I'm only sharing this to give those with intermittent 3G data to improve theirs as well since I had such good success with it. I know it's strange, and if you don't have any issues with your 3G signal quality than there is no purpose in trying this.
To those of you who have done the hardware GPS fix, this is very similar.
There is another metal tab on the opposite side of the phone, it looks exactly like the one you bend up for the GPS fix.
I was having very spotty and slow 3G covereage, so was my fiance. It would just hang when trying to load websites or using the XDA app. The download arrow would take FOREVER before finally lighting up and going somewhere.
So I opened the phones and bent up that other metal tab, assuming it is the antenna for the phone. I have found out, apparently, it is the WiFi contact. But strangely enough, this has had a huge impact on my 3G consistency.
DarkSandz93 said he noticed two more tabs near the bottom of the phone. You might also bend those a bit to make a better contact. I don't have any pictures of them but With some looking you should find them. I can confirm this fix works without bending the ones on the bottom, but it Wouldn't hurt to try as it will only improve the weak contacts.
When I put the phone back together me and my Fiance's phone both have great consistent 3G and reception went up a bar or two.
I've been testing this for two days and it has definitely helped!
***PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN BENDING UP THE TAB, IT MAY BE FRAGILE*** Take it slow, Its almost flat when you start but you need to bend it up a bit to make a good contact with the antenna.

Here is a video of my phone browsing AFTER the mod was performed. Before I could barely surf at all, it would take around 5 minutes to load ANY web page. The download arrow would hardly ever light up. These pages are not cached and are using my 3G connection.
I just want to clarify this fix did not improve my actual download speed (kb/s), but made my connection more reliable and steady. Fixed the hanging and having to reload constantly to try and get a connection.
Also, thank you Plato56, who came up with the original Hardware GPS Fix. I would not have ever tried this if it wasn't for KWKSLVR's thread.
UPDATED: I've tried this in many different areas now and it works great. No more waiting on the download arrow to light up.. kicks on and stays on

I Thought that was the wifi contact and the cell antenna was on the bottom of the phone.
In any case.. I'll prolly give this a shot since the GPS fix worked so well for me. Instead of trying to bend it up though I think Ill follow the lead of some people in the GPS thread and place a small piece of rubberband under the contact. Dont wana have to solder due to breaking the contract a second time lol.
You might be right. I wasn't 100 percent sure it was the antenna. But In any case it definitely improved my signal quality on two seperate phones.

Haha yeah that's real. I took that picture I think in 08. That storm produced a tornado that killed a few boyscouts near Omaha nebraska. I was driving to visit a friend in Omaha and I got hit with 80 mph winds while in my car! It was nuts.

I can confirm this, when i did the hardware fix i noticed 2 of the same tabs at the bottom and the one on the left that the OP is talking about so i decided to bend ALL of them up and voila getting pretty good signal ever since

man i want to try this because i don't have 3g at my place when i'm holding the phone on the bottom. I'm just scared, really scared.
Alright I just tried the hardware fix and I can report that it has not improved my 3g connection dramatically. I'm not sure if I'm under placebo effect but I think it is helping a tiny bit with keeping the connection strong; could be wrong. Report back after some more testing.
I just want to clarify this fix did not improve my actual speed, but made my connection more reliable and steady. before I could barely browse, now i can very consistently go from page to page with no hanging or having to reload many times.
yupp...so the unthinkable ,while having a very heated discussion with girlfriend on instant messenger via computer ,i broke the little copper contact ,,,,
if your as dumb as me (argueing with girlfriend )while bending the little tabs, all hope is not lost i stripped some copper wire out of a phone cord and looped it through the little hole where the copper is attached to the phone twisted it together tight snapped the phone together and did some intense browsing ,seems to be working great
Unless you're using wifi this shouldnt do anything. The tab you are bending is used for wifi only. The tab that is used for cellular is on the bottom.
I tried this, and now my phone is out of commission. Might be a coincidence since I have been doing some modem changes but any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. I posted in the Vibrant Q&A forum:

If everything is in place inside the phone and its just the screen you can get it into odin (Plug in USB and hold volume buttons while booting.) and then flash back to stock and warranty the thing. You dont even need to see the screen to do it, your computer should tell you if the phone is connected.

I did this too sometime last month and saw an improvement. I decided to take it a step farther like the a couple guys did in the GPS thread did. All 4 of the contacts now have a small drop of solder on them, filed down to the right height, and I am seeing improvements across the board (nothing dramatic, but more of consistency). I need to file 1 down just a hair more though.

The Vibrant I have does not seem to be solidly built. Whenever I press on the sides or back cover, it makes a crunch like sound and it seems like its loose and does not have a solid feel. Anyone else's Vibrant having the same problem? I am thinking about exchanging for a new one but want to be sure its not a common problem. Thanks in advance.

the only noise i hear is from the usb slide thing it sounds a little loose but i can deal with that
Mine doesn't do that... I would take it back for a replacement if I were you.
Mine doesn't make a sound either.
Mine feels very sturdy and solid no noises, I like it my only concern is the way the back plate comes off. It is like the evo pops off instead of sliding. Maybe that is why they give you a spare back plate.

ok actually just realized its the volume up and down button making all the noise... but its not that bad i can deal with it, its not like im gonna shake my phone up and down all day

There isn't anything wrong with your phone, no need to return it. Mine makes all the "crunches" and such too if you squeeze around the edges of the phone. I don't think there is anything wrong with your phone, it's just the plastic very slightly flexing and rubbing on itself. All the Vibrants I have played with in the last few days have been the same. In particular it's the shiny grey rim around the phone that is the culprit. I don't think most of the people commenting here are quite aware of what your concerns are and haven't properly squeezed that grey border correctly to produce the sounds.
If you are still suspecting it, just go compare it with one of the floor models at your local t-mobile.
Yes it is the shiny piece around the phone. I'll try out the other floor models to see tomorrow. It just seems worse on the one I have.

That would take away the loose hinge problem, aint im right.
Then a thought about the magnetic, how will that screw up the gps, compass, the lcd screen or something else.

It would take away the problem. And an accurate compass.
And perhaps the screen.
The only other thing would be velcro. And screw that!
Any other ideas, the compass i can live without...
The screen is just a little harder to live without.
As DanWilson says, maybe very weak velcro will do the trick.

I realise that different handsets suffer more or less from the hinge 'problem', mine seems to be fairly average and does open half way if you pick it not touching the bottom half. But for me I have to hold it in such an awkward way that I usually drop it before or when the hinge flops open.
I find that if I hold the phone in a normal grip with thumb on left side and fingers on the right theres no way it can come open no matter what angle you hold it at?
Is the hinge open itself? U cannot write sms/email in bed or it's just a little loose. I do not see how hinge can prevent normal usage of phone.
BTW. It's not a issue it's by design!
I have been saying magnetic tape is the solution for weeks now!
My Z's hinge is fine at the moment so I am not best to try it out but if anyone does please report back, although I cannot see how it won't work.

This has to be the biggest non-issue I've ever seen when it comes to cell phone design. I have seen the videos online and I have reproduced the "issue" on my DZ, but as D3LTA9 said earlier, I have to hold it so awkwardly and gingerly that I end up dropping it before the hinge opens.
If your fingers are more than 1/8" wide, you will not hold your phone like this in any real-life, practical operation of the phone.

Was just about the wrte the same.. i have a loose "hinge" but no problem..
so i ask "What Hinge Issue ???"
This was born out of people expecting something from the phone that it was not designed to do, with the way the hinge is designed it is always going to fall back on itself in certain situations, it doesn't lock into place and is not meant to.
Sure some are looser than others but its still not an issue, if you don't like it don't moan and try a replacement you need a different phone, get a milestone 2 or something.
Well, got my Z. Yes, it's loose, but I don't care, because opening and closing is very good and I don't use my phone like that, that keyboard would drop...
I'm sure mine is faulty, it just doesn't stay open when I'm trying to txt whilst doing a headstand!!
No,... seriously, mine is loose, doesn't take much effort to open or close, and it does shut itself if I open it and try to hold it face down horizontal... but I never need to use it in that position. Even in bed, if I'm lying on my back, there is always at least a 90 degree angle, maybe upto 140 degrees as the viewing angles are so nice.
My personal preference,... I would like it slight little bit tighter,... but saying that, then I wouldn't be able to open it with one finger???.... so actually,.... as it is is fine.

Has anyone here done the "magnetic tape" trick to fix their loose hinge? Mine is starting to get loose, but I don't think it's much of a problem even though I keep opening/closing it to see how loose it might be.
This was actually discussed and attempted sometime ago. The guy who did it said it worked great and he didn't have any issues with the compass/GPS. As far as I know, he was the only one who tried though (before the thread got locked due to immature and off-topic posts). Some pics of his mod are on this page:

Another solution is actually taking the hinge apart and messing with the spring inside. This has been successful for a lot of people (myself included).

So an irresponsible night of heavy drinking and dancing led to my phone making a crashing debut on the dance floor. I lost my battery cover, and I figured that's why my reception became so horrible and couldn't get data ANYWHERE.
I got a new cover, and still I get horrible reception. SMS won't work sometimes, I drop calls like made and data is terribly slow (Edge) if it even works at all. Sometimes 3g, gprs, or hpsda (is that right?) will work but only when I'm really close to a cell tower.
Anyone know wtf i did?

Yes... purely on speculation you broke one of the two brass clips that make attachment to the radio antenna on the rear case.
Nothing a quick look inside can't fix...

Turns out due to the soft case, i one of the antenna tabs was bend down. Bent it back and voila!

hmm, my gps stopped working a few mths ago when i dropped it, , , hope my repair goes as well as yours! (when i get around to buying a new screen)
As I was walking my nexus 7 slipped out of my hand and fell on the floor. A couple of minutes later I tried to turn on WiFi, but it couldn't get a strong signal. However if I'm close to the router it connects. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
You probably only need to pop the back off, make sure it's not full of grit and fluff, and put it back on again.
Just run your thumbnail around under the back bezel, starting from the middle of a long edge - knives or screwdrivers won't do the plastic any good. Try to avoid touching components and contacts once you have it open. Static won't do the components any good, and fingerprints aren't great on spring contacts.
The cover will easily clip back on with gentle pressure at the edges.

Well.. I'll try to explain it. It's rather simple. When you see the nexus 7 without its lid, search for the two little gold raised up thingies that connect with two little plates on the inside of the lid itself. I just raised them a little bit with my finger so that they could have better contact with the plates. Then just close it and voila. Im sorry for not being all technical with you xD

Interesting. Do any of these spring contacts have anything to do with wifi signal strength?
I own 2 first gen nexus7 stock kitkat never rooted... Both suffer from wifi authorization issues and signal drops..
I just grabed one after reading this, its wifi as usual was not connected. I popped the back off and adjusted all the contact springs. I think there was 6 or 8 of them.. Anyway i got wifi connection right away.. A fluke? Or do any of these springs and the back cover effect wifi?

Sorry for this late reply. When I fiddled around with it there were only 2 springs.. :/
No . Problem either way my problem came back.
The fix came from setting up a different security option on the router.

So I just installed a few games on my Nexus 4 this evening and noticed some areas of the screen not responding. Its isolated to about a 1cm from the left on my screen. When I enable the "show touches" option under developer options I can see the ball jump when I move my finger over the area. Whats odd is that the very edge reports OK and I can swipe to Google Now without issue.
I was using PA with Franco and just as a test revered to stock and it seemed to work however after about 5 mins it went back to the same behaviour. Once again I installed my stock nandroid and now its just jumping like it was. So confused!
I guess some software is running and causing issue or the screen is over sensitive in that area me touching it is causing issue. Its worth noting that I changed the screen a few days ago so it could be the connectors but could it be isolated due to a connection?

Ok so I was able to use the old screen (cracked) in a frankenstein fashion and it works 100% of the time. The current seen seems to work for a while and then goes back to missing that area.
Will try and return for a replacement.

Update 3
So the issue has progressed to being intermittent. It will be broken for a few hours, then work OK for a few. This can happen at random,so, not plugged in as I suspect heat was an issue. I can get a text, its broken, pocket the phone and in 5 mins when I get the reply it can be working again.
Ive made a video of what its doing, notice the white dot "jump" when compared to the right.

You need a different screen if you want to fix it.

Check that the flex cable isn't damaged, dirty or loose before you bother with a replacement. Either way, you probably need a replacement screen

Yea I took it all apart and while the new one was connected I was able to connect the old one, upside down etc. It worked OK. Did a bit of a blow and properly pressing down on the connectors.
I could accept the screen is at fault at return it but when the issue is not 100% of the time I know my luck will be that when it gets tested at the sellers end it will work, get sent back to me and be broken again.
Have some monitoring apps running now so I can tell of its heat. Since this side is away from the battery im less incluined to think its heat from that. The motherboard does run down that side so it could be something in that? Ever seen any reports of that getting too hot?
Could even be heat from the antenna cable somehow?
Strange that it spans the whole length though.
Ill risk the return I think, got a video of it being broken so will see what happens.
Run over to Radio Shack (or whatever the equivalent is in what ever country you're in - I don't know where you are) and find a product called Deoxit/Progold. Deoxit cleans the contacts from oxidation, Progold enhances conductivity. Or find something similar.
This stuff is great for blasting inside headphone jacks to get rid of the "scratching" when your plug gets moved around, to fix iffy USB connections, etc. A little goes a long way. I don't know if it'll solve your screen issues, but it's worth a try, and if it doesn't work, you can still use it on other things, so it's not a waste of money.

I noticed that my new screen is genuine LG (at least its stamped all over it) but the one I removed seems to be a 3rd party replacement. Its got some areas that "look cheap" in comparison. Its got a small foil coating over the flex cable where as the one I removed didnt. I assume its to protect and move heat away?

Interestingly enough , the original digitizer is wrapped with aluminum tape. Some knockoffs have a better cover in fact. They use a hard aluminum sheet instead of aluminum tape. Some knockoffs don't have that shielding which is bad because that tape is there to keep the IC from getting spammed with useless data by radio frequencies and such.
If you haven't dropped your device , i don'T think it is likely that there is a problem with the glass. It's most likely the IC.
You could transfer your old flex to your new glass which is easy but you need some seriously steady hands.
When you remove the glass from the frame , you will see the flex cable's contact zone. It's basically the part where it connects to the glass. If you heat that area up with a heat gun it's gonna come right off when the solder beneath melts. Take out the new one and the old one. You need a flathead tip for your solering iron , which is like a flathead screwdriver. Simply take some solder and spread that solder around the contact dots , don't worry it won't stick to the plastic but it will melt if you keep it at the same spot too much. When you're done spreading , there are two dots with which you can align your old flex cable to your new glass. Use some adhesive tape around the alignment dots and Align the dots with your flex cable (you'll know which dots when you see it because it's orange and kinda stands out) press it so the adhesive holds and then use your heat gun and melt the solder to the contact zone.
It's actually easier than it sounds.
