I'm looking into getting the galaxy tab but I will not pay for the data plan since I own an evo and can just tether it and only use wifi, but my question is, can I download an app that stores map data on the sd card and use only the gps so I don't need to pay for a data plan? Or would it even be plausible?

With wifi, you are able to download android apps.
I don't think you need a data plan or need to download any maps for navigation. On my galaxy tab I have mapmyindia navigator. On my Samsung omnia (wm) I have route 66, none of them ever use data. Only Google navigation uses data.

I am using Route 66, Sygic Mobile Maps and NDrive, all with preloaded maps on my Galaxy Tab in Hong Kong. All can run without data plan. The map data is stored on the SD card. However access to data will allow for faster searching of POI and some of the map applications will give you instant traffic updates or speed camera updates that way. So in short, yes it is possible.
I'm using CoPilot on my tab and it works great. No data plan.

It works well for me with the GPS fix, when I go into the city it knows wats going on and is faster than my navman, I still prefer the look of Google maps, but its too jerky.
Try it out, it was free in Samsung apps, it was called Samsung navigation or somthing

I'm pretty sure Navigon is only free for Australia and New Zealand, but you can buy it for other areas. The free version will come up on the Market if you use 'Market Enabler' and code in Telstra AU. Be patient as you may have to wait awhile for it to show up on the Market.

I am very excited to see all the great work that has been done to achieve voice+data on the AT&T Galaxy Tab (and T-Mobile). I am a VZ customer, and have been for 6+ years. I was hoping to pickup a VZ GT, and be able to use voice on it (at some point), but going to the AT&T store tonight and playing with a GT has made me far too impatient to wait. I want my GT now!
Leading into my question..
As I have no relationships with AT&T, I have no idea their plans, pre-pay options, etc., not to mention what will work best for the GT. I want to know what is the best way to setup a plan and get a SIM that I am going to be able to use in an AT&T device to achieve voice+data.
Thank you, and I hope forthcoming answers will be of assistance to all the others out there like myself!
Need more info. How heavy do u use internet? 250MB is $25+voice plan i believe, 39.99.

Fairly heavy, and I can only see it going up with the GT. The voice - not a ton. Something like 200 minutes per month. I doubt that wold be increasing.
After reading around, I think the best solution for me is going to be:
AT&T Galaxy Tab
SIM Unlock
Voice Hack
Simple Mobile $60/mo plan for 'unlimited everything'/

Don't know if this is apparent from their website, but Simply Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller, so you won't get 3G data from them... only EDGE.

For my needs right now, I think EDGE is going to be ok.
As this is a device I "want", but dont have to "have", I can take some time and keep looking for a better way to make this work the way I want though.
Can you wifi tether this and just use my home network? If do i have to get the data plan

yeah you dont have to get a data plan. that would be crazy. in a nutshell and please excuse the comparison but essentially it is like having a big ipod touch. you dont have to buy the data plan and dont let anyone tell you that you do.

little off topic here, but if you're bored, i wouldn't mind a review of the tab. i've seen it from the tech blogs standpoint, but i'd like to see an actual user review it.
just a thought.
It depends on the version you get whether you need to buy with a plan or not. Sprint, for example, does not offer the tab without a plan, but Verizon does.

I was perusing the Sprint site and the plans for the Tab. I currently have an EVO 4G through them. My question is regarding the GPS. Sprint wants to charge $10 to use the GPS. I'm trying to determine is this necessary to utilize Google Maps or any other GPS software available?
Screw that!
You have an EVO, root it then use the wireless tether or Hotspot feature and use the Tab on WiFi only. No plan necessary and still be able to power up your Tab anywhere your EVO goes

Believe me, my EVO is already rooted, and that's the game plan: to tether the Tab to the EVO, but I'm specifically asking about GPS. In order to use the GPS features of the tab, will a plan be necessary. Is there anyone that is currently using the GPS w/out a plan?
Yep, I am. No plan necessary

I also use my Sprint galaxy tab Adhoc-ed to my SE X10 and I can use my GPS navigation and GPS apps very nice
Using ALK Copilot USA...
and no Sprint data necessary. Copilot is currently $5 in the market and works very well w/Galaxy.
Yeah screw paying to use the GPS. Just get an offline gps apply like copilot and you'll be fine. Mine doesn't even have a sim card installed and its still fine.

Copilot is nice because it stores the maps on the SD card so no need for data signal.
About to head to Europe with our Xoom's. In case we need to use them when wifi isn't available (like for google maps), what do we need to do to use 3g internationally (knowing that we will pay through the nose)? Thanks.
eric
Call and activate intl. data plan. But it is cdma only. So you might be SOL. Do you have a worl phone you can use to teather it to.
Just remembered the Xoom is CDMA only - duh! Never mind...
eric
I believe xoom has 3g gsm version, not only cdma version.
Regards
as i discovered the hard way, depending what country you come from, mobile phones can easily roam, but data is a killer, for us aussies anywhere else in the world incurs a 15 aussie dollar per meg data charge, so best way to go is, find a free wifi spot
You can download sections of google maps for offline use you know.

I wanted to know if it is possible to use simple mobile and galaxy tab and get 3g and voice? and does voice and data work at the same time? Where can i go to get started if this is possible thanks. Everything is scattered so searching is difficult and i have not seen so far a thread saying for sure if its working with 3g thanks
I am thinking of getting a galaxy tab is it worth it? Are there any other tabs that can get voice and data?
You can't get voice and 3G data at the same time in the US whether its with T-mobile or simplemobile.
If you really have to have a 7 inch cellphone get an at&t version. It can do voice and 3g data at the same time.

Saying there is no way is like saying there isn't a Gingerbread update for a US SGT. There is a simple, very effective workaround.
Sign up for Google Talk and then download GrooveIP.
Works perfectly.
It is so well integrated into my tablet experience that I never consider my SGT NOT being a phone.
I think you can still get edge with phone. Just not 3g. But right. There are many other alternatives. I used to use sipgate (paid $20 a year ago and I still have $16 on it). It is acceptable if you are talking to people who are used to international call. I just got galaxy s2 as a real phone and still using sipgate for any international call and surprisingly it sounds better than cheap phone card (sip rate is cheaper btw) so it is still a good alternative. I just would not recomend going through google voice because the latency gets worth with it.

At&t tab and simplemobile sim card = voice and edge is maximum speed (2g) data.
T-mobile tab and simplemobile sim card = voice and edge data. *
Att tab and att sim card with voice and data plan = voice and 3g data.
The network bands are different for the tabs for the high speed data but they are the same for edge data and voice. No modem can fix the hardware difference.
I had both versions and the att version was better when I wanted voice and data. Now I just use wifi or tether the tab to a smartphone.

Oh okay I would go that route but at&t plans are too expensive. simple mobiles $60 plan is really cheap at&t cheapest plan i found was $84.99 plus tax thats with only 2gb data. Maybe there will be a tab that can work on simple mobile or at&t 3g or 4g

Just an update, I know he is asking about simple, but I have moved from T-Mobile
to AT&T, and now have voice and 3G+H, depending on area location.
