Hi. I wish to start development, but I need a cheap phone toactually start with. The Comet from prepaid t-mobile seems very promising. Will I be able to develop on this device? Are there USB drivers for it? If so, where may I obtain these said drivers?
I would like to know quickly. Thanks.
BUMP. BUMP.

It means to put this thread back at the top of the list because no one has responded. I too am curious about the Comet, just got a free one given to me by TMO cancellation department and it really blows. Needs some dev love bad.

I'm in a mobile development program at school (College) and I've finished my iPhone portion, purchased my developers license, and now we've started Android development.
My sister-in-law gave me her T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (she just upgraded) and I'm trying to get this sucker so I can develop on it. I've had it for a couple days and just had time today to mess with it. I purchased some DUMMY SIMs from a Hong Kong site and I'm trying to get the phone to just let me add apps.
I "seriously" just want to use this device (versus the CRAPPY Simulators) for my development classes, but I can't seem to figure this out.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
#1 unlock inside
#2 universal androot the phone
#3 install a lite rom like CM series
#4 you might need to upgrade to an engineer kernel(might be adb). Check version on fastboot.
Stop by development forum for your questions.
What school is this you are taking? Google offer free development Program to school and offer large discount on developer phones also.

Sorry #4 I meant you might have a locked SPL. You may need to update it to engineer SPL. Search amom-ra post in development. He got all sorts of goodies.

It's at my local community college... got a free laptop and iPod touch 32gb out of it, so that's a HUGE plus. And as long as I make a C or better, I get to keep them. One more year...
I love the program. But I'm halfway into the Android Development side now and the SIMULATOR is HORRENDOUS! Takes forever to load, glitchy at best... I just wanna get this MyTouch running enough to work on some apps. Ughers...
OH! And thanks for the tips... I'll be digging around. PEACE!
Friends, have already heard the complaints about Lags, Music crackling, and bad battery (mainly the screen is responsible).
Besides this I would like to know the following:
- How is the 5MP Camera with dual-LED flash?
Comparable or better than that of HTC Desire or Galaxy S
- The physical QWERTY - Is it fun and really fast to type with it? How's the adjustment to tap the screen to send the message after typing. (normally a scrollball or touch pad would do the job faster).
- 3D gaming - How's it the 3D performance, do all the Android High-End games run smoothly.
-The new email system or software implemented - Does it support Inline message editing of forwarded Emails?
- Can you do a T9 contact search directly from the Desktop? Is there a T9 dialer?
How is the 5MP Camera with dual-LED flash? - just fine
Comparable or better than that of HTC Desire or Galaxy S - not even a valid comparison
- The physical QWERTY - Is it fun and really fast to type with it? How's the adjustment to tap the screen to send the message after typing. (normally a scrollball or touch pad would do the job faster). Awesome keyboard, how is pressing something quicker than touching something?
- 3D gaming - How's it the 3D performance, do all the Android High-End games run smoothly. don't know
-The new email system or software implemented - Does it support Inline message editing of forwarded Emails? - nope
- Can you do a T9 contact search directly from the Desktop? Is there a T9 dialer? no, and yes.
I hated the on screen keyboard of my HTC Desire. What ever HTC did to the keyboard it seems like its even harder to type than with the stock keyboard.
Not making a mistake every sentence is wonderful.
Hi guys,
I'm seriously considering buying this phone. So I thought I could just add up to this post rather than start a new thread asking questions about the features.
I didn happen to notice this thread and sent the same given below as a PM to Jibriel
So let me outline my buying rationale I want a blackberry-ish phone which I can use without a blackberry rate data plans in India. I want this phone to do primarily one thing, sync gtalk and gmail / facebook perfectly. I can take a hit on other functions but not this. I am a noob so one or 2 of my questions will be pretty dumb.
1. Where to buy the phone?
I'm in India. So will it suffice if I buy the phone from amazon wireless with the replacement phone option
wireless.amazon.com/dp/B004AM5AWM (i cannot post links as this is my first post so not providing it as a hyperlink).
Is there any better option available. I know people traveling to and from the US, so shipping within continental US option will do and I dont need a world shipping option.
2. How do I unlock?
So apparently from other posts I see a guy can provide a 8 numerical unlock code to unlock the phone for other GSM carries. So if I buy the phone using option 1, will the same $8 trick work for me.
3. Now for dumb question, I want to know if Gtalk is running in background and if someone sends me an IM then will I be notified of the IM automatically? Or should I refresh the app manually to get latest updates? Same thing for facebook.
I have long commute to work. So this answer will be major influencing factor on my buying decision.
4. How is the call quality? I have some hearing difficulties. But its not bad enough to use a hearing aid. I have heard some issue with call qualities being poor. Is anyone using an unlocked phone with GSM carries experienced any issues? Bad lemons are ones luck, just trying to determine if issue is widespread.
I know my list is long. But I dont want to spend $449 just because I would really like to own it. Any inputs/feedback on the above questions will be greatly appreciated.

// Buy it from Amazon, eBay or anywhere else your gonna get the same phone. Some of the sites are selling it unlocked and some really cheap. I got mine for $611 and happen to see a a few sites selling for less, so do your research carefully.

// Yes the SwiftUnlock guy will give you the code for $8 and he delivers really fast. After that the process of setting up your phone is fairly simple.

// Android has evolved significantly and most messaging apps support Push notification. If you aren't aware Facebook now supports Chat & Push notification. GTalk will do the same, but I have removed it as it runs as a service hence draining battery and consuming RAM - I suggest using Fring instead.
4. How is the call quality? I have some hearing difficulties. But its not bad enough to use a hearing aid. I have heard some issue with call qualities being poor. // Phone, speaker and speaker phone clarity is far supperior than Blackberry and even the Galaxy S. The camera is also just right for your daily photo shots. Flash is nice and bright. The phone overall is just right out of the box (except the bloatware) which can be removed via Titanium backup. Cell reception and surfing on GPRS is very fast. The touchscreen is very responsive and multi-touch can be compared to that of an iPhone.
The scrolling of web paged is smooth as silk and apps operate really fast.
ITS A MUST BUY COMPARED TO BLACKBERRY?
I know my list is long. But I dont want to spend $449 just because I would really like to own it. Any inputs/feedback on the above questions will be greatly appreciated.

Just one more question. Will the unlock procedure used void warranty? and does motorola offer international warranty for Droid Pro?
I'm not talking about rooting. But just unlocking it to work with GSM carriers in India.

No it doesn't void the Warranty. Besides where are you going to find the support for Verizon phones in India. If something goes wrong, Motorola India is not going to provide any support since the phone isn't officially available here and neither do they have the hardware to support it.
....Unless you have means to send it back to the US.
i know a few ppl who will be travelling to n fro for the next couple of months. So worst case some1 can take it back and return it. So thats why I prefer to buy from amazon if its few $$ more expensive than ebay and other stuff.
but yah i got all the info i to convince me to blow $449
i will get the handset only in 2nd week of jan then i will strt a new thread for the set up procedures
Dude. You can win one on ebay for much less than 450. I saw ended auctions from sellers with very good feedback starting from 375 $$.

Make sure to also read about the reboot issue, it seems to be very very common. It's like every other Droid Pro owner has it.

Just wondering if there were any other developers willing to work on the A7 or (more preferably) the A7+. Dexter seems to have quit or lost interest his development permanently on either devices (I think he doesn't have a physical device to work with anymore, but I don't remember where I heard this). The last time he logged on to Tablet Roms was on "04-27-2012", and the last time he logged on to XDA was, well, today actually but he doesn't seem to have any interest in the eLocity forum section. He DID leave us with quite a lot of quality ROMs to work with, especially since the kernel was released for the + in March.
If there aren't any developers willing to work with the A7/A7+ because they don't have a physical device, I would willingly offer remote testing on my A7+ (AKA they give me the compiled ROM(s) or whatever and I try it out and give feedback). It just seems like such a shame to leave both devices with nothing better than a buggy (but still awesome) Honeycomb or a working stock 2.2. ICS seems like it would be doable, again especially since the kernel was released.
I will try to contact the user "chinabull" in the referred link as he seemed like he knew what he was doing when he said "It seems to have all the driver source code we need."
And I have also posted this over at TR.
EDIT- Turns out I can't send PM's to chinabull here, forgot about that. I'll find some other means of communication.
EDIT2- I'm crazy- the message got through; chinabull messaged back! And... he said that he already returned his A7+. So we've got no leads there.
If anyone knows some devs who haven't even heard of the A7/A7+ but might be willing to pick up where Dexter left off, please contact them or let me know so that I can contact them.

I would be willing to pony up CDN $20 towards the purchase of one for a talented (and dedicated) dev to work with. Here in Canada they are available as refurbs for about $90 from places like factorydirect dot c a ..
Anyone else want to donate some dinero ?
Cheers
Sorry for the late(ish) reply, I was out of town.
I don't have any money to donate, sadly, as I just spent it on the A7+...
But, like I said in the OP, if you are willing to work from afar we could do that.
It's a shame it's dead. Prices are around $90 in the US too. With all the china pads out there getting 2nd tier dual core processors with 600 res screens for very little more, it's easy to see why this would go by the wayside. One plus would be built in bluetooth which no china pad has at anything close to this pricepoint, and it probably has a better battery than many of them as well.
We've got someone over at Tablet Roms who will be working on the A7+! He is just waiting on the tablet to arrive.

I'd donate if you're talking about developing for the (older) A7. I still use mine and it would be nice to see a fresh rom for it.
I'd be in if I didn't just pick up the ZTE Optik from Sprint. Can't beat free and can't beat running JB via CM10. That 800 res is quite nice.
I'd greatly appreciate someone picking up work on the A7+. I still haven't flashed the newer firmware with the blank screen from sleep fix because I was holding out hope for a new custom rom. I'd have to root and install the outdated gapps again... And I'm sure we don't have unreasonably high expectations. I'd just like a rom without those awful elocity apps, doesn't black screen when I wake it, with google play, and with functioning hardware, anything more is welcome but uneccessary.
Ok his name is jam4 over at TR - check the thread for updates http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/elocity-a7-general-discussion/5362-any-other-devs-a7-a7.html
@dibmem jam4 is developing on the +, sorry
@frankwg83 yes he is working on honeycomb at the moment, but it sounds like your problems would be easily fixed... it takes 5 minutes and a flashdrive to install the Play Store and a root explorer and a 1-click-root app to get rid of the bloatware

Think he would develop on the A7 if he had the hardware? I'm the type of person who'd buy one second hand just to donate it to a willing and capable dev.

Maybe, I don't know. You'd have to ask him yourself - http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/members/jam4.html
"I am about 2 weeks out from releasing a working Honeycomb build for the A7+. Let me know how many of you are interested, either by pm or an email to [email protected]"
Everyone go PM or Email him!
So...2 weeks out? How'd that go?
Btw, the A7+ is at 1saleaday again for $70 this time. I'm willing to buy one and ship it to a developer if that's a hurdle since I'm pretty sure there are enough people out there that would want a solid Honeycomb or even Gingerbread firmware. I don't have the time/obsession to figure out the coding myself.
Forgive me if this is in the wrong place. Since I can only presume after WiMM was purchased it was used as a development platform for wear, wouldn't I be able to use aWear with the WiMM ? It's a large presumption, but I emailed the company and they have not responded. Would be a nice touch to be able to use this, even if the processor is a bit under par as the company just kinda slammed the doors on owners and left little in terms of functionality on the table. Anyone have any news on this? I managed to scrounge up the drivers and anything I could dig up on the old packages for the unit. Thanks in advance.

An official port would surprise me greatly. It's possible that an unofficial version may made but the likelyhood of that depends on the fans of the device. Relatively few people have the WIMM One which means the chances of a strong developer or team of developers even having devices to build/debug on may be pretty low.
The other issue would be the specs. The CPU and RAM as well as the lack of Bluetooth LE and the lower resolution screen will likely be real challenges to overcome. The WIMM One currently runs a version of Android 2.1 so it wasn't built with kernel support for many of the features that Wear requires.

Thank you for the reply and thorough explanation.
well as long as someone made a port im willing to put my wimm up for testing. im really pissed at wimm labs for leaving us for dead when they got bought out.
my wimm is essentially a brick right now because it cant sync or be setup on the wimm website
I agree

They should have sent us all Moto 360s. Just crap because they sold the wimm one as a developer platform then
pulled the sdk and the store.
Hi guys. So I'm considering buying a Wileyfox Storm because of the price/value ratio.
There's not much information that can be found about the phone regarding it's OTG support on the internet. Some comparison sites imply NOT, and other sites have something cryptic like USB OTG (TBC). LIKE WHAT?! For that matter, there's not that much info and support for the device at all, nevermind any nongeneric cases or covers.
Anyway since I couldn't find a definite answer, I wanted to ask the actual owners of the Storm if their device supports OTG if they've ever tried it. And if you haven't ever tried testing it, would you mind doing so?
Thanks guys!
I installed USB OTG Checker which showed my Storm has the USB OTG API. However I can't test for USB OTG Kernel or Driver Signal as I don't have a USB OTG cable or adapter at the moment. Hoping to borrow one or buy one in the next few days. Will let you know the outcome.
Regards.
Brian
I received my £0.99 OTG USB adaptor in the post from an eBay seller today and it works. With ES File Explorer or Solid Explorer it shows the contents of my memory stick and I can read text files, etc.
So the answer to your question is yes the Storm does support OTG.

Hi Brian,
That's fantastic! I really can't thank you enough for taking the effort of experimenting the OTG feature on the Storm :good:.
If you don't mind I'd also like to know your thoughts on the device and if you'd recommend it. From what I've understood is that the battery is probably the biggest disadvantage in the phone, but how ''bad'' is it actually? How often do you have to charge your phone under a certain usage?
And also I don't know if you use it for gaming, but if you have done so, does it perform decently?
Thanks mate!

I've had my Storm since Christmas and I am generally pleased with it these days. The last OTA update made a big difference to the reliable operation of mine after a bit of a wobbly start but I have read that others have had a few hardware problems along the way. I don't know if it is still the case but I haven't seen any new complaints recently. If you are going to buy SIM free I would play safe and get one from somewhere like Amazon who have good returns policy if you do happen to get a "lemon".
My previous phone was a gen 1 Moto G running Cyanogenmod and battery life with my Storm is equally good but then I am a very light user and I can get about 2 days out of a full charge. However if I run Google Maps for my daily commute the battery goes down quite quickly which I suppose is due to that big display being on all the time but probably no worse than my Moto G was. The Storm is quite responsive but I've never used it for gaming so you wll have to ask others about this on this forum. The Cyanogen Mod forum is also worth reading through:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/forum/1212-wileyfox-storm-kipper/
I'm very pleased with mine for what I need it to do but like others are saying we do need a decent case for it.
Hope this helps.

That was pretty helpful thanks. I'm stuck in a dilemma now. It's either going to be the Storm or the OnePlus X (roughly the same price).
The OP X does rock the more powerful Snapdragon 801, however the bigger screen, front facing camera flash and 32 GB of internal storage on the Storm seem to be dragging me towards it immensely.
Also the OP X has loads of support and threads going for it while the Storm seems to be nearly dead on the internet.
Which would you honestly get if you were phoneless and had to choose one of the two?
It is early days for the Storm but Wileyfox the company seem to be more intent on pushing the brand and new sales rather than nurtering and building up a strong reputation. In theory Wileyfox being UK based should have the better customer service but many people haven't found this.
The OP X has as you say a strong following and seems a better phone than it's earlier models with a more straight forward means of purchasing it these days. I like Cyanogen having used it for many years on several mobiles but I don't know much about Oxygen OS on the OP X? OP phones have been on the market longer, hence have sold more phones and consequently there will be more information on the internet. I think they have had their share of hardware problems in the past but perhaps this is the risk you take with good value mobiles like these.
One of the things at the top of my list was what to do in the event of a hardware problem and I thought with a few retails here in the UK and Amazon stocking the Storm it might be a safer bet and I have read on here about people returning their phones to Amazon at least once. When I bought my Storm at Christmas I was also looking at the LG G3 (i think it was that one) which was on special offer but went for the Storm mainly from the reviews I'd read. Although I am perfectly happy with the Storm reading other posts on here makes me wonder at the longevity of the Storm but this is probably the case with the OP X too. Only time will tell.
I wouldn't want to advise on which one to choose but perhaps make a list comparing the things important to you and then follow your heart. At least that way if you are unfortunate enough to have problems you will know that you made the best decision at the time.
Good luck.
Brian
