This is a brand new unrooted Mytouch 4G, so I suppose I haven't done anything wrong yet. =P
I tried the wifi connection on this phone, and it usually works great. But I later found out the it's not very stable. I carry this phone with me and walk around the campus, it doesn't always receive wifi signal like my iPad would always do. Also, sometimes even when it shows that I am connected, the internet based software such as skype will not work (making phone call without hearing any voice).
Is there a software/app that can help? Or maybe I should root my phone for a better version of operating system?
On the stock ROM and all Sense ROMs, there is an option under WiFi Settings -> Advanced -> Best WiFi Performance. Try selecting that and see if it makes a difference.

WOO! lol i found someone in the same boat as me...I go college as well and my ipad connects fine, but my laptop and phone (for some weird reason do not). Ive tried a whole variety of differernt rom and kernel combinations including stock, but nothing would work. I really really really wanted to stay stock on my phone because I like it so much, but it just wouldnt work. Then I tried the evil 4g HD rom with fauxs sense smartass kernel and suddenly wifi was working amazing! It connected as soon as I clicked turn on wifi and stayed connected throughout the day even though I was walking around campus. Plus the rom has sense so its not straying too far from stock! I dont know what the reason is, but you should give it a go and see if it works for you!
I finally determine to try your method. I can't find evil 4G HD rom. Did you mean Evo?

I used the rom mentioned above....and the kernel with stock voltage cfs found on this page

my device only when enabling the wifi, goes hot in the downside at back of the phone, as when you play n64 games... and gave me wifi error in the wireless settings... is a hardware problem??
My phone heats up too when playing (I got max 40C), don't know if it's related to the Wi-Fi, but I think it's normal.
About the error, what message it gives? Just force close?
Yes it's absolutely normal when cpu and wi-fi chips gets hot when they are long used or in hi speeds. So don't be stupid and when it feels like it's doing harm to phone - switch it off game/wifi and give time to cool.
Heat also bad for battery too. Battery should be in room temperature not 50c.
I not play games, i only write as a example that goes hot like you play games... only that...
and the error is this... in the configuration settings --> Wireless and network settings
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/600/turningonwifiu8800.jpg
When turning on
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/20/erroronwifiu8800.jpg
that error goes up
What ROM are you using?
With all roms are the same, i update the firmware with B136, B138, B160 and B162 (stock roms) and already with oxygen, void, CM7 and MIUI roms with custom kernels, full wipe,etc... i sell my Xperia X10 mini for this phone it has the potential, overclocks well @ 1.5Ghz but the wifi doesn't work

Once i had error like that too with stock rom. But never with custom roms (Cm7, Oxygen or MIUI)
Do you added your wi-fi to wi-fi settings? maybe you're using wi-fi N? or some kinda of super security D try wpa2
Also as i see you use stock rom, they are BIG HUGE ****. Use Cm7 and franco kernel.
BTW - i think bluetooth is integrated with wi-fi chip so if bluetooth works than your wi-fi chip i think is good, software related error you just getting.

i already added my wifi settings in ip-config manually and doesn't work, my password is only WEP. i already read about that the bluetooth is integrated with wi-fi chip, and yes... my bluetooth works perfectly, i used CM7 with franco kernel, is the best thing to this phone but only when i active the wifi it goes hot for something else... if only i put the bluetooth on, nothing happens. the phone is cooler itself, well, the only thing i did not is wipe battery stats... for me it's driver issue... in my phone (chinese U8800) i think that the wifi chip is broadcom in this phone and the bluetooth is the generic one, because the chinese market i think, i need the broadcom wifi drivers to override the default ones and test it...
Last I saw, this didn't work on GB. Does anyone know if it works with ICS yet, and if not, do you guys think getting a bounty going would be a good way of getting it done? I'm not sure how hard it is to get working, but I do know that wifi calling on the G2 works with all currently released versions of android.

bump... would this be better in the android dev section for the defy?

I've posted a new nightly to my github account, plus a kineto addon package. It should give working T-Mobile Wifi calling. Everyone who's interested in that, please install both (nightly first, then addon package) and give feedback.
Thanks Maniac. Using your ROM now, but I can't register on the tmo network using wifi calling.

I've updated my nightly (same link), please check whether it works with that new nightly. Kineto package needs to be reinstalled afterwards.

It is working like a charm! This is now the perfect ROM for me.
I've uploaded a new nightly with the final solution: The Wifi calling application is shipped with the ROM, but disabled by default. In order to activate it, go to Settings -> Device settings and enable it there. If your launcher doesn't pick up the change immediately, just reboot.
Echo on wifi
I am able to make and receive wifi calls once again but everyone I call while on wifi tells me they hear an echo of themselves with a 2-3 sec delay. Using the nightly posted by Maniac on 03/21.

Can you re-try with my latest nightly? I've included an app that keeps Wifi at full power even if the screen is off (which obviously happens when calling due to the proximity sensor).
During calling you should see a notification that says something like 'Wifi high-speed mode enabled'.

No - questions go in the Q&A section.

I still have the echo problem on your nightly from May 22. Has the high-speed mode app been added since then? If so, I'll give your latest nightly a try tomorrow. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help with debugging this issue.

Yes. I added it in the May 29 build.
OK, I tried the May 29 build, and unfortunately the echo problem persists. :-(
It happens regardless of whether the screen is on or off, and regardless of whether the phone is on speaker mode. Changing the in-call volume does not affect the volume of the echo. Is there anything else I could try?
Edit: By the way, I have a nandroid of the stock T-Mobile USA Froyo, on which wi-fi calling works perfectly. I'd be happy to flash it and retrieve any files from it that may be needed to resolve the issue.

Unfortunately, I have no the slightest idea what could cause this echo issue, mainly because I can't actually try this stuff myself and am coding totally into the blue here. The fact that it happens on any audio output points towards network/Wifi, but I don't know Kineto well enough to know what the actual problem might be.
Can you share the system.img of that Nandroid with me? Maybe I'll give file comparison another try.

Sure, I'll send you a PM with a link to the nandroid. Thanks a million for working on this issue, and for all your work on CM7. Your builds are awesome!
I spent some time poking around in forums about T-Mobile wifi calling on other devices, and I noticed that the following files in system/lib/ are sometimes involved in getting wifi calling to work properly:
libcryp98.so
libcrypto.so
libganril.so
libkineto.so
libril.so
libril-moto-umts-1.so
librilswitch.so
I compared the files in the stock USA T-Mobile Froyo rom (on which wifi calling works perfectly) with the files in Maniac’s June 2nd build.
libganril and librilswitch are exactly the same in both roms (at least, their MD5 sums match).
libcryp98 is not in the stock rom at all, but there is a file in the stock rom called “libcryptoki.so”, which is not in CM7. I tried adding it to CM7, but it had no effect on wifi calling (the echo problem continued).
The remaining four files listed above are in both roms, but their MD5 sums do not match. So, I tried replacing the ones in CM7 with the ones from the stock rom, one at a time, with the following results:
libcrypto.so > phone stuck at boot screen
libkineto.so > wifi calling broken (Kineto app FC)
libril.so > no effect (wifi calling works, echo persists)
libril-moto-umts-1.so > no calls via network or wifi (invalid sim error)
I also tried replacing libaudiopolicy, libaudio, and libaudioflinger with the ones from the stock rom, as suggested here: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=4283#c75
Result: phone stuck at boot screen. I thought maybe the files were incompatible with gingerbread. So, I tried taking those three files from a Samsung Exhibit II stock rom (gingerbread with T-Mobile wifi calling), but when I put them on my DEFY it again got stuck at the boot screen.
I also tried replacing MS-MOTOJDN-FROYO-KNT20-02-A0-24.2.apk in system/app/ with the apk from the stock rom, since its MD5 sum did not match the one in Maniac’s build. However, this had no effect on wifi calling: the echo problem continued.
At this point I’m about out of ideas, but I’d love to see a solution to this problem and I’d be happy to test out any other ideas that anyone may have.

If the problem is network/wifi related, maybe using a different wifi module would solve the issue. I recall that several different wifi modules were tested back in the early days of cm7.1 -- perhaps one of those would be compatible with kineto wifi calling. I'd be happy to test that, if someone can explain how to replace the wifi module.
Another idea: maybe T-mobile's new IMS-based wifi calling could be made to work on the DEFY, instead of using Kineto:

Hi!
I have no idea how but somehow my wi-fi signal on my phone got like 3 time worse today. e.g. Two days in my room i had full signal for my modem now its barely connected.
I first restarted my modem and it didnt fixed anything. My prothers phone(HTC desite) wifi works perfect with full signal and mine not.
Today when i went to work and tried to connect to the companys free public wifi connection and it couln't find the signal at all.
I have no idea what happend to my phone. curently i'm using custom rom aurora
3.0 beta. This issue just came from nowhere.
Its my wifi adapter damaged? or is there a way to fix this problem by my self?
thx in advance!
dzo is improving the wifi driver, just stay tunned in the rom thread...
Your phone is OK, the driver is not so well
Go back to a more stable version and the prolem should be solved.
I also installed the original 2.3.5 gingerbread and still have the same problem.
its possible that the aurora wifi driver was still present when i installed the offical rom?
The main point of all problems - WHY USE FULL OF BUGS .35 WHEN THERE ARE ALMOST BUG FREE .32 ROMS.

Because there are no ICS for .32

which .32 rom do u recommend? I will install it, because my phone without wi-fi is almost useless
Latest cm7

It looks like something is wrong with my phone and i'm pretty sure its not the rom thats causing the wi-fi failure. I will clean my phone as much as i can from the rooting and changing roms and than send it to service.
I remmeber that this morning "12 hours ago" my phone felt accidently on the ground.
It didnt shut down or leaved any scratch. maybe than dmged wi-fi. i dont know :S
So a few days ago my wifi stopped working.
I've tried reflashing/changing the rom, flashed stock kernels and custom kernels, but nothing works at all.
I'm currently back to cloudyg2 rom. Mac address says unavailable but sometimes it works.
Basically, my wifi sometimes works for like 5 seconds a day and I'm not really sure what is wrong.
Bluetooth is working fine though, so it's not the IC chip right?
I've tried to take to a shop to fix the IC but no one can fix it because it's an old mobile and they don't have any spare parts yet.
Does anyone know what's wrong?
Edit: I have the d802 version.
