I've gone back to 2.1 on my Streak and loving it! Didn't realise how much I had missed the custom notification bar.
If only it could be ported to 2.2
I like the dell notification bars well. Wonder if it could be ported to a 2.2 rom.

so i'm really curious now that everyone has been talking about the release OTA of the 2.1 espresso for the my touch 3G, how is this gonna work? i mean rooting the G1 and putting the espresso rom made my phone really slow is this gonna be a problem with the my touch? is it gonna be release anytime soon?? im very impatient
Since the source was released I thought we would see a lot more development in aosp 2.1 roms. A lot of the devs are working on 2.2 but they are still missing a lot of features. Id kill for a fully functional 2.1 aosp rom with out sense.
Anyone else feel this way?
I wouldn't mind seeing it ported either. I used the darch port for the hero, before I retired it for the Evo. Loved it.

I would love this too. Froyo is great, but I'd rather have something fully functional in AOSP. (No, if it doesn't have a working camera, it's not fully functional. Close, but no)
At least 2.1 would be good until Froyo could be perfected. I was happy with 2.1 on the hero.
I'm on the same boat as you guys, until Group is 100% I'd like to see this happen.

I think that this is what the CyanogenMod is supposed to do when it is released.
has anyone heard any more speculation on what phones are gonna get gingerbread?
gingerbread is being skipped and is going to be 2.4 instead of 2.3. Still named gingerbread though. This is what I heard a few weeks back. It makes sense because the Nexus S is full of problems and it's mostly on the software side. Gingerbread is nothing but a themed froyo.
There are a lot less core differences between 2.2 and 2.3 than there were between 2.1 and 2.2. I would think the manufacturers would have an easier time upgrading them and the crapware on it.

Incorrect. There are other phones getting Android 2.3 besides the Nexus S; the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is, for example. Gingerbread has made quite a few changes to the underlying code & add many nice APIs for app developers to it.

True, but, don't know if you noticed that the Nexus One has yet to get an OTA Gingerbread OTA. There's a reason for that. The random rebooting issue could be to blame - but Google for Froyo (such a huge, huge change from 2.1 Eclair) pushed it out to Nexus One users like 2 weeks after announcing it. Huge. Quick.
Gingerbread will probably not come to existing devices. 2.4 (whether it is Ice Cream Sandwich or Gingerbread - who knows/cares) will probably be pushed out first. Don't expect any incremental updates to any existing device yet.
The reason the Xperia Play has 2.3 is because it's out in the AOSP and Sony Ericsson is just choosing to deploy the 2.3 code instead of 2.2. They have the right timeframe and want their device to appeal to the hardcore geeks.
Anyhow, no Gingerbread - especially not for the EVO 4G Shift anytime soon.
I'm hoping for updates to the Shift, i just got it, but i hate knowing there is a newer version somewhere lol
I hate knowing that I got gingerbread working on a 4 year old Windows Mobile phone (HTC Touch/Vogue) and yet it's not officially available for the Evo Shift. I may go AOSP in the future.

AOSP is default open source Android. Every manufacturer puts on their own overlay for HTC it is Sense and Motorola is Moto Blur. When you put an AOSP ROM on your phone it will be default android which is normally more efficient and more bare bones. For instance when you might not have all the functionality that you had with your stock setup. Personally I like how in Sense when I have my Google contacts set up in groups Sense se that and carries those groups over to my phone. When I put the evervolve or CM7 on my phone to test it out I lost that.
I don't know all the things that are different with an AOSP ROM but here are the things I have seen:
Contacts
Messaging app
Home Screen
Now I know there are more programs that are operate in the background that are included (just run titanium backup and look at all the ones that start with HTC) but I don't know what they do for the most part.
Also AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project.
I think I'll wait for a stable sense ROM to try gingerbread. I'm pretty sure I tried a bare bones ROM when I rooted my cliq and didn't like it. Definitely like having everything sync'd like contacts and such. Has anyone come up with something spectacular for a modded or themed stock ROM? Guess I could just go look...
Thanks everyone for the help. Really appreciate it.

So we have been blessed with android for almost 3 years now. Out of all the different treats Google has cooked up for us which one has been your favorite and why? For me its kind of a hard question to answer straight forward. A few of you may say this question seems irrelevant but I have a feeling some of the answers may surprise you.
Cupcake/doughnut was my first experience and brought us by far the best battery life.
Eclair kind of began to bring some much needed aesthetics to android.
Froyo gave us the glorious flash!!!!
Gingerbread.... still trying to figure out the point of that update, or at least why its a different version name
Honeycomb could have been the ****, but imho was rushed out way to soon.
I really liked eclair on the Droid
wheres the option for windows mobile. haha just kidding
Froyo
I started with Froyo as my first Android OS and I loved it coming from Blackberry. Well since GB came out I figured I would give it a try since i've heard alot of good things about it... I've tried it a couple of times now but in the end I always go back to Froyo (mysense).. I know alot of people say it's heavy and slow but the setup I've got thanks to the Royal team it seems no slower than any GB rom i've tried... I like GB ok, if i do decide to stick with GB as my daily driver it will probably be Royal Ginger I really like what they've done with that one...
I have to say that my favorite variant of Android is 2.3 AOSP. B L A Z I N G fast and really slim. Just gets the job done without all of the fluff and puff that others bring.
iOS is nice. I own an iPod Touch. But for a daily driver i cannot live without my Android.
I switched from blackberry and might switch back if they ever make a powerhouse phone withstand he big form factor....the bold touch that should be out soon might be it....I love android....but I love my bold's keyboard even more
MT4G + Royal MIUI + Faux's BFS LV kernel
Eclair was a HUGE improvement over 1.x. Froyo was a big improvement over Eclair. Gingerbread didn't bring significant improvements over Froyo for me that are worth dumping stable Froyo pure Sense (DHD) for funky Gingerbread Sense ports with problems. I want to be able to record videos. So, I guess it's Froyo for me.
Froyo runs the best on my phone
I like stock Froyo on the Droid Incredible 2
I had installed gingerbread on my myTouch 4G and now I have the G2x, and I must say, I miss gingerbread!
I have faux123's aosp gingerbread, its my daily driver as its fast and bloat free.

+ 1 here, CM Nexus Gingerbread by faux123 is a great clean rom.
I am having trouble picking a rom I am happy with. I seem to be torn between a couple sense 1.0 based roms and a couple ICS roms. I like Tommys classic, impatiently waiting for his next release. I also enjoy Swagged out stocks rom. Those are great roms and they are what I am used to and what I know.
But we got all these cool new ICS roms that have all the flashy goodness. I am liking mazda's dark and light and swiperrats MIUI ICS.
Whats everybody else rocking right now? Which of these 4 would you choose and why?

Gummy worms is by far the best ICS I've used because everything works, and works well including panorama. Personally I've been using Mango Chicken 7 which is windows phone themed and I love it. I'm sticking with it waiting for the major update.
Or instead of those sense 1 roms Mikg is not bad and has a little more options (I like landscape view too)
And gummy rocks my socks too ics wise ;-)
