Hey guys, I am interested in installing just the Voodoo Color and Sharpness fix. I don't want the lagfix. I currently have the AOSPish JK2 installed and the colors look really dull compared to my Captivate that I had running on the Voodoo stuff.
Thanks guys.

Why would you *not* want a lagfix?
I currently get great battery life right now and am afraid that doing the lagfix may possibly consume more battery life. I am currently happy with the performance and really see no need for a lagfix at the moment.
sorry to crash this little party, but wrong section...should be moved to Q&A.
So I am fairly new to the Fascinate area and I am wanting to try out some of the moded kernels.
Currently I am seeing the Stock Kernel, Voodoo and Stupidfast. Am I missing any?
Also I would like some feedback on what people like more.

Voodoo5 is for more advanced users because it converts all of your data from an rfs filesystem to ext4, but both voodoo and stupid fast are great options its really just personal preference...

I personally like the OTB Voodoo5 kernels from Nemesis. Awesome performance, super stable and you can choose between several versions to overclock or undervolt at different levels to get your own preferred experience.

I am currently using the stock DJ05 Kernel and have no complaints whatsoever. Haven't felt the need to seek out improvements from other kernels, but like a previous reply said, it's all down to personal preference.
I am currently using stupidfast 1.54, but can honestly say that for my usage it didn't make a huge difference.
I have been apprehensive about voodoo. It seems like a number of the "help me I think I just bricked my phone" threads revolve around voodoo/rom conflicts, and stuff like that.
I wouldn't be in too much of a rush. I'm waiting for an upgrade before doing much more to my phone.
Voodoo 5 is a lot more noob-proof than the old versions. You just have to remember to disable the lagfix (from red Clockwork menu) before you flash a non-Voodoo kernel. Everything else (nandroid backups, etc.) just works.

For DJ05 or DL09, there is NO better combination than Adrynalyne's Voodoo5 kernels. It gives you the advanced enhancements found in Voodoo, plus the undervolting found in Stupidfast kernels to give you increased battery life. Plus, Voodoo5 is A LOT more idiot proof.
If you have either, try this kernel, you will be pleased.
I just reverted back to DJ05 to test voodoo sound, color, and lagfix and I must say it's amazing. I hadn't really messed with voodoo until superclean 2.9 EB01 and it was ok but nowhere near as fast as DJ05 with voodoo. With EB01 I wasn't experiencing that snappiness that everyone is talking about but now I know. The headphone amplifier in the voodoo lagfix is AMAZING and lets me use my Klipsch Image S4's to their fullest. I don't think I'm going back to FroYo until the source code is released and awesome custom kernels like the one I'm on now get developed. Sorry if this is a pointless thread I'm just super excited and amazed.
For those interested in trying it out there are links below. Be sure to wipe data/cache and dalvik cache. If this is your first time using voodoo do not use this post as a reference. I do not want to dedicate this thread as a voodoo how-to because I have only been on voodoo for a week and I am inexperienced. Search threads to find a voodoo how-to thread and come back once you figure it out (it's easy). This is for those on froyo who have not yet experienced true voodoo custom kernels or simply just want to return but can't find good links.
Good things I've noticed.
-Snappier.
-Instant GPS lock!!!!(Just realized this). I know it didn't work on DJ05 before.
-Higher Quadrant scores.
-Market is smoother, apps download and install way faster.
-Good battery life. going on 12 hours now and still at 63% (Would be in the 40's on EB01). This is with the screen on full brightness!! On EB01 I had the brightness always at the lowest setting.
-Messaging is less buggy. Messages I send are received every time.
-SD scan is faster.
-Boot is faster.
-Sound amplifier/driver is amazing!
-AMOLED screen looks better overall.
-Better signal/speed.
Bad things I've noticed.
-Swype is being a pain. Said my trial expired. Other methods of reinstalling it I've used before aren't working. Swype beta says trial expired also when I try to install. To fix this see below.
HOW TO FIX SWYPE:
1. Download a swype.apk WVGA resolution from the interwebs. (Can't post it here)
2. Change your default keyboard to any keyboard other than Swype.
3. Using root explorer, go to system/app/ and delete Swype.apk
4. Go to system/lib and open the search method in the menu and type in Swype. This will search for any files containing the word Swype. There should be two of them one of which is swypelibcore.so and I forgot the other. If you don't see either of these then you are fine to continue to the next step.
5. Install the swype.apk you downloaded earlier and let it do its thing. If it says your device isn't supported you downloaded the wrong swype. It needs to be WVGA because that is the resolution of our device.
6. If you get force close after installing, restart your phone.
-Lower MFLOPS benchmarked with Linpack.
-Cant use FPSe(New Playstaton emulator on market), it's for 2.2+ =(.
Please, please only try this if you are comfortable with flashing. I am not responsible for those who mess up their device by lack of research on the topic.

Hmmm, I think I'd like to test it out to see what it's like. I never ran DJ05, mind posting the goods for me?
having spent extensive time on both...djo5 with voodoo does not outperform ebo1 w/ voodoo...while ebo1 v5 is not optimal obviously as its just the stock kernel w/ ext4...its pretty stellar
im sure some people would agree with you, but personally..i dont
and really if dj05 v5 was so much better...wouldnt we all still be on it?
I must agree with N17 after I recently did a factory data reset and reloaded DJO5 and used it for a few days i went back to EB01 I did notice that with my reset I loaded minimal apps and no wall papers and very few widgets on my home screens I am now using the same battery charge for 24 plus hours I am very happy also sc2.9.1
Well, without even having tried, I am now not going to bother...N17 has definitely proved himself around here in my book, and if he says it does not outperform, then it does not outperform and it would be a waste of time. SO thanks for the input guys.
Just my observations...don't get me wrong I love EB01 but its so buggy and I was not experiencing the snappiness I am now. The market apparently loads way faster with less issues, apps download and install faster, SD scan is faster, battery isn't bipolar I've had less drop in battery than on EB01. The color fix is great and the sound is amazing. To me right now being on DJ05 is way more worth it until custom kernels for EB01 are released. Other things I've found to be better are people receive my texts all of the time and better reception.

I'd go back simply for the sound fix, because most of what I do on my droid is music-related, but I'm too lazy at this point.
Crazy to think how long we've had leaked Froyo, and Verizon still doesn't have an official update out.
I am on SC 2.9.1 voodoo. Reverting to DJ05 voodoo sounds like an interesting exercise, if it does not cause the bricking of my Fascinate. Hopefully, the OP will eventually be edited to clearly describe how one might execute the change, including all steps. I feel comfortable with Odin and CWM, but I get confused regarding what modem, kernel, baseband, etc to flash, and in what sequence. Looking forward to a step by step description of how to go from SC backwards to a DJ05 ROM..

Well, I am.
Voodoo Sound and BLN are essential. Go SirGatez go.
Yeah, I personally prefer DL09 over EB01 for a number of reasons, but I hate that I'll no longer have access to flash and certain apps. That's pretty much the only reason I'm a bit hesitant to go back to DL09. I admit that I have gone back a couple of times because battery life is better, Voodoo Sound is amazing, and there are tons of overclocked kernels, and it's faster (especially if you use a Blazed Eclair kernel). I've never bothered going back to DJ05, however, since I started using the official DL09.
Why isn't flash on 2.1!? If it was, I'd drop EB01 in a heartbeat.

I have to start off by saying, i am new to alot of this. I have flashed CM9 beta and fb15 and love it. However, I was noticing that many people who flash custom roms, also flash custom kernels. Is there a big advantage to flashing a custom kernel like shadow kernel to cm9? what would i notice as an advantage? is there a disadvantage to it? Thank you
There's an advantage in the extra feature that stock kernels do not allow for such as overclocking and undervolting, voodoo color and sound. Depending on what the kernel includes. =] the only disadvantage is the lack of support from stock ROM builders.. meaning any problem you have running an alternative kernel should and shall only be addressed in your kernel's thread.

Well imo its definetly worth it. Bbelos' kernel is pretty close to stock.. and runs decently smooth. His voodoo color defaults make the screen come alive and takes that greenish tint most our samoleds have away/ adjustable via voodoo sound app. Also undervolting it will improve batt life as well as underclocking when you need it. =] all in all I would flash it.

That is correct. You don't need to wipe anything. Just boot into cwm and flash the zip . Tell me how it is, btw, I'm considering it as well.
well, i booted in to cwm and loaded the kernel from the zip file. loaded fine, and then told me to wipe the cache and dalvik. i did that. rebooted the phone and all worked well. only bad thing is the screen is much dimmer and darker. i need to find out how to brighten the screen. it is the difference of watching a plasma tv or going to a DLP tv. Have you heard any solutions out there to adjust the screen?????? other than that, i have not noticed any performance difference yet.

There isn't a major difference in performance from my experience with overclocking. Spent about an hour fiddling with voodoo color and have it looking amazing. The voodoo sound mods are the main reason I like this kernel. It brings out the true power of the audio processor and its frankly amazing. Audio sounds amazing out of my Denon ahd-2000's.

Hope this is the right place to consult.
I am on CM9 Beta3 with FC09. The reason why I flash a kernel is because I have no 3G connection. I tried to update the profile using the temporary FC09 SDcard ROM from the CM9 blog but it fails me. After flashing the ShadowKernel, it does not seem to work too. I am bothered with the green flash during screen locks.
How can I go back to stock CM9 kernel? Flash the Beta3?

First of all, the DPI is kind of lame, I had a G2X, which is supposed to be the same resolution but NOT as good of screen as the Nexus...oh well.
Anyway, cannot root, followed a certain procedure:
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-s-4g-root-one-click-55874/
I'm not a noob by any means, but for some reason with Root Checker, says im not rooted...even tho I was able to get to CWM via the .bat file included in the above procedure. Not too sure what's going on.
This Nexus has the OTA ICS installed already.
Any suggestions on the fastest, most stable, battery proficient ICS ROM at the moment? Custom kernel or pre-packaged with whatever ROM?
I came over from the G2X, but this device has far more options.
Best kernel (IMO) would be Matr1x, v20-21.5 aren't very stable releases but 19.5 and the latest (22) are stable. As for ROMs, you'll just have to try some of them out. Most popular are AOKP, CM9, MIUI and one of my favorites, PARANOIDANDROID. Alternate kernels would be Air and Trinity. Trinity is really cool if you like deep rich colors as opposed to voodoo colors on Matr1x and Air. But my experience with battery life on Trinity hasn't been too well. I've also tried Air, but at the time, it was extremely buggy. I haven't touched it since. Honestly, it all depends on how your phone plays with the kernel/ROM combinations. Visit some of the threads in the Nexus S 4G development section. Read around. As for my set up. I'm running AOKP build 40 with Matr1x v22 800/200 lazy (screen on) and 400/200 wheatley (screen off) depending on your phone use, you can get up to a maximum of about a day and a half. But that's very minimal use. Average would probably be about 10-12 hours with 3-5 hours screen on time. (Data off I presume). That's just my two cents.

Oh, well my bad. Luckily, everything I've said still applies to both crespo and crespo4g. As for CWM and rooting for the Nexus S. I wouldn't know.. I'm guessing its just a flashable zip file..? I've been rooted for about a year now, so I've honestly forgot. Sorry I can't be of much help.

Flash it and boot directly into it from the boot loader.
If you're still on stock, every time you boot up it will be replaced by stock recovery. You can remove that script with root access. Or if you flash a custom rom right off the bat it will stick
when i got my nexus s i flashed like 20 roms + matr1x kernel (because everybody recommends it, i don't know why). then i found out that matr1x is UV by default and that's the reason why i got random reboots with every rom. so unless you're a flashoholic and like backing up and restoring, i might be able to save you some time. flash cm9 and use it with stock kernel. good battery life and the most reliable rom so far. if you like flashing, just keep in mind that UV, OC and deep idle can make your phone reboot. so if you find out your phone can't handle the bloat, stick with cm or other stockish kernels like simple kernel.

No,
Problem was that I was using a tutorial based on the Nexus S 4g from Sprint. The tutorial said it was good for the Nexus S also, but it wasn't. I found another tutorial from the same site that hosted the 4g one and everything is good to go.
Right now I'm already rooted and running Trinity with a different ROM.

This is strange, I'm coming from the G2X, and these two phones are supposed to ahve the same screen resolution, but Nexus with a better screen type (AMOLED). Then why did my G2X look better? The DPI is much more noticeable on the Nexus, and that isn't a good thing.
I've found that the stock CM9 Nightly's are the best for me so far with the stock kernel, I can adjust the color levels to get rid of the washed out look and go for the deeper colors.
I'm going to check out your Xeon ROM, anything with HD in the title sounds good right now.
Also, which Kernel/ROM allows the color hacking? I've flashed 3 different kernels along with the cm9 v7 and this is what I've found.
-CM9 Nightly v7 default kernel - YES
-CM9 v7 with Trinity - NO
-CM9 v7 with Matrix - NO
Best ROM ive tried so far has to be DaXmax's Kangyultra-EX 1.3. Awesome battery and great performance. I also use the INK Kernel...

Read about Pentile Matrix OLED screens. You get excellent (pixel turns off) blacks, however rather than a typical 3 (RGB) subpixels per pixel, you get a pattern of RGBG subpixels instead. You will notice imperfections as a result of this and other OLED downsides. The SGS3 and GN also have similar displays though at 720p resolution. The SGS2, however, has an RGB SAMOLED (aka SAMOLED+). LCDs on the other hand have rock solid colour reproduction, essentially always RGB configurations and no uneven colour/backlight wearing at the loss of perfect blacks.
Also, just about every kernel besides Trinity should allow colour manipulation through the Voodoo app (i think it's voodoo sound) from the play store.

I saw that the Matrix kernel said something about voodoo colors/sound, but I didn't realize there was an app to allow me to change the settings around. That should open up the options a little more now.
I've only had this thing for about 12 hours, so I still have a lot of testing to do.
Matrix allows the gamma hack. You need to grab Voodoo from the Play Store to do so.
*edit. Seems you've got the hang of it. Xda app didn't load the last few responses for some reason . Lol

Yea, I ain't no sucker ass noob! ;-)
I'm thinking you didn't flash super user so that's why root checker said no. You only had unlock boot loader and custom recovery.
Racream by rascarlo paired with T11 trinity kernel is the winner when it comes to the nexus s. Check out the trinity thread for info etc.
Also make sure you pick up voodoo controls from the market to adjust color and full control over the awesome wolfson dac (read: awesome sound quality) in the NS
Voodoo color only works for kernels with it enabled. Trinity is not one of them. Morfic uses his own presets that you can't adjust with the app.
Some custom roms along with their own stock kernel allow for tweaking of the colors but only through their own settings. They do the same thing with the sound. Speaking of a rom and its default kernel.

If you didn't fix your problem yet, I had this same issue when I first tried to root it. I eventually flashed the newest super user through my recovery, and it was verified as rooted. hope you fixed your problem anyway.
If you like cm9 so far... I'd Highly recommend RemICS UX rom... has a lot of sgs3 tweaks to it too...
For kernel, AirKernel is great unless you use/need 4G (which u don't since u don't have sprint version)... personally had great results on performance and battery with that kernel... unfortunately for me, I had to find an alternative to Air because I rely on my data connection for my home internet... so that 4G issue it has forced me to reluctantly switch... currently on Trinity and this kernel is amazing an the colors are spectacular!!! Hope this post was helpful

Thanks for the input and yes I am rooted the way I'm supposed to be now.
I'm using RemICS at the moment, with the Matrix kernel and voodoo colors which I like better than the Trinity stock colors. I like my whites to be white, NOT have a slight tint of yellowish colorization that the Trinity kernel comes with.
But yea, I have the Tmobile version, but I use WIFI a lot at home, so I should stay away from Air even if i'm on WIFI? I'm not using Air, but I'd just like to clarify.
