won't lose everything. I, however, really hate to lose two weeks of photos. Any new suggestions on how to retrieve my data?
Sorry dude,
Hv to tell u that I was unable to find one when I was desperately looking for one some time ago. Best of luck anyways, and let us know in case you're successful.
Josh
Thanks for your um, empathy. I did a hard reset, but skipped the flash drive reformat. This reset the main memory to factory settings, but did not delete any of the files on the flash disk. I saved all of my photos, spreadsheets, and other data from the vacation. I restored the August 13th backup, but only the main memory files and lost very little.
This was a scary experience for two reasons: 1) I almost lost a ton of data, 2) I got it all back without needing a password. I thought that data on the flash disk was secure, but I was soooo wrong. All 16Gb are as secure as what is on the MicroSD card. If someone stole my device and performed the same operation they would have had lots of embarrassing photos of me at a bacchelor party and wearing a Spedo (or less) on the beach. I guess this is something I need to keep in mind in the future. I don't need these photos popping up when I run for president.
Ok first of all a big hi to this great community (xda team) and users.
Im new to this stuff but im in need for a little help, and i hope someone is willing to help me.
I have HTC Touch and im having problems with it. Its broken now it doesn't work. Not to forget to mention the phone i own is chinese made, which means i think is not the original one (even it looks and acts like the real one).
After modifying some phone applications, by installing tweaks and applications i found on internet, i installed some modified Keypad application, and after using it a while, one day it stopped responding and instead of showing Number keys, it only showed black buttons. SO i tried to uninstall it and after successful uninstall i restarted the phone but it showed me the screen aligning thing and i did what was required it booted but was not working properly. so i did several reboots, and then even tried reseting it. after several tries im now stuck on screen error.
I uploaded two videos on youtube how the screen gets mixed and the other problem, hard reset won't work on my device.
Links to videos:
video 1:

video 2:

i would be very happy if anyone could tell me what to do with my device.
PS. Im newbie so i might need some simple instructions if possible.
Thanks in advance.
No one cant help???
I hope someone is willing to give me some instructions...please!!!
Best regards. Gjizaqin
Very strange.
I havent seen any so unhelpfull forum like this :-( im really sad.
I posted the thread asked for help, explained the thing in the best way i could, and no single reply even the one "we can't help" would be nice to see.
Update to my post:
Im writing this with idea of helping others and pointing people to right direction. After maby 1 month of hard exploring i repaired my htc touch (chinese clone)
The phone im using is also known as Elf0100.
So how i fixed the problem:
After trying many many times the standard Hard reset method (Send, stop keys pressed and presing soft reset button with stylus) this method doesn't work with chinese htc clones. So anyone out there having Chinese Htc clone, the right method for doing Hard Reset is: Hold Volume Up & Camera Key pressed, and press Reset button for about 3 seconds without releasing Volume up and camera buttons. After that you should get blue screen, and in the top screen will be shown "Boot loading, hard reset, or something like that im not very sure".
Anyways if you have your Windows mobile damaged (like the one i had), you can repair it with the following method:
1. Download the manufactured version of Windows (or maby this is called ROM) from this site.
2. Format your HTC memory card (Micro SD card), so it will be clean.
3. Move the update.img (you already downloaded from the site) to root directory of your Memory card.
4. Press Volume Up button on your htc and while keeping it pressed , press the reset button.
You should get the blue screen telling the update being downloaded. Wait for a while and it will tell that Update is successfull and your phone will be rebooted.
THis is it.
Although i didnt get any help from this forum, i know i might help others cause this is most frequent place regarding PPC.
Best regards to all.

Hi gjizaqin,
I feel sorry you lost valuable time looking for an answer to your problem (and found it alone !) but I think you are too hasty to blame this forum. I am myself quite new here and I've already learnt so much using the "search". For instance I found another remark of yours in another thread and also found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2466074#post2466074 where you have your answer
Another reason is the title of your thread Help needed , HTC Touch screen error! like me probably others understood you have a technical problem with your screen (broken or damaged) and nobody could help you but repair shop...
I trust you'll continue contributing here because your last post proves you're a gentleman.

Thanks for your reply tito12,
Anyways its nice forum but not very newbie frendly. I guess the way I wrote this thing will be much easier for any newbie to fix his china htc, without talking too much about roms, loaders etc etc, wich is very confusing for newbies (like me and others).
I thought it was screen problem cause my htc was getting some messy colors while loading (you can see it in the video i provided). And i stated "unhellpfull forum" by keeping in mind that more than 200 people viewed the thread, and not even single one said simply : "i have no idea, or sorry" so i know someone will try to help me out.
Anyways as a owner of HTC I will still contribute to this forum, in the way I can but words I wrote could be some kind of newbie impressions.
Best regards to all.
Sorry to see no one could help you out - maybe its because its a clone and most users here have real genuine ones? Anyway its great to see you got it fixed and stick with the forums as I am sure you will learn a lot from them and soemtimes get an answer. I find that hardware questions dont get many responses but if you go into say a skinning forum you will get more replies.
Last night i took a photo then attempted to send it to a friend (MMS) - surprise surprise the phone made no effort to send it and it sat in the Outbox. I deleted the message and re-created it then attempted to re-send... again... didn't even try to send it.
So i created the message again... but this time, it couldn't find any of my photos... which I thought was odd... so i try to load Resco File Explorer - and it complains that it can't find the program (installed to SD card).
So it seems that magically I have no SD card any more (fwiw: i'm using a 16GB Sandisk one).
So, thinking the phone is just spazzing out, i reboot it.... and now it won't even f***ing recognise my password!
I'm being pretty patient with this phone as i've loved it up until recently... but if i'm honest - i'm starting to grow weary of it now!
If anyone has any thoughts on what might have caused the above - i'd appreciate it!
Thanks
Don't know what has caused it but, if you have your data backed up, I would go for a hard reset and take it from there.
Incidentally what version ROM are you running?
WB
I'm using the stock UK T-Mobile 1.43 ROM
UPDATE: I've left the battery out for an hour or so and also performed several soft resets........ and now, the "unlock" button does nothing! No confirmation of a wrong password... just........ nothing!
So ****ing pissed off!
Pooper,
You say you have done several soft resets. Have you tried the hard reset I suggested earlier (different procedure to soft reset)?
If you try that and it doesn't work then take the easy way out and return/exchange the device as faulty.
Alternatively, if you get it up and running and are not precious about the T-Mobile rom, then flash to another rom (the stock 1.48 is a good start) and take it from there.
Just in case you do have a dodgy device I would start by returning it if the hard reset does not work.
Keep us posted on how you get on.
Cheers
WB

Sometimes hard resets do resolve strange issues. Soft reseting is a way of life in the winmobile world.
The dilemma people have at the moment is that because there are so many reports of issues and variable manufacturing quality in these devices and they are all under warranty, it makes sense to play safe and send the device back if all sensible and warranty friendly measures to resolve problems have failed.
Must admit I would be really cheesed off if I happened to have a faulty device on my hands, due to manufacturing errors, which the manufacturer would not accept back because I had tried solutions to resolve problems that they considered not to be warranty friendly. Definitely would not be happy after having spent £500 on a device.
Regrettably, therefore, this is why the most common recommendation at the moment is to send a device back. Not good but sensible and pragmatic.

a hard reset is kind of the mobile equivalent to restarting your pc, and we all know that is the first thing any tech support guy says. as for the quality control, don't forget that for everyone with a problem there are a few dozen people with no problems at all, they just don't start threads saying "no problem with camera, help not needed"

Not really.... a SOFT reset is like restarting you PC (i.e. your programmes, settings, personal saves etc. are all preserved); a HARD reset is more like reformatting your computer that has an ability to self install Windows when the format is done... (i.e. you lose all personal files etc.).
A hard reset is far more taxing than a soft one. Last option for me everytime!

Hi! Indeed, I couldn't agree more with you. I have bought my HD2 two weeks ago (as well as my brother and my dad about a month ago) and none of us has a any problems whatsoever and actually this is my first post after I have bought the device.
I am reading this forum everyday and I contribute wherever I can to help people out (not so much here, so forgive me ).
I have came to the conclusion that either the branded units are of lower quality than the unbranded ones ( a bit unlikely) or the branded ones are full of software bugs by not so good operators tweaking (most likely)...
cheers
Hehe, i knew i'd wake up to howls of anger and derision re: my hard reset comment.
The actualities of the process aside, the comparison I was trying to make was that if you have a problem on your PC, sometimes logging off and back on will fix it, whilst other times a reboot is required. (Yes, I know, a reboot is usualy the first stop because it only takes a minute or so, and there's no resetting to do, but bear with me)
In many circumstances I would equate a soft reset to logging off, in that it doesn't always solve a problem. Sure, it solves many small problems, but for larger probs theres nothing like a hard reset and start over. Planned ahead, and assuming you have all the apps you regularly use in a handy spot, and your data backed up, a hard reset need only take 10-20 minutes, if that.
Suppose it serves me right for trying to mix up similies at 3am.
Your problem sending MMS's is probably to do with winmo getting the settings for T-Mobile slightly wrong.
Go to start->settings->menu->all settings->connections->connections->manage existing connections
edit the active connection and untick the box where it uses a proxy.
This is common to all winmo devices that automatically setup connections for T-Mobile.
Hui all xda-developers.
I'm a knew member in here, so I will first say hi to all members .
As my title says, i cannot Hard-reset my phone (HTC HD2/LEO).
The hole thing is a big story, but what the hack
First I brooked my screen, then I tried to change the screen, but without problems. Then after to month, I did make an Password for my phone, because of privacy thing on the phone. BTW, the phone changed the password itself .
I talked with HTC, and they says that it is a bug in the phone, and the only way was a hard-reset, (But when i clanged the screen, i did broke the volume up and down button ) - then they gave me a price if they should make my phone 4000 Danish krone's ........ I will not give 4000 DK, I have All ready paid about 5-6000 Danish krone's for the phone!..
Is there someone in this forum that can help me? I all ready have searched Google and so on, talked with so many people, but all the time they say 'Hard-reset' ..
I seriously don't no what I have to do, maybe it is possible by USB cable :S
So your main problem is that the phone changed the password and not you cant hard reset right ?
This happens a lot even there is a thread about it somewhere. Try to remove the sim card and the sd-card then enter your pin code.
Or if that didn't work you can try to flash an official ROM for your device via USB, But since you broke the vol rockers and your phone is locked I'm not exactly sure how you'd go into bootloader nor connect in ActiveSync mode. Give it a try, it may work
Welcome to xda!
I think that the HD2 section must be overwhelming for a starter... and the search function can deliver confusing results.
However, as the phone has already some major on-market time, most problems you might face have been discussed sometime in the past, that is why I do recommend you to use the search function with simple search terms.
Now, about your question:
Please check this thread: Klick!
The tip nr. 15 describes how to reset your phone - and the rest of the thread describes many other more or less unknown features and functions of your phone.

He already knows how to hard reset
But his vol's are broken, that's why he's asking
Mate if you broke the screen and the volume key buttons then why on earth are you trying to reset the phone?
Fix the hardware first and then deal with a hard reset. If both those items are broken then there really is no way to hard reset the HD2. I wish you the best of luck but it looks like your HD2 is really dead...

I'm trying to reset my phone, because i cannot find those hardware\main board for the phone on the Internet? (Those wires in the phone, that goes to the volume up and down)
If you can recover an Nokia (something) without an hard reset, then why can we not do it on an HD2 ? Do you no what i mean >?
^^^ Yeah, my bad. Missed the whole point that the hardware is completely broken. And a password issue.
Anyway...
