Hello fellow D2 owners,
I've had my D2 for almost 7months now and finally decided to attempt to root my phone. After much researching on a type of rooting process I was successful in rooting my droid 2. (I used "Easier 1-2-3 Droid 2 Root for Windows). Now, of course I'm needing to do backups and recovery apps just in case something goes wrong I'm able to return my phone to stock. My problem is, I'm unsure what kind of backup I should use. I've looked up nandroid, koush's bootstrapper, among a few other ways to "root/backup/recover your phone". Of course being the noob I am, I'm not sure what would be a good choice to attempt a backup. I'm feeling totally lost in how to even really start a backup for a D2. I've tried to read other forums, google, etc. Most of the posts I read are either outdated or the apps they suggest are no longer available wherever I look (market, appbrain, and google).
If anyone has suggestions or ideas of which way I should go without taking too much risk in bricking my phone I am all ears! Thanks so much for your help/suggestions!

First root your phone the best way is z4root (it's on XDA just google it). Then get koush's bootstrap which is on the market or on his website. It goes by DroidX/2 Bootstrapper:
Install it.
Hit ok if it asks you for root privileges
Hit 'Bootstrap Recovery'
Wait for the "Sucess" toast
Hit 'Reboot Recovery'
You should now be in clockwork recovery
Use the Volume keys to scroll down to 'backup and restore'
Select it with the Camera button.
Then select 'backup' with the camera button
and your phone will be backed up exactly like it was before you backed it up. It will be stored on your sdcard and can be restored from clockwork.
Back out of any menu in clockwork with the power button.
Hit reboot system now to get back into your phone.
Don't know how this got double posted.....?
Check this page out for further info after you get yourself rooted. It will be your best friend.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791227
Also when you backup, I think your supposed to mount your system and data first, but I could be wrong on this. To do this, in the clockwork recovery, select "mounts and storage", and be sure /system and /data are mounted (it should say "unmount /data" when it is mounted)
Also you can use the keyboard arrow keys and ok and back buttons as an alternative to the camera and volume keys.

Damn. I really need to update a bunch of threads...
So I've been looking all over and cannot find Koush's Bootstrapper on the market anywhere. I did see a Droid 2 recovery bootstrapper by ClockworkMod. Is this the same thing and will it back-up both the phone system and the stuff I've put on my phone like the different launchers, and apps? Thanks again for everyone's help! Really appreciate it.

I'll tell you...basically not good things
After updating lots of apps, I decided to run the command to remove the boot-cache through a terminal app on my phone, rather than through adb shell (sprint needs to hurry up and fix this bug.)
Unfortunately, the terminal app doesn't like landscape, so when hitting the front slash after the data directory, my finger instead (to my absolute horror) hit the enter key.
Hilarity did NOT ensue. Basically everything started FC'ing. I rebooted into recovery, did a wipe, and started over. Everything seems to be fine, but for those that are more familiar with the filesystem than I, could there be any residual effects, or would the wipe/factory reset basically take me back to step 1? Thanks!
I'm going to try and write an app that not only clears the boot cache, but also turns on net sharing, kinda like a "utilities" app in the interim until Sprint can fix our stuff. Should be simple enough.
Factory reset should take you back to step 1.
Have you installed the recovery ROM? It doesn't modify your actual OS at all, but it enables you to do "whole phone" backups via Nandroid. Very handy for just such an occasion.

I do believe so. I followed our five star "how to root the CDMA Hero" thread, and I think the RA-Recovery part was included there.
I'm assuming since I can reboot into recovery mode, this is, in and of itself, the recovery ROM you're talking about. I have the option of a nandroid backup in there.
So, then let me ask you this. If I get my phone how I like it, can I do a Nandroid backup, and always be able to restore to that point, similar to commercially available backup apps? Thanks for the quick reply!
a Nandroid backup will restore everything on your phone (not your SDCard) so it should work to restore even if you delete the whole /data directory. It's not tested but it seems like it should work since it's an image of the whole freaking thing.
Ok so this morning my alarm wakes me up and I noticed I had to unlock my phone to make it snooze, something didnt seem right as my alarm app usually comes up to the front and I can snooze without unlocking my screen. So what do I decide to do half asleep? I decide to reinstall the rom. Here are my steps, and I suggest you dont follow them.
1. Format system
2. Format data
3. Format cache
4. Mount system
5. Reboot phone (Swear this was an accident, as I was trying to navigate to the "install zip from sd card" option)
So my question is ,whats the quickest way to unbrick my phone. It just stays on the "M" boot logo. I found a couple of threads on different sites but want to make sure I"m using the latest method and for the Droid X. Thanks in advance

Looks like an SBF is in your very near future.
Go to the Development subforum and search there.
If you have not applied the OTA 2.2 update, you will need the instructions to SBF back to 2.1 and then apply the 2.2 leak, and load your ROM from there.
If you have already done OTA 2.2, there is also an SBF that will restore /system only. It Might save you.
BE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU DO NOT FLASH the 2.1SBF if you were on OTA 2.2. If you do, it will be game over.
Let us know how you fair.
One of the first things I did was the 2.2 ota when I got my phone.
Thanks, I will search there and report back.

Can you not get back into Clockwork if you pull your battery?? And they do have a 2.2 sbf that restores your system files.

if you hose /system you won't be able to get back into recovery. Recovery depends on the logwrapper in /system/bin. If it's gone, no recovery boot.
I'm guessing Format System pretty much took care of that

Correct, I cannot get back into clockwork recovery.
I can get into android recovery but I cant do much from there.

Yes. I think that is your only hope at this point. If it doesn't work, I think you are SOL.
I did something very similar to this, flashing the 2.2 System SBF fixed it
I'm back up and running. Thanks people.
good for you man. seriously. just read a couple threads like this. makes me real nervous about flashing roms.
Not nervous since I have insurance
Seriously I caused my issue with a silly mistake. Usually its smooth sailing.
Is it possible to make a 'restore point' so to speak? If I am happy with a rom and may want to go back to it, I don't want to have to restore apps, contacts, sign in to google again, etc. Can I make a complete image so to speak so I can return to exactly the state it was in before I backed it up in recovery?

Yes, you will need to root your phone (if not done already), and then install Koush's droid X bootstrap. Use the attached z4root file that I have attached and install this on your phone and use the permanent root option. Then install the Droid X bootstrapper. When the app is installed, open it from the application drawer and click the top button (this hijacks the boot process, and a "success" button will come up). Then click the bottom button (reboot recovery) and it will reboot your phone into the bootstrap recovery menu.
Once in green and black recovery menu, use the volume up/down buttons to navigate the green highlighted line and then use the camera button to make your selection. You can also use the back arrow button on the phone to go up a level on the menu. Scroll down to backup/restore, then choose the backup option. This will take roughly 5-12 minutes depending on how much data you have on your phone (apps, etc). When it is finished use the back arrow button to return to the main menu and choose "reboot system now" option.
If you ever need to restore your backup, just reboot to bootstrap again through the application and use the restore option.

No problem, glad I could help. Feel free to post back here, or on my guide thread if you have more questions!
I've had such great help in these forums (Nook specifically) I couldn't resist trying my luck in these (Droid X) forums as well.
So, I've searched for Clockworkmod threads but they are all (That I found or noticed) from back in August.
Plenty of info to be had on Titanium Backup.
So my question, is Titanium the backup/restore program of choice? I was hoping for an idiots guide to backup and restore (especially in the event of problems) but the guides are kind of sketchy on the restore part.
Titanium
Use titanium backup to backup and restore all your apps. Useful when trying out new roms, although without the paid version of titanium you will spend alot of time tapping through the installation screens as it goes through your apps. Titanium won't help you recover a broken system.
SBF
Use RSDLITE 4.9 with a .SBF file to perform what many call a "sbf". This is usually used to restore a phone back to stock, or to recover from a bad/corrupted operating system. If your phone is unbootable, this is your recovery option. SBF'ing your phone is not as scary as it sounds, just download the system restore file (.sbf), connect your phone via usb to your computer, and use RSDLITE 4.9 to flash the phone.
Nand backups / Clockwork recovery
Use clockworkmod to do a full backup of your phone. Think of it as a clone of your phone. Restore your phone by booting into clockwork recovery and instead of choosing "backup", use the "restore" command. It will then allow you to select one of the backups you have made with clockwork. Pretty easy stuff here.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was after. My only problem remains that I do not see any guides on how to go about downloading/installing/operating this program. I'll keep searching now that I know more about what I'm searching for. Thanks!
Search the market for "rom manager", it's free. Load it and tap "flash clockworkmod recovery".
You can use this app to reboot into recovery or by holding down the home and volume down buttons while pushing the power on button.
You can also download the DX bootstrapper from koushik's site, just google "koush bootstrap". Also free.

Woah there buddy.
I'm going to clarify this process a bit for you before you mess something up, if you don't mind.
Root your phone.
The simplest method is to search for Z4Root here in the forums...it's a .apk that roots your phone for you.
Now...
I assume you want a sweeeeeeeet rom, ya?
We can do that...
MY personal recommendation would be this...
Make sure you have at least 2-3 gigs free on your SD...it won't need to STAY that way...but during this process, it will.
Open your contacts.
Click the options button.
Backup your contacts to your SD card.
Now download Titanium from the market...
The free version works fine for 99% of what you need.
The only problem is (as mentioned) you have to manually click the "install" button for all 500098098098 of your apps when you restore...as opposed to just one button and letting it work for a few minutes.
Open Titanium and backup all of your apps+data.
Do you want Liberty 2.0? I personally use it and LOOOOOOVE it...but you currently have to pay $5.99 for it...a free version should be released soon.
If you do...just download liberty toolbox donate from the market.
It will install the rom for you! The option is under the "Rom Manager" part...
Make sure you select both options when installing....The "Backup" and "clear data" ones.
If you don't want liberty...read below...if you've chosen to pay the $5.99...skip down to the ****** below.
Download either DX bootstrap or Rom Manager.
Rom manager actually installs Clockwork...where bootstrap is simply a method of booting into clockwork via an application.
Either work fine.
Find the ROM you'd like to install and download the .zip
Put the zip on the root of your SD card.
Boot into clockwork.
(With DX bootstrap you click "bootstrap" and when it finishes click "reboot recovery")
Backup. (Camera button selects options, volume moves up and down, and power moves back a page)
Now Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Now...Wipe Data/Factory Reset
And again.
And again.
I usually do that 3-4 times just for extra security.
Now install zip from SD card.
Pick the "Choose Zip from SD card" option.
Find your rom's .zip
Click Reboot.
******
CONGRATULATIONS!
You're running a custom ROM!
Now...if you're contacts don't automatically start restoring...
You can choose the backup that you made from the options menu in your contacts.
Now...restore all apps+data with Titanium.
And you're back to where you were before the rom.
All your contacts...all your apps...
You may need to go back into your settings menu and change those back to your exact specifications.
Now...
If you don't like your rom...
You can boot into recovery again...
And restore to where you were previously with one click.
At this point after deciding I like the rom (I don't keep much free space on my SD)
I usually move my nandroid backup from before the rom to my computer...and delete it from my SD card...and then do another backup of my current (rom'd) setup.
I keep a copy of the titanium backup on my PC as well...and delete it from my SD card...there is no reason to waste a gig of space that can easily be transferred back when needed.
My recommendation is to always have you're most recent nandroid backup on your SD card and a copy of your last few on your computer.
You can rename the backup folders for organization...but don't use any spaces or special characters.
If you're REALLY hurting for space...
You can delete the nandroid backup safely if you have a microSD reader on your computer...in the case that your phone doesn't work and need to transfer the backup back onto your SD card.
Happy modding!
Thanks for the info, all of which answered my question just right. I've been using Gingerbread rooted & deoxed since Friday and it is quite nice. The improved battery life is phenomenal!
I want to STRONGLY recommend that everyone who is new/does not know what they are doing actually go through the process of flashing the rom. I was inexperienced once and I hard bricked it (unfixable). No one needs to go through that and anyway that's what keeps our bootloaders locked.
INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT STEPS
If you do not wipe data/cache/dalvik cache/battery stats, you will bootloop. Repeatedly wiping is not at all necessary but its good for ocd.
If you do not mount system and data, your phone WILL NOT BOOT and you will have to sbf.
SBF'ing is not difficult but a pain in the ass. First of all you do not need version 4.9. I used 4.7 three days ago to flash the most recent system version. Make sure that you have the file for your bootloader version or again your phone WILL NOT BOOT.
That being said, I have found that all problems are almost always careless mistakes or at least mine have been
You will find that as long as you're careful and follow all instructions, you'll never have any problems
Ok. Great info. I have been reading through the stickies n then came across this.
I am currently running darkslide 4.2 with blur. Flashed using clockwork mod on DX rooted with z4. I know that's alot of acronyms but yall understand. I used the bootstrap to get to clockwork and load everything using astro file manager.
Here is the question.
Do I have to wipe my cache in clockwork or can I leave it? So far I have left it n its running fine but doesn't seem any faster and my battery runs down in about a day.
I also use Titanium to back up my stuff but do I ha e to back up everything manually or is the free version one touch good enough? I noticed there are alot of things not backed up in to do list. I will happily get the donate version if its recommended.
Thank you all for your time and effort to answer our beginner questions.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Glad to see you are making progress, jperro. It never hurts (in my experience) to wipe the cache.
The paid version of Titanium backup lets you perform batch operations without interacting with every single install screen. There are other features that make it good, but thats the main one that saves you time/frustration.
I only back up a few system apps/data like Contacts Storage and Wifi Hotspots Storage. If I'm restoring my phone, chances are I'm either trying a new rom and I don't really want to muck it up with any old data - so I don't back up all the system apps/data that Titanium Backup shows as "not backed up". Besides, I've got nand backups in case I'm flashing back to a previous setup, so restoring system data or apps via Titanium seems redundant.
Ahhh. Ok. Thanks jeftep for the info. Very useful and informative.

IMPORTANT UPDATE
____________________
*[Warning!]*
The .621 system update that Verizon is currently pushing to the Droid X has potential to render your device without root access.
Worse yet, it breaks the ability to use ANY SBF file currently available...and any attempt to do so will brick your phone.
Developers are currently working on un-bricking the users who have already taken the .621 update and attempted an SBF.
This may or may not prove to be successful.
If your System Version is ends in .621 you cannot use this guide!
[Root Access]
There is currently no root method available for the 621 update.
However, users have reported that OTA RootKeeper from the Android Market will maintain root access if you run it before accepting the update.
Keep in mind: If you go this route...you can't go back.
NEW SBF
http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1517985 This SBF should work. Still no root method or ability to use prior SBFs.
Developers are unlikely to port their roms to the new base. And you'll never be able to return to .340/.596/.602/.605 or anywhere else for that matter. Thus: if you take this update, you won't be able to run a custom rom ever again. (Unless ports are made [unlikely]).
Root Method Achieved for .621

- Navigate to the "Backup and Restore" option with your volume keys and select it with the camera button. Select Backup. Let the process run.
- Once the Backup is complete, Navigate to the Reboot option.
- Open "Contacts" on your phone. Press the "Options" hard-key and find the "Import/Export" option. Export your contacts to your SD card.

- Put the Rom's .zip on your SD card.
- Use Droid 2 Bootstrap to reboot into recovery again. (Bootstrap Recovery > Reboot Recovery)
- Do a factory reset from within this menu.
- Navigate to "Install zip from SDcard" and select your Rom. Say "yes" to the install and wait for the process to complete.
- Reboot. Congratulations! Your phone should now boot up into the new Rom!

____________________
- Open the Android Market and you'll be prompted to log in.
- Download Titanium Backup / Bookmark Backup once again.
- Open Titanium Backup and open the "Batch" area again. Run the "Restore User Apps" option.
--It is always recommended to restore the "App Only" with this option. Any application data that you restore MAY cause Force Closes. However, it is up to you what you want to do here. Personally, I've often restored Application Data...and rarely does it cause a problem. When a problem DOES occur, fixing is as simple as Booting into CWM > Factory Reset > Reinstall Rom.
- Restore Your Bookmarks with the Bookmark Backup application.
- Open the "Contacts" application and import the contacts you saved earlier.
--This is only Necessary if you don't allow Google to backup your contacts to their servers.
____________________
IMPORTANT NOTES!!!
____________________
- When you're using a 2nd-init Rom (Cyanogen / MIUI) DO NOT use Droid 2 Bootstrap to boot into CWM once the Rom has been installed. You must either boot into recovery using the Power Menu or via Rom Manager's Recovery option.
- If you don't like the Rom you tried...you can restore the Backup you made in CWM. This may not work if you tried a 2nd-init Rom and decided against it. You'll then have to SBF, Re-Root, And Restore.
- Anybody who flashes custom Roms frequently has probably messed up at some point...or simply wanted a fresh start. That is where a SBF comes in handy. SBFing your phone isn't as scary as you may think. Follow this guide and you'll be golden. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/331-guide-flashing-droid-x-sbf/

Good stuff, wish I had found this guide BEFORE I flashed my first ROM a couple days ago! All the necessary info in one post!
You recommend "Backup Bookmarks" and I see that a reviewer on the Market has commented that "Contrary to "bookmark sort & backup" it correctly backup and later restore them in a clean phone. XML storage is also more safe in case of trouble." Can you confirm that this app is better/safer than "Bookmark Sort & Backup"? I used the latter and tried using Titanium Backup to bring my bookmarks over to VorteX 2.9, and since that actually worked I didn't need the other backup.
I have never bothered backing up my contacts since they are stored in the cloud on Google's servers. Should I be concerned about the integrity of the cloud, or should a local backup be made just so you can restore your contacts more quickly?
I had ended up needing to SBF to .602 after some tweaking on stock OTA .605 went horribly wrong (lol), and I ended up purchasing and using the Droid X bootstrapper, which worked perfectly for me. Does it not work on .605? Also, this needs to be used IN PLACE OF the version of Clockwork recovery you can flash using ROM Manager, correct? (Just making sure I have that straight.)
One more thing: If any user apps cause problems if you restore their data, too, shouldn't you be able to solve the problem by just clearing the individual app's data instead of doing a factory reset?
You should link to VorteX, by the way, I'm really enjoying it so far.

I'm trying to install the Liberty rom but it keeps giving me an error in the recovery. It just says can't open xxx.zip (bad) installation aborted. I checked the MD5 and it matched the file. Also tried it on Bootstrap recovery and Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0. Can anyone help please?

Sorry for the slow reply.
As far as the Bookmarks go...
I simply use that one since it's the first that popped up when I searched for an app to do so way back when.
No idea if it's safer or better.
And google does indeed backup your contacts.
And successfully restores them every time.
I only include that if you opted out of "keep this device backed up with my google account."
But you can still restore them if you do have that option disabled/enabled.
I actually heard that the Droid X bootstrap works fine now...but it hadn't in the past for some reason or another. I don't know if that's correct, but I KNOW the D2 works.
And via Rom Manger, you can use that as well.
Just remember to use the correct version...
Droid X or Droid X 2nd-init if you're on a 2nd-init rom. (i.e. CM7, MIUI, OMFGB, EncounterICS, etc).
And I suppose that is true, but the problem is you sometimes don't know what application is causing the problems.
You may get a FC on settings, for example...
Which app is causing an application that comes with the rom to FC? You may not know.
Or say your Wifi won't turn on.
What app is causing that?
Sometimes it isn't as clear as "Oh, Fruit Ninja is acting funny...I'll clear it and reinstall."
Do you want to edit your flash?

Lul wut???
Will this method work on a C-Spire/Cellular South Droid X?
So I downloaded the Droid X Bootstrap Recovery app and I was all ready to go. But I went to launch the app I couldn't find the ClockworkMod Recovery option, only Bootstrap Recovery and Reboot Recovery. I did the Bootstrap Recovery but nothing happened like you specified (I granted Superuser Permissions and then it just said "success!" and that's it). I think it's also worth noting that I can't get my phone into recovery mode in general. What should I do?

After clicking bootstrap, click reboot recovery.
That should work.
I haven't dealt with the Droid X Bootstrap in quite some time...so it's wonkyness may only be speculation on my part (could have been updated since I last tried).
If you don't have sucess:
Try toggling usb debugging to whatever it wasn't on (off, if it was on, on if it was off) and try again.
OR
Try this bootstrap application that was compiled from the D2 Bootstrap (that was [or is] the better option).

I keep reading in several threads that currently there is no way to get root on .621. I just want to make sure people know that I had stock .605 which was rooted via the DROID 3 easy root script v7. I kept getting the "update available" message so I went ahead and took a chance and accepted the OTA .621 update and after it was finished installing and the phone had rebooted I still had root. It's been several days now and I still have root. I use Root Explorer a lot and it works fine after the .621 update.
Your mileage may vary but I've had good results.

Your current root applications still work.
But anything new you try to grant root access won't work.
