I noticed a dim red light in the trackpad when booting. It goes away quickly though. I am on CM7 if that matters. Just wondering if others have noticed it. Thinking it may be part of the movement detection sensor.
Also, did they remove the battery percentage display in the battery icon in CM7? I can not find it in the options any more.
The red light is normal. It's how the trackpad works. I think it's Infrared-based.

Thats what I was thinking. Its the IR LED kicking on to max output before the kernel starts regulating power to it.
It would be sweet if there were options to leave it on while the screen is on
my first impression when i saw this when turning my phone on in the dark was it was taking a picture of me in infrared night shot mode to send to Google servers...
At least it isn't followed by a "warning, this device will self destruct in 10 seconds."
It is a infared sensor. So its there Any way to use this as a universal remote at all?

I tried looking in the forum for any info on the status LED next to the speaker on the front side but I don't see any posts on this. Is this LED supposed to flash or do something? On my HD it has never worked? Is it supposed to work?
I remember on my Artemis it would flash green for good reception, blue for bluetooth and red if the battery was low.

I may be wrong but i was under the impresion that this was a sensor rather than a LED.
No, that's entirely correct, it is the light sensor. The LED is in the power button.
the status led is on the power button on the top right hand side of the blackstone...the place u highlighted is a sensor as what scotia has point out..
I think that it is a proximity sensor used to blank screen when you put the phone on your ear to talk.
It's actually the light sensor used for when you have automatic display brightness enabled. When it's dark, it turns down the brightness... And when it's a sunny day it cracks it up. I am not sure whether it's used to blank the screen during a call... This seems to happen after a period of time has elapsed.

ok thanks for the info.
So does the power LED on the top side flash any color to show the status of the reception or does it only light up orange when it charges?
Thanks.
doesn't do anything for reception..although mine flashes green hen I have a message/email/reminder
pity though, a decent LED to show such things was probably high on everyone's wishlist
No, the HD is perfectly unobtrusive. On my last PDA the LED had to be tweaked to stop flashing.
Too bad this isnt a LED diode Since I got on my Diamond a light notification (on the bottom of device)... when I recieved new sms... now on HD there is no way I can figure do I have new sms or notification unless I turn the screen on. The only hardware flaw by mine opinion
When its lying down, I agree with you. Then I have to turn on the screen. However when its lying next to me I'm usually not in a place were I can't use my phone, so the sound is on anyway.
I actually think its quite good the LED is on the top, it's easelly visible when the phone is in my pocket. I just have to pull the phone up a little and look down to see the LED (no need to get it out and turn the screen on). I like it on the top, nice and discreet, and not anoying me when I'm looking at the device while using it.
Perhaps a combination would be nice? Front and top That would sattisfy most people I guess...
ok i was wondering... why is there two LEDs on HTC maple and only one is being used
I noticed that too. There's got to be an app that allows you to customize how they blink. I used an old one for HTC phones but is not compatible.
I'm pretty sure the "light" on the right side of the phone is the sensor that automatically dims the backlight if you have the option turned on. I don't think it's an LED at all.
I think that there is only one LED diode exactly on the left side on the right side is a light sensor.

I didn't see anything about the second LED from that link. So does this mean the other LED will not blink?
It's not an LED.

The left side is a bi-colour LED with (maybe tri-colour) but so far I have only seen green and orange. Red maybe the third colour. Unlike the HTC Hermes 200 (Tytn) that had a second LED that was flashed blue when the bluetooth was active, the HTC Maple does not seem to have it. The right lens is actually a light sensor for the keyboard backlight *IF* you wish to use that feature which quite frankly SUCKS as I can't see anything most of the time because it doesn't switch on the backlight when you really need it.
I would prefer if it actually controls screen brightness. I wonder if there's a patch for that?

Doubtful as it only seems to be a on or off command and not a on at level command. I just wish that it would be adjustable for light level setting as it never comes on in low light conditions when it should unless you cover it with a finger.
The lights for the Home, Menu, back arrow, and search key only come on 40% of the time. Does anyone have information on how to fix this?
I assume its a hardware problem, I wish I had the option to turn mine off.
They only turn on in low light settings. Cover the light sensor and they will come on. There was a glitch so they didn't turn on when charging, but I think it was fixed (?).
The lights are tied to the ambient light sensor. They only come on when you are in a darkened room. Also, they don't come on when the phone is charging (at leasrt mine don't).

Just download the app "LEDs OFF" from the marketplace. It's quite useful and I use it just about every night when the lights are low and I want the device as dim as possible. If you have a problem with the lights flickering, you need to download the latest version of SuperUser... This is of course assuming your on a rooted device. Anyways, just thought I would throw my 2 cents in
My lights don't come on all the time either... Pretty sure its supposed to be that way... They always come on right after un lock and go off about 15 seconds later
Sent from the MATRIX... while plugged into my EVO... using the XDA app... from a galaxy far-far away.......
If you are charging the button lights generally don't come on.

Do you mean "LEDs Hack"? That's what I'm using and it works great when reading ebooks in bed.
I noticed the lights don't always come on on mine and I always wondered why this was.
Now that I think of it I suppose it's only when I'm charging, but it's quite annoying when you're used to hitting the glowing menu or back button!
Anyone actually have the led in the trackball go off? i think ive seen it once the first time i turned on the phone and that was the last time ive ever seen it go off
Unless I missed something, that is not a feature of the phone. We do have the LED notification light next to the speaker, though.
yea i know we have the led at the top but i could of sworn saw something bout a led under the track was prob my faulty mind tho lol
Maybe thinking of the Nexus One?

MyTouch 3G has a lit up trackball, iirc.
would be interesting to see an LED in there, but I imagine it might interfere with the optical sensor's ability... or it could enhance it a la Blutrak.
What you see when your device boots up is the optical laser turning on. Like you optical mouse but the phone has a red tinted cover over it. Its brighter on power up due to the controller program not being open yett.

There is a red light in the trackpad. turn screen off and on and look closely
yea its like an O P T I C A L MOUSE....
lmao ^^ i wonder if there is a way to make it light up for notification.
What I really want to know is how to keep the notification light on until a message is checked.

I have tried the following but no success so far.
Mobile light
Switch widget pro light widget toggle
Simple light (which claims to be compatible.with galaxy tab)
Led light
A few others that I have since removed.

Use tiny flashlight + led, in the app itself(not working in widget), once the light is on, press on the onscreen button again while the light is still on to keep it on, press that button again to off it.
Meaning, press once to turn it on, press it again while the light is on to keep it on, press 3rd time to turn it off. It's obviously a bug, but great workaround for our overprotective tab
WARNING: Extensive use might damage the hardware as it does create heat.
Thanks,
it doesn't seem to work but i have a suspicion that it may be to do with the Kernel that i am currently on ([OC1.2&1.4GHz][KernelPatch])
might jump back over to modaco's and see what results i get
Yeah I once used LED Light by picolyl , its in market . It worked nice on my JMEv2

Cheers, ive got both the Flash Light apps now and i have just installed the modaco Kernel to see if it resolves my light light issue.
Seems to be working "better" (i.e. the flash light does come on now) but my light goes on and off while using these programs
I wonder if its an issue compatibility issue then. as i am also running overcome rom 1.1.3 + modaco kernel similar to your setup.

Do as I said previously, and u will have light keeps on instead of couple sec off, remember, when the light is on, press the button again!! Not working in widget mode, please follow instructions to the word before saying it's not working.
Have a look at 'Flashlight' in the market too. Does the LED light, but also has some fun options for the screen. Red/blue flashing lights, Amber warning lights, etc. Works fine on my Tab.

just for the sake of warning tho, 1 thing I noticed is that the light density is a bit different from still photo flash vs video light
