need help... - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok... I've been using VISIONary for months to get a temp root, so I can use certain apps (titanium backup, shootme, etc)... few days ago I updated my VISIONary and did the one touch perm-root, then installed superpower and setCPU (like in the battery tricks thread)... everything seemed to be working well, battery life was decent, etc... well, last night... my emails were unable to sync, facebook timed out trying to load, and I couldn't even do my speedtest to see what kind of speeds I was hitting... the HSPA+ notification is still showing up next to my signal strength (4 bars)... not sure if I did something to cause it, or if I got hit with some sort of data cap... any help/hints/suggestions would be appreciated... thanks!

The "My Account" application can tell you how much data you've used during your current billing period. Going beyond 5 GB may indicate a throttling, but you would likely have received an SMS from T-Mobile informing you of the choking.
If a reboot doesn't change behavior, then the most likely cause is a problem external to your phone -- such as your local cell tower losing its wired line connection.

thanks... I rebooted x2, even unrooted using the VISIONary (uninstalled setCPU, superpower)... no change, did a battery pull, fired it back up, no change...
I just re-rooted, DL'ed my apps again, and guess I'll just wait it out...
one of these days I'll do a REAL root, but I like the stock UI/ROM... lol

Just another thought -- try switching to an EDGE connection instead of HSPA+. If I remember the stock OS correctly, you can do this by setting the data connection type to "GSM Only". If the problem is related to a 3G or 3G+ cell tower, perhaps a 2.5G connection will work -- it is different equipment, and might even be on a different cell tower.

JF 1.41 RC33 Problem

I updated my jf 1.41 rc30 to jv 1.4.1 RC33. It updated fine and then i noticed my home button would not work, also my green call button does not bring up "dialer" like it use to but when i access dialer and click the green button over a contact it dials. Any ideas how to fix this?

Did you do a wipe?
no they said it was not necessary
I've ran into that issue a couple times, before I ever started using the modded images, and the only way around it I found was a wipe. To be honest I think the cause of my similar problem was related to the Locale app.
I got this problem too.. I did a reset to factory default and everythiing gone ok.
After upgrading to RC33 i had issues with AnyCut, it would not create a shortcut. didn't matter if i left it in the menu, ont he homescreen or in a folder. I ended up uninstalling it and reinstalling. then it worked fine.
I am thinking a wipe might be in order...just in case other hidden issues arise.
I've got a different problem. I don't have T-Mo signal at my house, so I only use WiFi to access the internet, and UMA on another phone for calls.
Last weekend, (which was the first time I tried to access data on edge or gprs, since updating to JF's ADP 1.41), I noticed I didn't have the E or G data thing next to the signal thing anymore. (We don't have 3G).
Then I tried accessing the weather, and all of my weather programs, as well as maps, market, and the browser said I didn't have a connection.
I didn't have much time to check things out, since we were busy. Today, we went to T-Mo coverage land again, and my data connection didn't work again.
I've checked all my APN's, and they look fine. I also tried changing them to wap, internet2 and internet 3, but no success.
Has anyone else had this problem? (I can send sms and mms, then I see the little data thingy doing it's thing, but that's the only time I see it since rooting). Also, If I call customer care, they will probably try to reset my phone. What will that do to my ADP? Should I tell them I have a Dev phone?
Or has anyone here got any tips for getting data back? (I did a wipe and reapplied the ADP ROM, but that didn't fix anything).

I'm experiencing the same problem now. Did you manage to get it fixed?
I have the same problem switching from wifi back to edge data... the only short term fix i have found to get the mobile net back is send a picture message to yourself. It causes the phone to create the connect and then you should be able to resume using the Edge data...
i was actually coming on here to find a fix for this myself.

Did you recently install any new apps?
I updated my WeatherBug, Steel, Personal Safety, SMS Popup and Discover and installed TetherBlu, TetherWiFi.
I have already uninstalled all of these and tried a reboot. But it didn't work.
I'm starting to panic. I'll try your suggestion.
this was the case right after i installed rc33 there was a thread about the radio that i had been posting on. Thinking my radio update made it so i could not get on market etc... but this was the work around i found for this problem. From the sounds of the other user who said he doesn't have TMo reception near his house. this radio was probably not meant for the non-3g users or there is something wrong with the default connect on the radio...

I've contacted Tmobile and it seems there is a severe network outage for 3G services that is also effecting some Edge networks as well. I've posted info on the site but people continue to post that they are having issues with data on their G1. They told me that it seems to be only on the west coast (west of the Mississippi) and the Tier 3 was being flooded by calls until 6am EST (for the customer service department to open). The network went down around 10pm PST and it is still pending. It's a good thing I decided to call first before reflashing!
Right but in rc33 it doesn't smoothly resume mobile edge from wifi. thats where i told the user if you send a test pic to yourself it will make the connection. Who knows about your network outtages...

Hmmm... I've never had issues resuming an edge network after a wifi connection. I use wifi at home because INSIDE I don't get 3G. Outside (for some reason) I get full strength 3G connection at around 400kb/s. So when I wonder outside to check the mail while I'm downloading a new theme update it doesn't miss a beat for me. I lose contact with my weak a** wifi and jump right on 3G. No download error or anything. As for Edge... not sure. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
this was posted somewhere before...
cant remember where..
solution is to install anycut.
make a shortcut on the main screen, choose the shortcut to be "setup wizard"
this forces the phone to go thru the initial setup again..
most reported that after going thru this process again, home button works after that...
hope it works for u.

Applications, 1x Web and Cricket

Hello everyone, so I have a few questions, but let me provide some background information. I flashed my Vogue to Cricket about a month or two ago and am running one of NFSFans 6.5 roms. I was just scrolling through a few of the already preloaded applications on there and decided to try Facebook. I had previously tried it, knowing it wouldn't work since Crickets proxy doesn't allow it. So I tried it last night either way and to my surprise it worked perfectly!
I decided to try out all the other apps and was even able to install about three from the Marketplace. For some reason though even when I have a 3G signal, it connects to 1X so it's slow, but everything works. I'm also not running proxycap or anything of the sort.
My questions are, how did the apps end up working? and is there a way to get the 3G signal?
Thanks in advance!

It should switch between 1x and 3g by itself (as long as you have coverage where you are). As to why they work, it could be the provisioning cabs, but there is a big chance that Cricket unblocked the proxy considering that these apps are hugely popular nowadays... this last part is only an assumption. More than likely, there is something that changed in your connection settings that is allowing these apps to go online.
I hope this helps.
I checked my data settings and noticed everything that had cricket reverted back to Alltel but that never gave me any problems connecting to web? Was that because it was connecting to 1X and not the 3G line?
Also I loaded a different PRL and that gave me my 3G signal, and for the first few bits it'll be pretty quick, then i'll end up getting about 5 or so kb/s?

Maybe your signal dropped a bit and that's why your connection slowed down.

[Q] Epic Won't Connect to 4G

Here's teh scoop...
I was in Vegas at CES and all was fine. I was tethering and 4G was blazing. Left on Friday, got back to SoCal and on Monday my Epic running Bonzai4All (RFS) would no longer connect to the 4G network. Found out from Sprint there was a trouble ticket in my area and 4G was down for a couple days. It's back up now but my phone won't connect anymore. Took it to a corp repair store (after having flashed back to stock of course) but they couldn't fix it so they ordered me a "new" one.
I don't think it's a hardware issue because when I click the 4G icon the phone cycles through SCANNING>CONNECTING>OBTAINING IP ADDRESS and then it just disconnects. Feels more like a programming issue (ie, dialer codes... then some numeric setting somewhere in the programming menu)
Has anyone else had this happen to them. I did nothing to my phone between the time I was in Vegas and back in SoCal so other than the outage, the phone no longer connecting to 4G seems quite random.
4G is noG
I have the epic4g, I live in Vegas.
Although this is supposed to be 4G for the entire city, the phone spends 95% of the time "disconnected" from 4G.
I have already had sprint replace the phone, the same thing happens with the new phone.
It seems its a software issue, if I turn on 4G and move, do anything, it will disconnect. Heck, it even disconnected in the parking lot outside the Sprint store. Of course they kept telling me there was nothing wrong with the phone when they test, so I go outside, try to connect to sprint.com, get error of no connection and bring phone back in.
On a recent trip, I attempted to use 4G to rent a movie for my son. In the course of 30 minutes, it must have disconnected once every 1-2 minutes. It does not reconnect on its own, you have to manually disconnect, then reconnect to get it running again. It appears if you are "mobile", it has major issues. If you are sitting in one place (not walking or anything) it will keep its connection.
Kind of retarded if you ask me - I know 100% its a phone issue, something is messed up. Of course, when I complain to Sprint, I am the only one having this issue.
I am actually going to try to get them to credit me the 10 bucks a month back, after all, I never use 4G - not because I dont want to, its just not worth the hassle. I cannot even browse the web - it disconnects so often I get the no connection error screen. 3G has no issues, but is slow.
I have searched many forums, but cannot find any fixes for this issue. It would appear that you are having the same deal as I am now.
No idea. My phones locked on 4g 80% of the time. While driving, walking etc. Only use 3g in buildings made of kryptonite that block signals.

I live right outside of Baltimore, and according to sprints coverage maps I should have 4g where i live. We all know how coverage maps go, but i am getting the "obtaining ip address" then fail. But I just kind of ignored it and thought nothing of it.
After seeing other people with similar problems, do you think i should have it serviced? i am paying for insurance.
Did anybody figure this out?
This happened to me after flashing a new rom, seemed to work after a reboot.
i have the same problem, and a simple reboot did NOT my problem.
I know for a fact that I get reception in my house, and I've tried in a Sprint Store when I was testing the Photon 4G. Still can't connect; more specifically it disconnects after attempting to obtain an IP address.
I have already tried messing the WiMAX Extension settings in ##3282#
I'm running SyndicateROM Frozen 1.2 | Genocide 2.0 Kernal | EC05 Modem.
Note: 4G was working before i tested UrbanDecay, which was a EG22 ROM. I did flash SRF1.2 with the EG22 installed. i have tried updating the modem and I'm back to EC05. still no luck.
Suggestions?
This happened to me. Some type of data corruption. I had to Odin back to a prerooted tar, not restore anything, test 4G, working then only restored apps with no data. When I did restore data I lost 4G again. So do not restore any data. Set everything back up again.

Yeah I tried everything first, even had Sprint refresh my phone. I guess some WiMax files got corrupted. You could try a reflash but if your ROM backs up and restores data it probably will still not work. I was able to restore apps only and selectively restore a few apps with Titanium though.

[Q] Syncing/Push notifications on 4G?

Hey everyone!
So I am a little new when it comes to the issue of WiMax 4G.. I'm in Orlando, which has 4G, and I am able to successfully able to connect with the 4G radio (though I do find myself dropping from 4G to 3G depending on the area I'm in).
When I am sitting at my desk at work, I can send myself an e-mail to my google account and not receive the push notification that it had arrived. I've been testing this over the past couple days and noticed that when I would pick up my phone (still connected to 4G, by the way, though there are no "bars") and load up some application that polls for data, such as Facebook, the sync would then occur and I would get the notification.
So my question is this: Is this the expected behavior of the 4G radio? Does it sit in an "idle" state when not being used, which would then restrict it from receiving push notifications? I did disable 4G at my office and the data connection seems more reliable (push notifications are immediate).
I've had this phone for only three days, so I'm giving it a couple weeks to see if I might need to exchange the phone, but I figured I'd see if anyone more knowledgeable than myself could shed some light on things.
Thanks!
- Andy
from what I know if you are bouncing back and forth from 4g to 3g then in that part of the area you have very weak 4g signal and better off just sticking to 3g in that part of the building. it could be that since its bouncng back and forth that its not pulling the data automatically like it should.
[UPDATE]
I'm resurrecting my own thread, because after another week of testing on multiple devices (total 2 Shifts and a 2 Epics), I'm ready to make the following statement:
Sprint Android 4G phones do not reliably push using their WiMax radios.
I've tested this in several different ways, with both my Shift and my buddy's (rooted 2.2) Epic. My actual test went something like this:
- Find a place with at least one "bar" of 4G (listed as fair, though this is repeatable outdoors as well, just easier to do next to the computer)
- With 4G OFF, send myself a message to my GMail account. The notification happens on the PC instantly, and anywhere from 1-20 seconds later on the shift.
- Turn on 4G radio. Send another e-mail to the GMail account. This time, no notification hits the phone (I waited at least a minute before continuing to the next step).
- Run Speed Test (I contacted the helpful HTC support desk, who actually told me that I might be on 3G even though I see the little 4G radio icon). This last run I register 3.6Mbps down and about 1Mpbs up. That's not 3G. At this point in the test, I received my e-mail notification once in the 10 or so times I tried this. The other nine times I STILL had not received my notification.
- At this point, if I wanted to see the message, I either switch off 4G or manually refresh the GMail application.
Note that this test was repeatable on my phone on GTalk, Voice, and the new Android Market (downloading apps from PC) as well. The Epic only did this test twice; once indoors with GMail and once outdoors with GMail, but I imagine the other push applications would behave exactly the same way.
I wanted to be ABSOLUTELY sure about this before bringing this thread back, but now that I am, here's the question: Anyone with 4G coverage, can you repeat these findings, and is this the intended functionality of the 4G radio?
Sprint tech support (who I also contacted) indicated to me that I should be able to push on 4G, as did HTC, so maybe I'm missing something here. In any case, I figured this was the best place to ask.
- Andy
Just did some testing for you. Disconnect 3G, wireless and only enabled 4G. Sent an email from my exchange server to myself and it pushed to the phone in a couple of seconds. I replied from the phone and it was in my outlook again in a few seconds.
So at least 4G and exchange work fine.

I wish I had an exchange server I could have tested with as well. As I mentioned, I used only GMail, GTalk, Google Voice, and Market. Among the things I looked at was the field labeled "Standby Time" in the WiMax section in ##DATA#. I haven't messed with it (default 10 minutes), but if you're willing, can you set to 4G, wait this timeout interval, and attempt your test again? I'm trying to put the puzzle pieces together.
Also, I haven't entirely ruled out either my device or my area, yet I do think it strange I can repeat this with another device simultaneously, with both having 4G signal.

Same result. Also GMail is notifying just fine though not as fast as exchange, but still less than a minute. Have you tried turning off mobile network (3G)? Then you'll know you're only on 4G for sure. You can add the widget under widgets >> settings >> mobile network.

Thanks for checking into that for me. I will try disabling 3G at work tomorrow (I would do it from home, but I typically don't get 4G where I live). Also just verifying, you were testing with 3G on as well, or only off? One of the things I was theorizing was that push notifications were being "handled" by the 3G radio, but since 4G was on, they weren't being processed until that radio was reactivated.
In either case, I have something else to test, so thanks again!

the way I did it was to have only 3G on, do the tests, turn 4G on, do the tests, turn 3G off, do the tests, leave phone alone on 4G and let it be (items still notified).
Glad to help.

[Q] Any tips to improve connectivity?

Even on MJ7, my Wifi and LTE connections are unreliable. This is really my only issue with this phone now, and it is very frustrating. I'm showing a pretty consistent 3 bars/-95 dBm, and though calls and texts work great, I get awful data performance. I never had this issue with my last phone on Verizon (Galaxy Nexus). On the wifi front, it just randomly dies, even just a few feet from the router. I'm not convinced that a replacement phone is going to help matters...
Any ideas? I'm about to the point of ditching this phone for a different model...
same thing here. WiFi sucks, even with a strong signal I.e. in the same room as the router. I'm not noticing it as much on LTE, but then again I'm not using that as much anyways. Even as I am making this post, the "WiFi connection is unstable" just popped up, with a full signal showing on WiFi.
I also have same problem. Wifi unstable issue happens when my note 3 have no reception. Some post says delete cache from recovery but didn't helped for me. Some post says if you have adaway then you will have similar problem. Also turning off Auto network switch option from Wifi Advenced option will help too.
But none of above worked for me

The culprit for me was AdblockPlus. After uninstalling, all "Internet connection is unstable" messages went away. I am now using Adaway with no problems.
On a hardware level, the best i can think of is to add one of those sticky antenna boosters on back of battery cover but didn't try it yet
On a software level, i imagine that there must be some android equivalent to increase the tx power of the antenna, but not sure how
Hopefully someone can chime in with something concrete since many of us are having weak data coverage in major cities
This might be a contributing factor to our slow LTE speeds: Verizon's CFO admitted that VZW's LTE network in big cities is "strained". I guess the good news is that it should get better by 2015...
Certainly if you're not in a large city this may not apply to you. I'm in San Francisco most of the day and I can confirm that LTE speeds here are ridiculously low, even with a strong connection I am lucky to get 6-7 mbps download and around 500 kbps upload.
I went to the Verizon store last night, and the guy said to call 611 and report the LTE issue. I'll try that today.
The Wifi issue is super frustrating. I'll be in the middle of the most mundane things, and the connection just drops, making me wait a minute or so while it reconnects.

I'm not even in a major city. I'm getting speeds like 0.10 mbps where I work, completely awful. I'm leaving Verizon altogether if they can't do better than that. I know that this spot is not the norm, but it's my workplace. If I need it to work reliably somewhere, it's here.
MJ7 seems to have given me poor connection all the way around. Why verizon put on "improved connectivity" on their OTA is beyond me. Its worse if anything. Most of the time in my workplace I cant even update an app because the DL time is like 10 minutes for a 3mb app. Thats with 3 bars on 3g. Forget about a 4g connection in this building. However...my coworker on ATT has strong 4g even in this building.
Wifi is crap. It will be full connectivity and the in/out arrows lit....STILL freezes on loading pages and stuff. It would appear I have a strong fully connected working wifi signal but it just hangs there and pauses for like 1-2 minutes before even loading a webpage sometimes. Its becoming an extremely frequent event actually. Starting to really bother me. I never had any of those issues on MI9. These folks need to stop worrying about trying to patch up root with updates and causing other problems. Especially since the vast majority of users on their network are NOT rooted.
people dont root to steal from vzw anyway...or take advantage of services most of the time its just to customize their phone...and delete bloatware.
I dont see why they have such an agenda against root. Stupid.
Called Verizon, and they "reset my connection," and asked me to reboot. No change. The guy said the next step is a replacement phone. I doubt it will help, but I suppose if that's what they wanna do, I'll do it :/ I'll keep requesting replacements until they find a real solution...
EDIT: Called again. They put in a "trouble ticket" for the area. Let's see if it helps!
Was on MI9 stock rooted. I ODIN'd the MJ7 modem this morning cuz I couldn't stand my WiFi dropping off any time it wanted. Since then, my WiFi has been pretty stable. No complaints on LTE since I only tried this on a flashed phone (ie no LTE in the first place).
I spoke too soon. WiFi is still dropping off frequently.

For those with LTE issues you might try turning on airplane mode to shut off all of your radios and then turn off airplane mode. I have had to do this many times on my Razr Maxx to reset the 4g radios when it gets stuck on 3g.
Things I've done to try to fix my WiFi disconnect issues:
1) Turn off WiFi power save feature via service menu.
2) Wiped cache and Dalvik cache.
3) Upgrade radio to MJ7 (ROM is Hyperdrive based on MJ7).
4) Changed from DHCP to static IP (as suggested by Samsung via online chat).
5) Turn off Auto network switch.
My very last option...which I've already done...contact Samsung for repair. I'm shipping it back for service.
Now I just need to find a fully stock ROM to ODIN first before shipping.
