Maybe this is far fetched or not..
But will the day ever come or is it even possible that we eventually have a way... perhaps through the recovery menu or just generally through the phone..
To be able to easily select any of the themes, roms... etc from a list of all of the themes, roms.. etc and then install while our phone keeps everything critical to a user saved...
Maybe I am wrong.. I am not much a help to this community.. the best I can give are ideas.
I was thinking a program called ... "XDA" for example that would allow us to install any of this stuff more easily... would be f'n sweet...
Perhaps there could be money from advertising revs or just flat out charge a buck or two as well..
I'm not really sure... thoughts? Is it possible or not?
Excuse my ridiculous way of communicating.
PS... I would love to have easier access to what you guys are doing here, and I know I'd be fully willing to pay for an app that allowed simple installation of work that has gone down here.
It's been such a long time since I rooted and put in a rom as well as other things, I slightly don't look forward to doing it again as well as don't really know what new features would be gained.
I know i've only really had trouble with one thing on my phone and its the damn youtube app... 90% of the time video/audio doesn't play.. but if I try 10x to load the video it does eventually work.
I don't even know what i'm using any more.. I think I have fresh.
Again excuse my writing/thinking style... (full blown lunatic) DEAL WITH IT.
for themes, at least, use metamorph. you could easily come up with that through a google search and maybe 5 or 10 minutes of looking around. though you probably are gonna be using 1.6 aosp for theming with metamorph. so that means no sense.
roms.... not gonna happen lol.
Well essentially recovery is what you are talking about...
I mean in regards to cutting out the work to be able to flash a rom, you can't do it. You are always going to need root access, and really the reason I assume we use recovery in the first place is that it is not running on the ROM/etc, its outside what we are trying to mod.
I mean say someone came up with a simple apk, released to market and etc for installing roms. How would you run the apk? You can't flash over the rom while still using it.
Plus I would say it is probably a good thing for people to approach the learning curve to modding the device. Flashing while not understanding what you are doing and stuff could potentially be risky. Imagine an app in the market and how many people would brick their phone from doing things they would have originally learned not to do.

id just like to see more custom roms and themes come out like the gsm version has.
What I think the OP is talking about, is something like Preware for the Palm Pre, where you can download whatever it is to be modified through Preware, and then Preware reboots the phone/Luna (windows manager) depending on what is being modified, and then the changes are done. But then again, Preware can't change ROM's, only skins, etc.
Hey all,
Have some extra time today and i'm thinking about rooting my hero...
I'm not as tech savvy as the crowd that runs in these circles, nor do I have the experience or knowledge to do anything except ask for help, which is why i'm apprehensive to begin with...like jumping into a pool without knowing how to swim.
I've been scanning this pool for about a week though and there seems to be some very cool things, primarily tethering and tweaks that can get a guy more than 4 hours of batt life.
Any comments out there fer a guy like me? Or am I just wasting your time and mine? Any of you suggest the best ROM for someone not looking for a hassle? How about tether?
BTW...I'm not a total leech, I would be willing to help with a donation if the **** works.
Thanks guys, many of you are incredible in this sandbox that you play in.
You should totally root; it gives you MAJOR speed improvements and such. Cyanogenmod 6 is also very nice and smooth . You get to really customize your hero, to the exact way you'd like it! If for some reason you don't like it, just RUU back (google it, hehe)
Hoped this helped you a bit!
Oh, edit:
CM6 has tethering built in.

Go for the root..then the fun really begins..
2.1 or 2.2...you will have to figure out what you want..
I went 2.2 and don't miss any of the sense stuff, but since I am rooted..I can always change back if I wanted to. Go take a look at all of the cool screen shots of what folks have been doing..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584379 That should ease you feet into the pool..it did mine..
Good Luck

Not everyone on here here is saavy. You'll get the hang of it. I was scared when I first rooted but now I wish I like have done it earlier.

I don't know much about root with the mytouch 4g Or any phone for that matter A
except that it is considered very very good However it may or may not want a warranty that is where I hear different issues
Could someone clarify the two things first what are the exact benefits I get out of it. would it take me back to what I had on my nexus --basic android. nd
Secondly would it void my warranty? If so is there a way of getting back to the original factory settings where they would not know?
Lastly there is no way I would be able to do this is there anyway of getting anyone else to do it in person or over the computer By giving me instructions I know there is a list of instructions but I was thinking more along the lines of seeing or speaking to someone
I would pay handsomely for this
Thank you and this was typed and sent using Dragon dictation so forgive me for any misspellings or punctuation I correct is almost all spelling and punctuation till the end

1 - Simply rooting the phone would not give you the same setup that you had on your Nexus One, but it would allow you to get there. By rooting the phone, you are getting complete access to every partition on that phone and THAT is what allows changes to be made to the kernel and operating systems (aka ROMs). Unless you are a developer and know how to create your own ROM, you'd have to wait until one is created for us. Right now I believe there is one called Ice or something to that extent. You can check the Development section for that.
2 - Rooting technically does void your warranty, however there are way to get back to the original stock ROM/settings. There are threads in the Development section as well. As with anything that is in unfamiliar territory, take care and precaution when modifying your phone...especially if you use it on a daily basis and aren't sure of the exact steps to take.
Hopefully this was somewhat useful. Good luck!
Allen, and everyone, thank you
Yes, it does help
You say I can wait for one, or do my own, or use one by ??Ice.
Is that the one that was on the net, namely one like this, created by Scotty also?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/11/11/root-mytouch-4g-install-custom-recovery/
1. Is that safe
2. Is the "flash" the thing that can get you back to factory settings
3. As far as the ? about getting anyone to take baby steps with you in doing this OR somewhere to take the phone to do it, has anyone heard of this.
Lastly, Allen
did you know anything about the phone locking up after a break, when using WiFi (EDIT: Oops thought I mentioned this in the post above. fwiw, anyone know why I can use wifi over the net quite well, using my browser (not to confuse using the wifi calling app, as one gent thought I meant. But then after a brief break, it locks up. even if I switch back to hspa. I have to restart. any ideas?)
Again, Thanks Allen, and all
If the only thing you know about rooting is "its very very good" then my suggestion would be to not do it just to do it.... do your research first, learn the basics and what its all about, yes there are pro's but theres con's. A simple mistake could leave you with a very expensive paper weight. All I'm saying is there's no need to jump in to it. root was around far before android and wont disappear over night. The only thing that I can't stress enough is research research research.

For a beginner developing your own rom would be extremely difficult/almost impossible... no other roms have been released yet except for the ice one but that is the exact same thing as what you have now minus the stock apps
One problem with using other peoples roms is if you can't read the code you really don't know what your putting on your phone... with XDA a decent amount of us can read code and would say something if we found it malicious but what if noone took the time on that specific rom? unless you can read it that just brings me back to you really never know
So I guess that answers your is it safe question... its safe if you know what your doing... and don't get me wrong I'm not tryin to make it sound scary it'll be a 1 in a million shot to find a malicious file on xda but it could happen
2 flash an equal to install ... as installing a rom flashing a rom
3 no idea what you mean

thanks. No, that just about answers it. very well, I might add. I will wait
what i meant, is if there is one that comes out, might there be someone who will walk you thru it, i.e for a newbie either thru chat, phone, or somewhere to take your phone to get it flashed with the new rom
oh ok i see, you would probably not want someone to do it for you because youll need to do it more than once... if someone walks you through it at least you learn how to do it and you'll be able to do it next time (and trust me theres always a next time) if your interested in doing it i pm'd you my aim name and id help you out with it... its really quite simply when its broken down... but like i said before id do some more research on it first and come up with some reason you personally need root access because its importance to other people may not mean anything to you n vice versa.
Im a epic lover...... dont mean to do any fights or anything like that...
we have been in so much drama ... and i know some ppl making threads because of no havin time to read!!!! (i did it once)... anyways my point is here!!
i just saw the evo thread and for some reason they have the 2.3 ginge.. working in the evo(not full but they are in the way_) is a dirty hack from sdk but still they got it to work
we have great devs here!! (noob... bubby323.. syndicate ... and some other just to name some!!.... btw to bad for noob that he left us...) i know they can make it work!! i know is hard and it takes alot time so lets just chillax a lil./.. right now im learing how to theme ... which isnt bad .... just need lil bit more time and i know is not the same as dev... but is something!!
so i think we have the power and the ppl to make this work and only giving the best to the ppl ... without the (spr. and sammy) bootloads lol!!... so please ppl..
lets get a positive work here ... and not fight!!!... and u guys can erase this thread or not!! just want us a a commmunity to get in that same track as other phone users!!!
thanks for u time !!!
The best way to bring christmas (android) cheer, is to sing loud for all to hear! Our dev's rock, and we will be there soon, cause once our final release is dropped and the source is released we will be on the same page as the Evo. No doubt about that.
The reason you aren't seeing anything for the Epic yet is that in like 8 days they are releasing a phone almost identical to ours with gingerbread. Once the source for that rom is released, it should be a lot easier to port. Still gonna be a TON of work though.

well dont get me wrong!! but if we havent get the froyo update...///and even tho sammy has work on the 2.3 (ginger...) for a few months... what makes u think we can port it ... i bellieved nexus s is not a cmda phone that make alot diff. to port it... even tho they might or do have same hardwares!!
I don't know how many people here has actually used Roms built from an SDK but there is a ton of stuff missing always that can't just be fabricated out of thin air. Sometimes though a decent rom can be made out of an SDK and a dump from another device that has all the bells and whistles. None of this matters anyways because in this subform people complain when their lock screen lags as unusable so phones would go through the wall with something that would have as many bugs as this would have.

+1 im running dk28 as a daily use bug free and I see threads popping up about how bad it is. 1/2 of all problems I'm reading about are install related. This also speaks to a lack of organization in the epic forum. Combine that with the spread out duplicate files all over (i think there are 3 different di18 pit files, at least 2) the whole development forum needs to be restructured. On top of that add in how critical the standards are from the users like onilink said. Have patients and quit holding the epic to the Evo just cause there is a froyo leak. When the source is out and the kernel gets overclocked, then we can start a new outlook for Epic development.

I installed DK28 via the 3-button method, didn't do a wipewipewipe or factory reset. I have since done the wipewipewipe, and that did help speed/smoothness wise. I'm having pretty cruddy battery life though...seems like a dumb question (and I'm not sure how this could be related, but here goes) but could not doing the factory reset left some garbage in there that's causing this problem? I'm running watchdog and I don't see anything out of the ordinary, this thing just goes through the battery like a piranha on speed.
At this point, I'm seriously thinking about Odining back to DK18. I take the phone off charge at 6:30 am, and it's dead by 2pm.
A factory reset is mandatory to install froyo

Don’t get me wrong, Im the happy beneficiary of rooted stock. And for the folks that are all about the phone geek thing knock urselves out, Im enjoyin the reads. But let's be honest,GB isn't a warm fuzzy balance of enhancements for time invested.
After couple of functionality tweeks like rooting for bloat reduction, Froyo is highly functional and solid. I personally have a limited amount of free time...which incidentally is maximized by my highly feature-laden rock solid DX...and while Iapplaud u bleeding edge cowboys, I'm gonna stay put...til Moto releases GB and somebody here gets it rooted.

Technically with the locked bootloader everybody is running a Motorola released version. This new version of gb that was released was by an ota to a few phones. While not a full fledged update to gb it is very stable and reliable. I have been on it and have zero problems. All of my apps appeared. And no bootloops. The directions for everything that needs to be done are very well done and there is almost a zero percent chance of truly bricking your phone. And with sbf'ing and everything I had to do to get to gb it only took me about fifteen total minutes to get there. Enjoy your stable Froyo and popcorn and I will enjoy my stable Gingerbread.

What's the point? Why do you do things that you do? It's simply because this is a development forum for people who enjoy this stuff. We enjoy flashing things and learning all we can about this stuff. It is fun for us. The reason people have issues is almost 100% user error. That means that they forgot to do something. Or didn't fully download a file. Or did something in the wrong order. There's almost never a problem with the software provided to us. The files work, people just make mistakes

+1. With the locked bootloader and no way for people to try to flash the radio or kernel. It has made this phone nearly impossible to hard brick. I only know of one. Every other person has worked through there problems by the helpful people and guides on this and other forums. You stick around here long enough and you will be eating gingerbread instead of popcorn.
Edit: I should say no way to flash a custom kernel or custom radio.

While I share the philosophy of the OP (waiting for OTA and z4root-esque rooting), I don't agree that anyone should avoid applying GB. I did that sort of thing with my WinMo phone and if I felt the need to GB now, I absolutely would with no worries about the quality of the rom.
And with the potential for a long break without being rooted, I may just do that. I'm not up to speed with a lot of this, but will a root for the OTA be possible and will it take some time? I needs my AdFree, Tether and CacheCleaner.
I'm not trying to go against the tone of the thread here by saying this, but I have Gingerbread and am really not looking back. Stock Froyo was boring, everyone will agree with that. From there you had either ApeX or rubiX (or later Liberty). I ran all three actually and settled between Apex and rubiX Focused. Apex is/was good for battery life and overall stability. rubiX Focused is/was good for speed and stability, battery life was a bit less than Apex. But to me Gingerbread is the best of both worlds. 30-40 hour battery life PLUS the much improved (for most) Quadrant scores and overall speed and snappiness is like rubiX + ApeX. (video here)
I guess all I'm trying to say is that *when done properly*, if you flash from your favorite ROM to Gingerbread it's completely doable without any hitches or hangups. The thing to remember here is this: you're going from your favorite build/ROM/setup to something completely foreign. When I first flashed 2.3 (the most recent OTA, deodexed & rooted) there were some things I complained about. Then, with time and just playing around with it, I figured them out. I think most people are "having issues" with it because it's really that much of a change. It's not the jump from 2.2 to 2.2.1. It's a whole new setup, interface and all. I think it's the process that scares people, and that's understandable, but just remember.. it's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to brick your phone. With SBF, you'd almost have to be trying to mess things ups. Find a decent guide and give it a shot. You can always flash back to your current setup.

Just a heads up, be careful with Wireless Tether on 2.3.. or even 2.2 if you're going over 5GB. People are saying that's being watched now.
I didn't really say "what's the point", I said the reward for time spent seemed dubious.....and I said I applaud the efforts and am the beneficiary of them. But damn there's lotta varying degrees of success. Part of my trouble is my PC's incompatibilty with the DX drivers that prevents me from sbfing....which seems like the safety net.
Buy beyond that I haven't read anything that puts GB so very much up the foodchain from froyo ....boring? Froyo is boring compared to GB how?
And zippy? My DX is very zippy...
Maybe Im not running enough stuff ;-)
I have to say, extended battery life has my eyebrow raised...that'd be welcome.
To be honest I was thinkin about loading the dx drivers on the DAW side of my dual boot XP box...down side is that boot is offline with no antivirus etc to maximize the resources for the studio ....don't wanna **** up a well-oiled machine....which brings me back to sittin in my chaise lounge on the sideline til GB is as easy as rooting &deodexing was.
Thx for the civil discourse.

I am definitely getting better battery life. The other day I calibrated my battery and had to wait for 1 day 13 hours and change before the thing finally died. Also if the drivers aren't working for you try this. http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/d...-solution-your-windows-rsd-lite-problems.html
just put it on a cd and go. It is linux. I haven't used it since my windows 7 64 bit system did the job for me just fine, but I have heard a really good response with this. Also, if you have any questions about it the guy is really good at answering them.
Since you are on stock....you are really in the perfect position to upgrade to gb the easiest. Root, Droid 2 Bootstrap, wipe, run the 3 files from tbh, wipe, and reboot. Off you go.
Just to note TBH has put out a rooted version of the GB leak....
I have blur_version.23588.p1 p2. And p3 plus the droid 2 bootstrap. So ur sayin I'm good to go from 2.2 rooted stock froyo up to GB without needing any sbf connection to my PC, right?
This is a good time for me to phuck around w the phone cuz Im off this week.
Couple of last questions :
I bought power amp...am I gonna lose it?
Does the camera settings issue mentioned recently apply to me on this load?
What does OTA stand for?
Can I get back to froyo 2.2 without sbf?
How many pecks in aa bushel?
Thx

1. No it will redownload after you flash
2. Yes. No idea why or how to fix
3. Over-the-air. It is an update sent directly to your phone from Verizon.
4. No. But SBF'ing is not difficult at all, it's just the idea that scares people and that people make stupid mistakes
5. I think two, or four maybe. But that is completely unrelated. Look it up
Thx....damn quick response.

No joy.
Got an abort on the first file. (Good place to get one I guess). These files were downloaded to the wifey's laptop and copied over.
One distinction ...instructions here included "wipe", but the instructions from the modderX site did not mention wipe.
Furthermore there are 2 wipes .... I tried wiping the cache...no joy. The other wipe looked too scary..sumpin about reset factory blah blah blah.....
Its good to be on vacation.
