Need help with the mytouch! - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I hav the epic 4g and the hero before this on the day it came out and all this mytouch talk is confusing....
I wanna help my friend use android tether so we can play over xbox live. Don't care about lag h just wants to get on for the party since he's only gonna be playing halo wars for the time being....
So if any of you can help id appreciate it ^_^
His mytouch has no 3.5mm jack so idk if that would mean anything...he also has cm running on it (an extremely old version) so I wanna put him back to stock first so that I can put a nice clean flash on whatever rom has usb tethering enabled, so if anyone knows how to do that that'd be great too!

There are tethering apps on the market. Have you tried any of them. You can use the superwipe to wipe the phone and get a clean install so you dont have to go back to stock.

The tethering apps on the market are trials
And superwipe? WIll that just wipe the current rom or take any and all modifications off? Id prefer the latter so that I will be able to tell exactly what's wrong if anything goes wrong because thered be no unknown variables for me

Here is a guide to unroot get to 2.2 ota stock and root again so you will have the new radio spl if you want it.
1.) Follow the directions here to downgrade to 1.6 donut and upgrade to stock Android 2.2 and Use the Root method there ~ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807899
Or you can go to ezterry's 14mb hack page if you have fastboot enabled on your pc and grab those if you want. Here is the link to that. You have to have fastboot enabled and again follw the instructions to the T. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
The superwipe will wipe everything just like fastboot erase system -w but supposed to be better i will find you links.
Here is a link to superwipe. Just follow the instructions there to a T. You have to power down in recovery and boot directly back to recovery for it to work. Also make a backup FIRST. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834812&highlight=superwipe

Are you wanting to use one of the newer roms or older? That might make a difference in deciding to upgrade to the new radio/spl or not. Im not sure if any of the newer roms have tethering in it or not. Thats why i ask. I know the older ones do. Like Enomther's 1.6 for example

Well any working rom will do. You've been a great help!!!!!!!!!!
also, by older roms do you mean pre-official froyo? Or just like a rom that was last updated in november? Because if you mean pre-froyo I'll downgrade to 1.6 and then just go on from there to see if it'll work and then once I see its possible I'll put him on oficial froyo and tell him he's gonna have to wait or be stuck with the first os he had (he hated 1.6 LOL!)

If he hated 1.6 have you thought about 2.1? What is he on now? I believe there are 2.1 roms out there with tethering in it already. I believe you can rip the tethering out of a rom and just install it on your phone with whatever you have flashed at the time as well.
And yes i mean pre-froyo. Donut or eclair
Also have you tried barnacle wifi tether. I hear it works. I dont personally use tethering

I want to root hero for wireless WIFI

I have a sprint htc hero with build 1.56.651.2
I want to root it for the ultimate goal of using it as a wireless wifi access point. I have read alot about the different versions but don't see much about my build. Is it possible to root this version easily and where exactly are these steps? Sorry to be a noob!! I have JB itouches and phones so I should be ok with this.
It looks like I am running an "old" version (1.56...) I cant find any info on rooting this version (how come I never updated?!!!) If I root it what will the new build be that I have?
Should I update to the 2.27.651.5 version and then root it?
Any help? Thanks!!!!
do a search for theresthatguy and look at his guide to rooting the hero
its really easy
or you can update to .5 and use the unrevoked, entirely up to you. its the same result in the end.
thanks for the info!!! which way would be easier? Thanks!!
Thanks for the info! I checked theresthatguys directions and they are from 11/2009. Is that ok? Which way is easier? Thanks!!!!
ok I'm ready to root my hero.
I goto the site to DL the android sdk, and I don't see android-sdk_r4-windows.zip. I do see android-sdk_r06-windows.zip.
Is this what I want? I also want to know what is the best rom for wireless tethering. I think the fresh is but just want to make sure.
sorry to be a pain
Yes that sdk is fine its just been updated since the guide was written. As far as the best Rom its all going to depend on you, whether you like sense or want vanilla android, whether you want 2.1 or 2.2. I personally run both damage 2.0.9 when I'm in the mood for sense and then also Darch's froyo build when I want to help fix stuff and run vanilla. Fresh is also a good choice. Just make sure that you use wireless teather 1.60 that seems to be the most stable that I have found.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Now, I have installed the wireless tether and it seems to be working fine. Few questions though. When I rooted, I followed theresthatguy's instructions. I was never able to make a nandroid copy for some reason. How do I do that now? Second, are my OTA upgrades disabled or do I now have to do something else?
Thanks guys!!
I'm not sure y no nandroid prob ur recovery image and no more ota updates its all flashing roms
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Make sure you have enough room on your sd card for a nandroid. Then go to the recovery screen and you can do it from there.
Reboot to recovery > backup/restore > nand backup
To reboot to recovery turn the phone off, hold down the home button and tap the red power button. Hold home until the recovery screen pops up.

confused about rooting

I really would like the ability to completely backup my Evo, wipe batt stats, clear caches, wifi tether, and some other things but I DONT WANT A CUSTOM ROM.
i am perfectly happy with stock sprint rom.
everywere i read about rooting the way the tutorials are worded they make it sound like you have to use a custom rom...
id like to use unrEVOked.
could someone help me out, thanks...
I used unrEVOked Forever and rooted my phone. It was easy and quick. It rooted it and kept the stock rom. I used it for like 2 weeks then decided I would try Warm. If you use unrEVOked, it should keep the stock rom and be rooted. After that, it's your choice to swap roms. I like Warm because it has the stock Sprint hotspot enabled.

You can do all of that and still use a stock ROM.
You don't have to use a custom rom unrevoked installs a stock rooted and you can still update it ota but you loose root if you do custom roms sometimes add some tweaks and functionality that you don't get from stock so they are worth looking at.

Use unrevoked forever after unrevoked 3 so you have nand unlocked to do the full backups the other reason is you can get root back slot easier after update

Your right it does but if you read on just about any forum here it's not a full unlock but by using unrevoked forever you get s-off or security-off which when you're talking about stock rooted lets you upgrade and root without waiting for someone else to produce a stock rooted update rom.

Gingrerbread & Rooting

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

You will need a computer but if you remember setting up your gingerbread update it asks if you want to back up your device on google..... Use ruu to go back root and flash a rom like cm7 and you can restore your device or you can use titanium backup to... Well... Back up and restore your apps. Also google as you know backs up your contacts. So you should be set.... Anyone else let me know if there is something i missed.

The RUU can be found in the Evo Shift wiki by going to the following URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy
Luckily the RUU pretty much walks you through the process itself. You'll need the HTC sync drivers if I remember correctly in order for it to find your phone. You should be all good. Good luck, dood

[Q] Which ROM is best for tethering

Hey all:
I just got a G Tablet a couple of weeks back and I put Vegan 5.1 on it. I don't have a smart phone but am getting one. I think the LG GT540 Optimus is the one I am going with. I have taken a quick look at the how to's for this phone and I noticed a how to for something called Eclaire 2.1 and a different thread for "custom 2.1/2.2/2.3". Which one should I go with. Do you know if either would allow me to tether with my G tab? thanks in advance
If you're really interested in tethering, better you buy Optimus One (P500) as it has tethering support in its stock ROM itself. Considering GT540, Mur4ik has already done with Wifi tethering. If you won't mind waiting for perfectly working tethering, then you can have GT540.
But I won't recommend it if you are just interested in tethering. Rather buy any phone that has Official 2.2/2.3 support.
Some recommendations like LG Optimus One, HTC Wildfire, Samsung Galaxy 3 (they both are upgradeable to 2.2).
thank you..
Can't really find your 3 recommendations at a similar price point as the GT540. Are you saying if i put the 2.1 eclaire and root the phone, tethering isn't currently working?
if you want a cheap android phone get the gt540 and upgrade it to the latest CM7 build that has WiFi tether support enabled and if you do get it make a swap partition on the sd card because i am making a softmod rom and it will have a few tweaks included for performance speed and battery
Ok. Just bought it. Partitioned many internal and external drives using windows but never done an sd through android. I'm sure its not so bad. Are the instructions for that cm7 on the forums some where? Thnx for the reply
yeah look at the how to thread in the dev section. it will help you mod your phone.
Sent from my GT540 using XDA Premium App
I read somewhere that you should upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2, then to 2.3. Is this true or can i go from 2.1 to 2.3 directly?
Also. I see a video on how to install cm7. What would be the prereqs, install fastboot and root the phone or?
If you want I can remote control your PC tomorrow to upgrade your phone for you?
appreciate it!!! but I actually get more enjoyment learning and performing this stuff than I do actually using the phone. Let me give it a try, if i can't I'll let you know. Haven't got the phone yet either. It will be shipped over the next few days or so
no problem just take the time to study the guides while the phone is being shipped.

Been reading some and there is a lot of info. I have a question. Can I just follow the instructions provided here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12898827&postcount=3 , going to 2.1, 2.2 and so on(can i go to CM7 directly)?
or is there anything else needed to be done too, like rooting etc?
all you need to do is flash a fastboot 2.1 rom then boot into fastboot and direct flash to cm7 if you want.

Hey All: Got the phone yesterday. I think I installed everything last night. Had some issues, though I bricked the phone a few times.
There is one weird thing. When I shutdown the phone. I press power to restart, it does this quick vibrate, then does nothing for like 30 secs, this is where i thought he phone was messed, but then it starts up. not sure what's up?
One more quick thing, how do you get into recovery mode, cause I think i need to do one of those factory resets after install right? thanx

I agree but i guess thats the price you pay to get the stock 2.3.4 right now
I spent most of the weekend researching what to do about this very thing. I was rooted but stock rom. I figured I needed a decision on what I was going to do before the OTA arrived.
After a lot of research I decided to go full S=off and install the Virtuous Unity ROM. I like Sense and it is a 3.0 ROM. If you wait for TMOB you'll only get 2.1.
EVERYTHING in this ROM works. None of the
"YOU GET THREADED TEXT MESSAGES!!! but the camera doesn't work"
Like in the bad old days of windows rooting.
I only wish I'd done this 6 months ago.
Yea every thing works but im wondering wit s off no root what can u do ?

Is it your intention to return to stock and run the phone unrooted with the 2.3.4 update or are you just concerned about having 2.3.4 on your phone? If you are looking for the most recent version of of Android OS, then MIUI is currently running 2.3.5... If you havent tried GenerationX mysense ROM, it is the newest update with bloat removed and i think there isnt anything broken with the faux's .7 kernel. Try it if you like stock, I bet you will like it.
I just want to get this straight, if someone can give an answer. My wife's phone currently has iced glacier and I want to go stock GB. If I take the phone to a Tmo store and ask for the update, it will take the phone back to stock and unroot? If so should I at least uninstall super user?

You could go to the store or you can download the same T Mobile sdcard update that Gr33nF0x posted http://megaupload.com/?d=N8XGHXJC (IF YOU ARE ROOTED YOU WILL LOSE IT)
1. Download the PD15IMG.zip file posted
2. Put file on the root of your sdcard (don't put it in any folder)
3. go to settings/applications make sure fastboot is unchecked (on 2.2.1)
4.power off
5. push and hold volume down and power till you get into hboot
6. it will scan file when its done it should ask you to update push volume up

The answer is yes. If you load the update, whether download the one on the forums here or update at T-mo you will lose root. No need to uninstall superuser, because the update will wipe all data.

Its my wifes phone and dosent need to mod it just needs to work properly. If I was to go the route of updating it with the rooted update, would I just need to flash through CW? To be honest I don't have much expreince with this phone as you can tell by how old her current rom is. Atleast with my phone its pretty much unbrickable, on this phone I wouldn't know how to recover if it did. I figure if tmobile does the update they are responsible for it.
