Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) Theme - Desire Themes and Apps

I have been working on a theme for Alex-V's 2.3 Sense rom that is to look like the Galaxy S interface. Would there e any demand for it to be released? When I get a little further, I will upload some screen shots.

that will be really cool

Yep definitely interested, personally love the clean sms app and lockscreen, but hate the app drawer of touchwiz,
maybe a poll for this would be easier?

I will try to get a few screen shots up by the end of the weekend. I work away from home so I don't have access to my computer till Saturday. I might also try it on the Defrost 6.1 ROM.

Interrested too.

Should be nice, except for the app drawer.

OK. It will just be a theme, not a port. The app drawer and apps might follow later but for now it is just the main UI aspect I will be trying. As for the lock screen, The Vibrant can be unlocked by sliding it in any direction where as the Desire can only be unlocked by a downward slide. Can I change that?

You should ask in another post.

Best Launcher Features

Hey guys...my first post...but here goes...
I havent used a lot of launchers but 3 of the main ones. i.e. TwLauncher, ADW and LP. I found that each one of them has certain good features that I liked and I dont know which one to stick with.
What I'm looking for in a launcher:
1) Speed
2) Theming and Customisation
3) A good AppDock
4) A good App drawer
I like LP for speed and the app dock is okay, but I dont like the app drawer organised alphabetically. The customisation is good too, applying dock, backgrounds nd icons is easy.
I like ADW for the ease of theming and the app drawer is awesome, as are the gestures. What I dont like is the speed, and artifacts while scrolling.
TwLauncher I have to say has the best app drawer and its fast and light too. Needless to say there isnt much customisation and I have that you cant do much with the app docks.
Guess you cant have everything...but is there a way to get the best of all!
what i would really like to see is the launcher pro with the ability to transparent the app drawer like ADW...then it will be my best launcher
Well there are a couple more launchers on the market but ADW and launcher pro are definitely the best of bunch.
I think ADW has the most future potential being open source and free. The last two updates made it very laggy so I guess you'll want to keep an eye on what they are releasing in the near future.
I like launcher pro for now, if you spend some time on customizing it to your taste I'm sure it'll give you an overall much better experience than TW.
On a related note, it sucks you cannot uninstall TW because you need it to connect the phone to KIES. Still looking for a solution to that.

Actually, you don't need it as far as I know. See my other post on how you can connect with kies from within launcher pro: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8655368#post8655368
I dont really mind TwLauncher. I know its ugly and not customisable but the app drawer is okay...
I was hoping that samsung would update it with their froyo release, and give us a themable and customisable launcher...but unfortunately the update isnt going to make anything better

idea for custom home launcher.

hey i just thought of an idea for a new custom home launcher. Instead of having lots of screens for widgets and what not i want to do a scrollable grid either up or down or left and right. so u can scroll through widgets on one grid and apps on another. this would be kind of like a carassell effect but all one one screen.
what do yall think?
edit; nvm i think i shouldnt post after being out this late
Edit2: I'd be willing to try something new if someone developed the home
There is a super super confusing launcher called sweeter home. i tried it months ago. It scrolls up down left right, crazy ****. It was too much for me. Check it out.
Give it like a slot machine effect. I'd definitely try it. Good idea

Isn't the Arc launcher similar?

the arc launcher was buggy as hell when i tried it that was about 2months ago.
man i just wish spb shell would work on the hero i think i would have tears of joy if it did lol

Discussion on a Landscape Sense Rom

I would like to openly discuss the possibility of a Landscape Sense Rom.
When I am at work, or in my car, I always have the phone sideways either using the kickstand or in a pocket in my dash. This layout just seems more natural to me as the keyboard is bigger in this orientation. I would rather scroll up-and-down to read emails/txt/anything than sliding left-to-right and then sliding down to get more info.
I wonder if it would be possible to port the EVO Shift or Merge to the EVO and hard code the Rom to think that the keyboard is out. If I remember correctly, when I played with the Shift, the Sense home screen would switch to LS when the board was out.
We all know that there is, buried deep down in the files, an LS options in Sense. We've all seen the occasional "glitch" when exiting an app and Sense displays in LS for a second or 2.
If I had the skills, I would take this on in a heart beat. Unfortunately I do not.
As I said, I would like to start an open discussion on the subject. Thanks for your time.
Landscape sense? Do you mean Landscape Rosie because plenty of roms already support this or this can also done with Launcher Pro.
I forgot its Rosie. LauncherPro does do landscape, that's correct. But I haven't seen the ability to run Rosie/Sense Widgets in LauncherPro.
AOSP/plain Jane Android is nice, but it is nothing like HTC's package.
And while HTC continues to update that package, I believe they are missing a key option.
Have you checked out the Flyer port? Landscape, and consistently updated
I am actively following that topic, but am wondering why it is taking a tablet rom to get this accomplished.
I can't wait for Plattypus to get that working.
But one option doesn't really cut it. I see a ton of Sense/Rosie roms that are needing to be resized to fit the res of the EVO, and not one trying to take advantage of our HTC cousin slider phones.
Check out mikg 2.5 rom does landscape, and superfast cant go wrong. Its solid, stable, and in my eyes the best

I'll recommend Syngery, but I believe most of the gingersense roms have this feature

Cm7 vs miui vs sense

Just a little thread I wanted to make about a discussion on Roms around since I tried all of em and everytime I feel like switching to something new
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I really want to move to cyn but I like sense to much and the overall feel of it, miui is basically android iPhone far as I can tell
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I really like Sense as well but can see where those who hate it are coming from. I gave MIUI a try and much prefer the Sense 3.5 widgets, and all their colorful glory. I've used Sense since it was TouchFlo, so I've always had a place in my heart for it. CM7, while a purists form of Android, is too simplistic and also was too much work to setup to get it functioning like I wanted (my fault, as I really wanted Sense back).
To each their own...
I have tried all the types of ROMs and imho cm7 is the best and the most androidish.
Also I do like the newer sense ROMs(read 3.5).
Everything is about personal opinion and how you use your phone.
just my 2 cents.
cm7 is amazing, so fast and clean, i'd like to use it regulary. it took my breath away when i tried it out. but i'm missing the stock camera, news & weather widget, contact integration. and there were some smaller things i don't remember, all in all it was clean and fast, but did not have all the functionality of sense-roms.
To be fair, i didnt try out CM for some time and maybe i should have get used to it longer. I only used it 3 weeks or so.
i've never tried miui, but i absolutely love the miui-look.
so i'm using a no-sense ARHD with adw launcher ex with miui-icons and i think i'ts the best of all worlds.

ARHD..i had probs wid it...if u use it for a while..you get around 150mb free ram and if u multi task at times..apps get crashed...sense roms are too heavily ram based that is why most htc phones have memory of 700mb...
i'm changing a rom from MIUI, CM, and HTC No Sense, and the Sense itself..
for me, sense is still the best, and now i'm using the ARHD 6.1.5...
Until recently I was hooked on Sense. Now I use blackice which is cm7-like and I like it. There are three things I missed at the beginning: 1/ wheather-clock 2/ news widget and 3/ flip to silence the phone. Now I use the accuweather widget and the ics clock (eight cells combined, so the same as htc's), I wrote a custom news widget for the feed I read and still miss the flip-to-silence (but not that much).
At the end of the day they both have their pros and cons. And MIUI should be shot in the back of it's neck for threason .
i've tried cm7, miui, and a variety of sense roms. cm was spartan but functional. miui (i tried freshly squeezed) was great but it (and cm7) were missing something that makes me stay on sense: the calendar widget. i've searched for a good calendar widget so that i could stay on miui, but i haven't found one as good as the htc one.
i also like the htc lockscreen. i know widgetlocker can do it, but i don't want to run another program just for that...
CM9 all the way
I vote ICS ftw running beta 2 as a daily works ok aside from the listed bugs.
it is too early to flash ICS unless you're a dev and want to work on it for dev purposes...not a good idea to use it for everyday use...
Does anyone know a good sense rom with good amount of free ram?

I guess you could use runny4 with a script to free up Ram. You'll have around 270 MB ram after booting but of course, then script seems to kill the launcher sometimes....especially after using a resource heavy app. It's kinda annoying!
I've been using black ice ROM for a week now and I don't think I'll be coming back to sense, ever(except maybe to take a look at sense 4.0 when it comes out)! For me, it was just about finding the right widgets to replace the sense widgets. I've found quite a few excellent replacements in the market.
I'm still searching for something which can perfectly replace friendstream. I've tried pretty much everything there is...none of them work as well as friendstream did. Anyone got any ideas?

which theme you're using from theme chooser? using sense lockscreen app? which clock widget you're using...
For anyone who is missing the HTC weather wiget from Sense while they are on CM give Beautiful Widgets a try.
And I'm using the ICS beta. Sure there is no camera, you need to set up your data connection manually. The gallery force closes, but installing something like QuickPic gets round that. But all in all it is good enough for me to run day to day.

MIUI is pretty amazing, you dont have to use the default launcher you can install anyone you like but the theme engine is by far the best, it beats the Cyanogenmod theme engine. it can theme everything and i really mean everything from fonts to lockscreen to boot sound.

I agree with MIUI. Live the on the fly customization its capable of. And now with new ES Mod, you can enable native app drawer. Folder up the ones on home screen.

Try "android pro widgets" as a replacement for friend stream. Perfectly fits for me.
All roms have their advantages and disadvantages...I love them all ^^
What bothers me on CM and MIUI is the Camera.
The DHD camera is really good and it is a pity that it is not really supported at both roms.
I am currently using ICS ... Although I have no camera but this rom is amazing
I think the only thing that keeps me going on sense is the notification bar. I'm a big fan of how sense's pull down has a recent apps section an is split into two sections one for recent things and the other for quick settings.
I mean, I understand that you can get recent apps by long pressing home but the notification bar is in like most non full screen apps, pulling it down is simple.
I used to be hard core CM but then i started going back to Sense just for the way the notifications are set up. Perhaps if there is a notification bar recent apps plugin or fix for non Sense Roms, i would leave it.

I love Sense... Confessions of a AOSP lover

I've been a die hard AOSP guy. Came from a OG Droid then went to the Tbolt and helped port AOSP/Miui with that RIL but I hated it because it wasn't a full AOSP supported device. I got the Galaxy Nexus then a N7, N10 and finally a GSM Galaxy Nexus.
I swore I would be on AOSP the moment I got the device, but I held out. I tried it and I love it. There are some things I hate like the lack of quick notifications (4.2.2 issue more than anything) and a few quirks here and there. But I am in l am in love with the beautiful interface, perfect keyboard (AOSP, Swype, & Swiftkey had a three way and this is it's baby) and most of all I am in love with the gallery and camera app. It's a very intuitive interface on the camera although autofocus can be wonky. BUT that's all made up for by the gallery.... The events (initially annoying) is fantastic. I love Zoe because it adds just that little bit to the memory and I am loving the way highlights creates a montage of images to music. I wish the music had more choices but it is almost perfect. I have a 10 month old and it makes the memories that much more special...
Thanks HTC for putting your heart and soul into this device and coming out with the best smartphone I have ever used

you can expand some notifications in sense by zooming (pinching) out, there are no toggles though (altough older versions of sense used to have quick toggles before anyone else got them but somehow htc decided to ditch them in sense 4...)
Until we get 4.2... I have WidgetLocker and NiLS that gives me notifications on the lock screen.
Honestly, i am also an AOSP lover and i was pleasently surprised by sense 5, the only things that i miss now is the notification panel for my shortcuts, but i can get by pretty easy.
Also, hi there One community
There is messing a lot of things on this unfortunate and basic sense 5. Widgets, most practical sense widgets gone, skins (there are not any) only three different a kinds of unlock, application list never gone, always there. If you close your phone and open it, application list is there. Like blink feed but useless if you cannot add more feeds... So sense is very nice but there is munch things that missing...

I agree, Sense 5 is much better than previous versions of sense, but the app drawer really doesn't do it for me, still prefer almost everything about AOSP

I'm right there with you. I usually prefer the look and feel of AOSP - I couldn't stand Sense 4 or Sense 4+ - but Sense 5 is surprisingly good. It's almost as coheisve of a user experience as AOSP, if not more so.
I prefer a few things about Sense to AOSP – most notably the camera and the e-mail app. It also has some nice widgets, though nothing I couldn’t live without. I’ve actually come to kind-of like Blinkfeed when I have a few minutes to kill, but again, it’s nothing I couldn’t live without.
Occasionally, it even feels more cohesive than AOSP – for example, you can swipe left and right through e-mails in the e-mail app, the same way you can in the Gmail app. The last time I tried the AOSP Android mail client, it still didn’t support that, which was mildly infuriating.
Finally, Sense 5 is at least polite enough to try and compliment the Holo theme of AOSP – TouchWiz and Sense 4, on the other hand, look and feel like someone glued Gingerbread to Jellybean.
(I will still be SwiftKey 4 Life, though )
I never even setup Blink Feed... Thought it was stupid from the get go.
I installed Nova and have been loving the drawer and all the other great features.. the stock app drawer is lame though

Yeah I'm not a fan of Sense and put another launcher on pretty quickly. I would love to move to something like CM10 but until I hear things like the camera has no loss in quality or the IR sender is working then it's a no go. I just hope that HTC at some point change the layout and allow the notification panels. Also their lockscreen is like arse!
What do you mean with notification panels, you mean the extended notifications with reply, read etc? Because these have already been implemented in sense.

I think BlinkFeed is awesome. No more "what to do I'm bored" whenever I have a 2 minutes to check my phone. All the content I'm interested in is right there, waiting for me on the homescreen
I absolutely love sense 5 on this phone. I admit I have had to as Nova and other launchers run like ass on it, but it's faster and smoother than any other launcher anyway, and blinkfeed is brilliant.
AOSP CM etc are so ugly and featureless compared to sense. There is no single feature on 4.2.2, CM, AOSP or any launcher, I would now take over sense.
All I would take is the gallery app fom HTC One X or from the Xperia Z
Well done HTC.
+1 to the OP!
I love Sense 5, running my device stock/unrooted for a week since I got it and really don't miss full AOSP atm. Great work by HTC devs with Sense 5.
Ok... Here's my confession... I love TouchWiz. Sense too. These two skins are far better than AOSP.

Hi, my name is xcomputerman and I'm a Sense lover.
My previous phone was a Galaxy S II. I managed Touchwiz for a few months but couldn't stand it anymore, so I finally went back to AOSP. For a while I spent time with ParanoidAndroid, then later gave up the joys of hybrid phabletism for the sheer purity of CM10.1. It was Android nirvana. Or so I thought.
HTC's Sense 5 has blown me away. It is better than stock Android. Flat out better. I'll say it. I do have a couple of niggles with it (I'd rather have BlinkFeed as a home screen widget instead of the way they have the launcher set up), but man. Sense is slick. Slick, refined, polished. The email client is five times better than the stock Android one. The SMS app is gorgeous. The dialer is so sexy. The fonts are clean. I had this longstanding annoyance with AOSP email in that the formatting in Exchange email replies was always a little different/weird, but HTC does it right. Everything looks cohesive and well thought out. The camera app is brilliant. The syncing is really well done.
I'm not looking to go back to an AOSP ROM anytime soon. As it is, despite my annoyances with the sense launcher, I'm even hesitant to replace it with my favorite (Nova).
Well done, HTC. Well done.

The things you like have nothing to do with the skin of the phone. HTC could have just made a new gallery, camera and keyboard app without changing anything else.
Just because someone is an AOSP lover doesnt mean that they love all the stock android apps as well.
And lol at the person who said that cm10 looks bland, well you know you can just theme it however you like!

Most themes are horrid . If you like a clean theme your going to have hard time with cm. And sooner or later everyone gets over flashing. I did it for 3 years but now I know it's not even worth it and for such people sense is more then perfect. Clean simple and elegant.
