I would imagine this is a fairly common question, but I can't seem any threads about it, and the forum search isn't working for me.
I have Liberated Froyo on my Aria.
It currently has the 2gb SD card from AT&T, and I want to swap it with a 16gb I have.
There are some apps installed on the SD card.
I was wondering if anyone knew what I have to do to switch the cards while still keeping all of my apps/settings/files intact.
Thanks.

Copy the of old sd card to your computer. Then format your new sd card and paste the contents of your old card to your new one.
I would imagine you should move move your apps back to the phone, but I'm not sure if that's necessary.
But those steps will ensure you don't lose anything.

Alright thanks.
I had seen something about having to do different partitions with different file systems if there were apps installed on the SD card.
The current card is formatted in FAT, so just use that?

You can change it, but you'll lose everything you've installed and have an out the box phone so to speak.
Well at least that's what happened when I changed from my test SD card to my 8GB

I use SanDisk
no!!!will not read the new sd,you have to format the new one with the rom you are installing.
N.B: sandisk 8G is highly stable with wp7...
you can switch sd cards without starting over, but then you'd have to copy the partition from your old sd card to your new sd card.
it gets slightly complicated, but only because of the numbers of steps, not technical complications.
use Easeus partition software and try to replicate the exact partitions across the old card and the new card
good luck

Did this work for you? I made a thread about this possibility but nobody knew if it's really working.
Hey there,
my question is the other way. Is it possible to flash an other rom without having my SD in to safe settings and installed apps?
I tested this way:
1. turn off phone
2. pull out the SD
3. boot
My HD2 booted into WP7 and ran a blank WP7 such as it was fresh installed.
Then I turned it off and put the SD back in and booted. It booted into my ol status.
So no I want to if I can flash an other rom, put my already formatted SD with my WP7 settings back in? Is that maybe the best way to safe settings?

i think this link will explain you how to copy the partitions....and more
http://www.techienote.com/tag/technology
Thanks jianototi,
copying the wp7 partition between different sd cards works very well. The system accepts the copy and wp7 launches with all adjustments, downloads and installed apps.
My question now is: Can I reinstall a fresh wp7 nand and insert my sd from old installation? Will the sd be accepted? Or start wp7 with a virgin system?

caiowa
so if we can move a wp7 from one sd card to another. Should it then not be possible to download from the internet, and just copy to sd-card?
Reason i ask is because i cannot get my wp7 to connnect to pc, so i cant get live services. However there seems to be a version now, where i just need to activate the phone.
If someone uploaded their data, can i download it, and update my wp7 that way?
yes put the new sdcard and restar to factory values

i was under the impression that it uses some sort of RAID over the card.
the best way to tell is to copy the card factory rest with one SD card, then swap the cards afterwards. Myguess is that it wont work the way you want it too, i doubt it will "give" you everything back on again.
How can this be done?
I have a class 2 sandisc which I consider slow... I have a class 6 on the way but already setup wp7 the way I like it... Is it a matter of simply swapping cards and resyncing zune? Or will there be apps on the card?
From what I understand the SD card is formatted and prepared in such a way that the SD Card becomes part of the main storage so if you change SD cards it will be as though you have a brand new WP7 install...
Stupid question. But if I swap out cards to a faster, better quality card and start from scratch, would I need to buy all my apps again or will it recognise I have purchased it before like the old marketplace?
As long as you use the same account details all will be well. The apps are linked with your account, not a specific installation.
I used Minitool Partition manager to copy my partitions from my old SD card to the new one. Worked like a charm. Everything (settings and apps) was intact.
Cheers for that, downloaded and installed... I'll give it a whirl when my card comes in the mail...

REALLY!? that will work? Now what if like in my case, I just installed a NAND Android ROM, but used a different SD Card. When I re-install WP7 when Nodo comes out, can I just install WP7 w/o the SD Card in place then put it in on reboot and all my stuff will be there?
I know probably a long shot, but would like to try or know if anyone has tried.

There is a difference between your case and the OP's case. In the OP's case, the ROM knows the old SD card's config (partitions, files etc), so it would work fine as long as the new SD card also has the same partition layout and files. In your case, after re-install, it is a new ROM, so he would repartition the SD card.
I had tried to use a copied card after a ROM reset, but it re-created the partitions. So a ROM reinstall should behave similar. Anyway, it is worth giving a try.
Hey guys I am upgrading my self from 8 Gig micro SD to 16 gig. Can I just copy stuff from my 8 gig to 16 Gig and things will work smoothly?
I have read some places about partitioning SD card. What is partitioning sd card and how it is done if it is necessary.
I am using VirusROM kingdom B1.3. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Copy and paste.
Partitioning is done via Recovery. It's brain dead simple, just follow the steps. It's up to you to decide if you want to do it. It will just be extra space for apps (most likely, not sure about what Kingdom ROM uses it for)
Tip: Partition before you move stuff over. Partitioning will erase everything on your SDcard.
EDIT: reaper24 wrote up a guide for newbies. HERE
You use amon recovery to partition your sd card. Something to consider is that it will take forever to transfer tiny files to your new sd card. Just transfer only what you need.
Btw you don't need to partition unless you consistently run our of room for applications. If you don't don't bother in my opinion. Also if you do partition its best to use dark tremors a2sd lots of documentation on it. Or make sure you are on a rom with the a2sd script because the froyo method blows. Breaks widgets and such. Just annoying.
Hope that helps.

Semi-hijack alert!
Is there any easy way to know what can be REMOVED from the SD card periodically, like directories left over from old apps that aren't installed anymore?

You can't mount SD Card because Android is running off the SD card. It reads the data.img on the SD card as internal storage and doesn't detect any SD card (I think) so it won't work. Also, in future please use a proper thread title, 'Question' tells us nothing about your problem

Hmm i remember there being some sort of trick to allow one to still mount the SD card , this was on my Sprint Touch Pro 2 running Froyo , but i dont see why it wont work here . Maybe if you partition the SD card ? I cant remember exactly what it was i'll browse around over on PPCGeeks to see if i can find it

I've find, but i still can't fix it. Hmmm, it is a big pb with me.
Pls help me.
I faced the same problem.
I'm using WP7.5 on NAND.
And Android 2.2 Sense on SD CARD.
Doesn't read anything from the sd card. Doesn't read my APKS etc..( I had massive data corruptions)
So i ended up removing Wp7.5 and reinstalling Android back.
SD partition of Android should be set to Primary which means you should have two Primary partition for WP7 & Andy.
you should see those in mini partition tool

Hi guys, i got a problem mounting the microsd on my hd2.
I've seen that the problem is in every rom.
Well.. every android rom tested seem to no recognize the sd... only a Gb of internal storage is founded... but if i open a file manager i can see the sd folder and navigate inside it...
I got an hd2 with android on sd and wp7 nand... and i already tested doing privilege fix... but nothing change.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
You have WP7, which uses part of your SD card as internal storage. Mount it on a computer and use a partition tool. Do you see the rest of the SD card?

OK not to cause confusion here but I think both of the above are slightly wrong. The reason you get 1GB of 'internal' storage on SD ROMs in general is because it uses a file called a data.img which is read by Android as internal storage. You will be able to use a file manager to access the SD card and you'll see all of the music etc which is on your SD card but if you try moving an app to your SD it won't work anymore.
However, I haven't used SD Android in a long time so perhaps wis or hengsheng are right
^He is correct. Internal storage is data.img, and it's usually set to 1GB of size. Your SD card has nothing to do with your internal storage when talking about SD-Android. However, I think you can download another one with a larger size, or just set it to a larger size in the boot up script.
(Either way, make a backup, because I don't think you can "enlarge" a data.img neither can you migrate apps/data from one to another.)
