Updating to Tmobile Gingerbread with rooted phone - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone confirm that it is safe to take your phone to Tmobile and have them update the software on a rooted mytouch 4g? I just want to make sure I am not going to brick my phone...

you should be good to update but you will lose your root and there is no way to root 2.3.4 right now

It's safe I took mine in and did it

I agree but i guess thats the price you pay to get the stock 2.3.4 right now

I spent most of the weekend researching what to do about this very thing. I was rooted but stock rom. I figured I needed a decision on what I was going to do before the OTA arrived.
After a lot of research I decided to go full S=off and install the Virtuous Unity ROM. I like Sense and it is a 3.0 ROM. If you wait for TMOB you'll only get 2.1.
EVERYTHING in this ROM works. None of the
"YOU GET THREADED TEXT MESSAGES!!! but the camera doesn't work"
Like in the bad old days of windows rooting.
I only wish I'd done this 6 months ago.

Yea every thing works but im wondering wit s off no root what can u do ?

Is it your intention to return to stock and run the phone unrooted with the 2.3.4 update or are you just concerned about having 2.3.4 on your phone? If you are looking for the most recent version of of Android OS, then MIUI is currently running 2.3.5... If you havent tried GenerationX mysense ROM, it is the newest update with bloat removed and i think there isnt anything broken with the faux's .7 kernel. Try it if you like stock, I bet you will like it.

I just want to get this straight, if someone can give an answer. My wife's phone currently has iced glacier and I want to go stock GB. If I take the phone to a Tmo store and ask for the update, it will take the phone back to stock and unroot? If so should I at least uninstall super user?

You could go to the store or you can download the same T Mobile sdcard update that Gr33nF0x posted http://megaupload.com/?d=N8XGHXJC (IF YOU ARE ROOTED YOU WILL LOSE IT)
1. Download the PD15IMG.zip file posted
2. Put file on the root of your sdcard (don't put it in any folder)
3. go to settings/applications make sure fastboot is unchecked (on 2.2.1)
4.power off
5. push and hold volume down and power till you get into hboot
6. it will scan file when its done it should ask you to update push volume up

The answer is yes. If you load the update, whether download the one on the forums here or update at T-mo you will lose root. No need to uninstall superuser, because the update will wipe all data.

Thanks guys for the quick response.

Its my wifes phone and dosent need to mod it just needs to work properly. If I was to go the route of updating it with the rooted update, would I just need to flash through CW? To be honest I don't have much expreince with this phone as you can tell by how old her current rom is. Atleast with my phone its pretty much unbrickable, on this phone I wouldn't know how to recover if it did. I figure if tmobile does the update they are responsible for it. Is someone willing to post the steps for me?

If you want T Mobile to do it go to your local store let them do the sdcard update witch is the same as the one I posted one page back (Thanks goes to Gr33nF0x for uploading it) or wait for the OTA

Un-Root my Hero

I need to take my Hero back to factory specs because I'm taking it into a sprint store tomorrow. What all do I need to do... should I just flash my original rom back on there or can I download a rom from htc and it will clear everything? I understand I need to flash a new recovery image too.
Thanks
oh also, I'm running FreshRom.

You can flash the original rom back on there and be fine. They wont EVER press Home+power and boot into recovery.
If you really want to go back to default.. Run this RUU

after you run this can you re-root?. im new to android and i want to be able to restore to factory settings whenever after root just so i can re-root and practice it, as well as know how to fix it if i do something stupid or just brick the darn thing.
like i said im new and not good with forums where can i get a copy of the original rom? i would like to have that before i attempt to root.
also kinda off topic but do i have to be rooted to make nanoid backup. i would also like to have that before i root.

Yes you can re-root after running the .5 RUU
the original rom is contained in the RUU program linked above
You don't have to be rooted to make a nandroid backup, though you do need to flash a custom recovery image. Being rooted means that you basically have administrator access on your phone, can run things like wifi tether and can overwrite the /system/ folder. A recovery image is a little different than that...
ok thanks, i know root is just admin, but a lot of root guides have you flash a recovery image, by doing that you replace the original recovery image? the one that takes you back to factory reset? thats what im not sure about and im really nervous about changing that and messing it up and bricking my device, thought one forum said its almost imposable to brick.
ok so i have that RUU and another one i download. do i just run it or do i need to have a specific program on my pc?
i know i need to Google it and just search the forums but i don't have a lot of time on my hands right now.
If you're planning on going back to root, don't run the .6 RUU. I don't think it's rootable. At least that was the case when it came out. .5 IS rootable.

If it is .6, who cares. You can get root by going to the development section and finding the root guide written by regaw_leinad, and the solution for software number .6 is in there, too. Dunno why people make it out to be such a bad thing to have .6... seriously.

Exactly. .6 isn't rootable yet but you are losing nothing by flashing back to .5 except for the patch they released to fix root exploit. What a waste of time for them.

But thats after you run the RUU.exe I meant how do you know what version of the RUU.exe coincides with what version of the software with out installing or running it. I am still a little confused on what I need to do with the RUU.exe and or what it dose. I have been searching the forums but there is not a Good sticky or wiki about it, its only the definition. I am assuming it re-installs a fresh copy of whatever that version of the OS is, but i don't know for sure.

sorry I am such a noob and thanks for the help but i just want to clarify that .6 stands for 1.6 or donut?
-Thanks for helping the noob!!!
2.27.651.5 is the original Hero update.
2.27.651.6 is the update that was released solely to disable the ability to root.
The RUU for each was released by Sprint/HTC and flashed your phone from 1.5 to 2.whatever.
If you root, then you can run any of these to revert back to the stock Sprint image. If you chose to go to 2.27.651.6 then the only way to re-root would be to flash back to 2.27.651.5 which would only be a pain in the bum.
Since 2.27.651.6 gives you nothing but the inability to root then it only makes sense to revert to .5.
If this makes no sense to you...feel free to give up on rooting altogether. If it does then good luck.
BTW I only figured out how to root on Monday so these forums are most excellent..if you take the time to search through them.
Thanks its starting to make sense, right now I'm software 2.1 update 1 or 2.6 so i just have to go back to 2.5 . once i have more time i will thanks for the explanation! yes this site is the best and yes i need to search more.

[Q] Rooted vibrant and OTA Froyo 2.2 upgrade

My question is if I have a rooted vibrant to I get the OTA Froyo 2.2 upgrade? After the upgrade my phone would probably be unrooted or lockdown again. What about all the stock apps that I took off would that still be off? I'll say yes but I'm not sure. One last question. What about all the software that I need root to run would that be gone or not usable? and if those are paid software I would have to buy those again. Sorry for all the questions, I'm very new to android I got my phone 3 days ago.
Thank You,
Denyson
Ok let see if I could help u out here. 1st of all u dont have to root to get 2.2 it come from t-mobile. If u root u would still get an ota froyo update if u didnt change the kenel, but it will unroot it. 2nd u might have a problem from the update since u take some of the bloatware off. 3rd all the paying app that u pay will b in ur maket if it get reset and u dont have to pay it again. And if root app then u have to root it again or it wouldnt work. Hope that help

dont worry about 2.2. Were never getting it
You got the phone three days ago, you rooted and removed apps?! I'm proud of you =)
I would think that it might be best to go back to stock before you installed the OTA myself.
Definitely do a nandroid backup though....and maybe a titanium backup too..

Thanks tructo that does help. my kernel still the same stock. I'm a bit worry about the stock apps problem part. Also I hope we do get it Froyo 2.2 upgrade. and I hope that we can root that version also.
Would a factory reset put it back to stock? With the stock apps and all? but if we can not root Froyo 2.2. I don't want it. I'll stay where I'm now. I love that one click lag fix, battery could be better but all in all is a great phone.
I dont think u can do factory reset unless u do nandroid bacj up b4 u took it out. But the best thing to do is use odin back to stock. Dont worry about u cant root with 2.2. There is alway a way. The dev for this fone is great and it seem to me that samsung doesnt try to stop us fron rooting. That y it so siple to root it in the first place. And use titanium back up, it save all the app for u
P.s: for the battery problem I use bionix fusion rom in the develope section it great

+1 to what tructo said about the factory backup. You need to have had a nandroid backup already in place to do that.
Make sure you've got the latest ClockworkMod in place and also click on "Problems?" at the bottom of ROM Manager to get the latest BusyBox then try and do a ROM Backup.
As for being able to root 2.2, I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem =)

Do you guys think that the battery life is so short because of the one click lag fix? After 8 hours I'm down to 15% battery.

This is the first time I would have to agree with smashpunks. We will get Froyo 2.2, when everyone else is already running Gingerbread 2.3.
Samsung truly provided they can't be depended upon.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. NO MORE Samsung products for me. Well okay maybe I'll take a sneak peak at the Samsung Galaxy S2/Nexus 2.

Have you tried to do Z4root and the unrevoked s-off forever method. Just a thought. May not be a good one but I use z4 for temp root and I know it wont fully root only because of the S-on in the bootloader. Also which bootloader do you have currently. Gingrerbread & Rooting

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

Also google as you know backs up your contacts. So you should be set.... Anyone else let me know if there is something i missed.

I'm tremendously sorry, but can you walk me through the steps. Like how to use and where to get the RUU. I just don't want to mess up my phone or waste time. Please, I REALLY appreciate your help.

The RUU can be found in the Evo Shift wiki by going to the following URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy
Luckily the RUU pretty much walks you through the process itself. You'll need the HTC sync drivers if I remember correctly in order for it to find your phone. You should be all good. Good luck, dood

Anything yet?
I have not been able to do tis all day at work i tried 3 different devices and no go im starting to think that its not possible and you will have to wait for a new root.. (which is never a long wait).... Thanks to the fine people here at XDA.

2.2 Shifts are still available!

I got mine at Best Buy even. First thing I did was CANCEL the firmware check it tried to do. Figured if it was already at 2.3 no harm would be done. Checked the firmware version and sure enough, it says 2.2. Gonna keep it there till a perm root for 2.3 comes around.
Root it right now you idiot.

I know. What I meant was I plan on rooting and keeping it at 2.2 instead of updating and dealing with a temp root every time I reboot.

Just install one of the many custom gingerbread roms once its rooted, you never have to take on ota to update your phone, thats the best part of rooting, once its rooted upgrade or downgrade your os when ever you want, i rooted on 2.2 still have the eng bootloader and im running the most packed sense gingerbread roms for the shift its almost 3.0

Yeah I will probably keep the stock ROM for a while with only a very basic root. I can ignore the OTA as long as I want, right? I won't wake up one day with 2.3 installed without my permission will I?

No, you'll have to manually accept the update. There's actually a way to turn off the ota notification, its just been so long since I've used a Sense ROM I don't remember exactly where it is in settings.

Well I'm sure I will decide to flash a ROM but for now I think I'll just get used to the phone as close to stock as I can. Thanks for the info about the OTA. I think I figured out how to keep it from checking for updates.

Just go to settings/system updates/ htc software update/ turn off automatic system check
Just root, then flash a rooted version of the stock 2.3.3 ROM. Then you have the latest stock and perm root.

Yeah I probably will someday. Gonna mess around with it for a week or two before I go off and break stuff.

With all the support here at xda, as long as you have recovery your probably not going to break anything... but do what your comfortable with. Enjoy your rooted Shift.
Yeah I'll get around to putting a new ROM on sooner or later. Root first though. I really like Sense though so I'll probably go with one of those ROMs.

I got mine on Saturday night at Best Buy, and it came with 2.3.3 :-(
