Looks like you can't even use wifi without paying for a month of data from Verizon.
Greedy corporations putting their shareholders above their customers. I was planning on getting this device but I can't justify spending $800. The same goes to ATT charging $500 for the dock for the atrix. Shame!!!

Terrible.
I was planning on getting a Xoom, but now I'm going to wait and see if T-Mo's Honeycomb LG tablet is a better deal... I have a feeling it will be, even with the gimmicky 3D functionality.
The xoom looks freaking amazing. I wish it weren't so stinking expensive now if someone could port honeycomb to netbooks.... that would be sick.

Was looking forward to selling my iPad and buying this awesome Xoom tablet. Not for $800 I'm not. How can they justify a price this high? I mean its not THAT different hardware wise from the dumpy Viewsonic G-Tablet. It has better specs overall, but not over double the price better.
I was sooooo excited for this, now I am loathing Motorola for having such a poor plan for the pricing of their products.
G-Slate here I come (possibly).
Although I'm upset about the pricing, I'm more upset about Verizon requiring a month of cellular data to use wifi. That's just greedy.
That said, to put it in perspective, the Xoom is only nominally more expensive than the equivalent iPad but with better hardware (ffc, Tegra2, higher resolution, etc):

700 would have been a much smarter move on their part in all honesty...
I will be very interested in seeing how much the wifi version costs and when it even comes out for that matter.
No way will I pay that much.. if they are requiring you to sign up with Verizon you should be getting some nice subsidizing...
Wait....what...huh..you have to pay to use wifi? How can u charge me to use my home wifi. Where does it say that

It looks like the data is month to month, so you aren't signing a contract, meaning no subsidized price. I mean, you could buy it at $799 and pay $20 for 1 month of data to activate wifi, but what if you have to factory reset your device? I bet there will be a hack to unlock wifi in a week anyway...

Directly under the picture of the Xoom.
It says under the picture that for wifi to be activated you have to sign on for at least a month for a data plan of at least 1gb.

Cheap blow from Verizon....I had this on lock down...now I can't get it even on principle....that hurts
I bet they won't even let you leave the store with it unless you pay for 1 month of data.
Yeah, that is some BS. Really. I was going to get this instead of a laptop, because it ran Android and had similar specs to lower/midrange laptops. Now I'm most likely not. Moto is starting to look a lot like Apple, thankfully we still have HTC, who actually gives a crap more or less (but could be faster on updating stuff).
Sent from my HTC Incredible running Evervolv Gingerbread, the first Gingerbread BETA!
Severely disappointed, motorola just lost a customer, not for just this but forthe recent pricing/billing plans for the Atrix 4g (with its laptop base/require tethering). As for the Xoom, I too can no longer justify buying this device... 1. My principles won't let me 2. Price.
@500-600: Perfect deal given the hardware specs, would lead to large sales (taking customers from the ipad/and ipad2 marked, myself included)
@600: I would say it is a pretty good deal. Although i don't know exact specifics, the price of the hardware prolly runs around the 400-500$ range (even the tegra 2 development kit runs for 250$ minus a screen,R&D, and a few other hardware differences)
@700: A bit pricey, and over priced. Wouldn't have been shocked on this price point since it is basically the unofficial flagship tablet of Android 3.0, and a true "first-generation" android tablet(which understandably comes at a slight premium and early adoption cost)
@800: Completely overpriced, dont care how "new" it is, Tegra 2 has been out for more than a year. Adding insult to injury... required 1 month data plan(which in itself is RIDICULOUS). NO Thank you, Motorola just ruined it, period.
I can only hope it was an intentional leak/doctored photo. Because of this, I thought i would never say this, being a huge open source supporter(and big google supporter), i think i will hold of and get an ipad 2. Knowing Apple, the Ipad 2 will have very similar specs, new features, cheaper price point (and most likely to adopt an even cheaper price point, maybe ~50$ cheaper than current generation?)
Disheartened....

complain on their facebook page.
you won't be alone. a ton of pricing complains on their xoom thread.
I think i've figured it out... moto uses really expensive plastic. Atrix dock is $500. i guess i'm stupid for thinking they could make a wifi only xoom for $500.
silly me ;P
The Galaxy Tab needed to be activated too unless you knew the up/down, up/down, etc/etc backdoor to skip activation.
There's probably a back door to the Xoom too.
Can't wait to see how Canadians get screwed over by this. I'm looking forward to see what others bring at MWC in the next week or so.

HTC 'Supersonic' to ring in WiMAX on Sprint, Android-style
By Chris Ziegler posted Jan 17th 2010 10:51PM
Exclusive
Remember that mysterious HTC A9292 with WiMAX rumored for Sprint a few days back? Well, take a seat, folks -- we think we've got the lowdown on it here from a trusted source, and it's a bit of a monster:
* Codename is "Supersonic" -- a name we've heard at least once before.
* Feels a lot like you'd expect an Android-powered HD2 to feel thanks to a 4.3-inch non-AMOLED display and a svelte shell. (For reference, the HD2 is 11mm thick, but we don't have exact dimensions here.)
* It's got a kickstand on the back. This wouldn't be a first for HTC; the Imagio on Verizon has one, for example.
* Runs Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI.
* Our tipster saw it in white; production devices could be available in different colors, of course, but white seems like it'd be an intriguing choice for a phone of the HD2's size and shape.
* The phone's software stack is buggy enough right now to suggest that we're not looking at a release any time soon, but we don't have details on the projected launch window.
* It's fast -- Snapdragon fast, it seems, though our tipster can't confirm the processor under the hood.
We know 2010's just begun, but between all this noise and the promise of a legitimate 4G radio on board, let's be real -- we're already looking at a very, very early contender for smartphone of the year. Let's not run into any major roadblocks between here and retail, alright, guys?

Tethering on that bad boy will be awesome! Then when I head upstate I can still fall back on VZW's 1x roaming. LOL! Seriously, I love sprints 1 yr upgrades. Can't wait!
exactly im loving the fact that i can upgrade in 1 yr now... hopefully this phone will be coming out as my upgrade approaches...
illl buy it right now! if it works with sprint then sell my hero later.. or give it to my brother..
Hmm, Just joined Sprint in Oct and started a family plan. What is this 1 year upgrade?
sprint offers its preimer members 1yr upgrades instead of waiting the full two years, i dont know what qualifes you to be a member but i know i am, i would just call and ask if you could join or if you are one already

I've gotten the bill on time for three months, but what's the S|P program?
its the sprint premier customer.
it makes you eligible for upgrades once every 12 months and you get 25% off all accessories.
you have to have an individual line plan for more than 70$ a month or a family plan totaling more than 100$ a month, pay your bills on time and sometimes jsut be with sprint for awhile.

Either you have to be with Sprint for 10 years or get a plan that starts somewhere around $75-$100/year and wait three months.
I don't suppose there is any word on if it will have 802.16m instead of 802.16e.
I look forward to seeing reviews of this phone. Even on 3G, this phone will be a beast compared to the Hero/Moment. I have my upgrade coming in October, but will see how 2.1 performs on my Hero when it is released.
A beast in more ways than one - it's going to be humongous.

Very true. I hope the Sprint Nexus One rumors are true. I don't know if I'd want a phone larger than that in my pocket. Although, the lure of a 4.3" screen is inticing
I looked at a comp video of SS to iPhone... not that much bigger. When it drops, I'll hit the Sprint store and see if I like the feel of it in my hand. I can always get a holster or something if I don't want it in my pocket all the time. Lol.
I'll wait til it's rooted, but should be eligable in november.
Might wait til it's rooted. But with the Snapdragon, everything should be super snappy from jump. I'll check the reviews vids and play with it in-store before making my final decision, though.
So I am sitting here with $500 burning a hole in my pocket and nobody on the planet (except the extortionists at ebay) will trade me my money for a new Evo!
Was it really such a shock that the Evo would sell so well or did HTC/Sprint just not care and run their usual production line anyway? It seems like they are losing money as well by falling behind on inventory, so maybe it was a surprise!

So...are you saying that HTC/Sprint purposely limited how many Evos they made the first time around because they knew there were problems?
My argument is not so much that I don't have an Evo, it is more about how few were produced by the release date compared to the demand.

This is very similar to the HTC Incredible through Verizon. It sounds like they just didn't have the production capabilities to fill the needs of two very hot devices. I wouldn't blame it on either Sprint or Verizon, as I'm sure all of them would have been happy to churn customers from other providers to sell new lines.
In the WA state area, they were next to impossible to find within the first month of release. I'd ended up returning the pair I got with my now ex-wife.
I was pretty lucky in getting one less than a week ago from Sprint in Bellevue, WA.

Same thing happened when the HTC Desire first came out. Both carriers and companies that sold unlocked phones were S.O.L. because they ran out of inventory sooner then they had expected.
Sucks dishing out $500+ and being told..."Sorry we are out of stock and you are now #??? and we promise to get you your phone ASAP!"

I have no issued with my Evo. No screen speeration, my screen is properly grounded and I got it at Best Buy.
When you think about it from a business viewpoint. If you release your phone a month prior to your biggest competition who you KNOW will sell out, due to the major changes in the component of the iPhone. Would you rather have your stock during initial release and flood the market? OR would you rather trickle your product into the market and have plenty on hand when your competition is struggling to fill orders?
Bottom line. Find a Sprint Store that handles repairs, they sell a higher volume then regular stores. Get on the waiting list and wait. It sucks, but it is SO worth it. I did and I got my phone surprisingly faster then I expected. I have had it for a full week now and love it.
We don't know exactly WHY Sprint has such a shortage, it COULD be just incompetence but I haven't been with sprint long enough to know. But I do know this phone was worth waiting for.
dam didnt know they would do that!

I havent done much research on the N2 so Im not sure what to expect. But Im just curious, what device would you upgrade to in the near future. If the N2 isnt up to par ( i will wait till it is available to decide ) i would prob just wait till something great came out. The G2 looks great, but not spectacular. As far as Im concerned, the N1 is still a beast among the Androids....maybe Ill keep the N1 and get a Galaxy Tab
I personally just got the nexus a few weeks ago. I paid $450 brand new in box.
Tossled with the idea of selling it, and also had a buyer, but I decided to keep it. For someone like me, its a great starter phone to learn android on without the worry of bricking it (done that with the jasjar in the past) and I think its slim as hell.
I'd wait for something thats as slim, and maybe even that foldable Amoled screen in the Samsung video (just kidding).
When I do upgrade to a thin Samsung I will still keep the Nexy. Even if it means saving up longer for a $480 phone. The nexus is just a collectors piece for a techie like me that I'd like to keep framed someday, in a display case. even if it won't be worth anything in my lifetime.
Cheers.
Another great thing about the N1 is the built in tethering and WiFi hotspot.
ATT unlimited data plan + free wifi hotspot and tethering= no brainer.
The build quality is the sugar on top.
and just for the sake of arguing, let's say the Nexus S comes out available on ATT: I can guarantee it will be without the hotspot and tethering options. That was added to the N1 after the fact via OS upgrade. No way ATT will ever allow that again, imo. Not for free the way it is now.
Being compatible with ATT 3G and having free hotspot and tethering is a once in a lifetime thing. I'm going to get me the wifi only Galaxy tab and use it ANYWHERE I want via N1 wifi hotspot...imagine THAT!

I asked about this before saying that if the Nexus S is sold at T-Mobile/Att stores then they are going to have the IMEI #s and will block the phones from using web-2-go type of dumbphone data plans (the best feature of the N1) and also might have some control over OS features like tethering?
One guy on here said that the Nexus S might be sold through BestBuy / Walmart / RadioShack instead of T-mobile / Att stores and might bypass the carriers again like the original N1 did so that T-Mobile/Att wont have any say on what the phone can or can't do.
Here's hoping the NexusS never EVER is sold at a T-Mobile/Att store

With the way ATT is clamping down on data(no more unlimited data for new customers) I would be shocked if another device is ever ATT compatible and also contain free hotspot and tethering, no-matter where it is sold. If I'm wrong, I might get the NS given the dual core processor. That MIGHT be enough for me to overlook the build quality. I certainly agree with you regarding not selling the NS thru ATT/tmobile stores. Fudge them.
I'd also like to wait and see the battery life under the new dual processor phones before plunging into them.
I think someone made a worthy mention in another thread: phone technology is advancing, but is battery technology advancing too?
I hope it will tho in the future

Processors are also getting much more energy efficient, plus having a fast CPU without any CPU intensive apps (most apps would run fine on a single core 100-200MHz CPU) makes it more efficient in itself.
Edit: TBH, the Nexus S is really the only "must have" phone. If it has the Orion chip it'll compete with everything else through early 2012. You might seem some advancements in camera performance, maybe more RAM/ROM, but spec-wise, what else would there be to improve upon? Then there's the fact that all other flagship phones will be running Touchwiz/Sense/etc. and will be at the mercy of the OEMs/Carriers to receive future support/updates.

The Nexus is a great phone, but I want HSPA+ so I'd have to say pick up a G2 on Craigslist. They are under $400.00 already and dropping.
If you've had your Nexus a while and are just itching for something different thats what I'd get.
I mean if Nexus S is HSPA+ I will be getting one, if not then probably a G2.
Okay you're right but other than that I'd stay with the Nexus One.
Atleast that's what I'm doing for now. We don't even have HSPA+ or LTE or whatever here yet, haha
Samsung said they are releasing a dualcore, 4" Super AMOLED 2 (yep, 2) MONSTAH first quarter of 2011.
That's what I'm waiting for. If you're spending 500+ bucks, might as well spend it good.

If we get a Samsung built unbranded google phone with an Orion processor it'll be the nexus successor hands down, it'll have the best internals and be completely shrouded in controversy just like the N1. Either way if the Orion is there I'm buying it.

Better touch screen, better 3G radio performance/location (maybe even dual radios like I think it's Nokia that does it). Better headjack (recessed headjack = dumb idea, it failed miserably on the first iPhone for a reason). Better gaming performance (which would come as part of the Orion Processor).
I love my N1, but it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

Considering that this is the release day for the ipad 2, the timing would be appropriate, but a better ploy would have been a big discount this morning, just before release of the ipad, to undercut Apple's sales.
Like Digital Man said, I think its a response to the iPad 2 launch. We'll see how big the drop is. Here's to hoping to drops more than $100 lol.

Out of stock? Hmm how few of these things did they make? lol there isn't exactly outlandish demand... And wouldn't it say 'out of stock'? Idk just being hopeful for a drop in price I guess.
I noticed the same thing on Amazon a few hours ago... the zoom and all accessories are listed, but no price on the tablet. No chance every place is out at the same time without engadget making a front page thing out of it. It's gonna be a price cut. 200 off would be perfect. (I can dream...)
Bestbuy.com is still showing a price but it says "in store only" as it has all along. strangely, when you search for in store availability, it shows all stores in range but says "in store only" instead of "in stock" or "out of stock"
25% off coupon and $100 off coupon could have depleated their stock on hand.

More speculation incoming. This comes along with the news stories today that sales of the Xoom are "underwhelming" and analysts predicting large production cut backs and/or price drops.
Might not be a price change they are preparing for. Perhaps they are editing the site to include two hardware options: 3G and the WiFi only version.
Just speculation, however note there have been claims that Staples will have the WiFi only version as early as April 1, which is only a few weeks away, so it makes since that it will appear on the Motorola site soon.
drop the price so I can get my price match..lol

Would they really stop allowing people to buy the 3G version to make an edit for the WiFi version over 2 weeks before putting up the WiFi version for actual sale? makes no sense. You don't have to stop purchase of the 3G version to put up a new product in the WiFi version.

Oh & 10 char
How about them holding stock to install 4G in their current inventory? That along with Flash official next week would allow them to market it as the only "Flash 4G tablet". They would need to hold back inventory during the stock upgrade, but still sell off what stores already have. They new shipments would show 4G and Flash, which also could require packaging upgrades for marketing purposes.
Go onto the Motorola site now, and the Xoom isn't even listed. Something is up. I'm glad I bought at Best Buy and have Silver Rewards. 45 days to return gives me plenty of time to see if there are price drops or hardware changes.
If you can stomach dealing with crowds and BBs bs. sorry if this is a double post.

Don't envy us too much. To get this deal you usually have to camp out in the cold most of the night and wait in a huge line for tickets to be handed out (# tickets = # items in stock) and then hope you are close enough in line to get a ticket for the item you want. I used to work at Best Buy back when I was much younger and these "Black Friday" deal days were fricken insane. People dang near killing each other for a few bucks (and in some cases actually killing each other by trampling people to death, etc).
Personally I will probably never get a "door buster" deal because I value my time and health. Getting the flu and freezing my arse off for X hours in the cold just isn't worth it.
Price is right but I wouldn't bother if I'd be a meat popsickle AND they would be sold out by the time I got there, lol. I don't hit BestBuy with sales in mind so much as check the local stock before ordering somewhere online.

um, can you buy it now or within whatever the refund period is for best buy and then walk in on black friday and get a price adjustment or just return it and rebuy it?
250 bucks less than prime is awfully tempting but i'm still going to go with the prime.

Nope. Not unless they changed the rules. The price is only valid on the products in the store that are sold as this door buster promotion. (granted my knowledge comes from some 15 years ago)
So I'm guessing that selling my rootable TF for 300 is out of the question now?

I am always amazed at how much people sell and buy used stuff for, especially electronics. But really this is a pretty stellar sale and far from a normal price so I wouldn't be surprised if you could get 300 for it.

Pfht no, you can easily sell it for $300. Most of the general population is not going to be able to get this thing for that price. They will have like 10 per store. This is not a "week long sale item."
$200 42" tv looks good.
But I agree with everyone else. I drove by a best buy a couple years ago on A MONDAY and there were already about 20 people camped out with tents and the whole deal. Yes a monday lol, so if 4 days is worth saving $150 then so be it. It os for some I guess but not for me.
Keyboard dock's going to be $99 as well.
The Transformer at Best Buy has a different model number made just for them to hit that $249 price point for black friday "TF101-X1". Its also a different sku than the regular 16GB model on their website. The regular model numbers are TF101-A1 "16GB" and TF101B1"32GB". There is no telling what they had Asus take out to hit that price, regular glass instead of Gorilla glass maybe who knows. And, they don't have to disclose that because in the instructions of just about every device it stipulates that features or functions are subject to change without prior notice. I'd be a little leery on this one.

I doubt there's actually any difference. It wouldn't make sense to produce a different model for this, especially when there's a new model coming out soon. What retailers sometimes do is have the model numbers for their Black Friday deals tweaked to make it hard to go elsewhere and price match, or to ask for a price match on prior purchases. It's *possible* there could be actual differences, but I would be surprised.
I just asked my dad who works at bestbuy n he said basically what the guy said above me. Now if u saw this at wally as a everyday low price then you know things would be changed or taken out.

I bought my TF101 in Germany while I was traveling around europe, I was shocked when I saw the price, it's really hefty overpriced if compared to USA.
I can't wait until the prime comes out so I can sell this lovely piece of machinery. My question is... I am moving to S. Korea in February should I wonder if it will be cheaper in taiwan, I could just take a day trip there!
I am currently in the market to buy an Android tablet, and of course, this deal caught my attention the second I saw it.
I'm just having two issues making my mind up whether I should buy it or not:
- As we all now, the Prime is coming out sometime in December. I'm just wondering if the TF101 will feel old/slow compared to the newer Tegra 3 devices. Basically, I feel like I'm jumping on ship and everyone else is moving on to the next thing while me and my TF101 are getting left behind.
- The no built in 3G data is a huge deal for me, I would like to have everything sync on it while I'm on the go plus use it to stream music/video while out. Tethering using my phone is an option, but I feel like it would be to much of a drain to constantly be using it. I guess I could use a 3G USB stick, as that seems as the only other solution, do I need the dock to use the 3G stick?
Anyways, also curious to hear other people's opinions who are interested in this great deal.

i'm in the same boat you are. but this price is too good to pass up $250 + $99 for the dock. i'm going to try to just get the TF1 from best buy (unless its all sold out (which is very likely)) then resell the tablet for $325 - $350 and the dock for $50 - $75 and then use that $ to get the transformer prime.
