Questions for a Noob -- and the Noob is not me! - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my sister just bought one of these phones. I was naturally excited because I am a huge Android honk. Had my Droid and current Fascinate for a combined 15 months now... Rooted both of them every which way, etc.
My sister on the other hand, not so much. Probably should have sticken with an iPhone. However, I would never actively promote that now that she already has an Android phone.
1st Question I told her I'd look into.... Can you use Skype Video w/o using Wifi? what are your 3G/4G Video Calling options then if Skype will not work?

Tango, ooVoo (AOSP ROMS ONLY), Fring i don't know about skype. I refuse to use it.

FWIW, the MyTouch 4g comes with Qik for video chat pre-installed. Qik was recently bought by Skype. Look for Skype to roll Qik into their app in the near future.

Thanks for the responses.
Just realized, the Skype app didn't even have video yet... Only the unreleased phones from CES do, I believe?
We will see what happens with Qik down the line...

You can't even use Skype voice over 3G (i.e. without WiFi) in the USA, let alone Skype Video when it becomes available. They must have rolled over for the US carriers

HTC Evo as HTC Droid Incredible

I apologize if there is a previous post regarding this question, I have search all over for an answer with no avail...
I was wondering if there is a way to trick the App Market into thinking that the Evo is the Incredible in order to download Verizon apps, such as Skype and the Inception: Mind Crime game?
I was also curious, if this is not possible, does anyone know where I might find the .apk files for those two apps?
Feel free to PM me with any information. Thanks all.
Cheers,
Terry

apps like skype will only work on verizon network
There is a skype lite version apk floating around that you can install on your phone that will work on Sprint.

The guy implied that if you are not on Verizon. The app will not work. So no, the app will not work
Re Skype
If Skype is your main concern, I found this story at Engaget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/skype-mobile-with-video-support-coming-to-android-market-later-t/
Seems Skype intends to bring a "direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. (i.e. similar to how we offer the iPhone app today)"
The current Skype app does not work for the Evo. I have the Verizon Skype app, and after you install it, it will tell you that it can't run because you don't have a Verizon phone.
Just wait for the new version to come out for everyone, or get Fring and SIPdroid or something. There are many ways to make it work, but nothing as simple as straight Skype.
has anyone who tried this hack.
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
try to dl skype for verizon? this hack is to use verizon towers and one of the effects is that when u dial *2 it goes to verizon customer service.
just wondering with this will it make skype work on the evo?

If you download the Android app - My Market - this app is like Market but lets you select your country / provider. Select US Verizon and you can download and install the Skype App, but you can't get it to launch. Choose US T Mobile for other apps.

Face time is advertised all over that it is for Apple, that is why I was surprised that someone would think it was for Android.

Yep. Works great on my Evo and xoom
FaceTime is a joke.
Just use Tango (etc.). Cross platform for iOS/Android on 3G and WiFi.
I call face time " face f*&# "

where did you get the .apk for Oovoo? I've used it for years and always found it better than Skype but couldn't find it for the Xoom. All my family uses Oovoo so I would love to be able to chat with them on the go with this thing.

Did I miss something? Can we use Skype for video chat on the Xoom?
Fring crashes on the Xoom... too bad.
The fact that google does not include a more obvious video chat is ridiculous.

Skype Video call?

I thought that Skype allowed u to make video calls from the tablet to a computer. Is this even possible?
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
No, none of the current Android tablets work in Skype with video. It is stupidity on Skype's part.
Oh man, that sucks. I was really hoping for some cam action with my wife tonight.

You can use Google talk from tablet to PC. Your tablet already has it, and your wife just needs to install a plugin in her browser to use it straight from her gmail inbox.

I don't think it's stupidity on Skype's part at all. I think it's quite deliberate.

I agree with you because they arleady have a working version on the android phones with the video calls enabled so what is the big deal to do that for tablets also they developed one for the ipad

Yes actually both of you are right. When Nvidia announced the Tegra chips back in the day, they showed off a hi-def Skype video call on a tablet. Somehow it never made it into our hands as a release version though.
The current android version of Skype supports processors that has the NEON instruction set, which Tegra does not have.
For all who are unaware.... There is an update for Skype just today supporting our a500
That's right, official skype on our tabs!
Skype 2.5 works great!
I installed it works great!

Skype video works for me under 4.010.13_COM_GEN2 (HC 3.1). Any idea if it works under HC 3.2?

Have you looked in the the Development section or the original development section to see if any of the ROMs in there fit your needs? There are also a couple of index threads in the General section that list the ROMs in certain classifications to make it easy for you.
Told you to wait it might not be what you wanted but it's an answer

It's my understanding that AT&T blocks native video calling, at least that's what I was told when I asked about this same issue.
Basically just use Skype or another video chat app.

There is a Mod out there to enable video chat on Stock ROMs (for Google Hangouts or chats or whatever it is called now), a search would probably turn it up. AT&T is supposed to enable it on all Android phones by the end of the year...if they keep their promise.

I think OP was asking about native video calling. As in open the dialer, dial the number and hit video call. The phone can do it, AT&T still has it blocked. Again, I'm repeating what I was told about this same topic.

Blocked yet daily I see a damn commercial for the s4 with a brother and sister using it as the younger brother enters high school for 1st time . advertising it but blocking it? Wtf is that? Every time the commercial shows I have to hear my damn wife bugging me why our S4s won't do it. This is why I'm asking. Lol
Apple probably patented it and is suing the piss out of everyone who wants to use it.
