Hey guys. It's been awhile since I've rooted my phone, and the only thing keeping me from flashing a new ROM was the fact that I intended to return my current Hero for one that wouldn't get dust under the screen (I have some in the lower left hand corner). Well, I've decided I'm either too lazy to go return it or I just don't care that much anymore. So, I would like to get a new ROM now In your opinion, what would be the fastest ROM right now, that is the most stable? Keep in mind, I do NOT want to use Apps2SD (I only have a Class 2 card). I also would like to eventually add those optimized APK's that have been zipaligned in the future, and I want a lock screen that is clear (displays carrier/time text though... I've seen one around somewhere), and I want a clear notifications pull-down. The only thing I've been paying attention to right now has been getting 2.0/2.1 on our phones, so I've lost track of all the ROM's that were made (maybe someone can sticky the ones BESIDES MoDaCo's?), so that's why I'm asking for your help.
Also, I've made a nandroid backup, and of course, rooted. Is there anything else I would have to do to flash a new ROM?
Thanks so much guys!
Fresh's 1.0 is my favorite
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584032
or his main site here: http://geekfor.me/
If you run the delock mod, it will remove the lock icon and make it clear:
http://bit.ly/delock
There is a known message app issue, make sure to run this update as well:
http://bit.ly/freshmsgpatch
Other than that, the apps are already zipaligned, just update via recovery.
Alright, that's pretty much what I needed to hear Thanks so much! Oh, and it doesn't have Apps 2SD right?
it does have apps2sd, but only uses it if your sd card has a EXT2/3 partition
i used fresh 1.0 as well. no complaints. however the new 2.1 rom looks tempting.

your welcome
you don't have to restore to stock or anything, just run the install after making a backup and your existing settings/data will stay intact.
I'm not using apps2sd and running it just fine.
I think you can set it up if you prefer it, but I didn't want to.
so the option is there I believe if you do ever want it

yeah it does, but I'm waiting until they get accelerometer and multi-touch working, I ran the install when it was first posted and like what I see, but I need a solid phone, lol
Oh, and this is REALLY noobish, and forgive me for not searching... but do I have to rename the ROM to update.zip?
Oh, and this is REALLY noobish, and forgive me for not searching... but do I have to rename the ROM to update.zip?
EDIT
Ok so I just watched a video on how to flash a new ROM for the HTC Hero (Euro)... do I have to Wipe Data if I'm installing Fresh ROM? Or can I just go ahead with Apply sdcard: update.zip?
no, just select choose zip

You shouldn't have to. Just load the zip onto your sd card and nandroid has an option to choose which zip file you want to install..

Ok wait, so it is a NO to having to rename the ROM to update.zip, but what about about Wiping Data first? Do I have to do that or can I just skip that and flash it?

No, just flash over what you have now. It *should* work just fine.
to be honest, I can't recall.
try it without first, if it never boots all the way and sticks,, then power off and wipe data through recovery.
Ok, thanks And then if anything bad happens, all I have to do is Reboot back into the recovery, and then press Wipe Data? Sounds good. Oh, and I should probably put my nandroid backup on my sdcard.

your backup from recovery is on your sdcard, that's where mine are.
I make a backup of that to my laptop from time to time just to be safe.

Hi all,
Sot of new to modding, think I screwed up and could use some help. Was doing this one click speed fix: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7587405&postcount=417
It didn't appear to work the first time, as I received a message and exited the application, however the symbol was still in the notification bar. Re-ran it, and it seemed to have worked, mostly, as the phone was blazing fast. Went immediately to run quadrant and check the benchmark, but it force closed every time it hit the i/o section. tried to go to market, foreclose every time. Figured it may need a reboot, powered off, and that's was all she wrote.
I can get into the battery charging screen and have been able to get to recovery, but nothing else. I haven't used adb or ODIN at all yet, but any assistance is greatly appreciated.
The phone was already rooted, and i have titanium back up and nandroid backups, but don't really know how to get to them.
If you did a nandroid backup, just go in recovery screen and restore backup. If not, flash back to stock rom.
well maybe i dont know what im talking about then. I guess I thought i did a nandroid.
When i go into recovery i get four options: reboot system now, reinstall packages, clear all user data, clear cache data.
none of them work
Did you install clock work recovery via Rom manager?
well it has turned on now. removed sim and memory card and hit reinstall packages. ive got the standard twlauncher running but, it repeatedly gives me force close notifications that android.process.media has stopped and i cannot access the menu

yes, i did. i remember doing that precisely as shown in your tips and tricks thread
alright, so i got it into download mode, gonna reflash everything to stock and see where i went wrong as outlined here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Will update with results, but would be nice to figure out where i went wrong so as not to repeat the error.
If you can get into recovery just wipe and reflash eugenes vibrant4.zip.
Alright, back to stock. unrooted also? gonna mess some more and see if i can get my clockword recovery to restore everything.
okay, so my theory is that the lag fix i used installed an update.zip that overwrote the clockword mod one. Now im just trying to restore using titanium backup, but it is telling me that it doesnt have root access. i know im rooted, as i just did it and reinstalled rom manager and drocap. hmmmmm.....
Thats not all thats funny. i cant find the superuser app anywhere on here. also, i cannot install one from the market.
and im having issues with root explorer.

You need to root again to get the superuser on your phone. As for the one click lag fix, I used to original method and it went pretty well. No problems so far. I also flashed Vibrant4 by Eugene before doing the lag fix. Hope it helps
same thing happened to me. I'm stuck on the galaxy S boot screen. i can get into the samsung recovery screen but not the clockwork recovery. I backed up my nandroid and Rom but don't know how to get into the menu to restore. I only have the update.zip for the lag fix on the internal sd so can't restore that way. Any ideas? Much appreciated.

There may be other ways around it, but I restored fully to stock, then re-rooted. I'm back up and running no problem now. Had some issues with titanium backup but got around that and its batch restoring as i type.

I tried wiping and flashing the stock via renaming it update.zip, and I'm still getting FC city. Mostly media, but, calendar, everything. I'm going to post a link to this in that thread, since many, it seems, were left hanging in a boot loop.

The galaxy s seems pretty hard to brick. I'd say just go for the lag fix. Worse thing that happens is you have to take like 15min to download and use odin to reflash to stock. The lag fix seems pretty safe as long as you stay rooted

Vibrant Recovery Mode HowTo
THIS GUIDE WORKED ON USA T-MOBILE SAMSUNG VIBRANT BUT MAY VERY WELL WORK ON ALL SAMSUNG GALAXYS PHONES
After reading many XDA-Developers Forum Posts to try and figure out how to get into the Recovery Mode / Download Mode without any success, I gave T-Mobile Support a call.
After the usual noop run-down, "did you take the battery out" questions, I simply asked them how to get the Samsung Vibrant into recovery mode.
Unline the many tutorials that claim to require the Up or Down button pressed, along with the Home button then the Power, the true process is as follows:
1. Press the Up and the Down button at the same time (yes both). I too thought that button was a Toggle which only did either Up or Down, but found that in fact it does do both.
2. At the same time, press the power button.
3. As soon as the Samsung / Vibrant logo comes up on the screen, release the power button.
4. Release the Up and Down buttons.
5. PRESTO
Hey guys, just sharing this with everyone. Maderschramm over at droidforums and droidxforums has packaged an update zip for 2.3.340. It can be used as an alternative to SBFing or to update you if you haven't already.
Install- Make a backup first
1. Download zip
2. Boot into clockwork recovery
3. Install zip from sd
4. Reboot
5. Activate phone
IMPORTANT
BE SURE TO REBOOT AFTER INSTALLING ZIP. DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE IN CLOCKWORK RECOVERY PRIOR TO REBOOT. YOU WILL BRICK.
You will lose root, but you will also still have all apps and contacts.
Read this thread prior to doing the install. There's some helpful tips from Maderschramm.

good find. I am going to download and store away for a rainy day ota update. I hate sbf and rsdlite. And although I appreciate all that the black hat does - having to do like 20 (exaggeration) installs in clock work makes me a little nervous.
so good on ya mate.
that's why after i SBF 2.3.320 i always go straight into Android recovery before booting up and Factory Reset there, then boot up. But i guess everybody has there own way of doing things.
Ya, this is an easy alternative to get everyone to a clean 2.3.340. If you're on 2.3.15, 2.3.320, or 2.3.340 this will definetly come in handy.
Wonderful. I just left a stock rom literally today and realized I lost corporate email access with Gummy. That is a deal-breaker and obviously I didn't research it well enough before doing it. I NEED to get back to stock regardless of how painful it is. So this will unroot me, just Z4 again afterwards I take it?
Correct it will unroot and remove bootstrap. So after rebooting then use z4 and grab bootstrap again.
Very nice, thank you! Hopefully I never need to use it!

Hopefully we wont need to use it, but at least we will feel better about doing this rather than an SBF.

Reasons for bricking:
Installing zip as an update.zip
Doing anything else in bootstrap after installing zip
Soft brick (factory reset will bring it back)
Thanks This has saved me more than once while working on cracking the bootloader
Hrmm I ran this directly from having Apex and it didnt like it. Seemed to not fully wipe the phone at all. Im guessing I didnt read something all the way. I simply went to clockwork and loaded the file and rebooted. When it came back my system was still intact, but everything was force closing.

Just wondering if anyone who's flashing and rooting could please do a backup and upload it somewhere. Myself and a couple others have accidentally partitioned our internal SD incorrectly causing a catastrophic touch screen issue.
I'm hoping it'll have the properly partitioned SD storage because I'm having difficulty doing it manually. If someone could upload this it'd be hugely appreciated!!!
BUMP!!!
Can anyone please provide me with a Nandroid backup using Tenfar's recovery??? I can throw some money once I get my Paypal sorted out. I'm desperate, fellas!

If you're new it may be too engaging but I appreciate the offer nonetheless. If you could help, it'd be great. If it's too much trouble, I thank you anyway!
yeah what does the nandroid backup...back.. up? the apps?
What I'm HOPING and PRAYING for is that it'll also copy something in the internal SD which was partitioned due to my stupidity. dev/block/mmcblk0p18 is what that is in particular.
I tried manually formatting and partitioning it but I'm unable to do so. Fastboot freezes and Early USB Enumeration goes by so quickly I can't run the commands that I need through ADB. And I don't even know if that'll work because I made a script that executes the commands and I get weird errors. I'm far from an expert and monkeyed around too deeply where I shouldn't have.
About 4-5 others are reporting the same problem. The ****ty thing is that I'm in Canada and it'd be a huge pain to send it to Motorola. They're giving me a lot of grief and I've had to put up a big fight. Waiting to see if they'll send an RMA because I may need to send it in. When I get it back I might sell it and buy a Bell Atrix because I live in Canada and if something bad happens, it'll be easier to send to Bell or Motorola Canada.
from what i understand you have to have an unlocked bootloader to backup or restore using a nandroid backub
Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology then.. just need a backup from Tenfar's customer Recovery. I don't even know if it'll work but I'm out of ideas.
I'm at least thankful that the Xperia X10's bootloader was cracked. I forgot to send a replacement back to Rogers and I phoned them asking if I could use it for now. They thankfully said yes because they forgot to charge me for it lol... it's got some really great ROMs, but looking at this beautiful, mangled Atrix makes baby Jesus cry!

I've already tried the SBF files but it doesn't do anything to the internal SD. I need an actual backup because the user settings are exactly what I'm looking for. Normally you'd want a fresh flash from stock but I hope you now understand why I'm asking this constantly.
Flashing to stock was naturally my first step. Unfortunately it had failed. About 5 others reporting the same problem.

What maybe you could do is? go into tenfars cwm recovery go to mounts and storage and format the internal sdcard and system and boot and data. This is safe as far as I know and me and tenfar have both done this.I literally formatted every single thing in the option menu. just to see if I could do it. Which was stupid but I was curious and used to do that before I installed new roms on my old backflip all the time! Also might wanna do a factory reset through cwm and clear dalvik cahe as well for good measure. Now after you format all that. reboot system which will send you in a boot loop/wont boot past first screen. Pull the battery and unplug usb cable from charger. Then reboot and enter rsdlite mode by holding volume up and the power button. Now just flash your 4.1.26 sbf file through rsdlite 5.0
As long as you flash back to retail 4.1.26 afterwords using rsdlite 5.0 that should put everything right! As I have done this and my phone is working normal.
I better put one of them warnings here though anyway lol

I was not aware of this and was so focused on correcting the challenge that this was a complete oversight. On second thought, I don't want to compromise anyone's security.
I had in mind a fresh backup, preferably for AT&T's 1.2.6 SBF but it's a bit of trouble and a lot of space. I retract my request due to the amount of work involved and that I don't want to compromise anyone's security in case they don't clear their user details, etc.
Thanks for pointing that out, knigitz. I think ADB access in the Recovery is our best bet. Crossing my fingers.

Hey guys, about a week or two ago, I went to a T-Mobile store to upgrade to 2.3.4. I have been looking into rooting and loading CM7, but im not sure how to do it and what is the best way. I was thinking about doing it with ADB, but im just too chicken to try it. I can't afford to break this phone, so i have to be really careful. If you have any other better ideas as to how I could root 2.3.4, that would be awesome. Also, if you have found any way to unbrick it if it gets bricked somehow in the process, that would be great too. I am an experienced hacker, and am working on starting to develop apps for Android and Apple. Thanks guys, I really need your help.
There is no root for 2.3.4 yet

Just in case you all start getting condescending about people not pulling through successful with Ultimate Guide Deluxe. I am not doing it wrong and chances are I know a tad more about this process than you.
There are always chances. On the other hand, chances often lie. Read this:

From post 62 downwards.
Then you can count your chances again, or post here about how you and some others missed the obvious.

Just want to note that that guide is not the solution for all Gingerglaciers. Some devices (mine included) cannot make it past the first step due to 'permission denied'.
Who else is in the waiting line for rootage?

I am. I'm not well versed enough to do the downgrade-via-ADB thing. All I want to do is temproot, freeze the bloatware on the stock 2.3.4. I'm not interested in flashing a ROM or having permanent root. From what I understand, this isn't possible without downgrading.

No, it isn't possible. You have to downgrade and install pre-rooted 2.3.4.
It's not really that hard. You could start by trying to set up ADB, and if you get a working environment - you'll know that you're good to go with the guide.
Sorry to raise a dead thread, but I was just wondering if anyone had come across a 2.3.4 root method. I am trying to root my fiancee's device and seem to be getting nowhere.
Apologies also if this has already been addressed.
Thanks guys =]
The rooting method for 2.3.4 involves downgrading to 2.2.1. That's the way it has been, that's most probably the way it'll stay, for a long time, possibly indefinitely.
how to unbrick t-mobile htc mytouch 4g glacier
guys, i successfully rooted my friend's htc glacier mytouch 4g.i noticed dat the backup failed.then i tried flashing this ROM cm-10.1-20130710-Albinoman887-glacier.zip, it was successfully installed.i now clicked on reboot it just got stock on flash screen.i tried factory reset. but any time i clicked on it it takes me back to recovery mode.please help me.my friend is about to turn me to his enemy.
take out your battery, then out it back in
Hold the volume down button and the power button, select recovery (use the volume keys)
Then when your in there, do a factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik (if your using cwm then go to advanced then wipe dalvik)
Then re-flash the rom.

lol you wanna go back to stock?
Ok then, well look around for the PD15IMG.zip for 2.3.4 then put it on your sd card at the root, and then go into bootloader again.

Rooting is easy and safe i rooted mine last week and i don't brick my baby... Just take a giant step to follow the information carefully and read the pdf it helped me too.. And adb is easy to use just takes time.
