Well the last craze to get updated to Froyo seems as though it may end up being short lived as I came across this today: http://www.androidcodex.com/gingerb...edium=rss&utm_camp aign=gingerbread-is-coming
2 months for a GB release, then we wait for root (which might be very quick) and/or wait for HTC to Sense-ify GB, then we get it on the Evo. Froyo's got a few months left in it - about as long as Eclair had on the Evo.
Or maybe it will live up to the hype and HTC will leave it alone and just push it without a new UI.
Personally, I can't wait for 3.0. I'm really hoping it comes a lot closer to being as nice looking and easy to use as iOS. I came from an iPhone and loved it, but I love Android a little bit more; I don't know why I like it more, but I do, however, the apps are really ****ty when compared to iOS and the UI is pretty rough in some areas - sense or aosp.
Google really needs to step it up and hire some graphic designers that can't code at all.
Whoot Whoot !!!
bring it on Google
Sent from my HTC Evo
that's pretty cool. I wonder where they got their sources from though? I really would like to see what kind of UI google puts on gingerbread though. And of course, whether or not motorola/HTC/samsung will still blur/sense/touchwiz it...

I read from a few places that Gingerbread would do away with 3rd party UI's like Sense. It would have to be pretty fricken sweet to get me away from Froyo Sense. I mean, how much faster could it get?

Moto said blur was pretty much dead -as far as new updates goes- on all of their higher end phones, today.
Where is the source on this article?
very cool, maybe ill finally upgrade from the original htc 2.1 rom to GB when it comes out!
Dang it...I saw no mention of "smoother UI experience". The only thing that really bothers me is how choppy the interface is despite a 1Ghz CPU.

More than 30fps will never be part of the evo, htc has said many times that its a HARDWARE limitation, they lied for a reason. To cover their ass. I dont see them exposing their own lie, ever.

I think the statement was that Google was aiming for UI that was nice enough to DISCOURAGE manufacturers from layering their own environment over the top, which would hopefully save resources.
But read this.

Even if we don't get it from HTC (unlikely) with the dev's we have, I'm sure the evo will run gingerbread one way or another... if the g1 can run froyo... anything can happen

Some dev with port it if anything... I don't see why we wouldn't get it. The phone meets the specs and I don't see them abandoning the EVO so quickly.

Ok so ive had the the fascinate for a few days now. Besides the Viual Voicemail not working properlly, Data problems, The super laggy performance with touchwiz. The problem with the market place saying RETRY over and over....
Time to return it and wait for the palm pre 2. I am hugely disapointed. I love the look and feel of the phone and screen and the hardware capabilities....but damn the OS is garbage!!!!
BTW I dont mind Bing
I agree. The Fascinate seems to be a great phone hardware-wise, but there seems to be a few software shortcomings with the phone.

Honestly? Sheesh, the phone has only been out less than a week, and you're expecting custom ROMs? Patience.
As for the issues, the standard treatment as of now is to root, remove crapware, including Bing and VZ apps, and install the lag fix, which creates a virtual ext2 partition for your app data that gives you warp-speed performance. Oh, and don't forget to install LauncherPro as well. Check the development forum for all the info on these procedures.
I had issues with the network timeouts too at first, but haven't noticed it quite as much lately. Dunno, maybe it will come and go. Hopefully it's a software bug that will be fixed in Froyo. Given the fact that I've seen it happen both on 3G and WiFi, I'm willing to bet it is a software issue.

Yes.
But I don't see why it's needed. The phone performs better than any other phone on the market even using TouchWiz.
I removed all the preinstalled software and replaced TouchWiz with ADW.Launcher. So I essentially have a vanilla 2.1 OS. Took all of 30 minutes to go from opening the box to a vanilla OS.
You buy this phone for the hardware, not the software. Getting this thing 100% will take some work, and can be somewhat advanced, but for most of us getting there is the fun part. That's why Android and open source is great in the first place.
If you just want a shiny toy that has apps and makes calls, go buy an iPhone.

Wow!!!!!!
There are some seriously impatient folks here. I've tried all the Galaxy S phones, both recent droids, and the EVO and Iphone4. In my opinion they are all within a 10% band of difference with the EVO at the bottom and the Galaxy S's and iphone4 at the top. I would still be happy with any of these phones and in the end, I'd customize it to be better than any of the other stock phones. Any customized ROM phone of these would be better than any stock. I've seen some EVO's with Cyno ROM's that make any of the stock Galaxy S ROMS look lacking. If you are on the network you like, stay with a Galaxy, it's the best hardware. Wait for the software.

I think most of you missed the OP's statement at the bottom of his post. "I'll just wait for the Palm Pre."
I don't care how many shortcomings the Fascinate has, in my opinion I haven't had any problems with my phone but I haven't used TouchWhiz at all, but there's no way I would consider Palm a superior operating system over Android.
Google has a free appxs that replace all of Verizon's software, ie google voice instead of visual voicemail.

Wow, just wow.
I was just cruisin thru checking to see what people are thinking of the Fascinate itteration of the Galaxy S.
I have a Vibrant on T-Mo and have a buddy getting a Fascinate today (hence my curiousity).
If you don't like Touch Wiz, download Home++ from the market, or Samsungs CarHome and DeskHome....blam, fresh face on the OS.
Root it....plain and simple, you'll have to sooner or later, so do it now.
For the lackskillzorz type (heh) there is even a one click root with a one click lag fix.
Check the Vibrant threads on this forum, we've had the phone longer so have had a chance to make the aquaintance just a bit more formal :þ

Palm pre's WebOS is absolutely amazing. I would still be using it if it had better hardware. I believe that webOS beats android and iOS. What its lacking is dev support tho. But you want talk about open source, webos is a prime example. (preware) tweak your whole phone from the kernal to clock time without needing root or jailbreak. And funny thing is palm/hp supports the devs. I can understand if he wants to jump ship, he'll just come back anyways. Like I said hardly any dev support. But what he'll gain in the process is the knowledge and understanding of another mobile os and will have a more definite feel to which is better. And personal experience beats a review any day. So go for it man, I don't have a phone for more then 2 weeks, since I work at verizon I can get any phone I want and use it in the intent of keeping it. But the point is my fascinate might just be they phone that will break the 2 week shelf life for me. Your in a good phone. Warranty it out if your having issues.

I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.

The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! This is what HTC said about why the new OTA didn't get a sense update even tho alot of us were pissed about it.
I understand how important it is for you to have the latest software available for your device. We work with Sprint to determine which of their branded HTC devices will receive software updates. If your carrier does not request an update for the device we cannot create or host it. For the most up to date information regarding your carrier’s decision to update the device we recommend contacting them.
HTC cannot disclose any information regarding ROM updates until the carrier approves them. I cannot answer any questions or comments regarding any other company’s or manufacturer’s practices. I can tell you it is an industry standard to provide updates for a device for 18 months after its introduction. “Google has announced a partnership with manufacturers and cellular providers to keep all devices up-to-date in Android OS for an 18 month period from the date of launch. HTC and our native carriers were included in this list.
The one exception would be if a device's hardware does not meet the requirements of the update.” This refers to the base operating platform, Android, not the interface of the device. While we do make HTC Sense, our service providers have the final say on what is included in any update that is created for their branded devices.

So far on the newest ones he has done on his site you don't have to partition your SD card he made it smaller. I haven't done it to mine I ran it last night for a few hours to check it out. The most stable 2.1 is virus Synergy Rom I'm loving it nightly build. I haven't had to partition my SD card for any ROM yet you can if you want to .

Why desperate for 3.0?
I am trying to understand why everyone is so desperate for Sense 3.0. I have run the leaked GB with Sense 3 and it is no great shakes - mostly window dressing with very little added functionality. I went back to a previous version of Sense just because it is simpler and does 99% the same stuff.

I agree with this part. I am not looking at buying for Sense 3.0. I am buying the EVO3D for the updated hardware. Also I am sure that I am not the only one.

I will buy it for the hardware too! The 3D looks great. I was referring to someone else who indicated that the version of sense would be a reason to buy (or not buy) a phone. When in my opinion, later versions of Sense do almost nothing new for the phone.
Just my opinion after using 3.0 for a week or so.

Yeah I was just agreeing with you.

I am trying to understand why everyone is so desperate for Sense 3.0. I have run the leaked GB with Sense 3 and it is no great shakes - mostly window dressing with very little added functionality.

Wait, what???
I'm sorry, but having the Quick Settings in the task bar pull down, the last used apps in there, too, a better lock screen system, better apk management, more options, etc, etc, is NOT just window dressing

No, that's also not exclusively Sense 3.0, which is what he was talking about. that can be seen in Sense 2.1 Which actually runs very nice on the EVO.
I've tried both Virus B1.1.3 (Sense 3.) and MikG 1.01 and 1.02 (Sense 2.1 + 3)
Here is my experience.
Virus's Revolution B1.1 and up REQUIRES SD Partition. flashing the ROM will WIPE THE SD CARD, it states it right on the tutorial. "Back up yo ****, this is deletin' yall!!" (Paraphrasing.)
After doing everything, backing up SD, partitioning card, converting partition, installing ROM. it is VERY pretty, the carousel effect is hypnotizing. But it just wasn't stable enough and wasn't fast enough for my liking. Apps frequently crashed and the Rosie kept needing to restart because it was too big to sit in the Memory. I even did all the tricks to try and keep it from having to do that.
MikG 1.02 is pretty quick, not the fastest ROM I've ever used, but in terms of other Sense roms, it's right up there with the rest of them. Really, the only thing I can see that is missing from the pure Sense 3 variant is the carouselling Homescreen and huge updated Weather widget. the Weather app that opens looks like Sense 3 though, which is odd, because in Virus's it's Sense 1 or 2.
Hey,
I have a samsung epic right now, and I'm interested in buying this evo someone offered to me. I would only be interested, however, if this phone was able to be rooted. How can I check if it is possible or not?

If its running android 2.3.3 and when you load into the bootloader it says "s-on" next to the radio version then its not rootable yet.
Thanks man, really appreciate it.
Also, if it wasnt able to be rooted, I read on the news that HTC was going to release a universal unlocker for the newer phones, will they also release one for the EVO?

The general consensus is that they will not be unlocking older phones so as to encourage consumers to buy the newer ones.
EDIT: There is always of course the possibility that an independent developer will find an exploit and give us the ability to gain root access to our phones. Some devs are known to be working on this now. There's no guarantee of course, but there is hope for those of us who were feeling hopeless.
OK, so the phone has android 2.2, so I automatically assume it can be rooted. Now, can someone recommend me a good rom? I know about cm7 and miui, but what do the devs here have to offer?

I really liked Deck's ROM; lightweight, few issues; great battery life when combined with Tiamat 3.3.7. It's basically CM7 with a lot of the extra clutter (language packs, etc) removed. It looks and acts almost exactly like Android on the Nexus S.
That was my daily driver. I also really liked playing with Synergy; it's feature-packed and has a lot of bells and whistles, and is a fun toy. I didn't like it for daily use, though. I am really into the KISS philosophy when it comes to my smartphone.
And what about kernels? Is there a good choice of kernels to sift through, or for the most part do the roms already come with the best kernel for the job..?

Do alot of reading in the development thread. There is plenty to learn about.

Alright, I'm doing some thinking on whether to do this or not.. .Should I trade my epic 4g for an evo or not?

Well that's a question that is dependent on a few things:
Do you prefer physical or virtual keyboards?
Is the loss of a nicer screen worth a bigger screen?
The Epic could be a great phone if it had the developer support that the Evo had/has.
They don't even have an AOSP ROM.
YES, trade, then load synergy rls1, then freedom kernel, for root use unrevoked,

Yeah, I could get by without a keyboard, but i'm just iffy

My personal opinion is that developer support is what makes the phone.
The Epic has a better core for performance and for battery.
If I recall correctly the GPU is better too.
The screen is nicer.
The keyboard sucks [because I hate physical keyboards]
But the developer support, comparative to the Evo, is nil.
Now, there have been signs of an increase in support but with the SGS2 coming it's hard to say how much will come to the Epic itself.
I actually just came from an epic to the evo since mine was stolen (which really sucked I loved that phone) but with the evo I've never looked back. I really liked the physical keyboard since I'm not a fan of soft keyboards but swype and mods alongside a much larger screen make up for it. Speaking of the screen, its no super amoled but its definitely one of the nicest I've used and and the phone overall is just beautiful. Battery is about the same for both in my experience. But like others have said the evo has MUCH better developer support. I remember I was using frozen syndicate Rom 1.2 before my epic was stolen ( back in end of may/ beginning of June) and they still didn't update I believe. Plus Samsung still hasn't released gingerbread for it and its being discontinued October I think. So all in all you should trade for the evo, definitely much better software support especially for a phone reaching its EOL, not to mention hardware (i.e. cases) Plus sense is just great

Ive had both phones, I had the epic then i traded it for my evo<3 which i love so much. I dont regret trading it at all. Personally, i like the evo more it is greater over all
