Hi,
I need two layouts. When I press fn+space, I get a list with all Scandinavian languages and English. But I need just one of them (Norwegian) and I need one additional (Russian). I tried "Russian Keyboard", but it knows nothing about "ÅØÆ" keys and it also changes software keyboard. For me it's better to remove all these layouts but Norwegian, and add custom Russian layout. I saw a topic with remapping of keys, but I didn't understand how to add layout and change mapping just for this new layout.

a layout is a set of key-mappings
you can find them in "/system/usr/keylayout"
I guess your phone didn't load the correct keyboard layout file. you can try to force your phone to load your desired layout file by deleting or renaming them
So if I put a new layout to "/system/usr/keylayout" it will be attached to the list?
BTW, I tried to root device without success. Temp-root doesn't work for me...

Fixing German QWERTZ keyboard layout for O2 miniS with English ROM installed is very simple.
Many nomally use AEKmap, but this is not allways fine for somebody.
Now we need a small registry hack.
1. Use a registry editor like total commander.
2. Go to \HKCU(HK Current User)\ControlPanel\Keybd\Locale.
3. Change the value of the key "Locale" from "0809" to "0407". "0407" is the locale ID for Standard German. You can find other Locale ID suitable for you at: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/winxp/xp-lcid.mspx.
4. Do a soft reset and enjoy. All the keys and symbols have fixed right.
Hope this help someone.[/list]
wooooooow!!
That's good.
I will try that NOW
Well I don't see any Locale folder under Keybd...
What next?

Dear cizake,
"Locale" is not a folder. This is a key, locating under the folder "Keybd". We have to change the value of this key. Check the path again, pls.
Hope this help.
I cannot change the vaule, I use PHM Registry editor, after soft reset, the vaule back to 0804,not 0407.....why??

I have no idea. I am using total commander. This is free at here http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm.
1. Check your programs that running each time you start windows at \windows\startup\. If they change keyboard settings.
2. After changing the registry key value. Do the soft reset by this way: Hold down the power button for ~5 seconds. When being asked to turn off the device, tap Yes. This will completly turn off the device and save the changes in registry. This method may different from taping the stylus to the reset hole.
I dont see Locale either .... would really appreciate any help on changing :

Check the path again:
The folder: \\\Registry\\HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd\
The key: Locale.
If you do not see the folder. Create a new folder "Keybd", then create a new key with name "Locale".
I thing this may help.
This is a fix for hardware (real) keyboard only.
Cool. For AZERTY keyboards the value is 040C. My ROM version didn't have Locale value in the HKC\ControlPanel\Keybd, I had to create one myself. It has to be String value, not DWORD. Thank you for great hack.
GUYS! YOUR ARE GREAT!!!
Works perfect with Eng for Russian Keyboard (Russian code is 0419). Now I can switch between Russian and English
yes can confirm 0809 works a treat for english keyboard, thanks!!
Sweet!
Yup! works a treat. Have now changed WM 5 from french to English (which gave me the english keyboard problem) and thanks to you changed the keyboard layout to French. Brilliant. By the way, where could i get the new qtek 9100 ROM 1.6 WWE?
Sorry, but this nice solution is not working after upgrading to 1.6.7.1
This entry in the Registry does not exit anymore. I can only find things whichhave the value "e0010409" for english keyboard and i want to get back my german one. Has anybody that number?
Check again kbaasch

my keyboard is now ok
oainot
Its works fine, thanks.
I have T-Mobile MDA Vario from German, I have flashed it with ROM: 1.6.7.1 WWE
And, with reg file my keyboard is now ok.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]
"Locale"="0407"
MrBuz
Great, stunning solution! Thank you! This is absolutely BRILLIANT !
I have 1.6.7.1 WWE and Russian layout works perfectly...
But the English now lacks a "comma", as the combination "dot+comma" is assigned by the system to switch between layouts.
Is there any solution to re-assign the layout sequence, or to assign "Shift+comma" to print comma (currently Shift does not have any influence on that button on my system...)
Awesome solution.Works like a charm. Can not imaging a better solution. A++++
Fixed permanently?
Cool!
Will this work after hard reset? If not, anyone dare to create a new ROM so that we can flash it and fix it permanently?
Rocks!
hello

Hello All, I have the new kitchen rom installed and need a bit of help with the touch keyboard/touch keypad.
When I first start it (say go to programs) and tap on the keyboard symbol I get a nice large standard keyboard with the numbers on top but if I change to any program that requires that requires input the keyboard switches to the XT9 automatically and I can't seem to find a way to disable the XT9 input.
Any ideas????
Hey Iggy, I have a unbranded herald and installed a custom rom with the touch keyboard/touch keypad, and encountered the same exact thing. I wasn't the only one either. I installed the custom rom I was using previously and I didn't have that problem anymore. I think it might be a keyboard bug in that rom you're using. I could be mistaken, but so many people in the herald community forum who installed that particular beta rom experienced that same *annoying* keyboard issue, lol.
Look in the Elf upgrading forum for the original thread by noonski, check on the first page for the link to the fix for switch to xt9 mode (2 letters per key). Just a note if you make the changes to have the full querty stay you will not be able access the other modes, also xt9 will be completely disabled.

look for the HTC Touch keyboard/keypad's cab file version somewhere in the elf/elf upgrading forums and copy it into your ppc. then tap it to install the cab. then use a registry editor and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/keyboard layout /Preload/1
change e0010409 by adding characters like XXXXXe0010409 to disable xt9 and make the HTC Touch 40-key keyboard permanent. (you can revert it back by taking out your added characters) BUT what i found was the landscape view does not contain a spacebar key/button! but portrait mode works flawlessly.
Disable XT9
I used this reg file found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344533 it is part of the HTC Touch Keyboard/Keypad file that can be downloaded as a seperate file.
..thanks...

How do I get hebrew (rtl) support on my htc ozone?
Any help would be appreciated
two things you need to do
1. copy hebrew fonts (e.g ARIAL etc,) to \windows\fonts on the phone
2. install "SP.6.6.1.arabic.read.only.v1.cab" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535108 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535108)
reboot and you can now read hebrew, no writing!
Thanks, thats working great!
Is there a way I can write in hebrew too?
yes try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=526399
its not for the ozone... but it should be able to work same phones basicly.. remeber to back up first! its alot of work.. but it should do the trick. you will just have to remember what key you assign to what button

Does HTC Aria support hebrew?
Can you read hebrew SMS messages?
Hebrew keyboard?
Thank you,
Oved
Yea, I believe AnySoftKeyboard, which lets you install multiple-language keyboards, from the Market has a Hewbrew keyboard.
I just got my new HTC ARIA & tried installing AnySoftKeyboard.
It say it was installed successfuly but i cant see the program in my device.
Any idea someone?
make sure to enable the keyboard through setting >> language and keyboard.

Keyboards will not be found in programs , but can be seen in Settings>Applications if installed.
To activate go to Settings>Language&keyboard to activate and configure.
To set the Input Method (choose the keyboard you want to use when multiple keyboards are activated) , do a long press on any text input box (i.e. google search) and select Input Method.

First of all, I'm sorry if this is in wrong forum (wasn't sure if I should put this in development or not.)
Thanks to elouch for pointing out the file to be edited.
So, I edited the character layout file to get USB keyboards to work the same way as Finnish (maybe Swedish too?) ones. ä, ö, å all work, there are some special characters that aren't working yet, due to my laziness.
It should be clear that you need root to replace the file (either with root explorer, or adb/qtadb), should backup the file prior to replacing, and that I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING GOING WRONG.
Also I'm not sure if this was the right way to do it, but I haven't noticed any problems/oddities with Thumb Keyboard after editing the file.
Now with that said, grab the download, comment, complain about the keys not working so they can be fixed (at some point).
Just remove .txt from the filename and put the file to /system/usr/keychars/Generic.kcm and afterwards plugin a USB keyboard and try it out.

Thanks for posting this. Should work with my Swedish keyboards as well.
Do you think you could do a greek one, too?
Not really soon, because I'm not familiar with Greek alphabet/keyboard layout and in a few days I'm off to vacation....to Greece, lol

Fantastic job you did there, salleq.
Since I'm from Denmark, I would love to be able to use the Danish æøå. I have been looking in your kcm-file file, but I can't figure out what you did to make it work with the Finnish/Swedish characters.
Is it possible you could point me in the right direction. I have already made some changes to some of the other keys, to match my keyboard. Just can't find æøå anywhere.
Thanks in advance.
>>> Update: I figured out, what I was doing wrong. I didn't see you was using Unicode character codes. Easy to fix the keyboard. LOVE my ÆØÅ <<<

Hi and thanks for sharing this.
I have problems getting it to work. I copied the file to /system/usr/keychars/Generic.kcm but, even after reboot, I dont get any åäö with external keyboard.
Tried both with an ordinary usb keyboard and a targus bt keybord.
Is there something I have missed? A setting somewhere?
I copied the file both from QtAdb and from a shell on the pad.
The pad is rooted.
Android 3.01
The onscreen keybord is set to swedish and working.

Have you set the file permission after copy that?

Hi,
Yes. The permission is set to -rw-r--r--, a chmod 644.
I can't understand why it does not take effect.
I copied the finnish Generic.kcm to qwerty.kcm just in case.
No change.
I even tried to replace the Virtual.kcm but then the terminal emulator crashed when i tried to use external keyboard, so it looks like the os ignores the Generic.kcm

The best way to see what's going wrong is to go on terminal, type ''su'' press enter, and the type ''logcat'', after that plug the usb receiver or keyboard. If an error with the Generic.kcm occour then with logcat you are able to see the code line of the error and fix it...

Got it to work.
I had to remove KEYBOARD_LESS entry and all the gamepad buttons stuff at the end of the file. also moved < and > to alt-, and alt-. since that button don't have an to me known keycode.
But now it works at an usable level.
Is there a tool that can be used to find the keycodes, like xev in "ordinare" linux?
I still need to find the codes for my Targus bt-keyboard, which has an Apple layout.
Thanks for the help!!

Hi, I am looking for the same thing to my Xoom, and Targus keyboard
Found this tool that gives you the keyboard codes, I tried it and it works as far as I can tell
Hmmm.... I am not allowed to post external links...
But if you google: keytest.apk
it will be your first hit
I have not gotten further yet in making my own file, if you solve it I would love a PM
Here is Czech layout.
Works fine with localized Apple BT keyboard nad Iconia A500/3.1.
Should this work on ics roms also? have been fighting with this all morning and cannot get it to work. I can copy it to right place and so on, also corrected permissions but still no go. Any ideas?
I tried it at some point with an ICS rom but like you said, I couldn't get it to work. I remember googling about it some time ago but couldn't find what files are changed and used now.
It's not really a deal breaker for me, I'm not actually using an external keyboard but it was fun to test and get native keymap working. I might try some stuff later if in the mood but for now I have nothing unfortunately
