Back from the dark side............ - EVO 4G General

Just wanted to say hi................traded my Epic for an Evo today, seems like better days should be ahead now

A wise decision you have made, my friend. Wise indeed.

thats what I am hoping for. Epic had some really nice features but in the end the lack of OTA support and me never once sliding out the keyboard to use we enough to lure me to the Evo

Welcome back

cool.. I hope you find happiness and fulfillment with the evo.

Funny... Me and the wife went from blackberry’s to EVO at the same time, and it took her about 2 weeks and she was done with the EVO. She wanted a new phone or a divorce. So down to the store we went and she walked away with the Epic. I'll say this much now that I've completely rooted, Rom'ed, battery tweaked, and spend about a month learning everything about the phone, it's the s*i*.... So out of the box the epic might win, but in the long haul I'm glad i stuck with the evo... The divorce, however it did cross my mind...

there will always be other new phones, they are much cheaper than divorces

but sometimes..
all you have is...
cut your losses and move on...
about the phone...
yes.. out of the box..
the epic is nice... same box
evo.. you can change that box.. with so many updates and ROMs and Sense 2.x

so what are the popular Roms here?
Im on Myn's Warm and its pretty good so far............hows CMod, is it fully functional yet???

I've been on MIUI since November. I tried going back to sense about a month ago, stuck with it for all of 10 minutes and restored my MIUI nandroid. MIUI is the perfect marriage of form and function.

are there any bugs with it. I loved CMod on my Epic but the Camera didnt work, nor did 4g or http streaming among others

Well pretty much all custom ROMs have bugs and MIUI is no exception. Thankfully, I have yet to encounter any with the build that I am on (1.1.28). I know some people have had [minor] gps issues, and some camera issues but I haven't experienced any. Since flashing this build I have not had one reboot, FC or any type of hiccup. It runs beautifully.
4G doesn't work (yet) but that's not really a bug. They are saying we will have it in the coming weeks.

have you compared it to Cmod?

There is cyanogenmod 7 wich is android gingerbread. Works very good i have used it and there is already a beta build of cyanogenmod 7 with wimax but like i said its in the beta process not yet ready to become stable but it works. I really like mikfroyos rom v4.5 its the fastest rom i ever used thats including myns and freshs rom and i like the theme it comes already installed. So if you wants sense give mikfroyo a try and if you want aosp go with cyanogenmod 7 nightlys very stable very fast and it has wimax hope this helps

Yeah, I tried CM but it's way too bland for me. MIUI is more stable, performs at least as fast, and looks a heck of a lot better. In fact, I get higher quad scores on MIUI than I did on CM.

Woooooowwww....the VIBRANT is really an awesome phone!!!

When I first got this phone I was happy initially but wasn't all that satisfied with its bugs, lag and wack GPS. I don't know exactly what bugs you may have encountered but mine on 2.1 went as follows
- Some live wallpapers caused my phone to crash and reboot if I tried to set it. One of them (Pano-planet) always forced closed on me
- I couldn't play Fruit Ninja's and Flick Kick Field Goal because half the time I tried to, it would crash my phone.
- Ever since the update to make the google maps have that 3d came out, every single time I launched the app it would crash my phone.
- Lag, Lag and more lag
- My gallery app when launched always crashed on me
- When on the phone and I'd get another call on the other line, my screen would stay black for like 5-7 sec before it showed me who was trying to call me
- Battery life sucked.
Despite all of these issues, I got used to them and patiently waited for the Froyo update. Finally it came out and from what I've read, its a total mixed bag. A lot of people on hear said it wasn't worth it. So I personally was disappointed and didnt want to get the official update, afraid it may make my phone worse. Until I found out about custom roms. I'm a total noob but did research on custom roms and long story short flashed my phone to the Bionix-V by teamwhiskey. I should've done this a loooooooooooooong time ago. Not only is every bug that I mentioned fixed, but something that I thought was a hardware issue apparently isn't. The GPS on my phone is the best its ever been since I got the Vibrant. And the battery life on this phone is beautiful.
For the first time since I've had the phone, it functions and runs the way I expected it to run when I got it. I was thinking about getting another phone that I thought would be supported better but changed my mind cuz my work runs so well now. It functions so well, that I'm afraid to try out other roms because I don't want to mess up things. Which brings me to my next point.....SAMSUNG!! Its soooooooooooo sad that they have a line of phones that are capable of running so well get backed up/supported or lack thereof with TERRIBLE software. Thats like Sony backing and putting ps2 like quality games out on the ps3....makes no sense.
Anyway for those of you who are still running 2.1 software and are on the fence about which way to go (official or custom), take it from a noob like myself, who a week ago didn't know nothing about flashing a phone and custom this and that. FLASH FLASH FLASH....SCREW THE OFFICIAL UPDATE. ONCE YOU FLASH YOU WON'T GO BACK.
same here, once I got fed up with the waiting and the bugs, I rooted, then eventually popped a custom ROM on my phone and it has been great seeing how well the phone can work with proper software
I love the developers here. It's amazing what they can do, especially considering samsung doesn't really seem to care.

This is a great phone and when the Vibrant 4G comes out we will be able to kite off what we need from them to make this phone even better
I just switched from an at&t x10 to the vibrant. Couldn't be more happier, i'm in love with this device!
Was hesitant to root for a while. Had a rooted G1 and loved it but I figured I would just let this one pan out. The T-Mobile OTA bricked my phone... So after learning how to use ODIN I decided to root it and see what I could get going on this and wow what a difference it has been. Still on Nero V3 and my phone runs smooth as butter. Amazing development community around here.
i'm new to this phone and someone recomend me to buy it. this rly is a surprise for me all this android stuff and the devs here are rly cool. i love my vibrant phone, won't change it even for an apple 4.
Ever since upgrading to stock 2.2 this phone has been the epitome of unreliable. It's like a pretty bad winmo phone running an android skin. Have to soft reset it (hole power down) like 5 times a day because the screen doesn't turn on. Pretty bad because you can think the phone is fine when you're really missing phone calls emails and notifications. Have tried factory reset switch batteries etc. Nothing works. It worked fine before the update but right now this phone is utterly unreliable and robust is not a term to describe it...

This is true. When the 2.2 official update came out I reverted back to stock so that I could update and see how well Samsung did. When I did, I saw the horrible ****tiness everywhere... slow and unstable... only had it running for 10 minutes before I just went back to custom software
It surprises me how Samsung ****ed up the official Froyo update when all the leaks we've been getting for our ROMs have been stable and acceptably fast.
Right now I'm using Bionix-v 1.2 and Dragon kernel 3.2 (a well optimized Voodoo-supported kernel that allows a maximum overclock of 1.4 Ghz and many more improvements!!)
im using bionix-v 1.2 by team whiskey myself and can't wait for stable froyo 2.2.1. im especially excited for voodoo sound that will bring our phones the highest quality sound output through headphones (thanks supercurio) and will soon be available to us without sacrificing battery life. i truly appreciate all the efforts devs here put into all these things.
anyone who hasn't been around here for long, please think twice before asking questions in dev threads.. i started flashing just about a month ago, flashed a number of kernels, roms, modems, custom frameworks, etc., and never had to ask a single question and never had any troubles just by researching, reading op and following instructions prior to flashing anything to get a sense of whatever i was doing. i understand a noob doesn't mean to be a noob. but seriously if you try, you can avoid getting problems unless there really is a bug. good questions encourage devs for sure, but a majority of noob questions don't and make serious devs leave us. i just really hope the devs who are working day and night trying to bring us good stuff without any rewards stick around and continue to produce quality creations as we've seen so far as long as my vibrant is still working and usable.. im so thankful.

Honestly it didn't surprise me one bit. Samsung probably made an exceptionally buggy release on purpose, part of their way of trying to shut people up and convince us that they weren't ready. I gave up on samsung support a long time ago and probably wont get another phone until the N2 comes out (I'm through with manufacturer support).
I switched to custom roms after 1 month of having this phone and i have to say i absolutely love it. I personally favor Master's roms. But all in all the devs here are absolutely amazing. They allow this phone to reach its potential in ways samsung never did. I'm excited to see what comes out of Eugene's source kernel.
Thank god for all the devs who do all this stuff for free.

Samsung software engineers dont know what they are doing. Period.
it is a good phone...the Bionix upgrade definitely made my phone run better but it gives me some slight problems on the vibrant that i have to work out
I had a Behold 2 and upgraded to the vibrant a month ago. I told my sister she have 10 minutes to play with the stock rom before I dismantle the POS rom and rooted it. 10 MINUTES guys!! that's how long the stock rom lived on my phone. i never even consider running stock.. currently running Eugene froyo 2.2 final r2 build with gingerbread theme.
I had a battery life hiccup for a bit. The A2SD caused the sd card mount to get hot and burns battery life. So i took all apps off SD and into internal storage and i'm now back to 24+ hours battery life.

It's funny because I said the same thing when I came from G1. "This time i'm gonna wait before I root". I ended up rooting it 3 hours later. Lol.
And yes as much as we ***** and complain about this phone, it's still a wonderful device. It's still 2nd best in terms of raw CPU/GPU power, with the best now being dual core tegras.

Evo Development at a standstill?

Well it seems not a lot is going on in the development thread anymore. Not much really new. It'll prob pick up after GB officially releases or another HC SDK is released with more features.
The odd thing is that I was thinking the exact opposite. A while back I was on warm rls2 and not finding the desire to flash. Now im flashing 3 times a week. Between the cm7 gingerbread combo, miuiu, elite, warm, ava, milk froyo, the desire hd rims, liquid... its a party.
I would have to agree with the above post... Despite the fact that I stick to CM7, when I browse the development section there are numerous updated roms. I was actually taking back by the comment that you feel there is a "standstill". If you only stick to sense then there not be much going on, But in the ASOP world there is plenty going on.

as others have stated, CM7 GB nightlies, new MIUI, Wimax on CM, Full HDMI out port, JsChiSurf porting all kinds of stuff from CM into Sense, and the list could go on forever...
The sense based ROMs won't be updated until the next OTA/leak from HTC, however, there is a lot going on for the EVO.
I just got WiMax so I haven't tried out CM7 or the AOSP WiMax beta, once they are stable, I might make the AOSP jump permanetly.
Very exciting times
if this is a standstill....how would you describe the epic development ???
Non existant

this thread is beyond rediculous
I agree with the above post.
Yeah, what exactly was this thread supposed to accomplish??
it has to do with acceleration, the dev thread has been accelerating so fast that it has reached a peak, there is tons of new so it's not that it's stale but rather theres not even more new stuff.
months ago there was a new thing every day, then there were 2, then 3, now theres still 3 new everyday but no 4 new or 5 new
Between the development standstill and the Gingerbread setback, it's amazing people are still hanging around here.
I would not say stand still, things are pretty much refined nowadays. as for CM7 we are waiting for an offical update for the nexus one then that will be become stable and have good drivers written for it.
Standstill no,

where else would we go except to the nexus s. only phone with 2.3,
I will welcome the day when development is actually at a standstill, because most likely it'll be when the evo is close enough to being "done"
I love tweaking my phone as much as the next nightly romfiend, but its nice when i can just use my device. I had a great time when i was using CM6.1.2 w/ wimax since that implementation was only on one build and so i couldn't flash nightlies. I am now having the same great time on CM7 wimax.
Its nice to just use my phone, and people can call me now and i won't be in recovery when they do, WOOT!
I too wish recovery had a dailer, I might actually use it as a phone instead of a small tablet with unlimited internet

How significant are the nightly updates on CM? I just got a new replacement in today and I might consider trying it out (currently on Fresh on my current phone).
Call me crazy, but I feel a lot of the CM updates are stuff we've had with Sense a while back.
the nightlys you don't have to constantly update when a new one comes out, grab the newest and when you feel the urge to update then go for it, its mostly perfected
after summer i think development will slow down alot on the evo as it will be well over a year old. most including me will probably be on the next android device sprint offers.

Stable Froyo ROMS????

I know this question has been asked before but I have to ask again. It's been a while since I've been here, I had moved on to the the Evo but I had a accident at work and I'm waiting for Assurion to send me my replacement. So I had to dust off my old Hero in the meantime, but I'm having trouble finding a stable, daily Froyo ROM. All of the ones I have found seem to have something wrong. i.e. Camera, Wifi, GPS... Can anybody suggest a good Froyo ROM with everything working. I know Froyo had to get ported over because the Hero never got the update but it's been over a year since Froyo. I figured by now somebody would have cooked up something. Hopefully a Sense based ROM (never cared for ASOP) but I'll take any functional Froyo ROM at this moment. I'm pulling my hair out over here. After coming back from the Evo & Epic it's hard to believe that the Hero was once one the best Android phone around. Technology moves soooooo fast!

i dont think its too hard to believe that the hero is one of the best android phones around.. yes she is a little dated, and she has some problems (99 problems but a dead hero aint one) but she is still rock solid.. and we have gingerbread now (thanks to some of the greatest devs around), so thats probably why you dont see a lot about froyo, froyo was cool for all of a couple months and then we moved on to the gingery goodness.. there are some sense based roms out there, both froyo and gingerbread, but i think they all have their weaknesses due to HTC not giving out the proprietary drivers for things like camera and what not.. so if you are wanting something that is totally stable, it will more than likely have to be aosp (but if you only have the hero for a couple days who cares).. but there are a few stable gingerbread aosp roms out there, i would check those out, i post no links because they are all on the forefront of our development section.. good luck with your hero though.. just treat her with the respect she deserves..
AOSP's rom was pretty stable but I found it hard on the battery CyanogenMod 6.1 or whatever it was had everything working too and the battery was much better for me. The only issue with CM was a random reboot every once in a while which was usually solved by changing the vm heap size to something larger.
Thanks fellas! Don't get me wrong, I loved my Hero. It was my first Android phone and started my love affair with Android. I've always loved HTC. But coming back after having the Evo and Epic for almost a year, it feels so inadequate. Gonna give a Ginger ROM a try and see if I get any better performance. Thanks again.
My favorite pre-gingerbread roms are zenexp 0.9.7 and aosp 0.9.9.2. Both of them are fast and stable. Zenexp is 2.1 though but is just as good if not better than any rom I've used.

[RANT] Epic phone not so epic

*RANT ALERT*
Ok. This makes me furious.
Cyanogenmod Hauwei Ascend
It's a 600 mhz processor. By a no-named manufacturer. WHAT THE H#*&??
Cyanogenmod can run on this android 2.1-flaunting pos and we can't have it? My bestfriends super crappy phone makes my phone look like crap because of the os. The Epic's got the hardware, but no software to match. Don't get me wrong, the devs here have worked MIRACLES on this phone. And the only thing holding me back from pawning whatever I can find for an evo is the amazing roms (frankenstein and anonymous, im looking at you) and the superbly friendly and miracle-working devs (Rodderik, ecooce, computerkid23, MysteryEmotionz, k0nane, chris41g, asdfghjkl, DRockstar, TexasEpic4G, qbking77, flimsy888, forgive me if I left you out).
Guess I'm just jealous that such a beast of a phone can't compare to such a pos of a phone.
*RANT OVER*
It shipped with AOSP android so it wasn't too much of a stretch to port Cyanogenmod onto it. One of the hardest parts of porting CM is getting an AOSP kernel that boots (part of what took the EPIC so long to reach where it is now).
I have CM7 on my Nook Color. It is nice but it's not a game changer, and stuff broke in some nightlies. Having working Netflix would be great but Epic screen is too small vs a tablet. ACS does it for me just fine, and whenever CM7, GB, AOSP makes its way to us it will make an already great phone better - but only that much.
Seriously? Even in stock form, the Epic still kicks ass. Tell me if CM can play ALL the codecs the Epic does? How about the performance of the camera? The Samsung camera is really pretty good. Can that phone play games made for the Tegra 2? I know the Epic can. CM would be great, but it's not the end all, be all. From a performance standpoint, CM is fast, but even it's missing some things that the Epic already has built in.
Oh trust me, I know. It's amazing even stock. But its like a car, you want the better parts for the best performance. And that amazing brand new engine won't fit in our car (idk alot about cars). It's also one of those "we do it because we can" things. It's a slap in the face to see it on these type of phones and not our epic.
At this point CM is very over-hyped. Would it be nice to have? Yes. Is it going to make the phone suck if we don't get it? No. The way people are making it out to be is like this will completely transform the phone.
I suspect when the Epic finally does get CM we will finally be done with the "where is CM?!" threads and flooded with the "this is it?!" threads.
It's not just Cyanogenmod. Its also MIUI and plain old AOSP. The epic is pretty amazing, but being able to say I can't run CM7 or MIUI makes me think twice about it actually being an evo-killer.
Personally, I will continue to run touchwiz roms even after cyanogen. Unless cm can make a serious enough difference in my battery stats to warrant removing tw and its features(which I find very useful).
cd's or tapes?

Maybe CM7 isn't so different from what we use now but I just put MIUI on my sister's vibrant and believe me it's a BIG deal.
In a perfect world, I would have the newest official MIUI on my Epic with Wimax support both on my phone and actually available in my area. I hope some day to get to see a couple of those.
Official Gingerbread Kernel source needs to drop now.
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE RAN CM7, because let me tell you I miss it greatly from my Evo, LOVE LOVE LOVE my Epic but seriously CM7 is where its at...Yes I like caps.
I'm intrigued by what I hear about CM7, but MIUI does not get my attention one bit. If I wanted my phone to look and act like an iPhone I probably would have bought an iPhone (and then promptly turned my man card in and spent the rest of my days settling for whatever the turtleneck told me was the best).
That being said, I don't care that these aren't available for the Epic. SRF is super fast and I haven't found any bugs to date. I get less FC's on my phone now than I did with the stock phone.
where to begin? cm is nice and having the option is nicer. but seriously its not some awe inspiring monolith of human achievement. the reason why cm7 looks so great on htc devices is because they need the speedup over sense.
as for miui, i too have taken great pleasure in bashing it, but recently i gave it a whirl and i have to say i am VERY impressed. the features present in that rom i hope someday make it into cm7. the customization you can do with such ease is amazing. the music app even blows away googles newest one.. (i mean cmon who doesnt like auto lyric lookups? ) contact management is a breeze and even syncs properly with facebook (something i cant get cm7 to do). alas the current version of miui lacks 4g and has a call bug where the call is muted (version 1.7.8) for the nexus s 4g. so im back to cm7 for now, til dreamsforgotten ports those lockscreen mods

I think there's more to life than software and operating systems. I'm very satisfied with what the devs have come up with for the Epic. The phone is fast, user-friendly, and easy on the battery. My buddy, who has an Evo, wishes he had my camera and super AMOLED. We're both stormchasers and are too cheap to buy real cameras. Mine takes noticeably better pictures on all settings. I guess it depends on what is important to you.
these types of posts make me furious.
These devs aren't going to waste their time building from scratch what they'll be able to piece together with a source release.
CyanogenMod is great and all, but try some other roms before you get all crazy angry. Do some research!
I am running my epic with SyndicateRomFrozen and the Genocide Kernel. I'm getting quadrant scores through the roof, and my Epic is a dream phone now.
CM7 will get to us. Until then, do something. Research. Flash. Experiment. Stop flaming start being proactive.
My display, camera, and audio quality trump anything that CM7 or MIUI brings that would make me want to switch to another Sprint phone right now.

The ROM I can't leave- Synergy RLS1.

I have tried to flash many roms, keep them, and love them. But there is just no ROM that I think does the EVO right like Synergy. Almost a year since its release, too! I remember flashing every one of it's nightly builds.
The EVO's life span is at its end. I feel like because of this well collaborated project, I really have enjoyed and got the most function out of my EVO.
Is anyone else just a die hard fan of this rom?
Thank you DEVs:
DJzager
incubus26JC
Joelz9614
myn
Rafyvitto
siulmagic
WoZZer
Virus
for your amazing ROM.
P.S. EVO 4G LTE, here I come.
i was on rls1 up until a couple of weeks ago, loved it. i'm running express for my daily now, playing with shooter and kornerz. all are working good and i like them all.
the evo still has a good bit of life left.. the devs keep bringing new features to the table. i'll be using it till sprint gets something i like, my contract goes for another 3 months..
t
I was a die hard fan at one time and still consider that ROM sort of a high water mark for Sense ROMs for the Evo. (As opposed to quick and dirty ports from other phones, this one showed some real skill and care on the part of the developers.) It piggybacked on the great community of fans that had grown around myn's previous ROMs, so the abundance of themes and mods was a real selling point as well.
But there's no denying it was based on an older stock ROM and older kernel, had CIQ baked in, offered a confusing experimental GodMode option (that turned out to be a developmental dead end and was incompatible with any mods or kernels not explicitly designed for it), and is no longer being updated with key performance enhancements that Sprint, HTC, and the wider XDA community have discovered or developed for almost a year now.
MikG is the logical successor to Synergy. Not that there aren't even newer and more exciting ROMs out there, but MikG really is the closest thing we have to Synergy that is actively maintained.

Gotta go with mikG also. Even while synergy was still being developed I preferred mikg, miks roms are always great.
i was definitely hyped up for the release, but could never become a die hard fan. tried, and it was very good, just couldn't love it. I've been on Tommy Tomatoes since it was released and find it significantly more stable and useful. I believe Tommy is a Myn disciple, so you would be as happy there
I will admit that I never ran the Synergy Roms but I've flashed a lot of Roms since rooting my phone in Sept of 2011 and Tommy is doing incredible stuff.
His Roms are great! Super stable with a ton of tweaks. Supermagic is probably going to blow everyone's mind!
Just my opinion of course. Although all of the Developers keep the Evo 4G interesting. The amount of roms that are ported over to the Evo are unreal. Lots of variety.
I might give supermagic a try.... Been on mikg forever because I always come back

I tried synergy mikgg3.11 and supermagoc classic evolution. I keep going back to swagged out stock n with lionfish
what a great rom it is, it was my first custom rom that i used and ended up using it for a few months and consider going back to it regularly when i get fed up with dealing with ics roms that are not stable enough for me to use on a daily basis and i kinda miss having htc sense now that im almost addicted to cm builds
Synergy was my first custom. But too many bugs for me. I did move on to Energy, but once ICS has been ported, there's no looking back.
CM9 all the way.
