i want to root my wildfire but before doing it i want to be shure i could unroot it just in case i will ned warranty support.
so im trying to install the ruu, ive an italian small carrier wildfire, ive tried the h3g (that is not the phone carrier) and ive tried the generic wwe htc ruu (not thhe one for asia), different versione 14, 25, 37 but its not working anytime.
this is what happen when i run the ruu: the ruu after running says is waiting for bootloader, after waiting one minute it says error 171 usb connection so at this time the phone is in boot mode with the black background and the big htc write. i restart the ruu and this time goes on, but after saying its copying the firmware gives again error 131 client id and stop. after this the phone restart.
what can i do? do this means that theres no ruu for my phone to restore so i cant root or if i will i just wont be anyway able to unroot and will lose any warranty support?
Error 131 is generally issued when you have a specific operator Wildfire. You will need to create a goldcard to install the generic RUU then. Is your wildfire operator locked?
the only carrier customization is that theres only the carrier logo when the phone start up for the first seconds on the screen but the phone has no carrier lock or any other lock and no other customization, its totally a free lock phone.
just the phone is bought from a carrier that is like H3G and the froyo update too its not yet been released cause the carrier should do it.
its hard to do the goldcard? and if i restore the phone with a ruu that is not from the same carrier i will lose warranty support? only italian ruu ive found is from H3G, i know this is a totally not customized rom from H3G. Should i lose the warranty as this is anyway a factory ruu that will install the factory rom and is italian too?
Creating Goldcads is easy. There is a guide here on XDA, Just search for it.
As for whether you will lose warranty or not if you flash a WWE RUU, there is no way I can answer that, because, different companies follow different rules across the globe. Ex: Here in India, I am pretty sure they wont be bothered which RUU you have, as long as it is an RUU. (Coming to think of it, they are so unbothered they may even accept WF's with Custom ROMs )
calling htc tech support in italya they told me i cant change the ruu, if i put a different one i will lose warranty
theres a way to save the rom in my phone to revert to it? or theres a way to save the OTA to 2.2 that i will receive (i think this month) from my carrier to use it to revert to the official rom? or any other way to find my ruu from my carrier to download it from htc or web?
There is a way to backup the original ROM, but, that requires root itself. (Nandroid, available in ClockWorkMod). Since there is no RUU available for your carrier, and, since warranty support seems important to you, I would recommend you keep your phone as it is.
Also, one more thing, when you update to 2.2 OTA, you will lose the ability to root.
yes i know but i think soon there will be a wildfire 2.2 new unrevoked version so if i can save or download the ota to use it like a ruu i could update to 2.2 than root and use the old ota to restore the phone
the first reason i wanted to root the phone was to increase the cpu, theres no way to do it with the unrooted phone right?
actually i think i got to wait

I would actually wait till the tool releases, before updating to the new OTA, because, there is a lot of uncertainty when the new Unrevoked will release. As for downloading the OTA, I dont think there is a way again (atleast as far as I know) , if it is not listed at Shipped ROM's. If you download it, it installs itself.

Correct. It most certainly requires root.

The fastest way I found of debranding the startup on both orange and tmobile startup screens is by installing a WWE rom. via RUU or update zip. Once you've done this, the startup logos for either orange/tmobile will be automatically removed. Have to say I love the support HTC give for roms for this cos its so easy. Then just use any custom ROM you like and no more BRANDING !!!!!!!!!!!!
Can I just ask;
01; If that using the WWE firmware it will remove the HTC sense UI or still keep it?
02; Can you apply the WWE firmware without rooting the device?
1) WWE is a generic rom as far as I know so it will remove all the branding from mobile networks and only leave HTC stuff on there. Sense stays as it is as its not network related.
2) I've rooted my device and it works. Haven't tried on an unrooted device so can't really answer. If you can get an WWE RUU update it should work without rooting as its and official standard rom.

Thanks for this info, might try it. I have just read though that you need to root it to do a nandroid backup of the device. I won't do a firmware change without doing a full backup first.
Do you no any method to do a full phone backup without rooting?
Much aprecciated for the assistance.
Right, after reading a ton of posts, threads blogs e.t.c I finally got it managed to do it via the goldcard method, flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk, recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.3.1, RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver, HxD && HTCSync.
Only things I back up are apps and data using MyBackupPro. So don't really need to root it unless you wana save literally everything.
And I've done this via unlockr.com's one click root method (flashrec, etc) not the goldcard method and then installing a generic rom. But whichever works for you best.

I found out that the new rom that T-Mobile/HTC produced locked out flashrec and you had to downgrade the ROM to use flashrec sucessfully. It only worked with the goldcard method and thankyou for your help.
Ye unfortunately networks really can be a pain in the ... I tend to stick to generic or custom roms as they have less in them than network modified roms. Hope it works after the goldcard method as I've never used it.
Hi
I Had a rooted Htc Hero on Tmob and decided to try the official 2.1 update
But I must say I was disappointed, so even any one thinking of doing it my advise is don't unroot.
THere is no live wallpaper as Hero wont support it
Facebook wont snyc with contacts
I prefer the rooted custom roms better and since I had my gold card img am back to my rooted version on froydvillian 1.1.1.
this is what i did ----DONT TRY THIS..... UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING
TO UNROOT
1. downgrade to tmobile official rom
check on htc webiste for the rom as i cant post link
run it and update to the tmob rom - you will obviously loose root
once setup it will ask you to update your phone to a small 3mb firmware update
(if you said no to get it back just factory reset phone)
after the firmware it will automatically give you the option to update 2.1 ota update
( if not factory reset phone again)
and you should have your official 2.1 tmob.
TO ROOT PHONE AGAIN
1. Downgrade with the generic RRU same like how you did before and for tmob customers do the gold card thing again
(hope you have your goldcard img still in the email) like i had mine
then the usual flash rec and amon ra recovery
and thats it you back to unroot
1. DOWNGRADE to 1.31 using this tutorial.
You do this by copying the RUU on your Goldcard and executing it.
2. Keep your Goldcard in, install this RUU.
Maybe other RUU files work too, I tried this one only. After successful install, check for updates on your phone, upgrade to 2.1-update1 and then again to FroYo!
It didnt work for me without step #1.
Edit: Instead of the RUU mentioned above under #2, you may install other Vodafone RUUs adapted to your country. Haven't tried them out though, but the UK Vodafone RUU seemed to work according to macnpaul.
this will give you vodaphone firmware with branded apps/etc? does the vodaphone froyo not have the CID check?
this gave me froyo with a boot screen from A1 and as far as I can tell no vodafone apps.
did you use the RUU_Legend_Vodafone_AT_GER_Mobilkom_1.31.177.3.. instead of the RUU mentioned in the tutorial or after downgrading to 1.31. as explained in the tutorial?
does this involve rooting ?
cos that tutorial seems to be for rooting :\
no, I don´t think this involves routing,
I think this changes the version number for you get no error 140 when loading an older RUU
This method does NOT involve rooting.
Do one step after the other. First you install the first ROM (non-Vodafone), then you install the second ROM and then the upgrade path to froyo is available to you. This avoids the [140] error.

HELP!!
I did exactly as described in the tutorial, i.e. downgraded my debranded Voadafone Legend from 2.05 to 1.31 and then installed the German 1.31 rom. No problems. I then used the phone to upgrade OTA to german vodafone 2.05, again no problem. Finally I then used OTA to get Froyo. The update downloaded OK and seemed to install OK. However, when the phone rebooted the touchscreen doesn't work and I can't unlock the phone to use it. I've tried rebooting several times by removing the battery and also clearing the cache and doing a factory reset - all to no avail. The phone works as a can call it but I can't answer it as tghe screen doesn't work.
As I can't get into the phone at all I can't even set debugging mode to downgrade back to something that works.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks in anicipation.

Yeh, I had a look at that earlier. He managed to get into the phone though so he could make changes. Mine is just stuck solid on the lock screen. I did just notice that when it is starting up the language on the lock screen goes from german to english and then back to german. Weird.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Yes I can. Will that help?
Another thing I tried that didn't help was renaming the German Froyo update file as update.zip and then installing from the SD though recovery. The full intallation seemed to happen but the screen still stays locked.
I also tried extracting firmware.zip from the update, renaming it to legeimg.zip and then puting it on the SD card. With a standard SD card fastboot says incorrect CID or something similar. With a goldcard it says no image or wrong image.
If it's of any use to anybody the Hboot version is on the phone 0.43.0001.
Probably a stupid question, I got a debranded vodafone legend with all the latests updates (apart from 2.2 obviously) and my hboot is 0.43.0001. But where can I check my rom version? Or is it 2.1 as shown under settings - software?
its something like 2.05.405.2 a little bit further down the menu.
Thanks that is what I ment. So I do need to downgrade first. Does anybody happen to have a mirror for the ruu file? Because shipped roms doesn't seem to work atm. All downloads get cut off.
Massive thanks to RunSeven
I followed the link to downgrade but used a vodafone UK rom (instead of the one mentioned) to put my Legend back to how it was before I debranded it. That allowed me to upgrade to FroYo using the OTA updates.
Obviously I now have the branding back, but I can live with that.
Worked for me!!
thanks !
Basically i'm after any advce please.
I debranded my Legend a few weeks ago (was UK Voda) its now on 2.03.405.3
I have an option ota to go to 2.05 then pressumably to froyo.
Do i give it a go, has anybody been able to get debranded to froyo via ota.
Or do i re-create a goldcard and go back to Voda 1.32 which i have downloaded ready.
If i stick with debranded and try froyo will it be any harder to go back to branded Vodafone after?
Or option 3 should i stick where i am and wait for a 2.2 RUU?

No, it won't be harder, I think. Probably the update to Froyo will fail with debranded rom, that is all.

Don't know if that will ever arrive.
Right now, the previous rage/Visionary rooting methods do *not* work with the latest 1.72 ROMs for the Desire Z.
UPDATE - If you have upgraded to 1.72 already without S-OFF, then a temp root has been achieved for 1.72, which gives you the capability to downgrade to an earlier ROM (e.g. 1.34) where you can permanent root. The "psneuter" procedure is at via this procedure - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
UPDATE 2 - This "psneuter" procedure can be used to achieve permanent root. If you obtain S-OFF at an earlier ROM level, *then* update to 1.72, you can get permaroot with psneuter, then use the usual methods to lock this in as a permanent root. This is because the S-OFF means the NAND write protection will not be enabled. If you are already at 1.72 without S-OFF, you will have to downgrade, obtain S-OFF, then upgrade again.
This ROM version is being rolled out as an OTA update to European DZ users. So far it doesn't seem to have been rolled out to other DZ carriers, e.g. Bell, Vodafone, though I suspect that it is only a matter of time.
This update does not *yet* affect the G2 running the stock T-Mobile ROM, though again I suspect this update will make its way to the G2 in time (so you might wish to turn off automatic checks for updates if you want to avoid the possibility).
This is an example of what is in the warning thread at the top of the forum, i.e. don't upgrade to this until we know how you can root it, assuming you are interested in root (which I think most, though not all, people here are).
I've tried all kinds of stuff but nothing works.
I've even made a goldcard with a PC10IMG.zip (rom extracted from RUU) but it gives me an error: MAIN VERSION OLD
So flashing back to an older version.............forget it!!
RUU, Visionary and Gfree method will not work with this stupid update!
Does anyone know what's in the 1.72 release that we're missing ? (And therefore whether its worth S-On & de-rooting)

The Virtuous ROM includes all the stuff in 1.72 already. So there's no point derooting and going S-ON, just install Virtuous.
Sticky worthy untill a solution is found.
rmk40 already found a solution to rooting these newer builds, but it requires changes to the SuperUser app. He's submitted those to the author but there hasn't been a new version release yet.
Hm,I`m now on stock 1.34.405.5 Firmware (RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e _26.03.02.26_M)
but rooted and S-OFF with UBERROOT method!
Now if I flashing this Firmware I still have S-OFF but I lose
Root and can`t Root again right?
The same happens if I trie this Root and S-OFF method and flashing
the new Firmware:

Glad there is a dedicated thread for this. I have applied the OTA (stupid me... should have read this forum first) and am now looking forward to getting root again so i can do SetCPU to underclock when screen off..
I'm happy to do any testing for those who get anythin working.
Also noticed in this new ROM (OTA) that when i plug in my wall charger, it goes straight into "CAR PANEL"?!
When i use the official HTC cable it does not - but when using a mini USB cable + micro USB adapter, it goes straight into car mode.
Does this have the same issue if you just flash the radio?

But the OTA update also flashed the bootloader and recovery back to stock.
The only thing positive with this update is the batterylife.
It hase improved bigtime!

There's a note in the manual for the DZ that says if you use an adapter it will think it's plugged into a car kit.
Hi
I've been hammering at this problem for weeks now and its really frustrating. I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
I cant get my phone to update to Froyo. I'm dying to see if the update wil fix my missing wifi issue that I picked up with the last update.
Currently I'm at:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 47.26.35.04u_7.05.35.26L
Kernel version: 2.6.v29-e3993620 htc-kernel(at)and18-2 #1
Build number: 2.06.709.3 CL193617 release-keys
Software number 2.06.709.3
The phone is unbranded, bought in China. I'm not sure if it was tampered with.
My phone picks up the OTA update:
OTA_Legend_Froyo_s_hTC_Asia_TW_3.15.709.3-2.06.709.3_release_160364d6o5a2er5k3kbifl
this fails on install, red triangle at about 25%
Tried doing it manually:
renamed above file to update.zip and copied to root of SD card
In HBOOT there is an error something about "legedimg" missing flashes up
Selecting recovery mode gets me a red triangle
pressed (power+vol up)
gets me into system recovery, there is a warning at the bottom "Can't open >cache >recovery>command
selected apply sdcard:update.zip, it works for a little while
get a bunch of stuff about "ro.cid" and and finally "HTC__621". "error in >sdcard >update.zip" (status 7)
Also fails.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here? HTC support has been useless. I'm now really stumped. Do I need a goldcard?
Hi! Yes, you need a goldcard because of the different CID you have and the update.
You may look for an update for your CID.
Why not root it while you're at it?
Thanks!
What is a CID? Is this not the correct update for my phone?
Are you suggesting that if I find the correct update I wont need goldcard or root?Where might I look for an update that matches my CID?
Since I'm on a mac, and dont have easy access to a PC rooting and goldcarding is a bit of a pain...
CID is Carrier ID, a number that locks your phone to carrier-specific firmware...
And yes, you need an update for your CID, then you don't need GC...
thanks. so do I have this straight:
1. My phone is locked to take only carrier specific firmware (even though its not actually sim-locked since I can use any sim I want) Sooo... "debranding" wont actually help
2. an update with the correct CID would work - though I dont know which one I need.
3. a goldcard would let me install the latest update via update.zip despite the CID issue
When I spoke to HTC support they said something about my phone originally belonging to Vodafone Germany. It was strange since I definitely have the chinese version loaded. I could try loading the vodafone germany update but then wont my phone become sim-locked again?
Am I getting this right? Thanks you have been a great help!
1. SIM lock and CID lock are two different things...
2. Yes, if the HTC said Voda Germandy, they're probably right...I presume you have purchased it from someone who used it before?
3. Of this I'm not sure, but It wil definitely help you root your Phone...
If you don't want to root, you can try to find an RUU upgrade - that's and app that will upgrade your phone from PC - try www.shipped-roms.com. But again, you need one that matches your CID.
edit: If you flash the RUU, rooting will be harder

Eemm, no. It was "new". They probably did something dodgy to keep the price down. Somehow, despite the CID issue, they were able to install the chinese firmware. It doesn't make much sense.

As far as I can see the latest for Vodafone Germany is "RUU_Legend_Vodafone_AT_GER_Mobilkom_1.31.177.3_Radio_47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L_release_126862_signed.exe"
I dont think this is actually Froyo?
That might mean that a goldcard is the only option. I take it the goldcard would essentially allow me to bypass the CID check and install whatever update I wanted?
I tried to install the latest vodafone version via update.zip on the SDcard, no luck, "assert failed"... status 7...
Sorted!
Well, I managed to sort mine out and upgrade to Froyo. And I got my WIFI back too!
Very simple...
1. Create Goldcard: Droid Den - Android Guide: How To Create a Gold Card
2. Install RUU (Legend Froyo WWE): Index of /shipped/Legend/
Worked a treat and was actually very simple using the goldcard helper app they recommend on that post. You need access to PC.
I tried updating using update.zip through recovery but that didnt work.
Phone is now working 100%.
I suppose issues might come up when I try to update next time OTA (if there is another OTA for legend), but worse case scenario I will have to use another RUU.
glad it worked out for you... can't imagine going trhough the stress
that's why im waiting for the Official OTA
Good it worked
@Qksi1ver: why are you waiting for OTA?If you root now, you have a shot at S-OFF, If you update your HBOOT, you wont be able to S-OFF...just sayin...
