CM7 or Gingervillain 1.5? - G2 and Desire Z General

What's the similarities and differences? I'm on GV 1.5 right now but I see a few mods that are dedz to CM7 only...
Which one is more popular / better?

I'm running gingervilain because I'm getting amazing battery life. Only issue is that I get annoying random reboots.
I haven't tried CM7 yet because I had awful battery life and 3g speed. On 6.1 and am reluctant to get that again
Hope it helps a bit on the gingervillain front
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Really? Awful battery life? I switched to cm7 and my battery life easily meets or exceeds what I was getting with cm 6.1.1 + undervolted kernel.
Which is to say about 8 hours of continuous usage including web browsing and texting, etc.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.

I was wondering this as well. I just chose cm7 randomly . I like it so i am too lazy to try the other roms.

I flashed Gingervillain 1.4 a little while back and I didn't like the feel of gingerbread at the time, so I went back to CM6.1. The keyboard's autocorrect wasn't functioning at the time either (good keyboard; not a fan of swype) and didn't want to go through the rounds of making the fix, but the issue is probably resolved. I was unhappy with the battery life in the two days I used it (stock kernel), so I left it.
I think the developers are working on their own custom themes, but that was an issue for me at the time too. CM7 has the stock gingerbread look by default, as well as various themers who stay up to date with their respective themes. I no longer use any of those, as I've come to like stock GB's look (I just replaced the font and launcher), but I feel more comfortable with CM, though you should probably just give both of them a try on your own and see how you like it.

GingerVillian is mainly kanged from CM7, but CM7 is updated nightly.
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk

Been using GingerVillain 1.5 for a while now and despite having great battery life (6am to 11pm, still have between 40 and 60% w/ heavy use) but the constant reboots are such an issue for me I'm going try out CM7. Hopefully 1.6 will solve the reboots. And yes on 6.1 I got 9hours max on stock kernel. Same use as GV. Bunch of texting, auto sync on, constant music and some browsing all at 50% brighness all the time
EDIT: Went to CM7, battery and overal functionality isnt as good as GV but it gets cool points for not restarting all the time

Sometimes 2.1 ROM's are just better

Hey guys,
I wanted to share this with the forum. I have tried every ROM on this site. in fact, I am self diagnosed with EFS (Excessive Flashing Syndrome). In my travels I landed on Froyo because I really like AOSP and cm6 is cool.
However issues with the nightlies forced me to try a 2.1 sense ROM again for some much missed stability. So I went back to my "old reliable" which is Aloysius 2.1. Since I have gotten used to no sense I just downloaded Launcher Pro from the market, pushed the aosp email client, dialer, and news widgets to the ROM and loaded the HTC Anykernel stock setting kernel and poof. I am running smooth as ever, fast as ever, and no issues with MMS, trying to find a signal fix, or VVM problems, etc etc etc. It just works. No worrying with google apps or flashing a million kernels, battery tweaks or anything.
Here is the best part. I ramped it up to 729mhz with set cpu and enabled JIT (yes, it's in there) and got 5.2 MFLOPS and 450 quadrant scores. It runs really fast. I scale it back to 710 for everyday use and as of now I am at 8 hours 30 minutes use and still have 77% battery left. That is moderate use including 10 phone calls, countless emails, about 20 text messages, and I have been connected to wi-fi for over half of those 8 hours! I dare say it is the best running, most stable ROM for the Hero.
Please no flaming, I still love CM6 and am not saying it is bad or anything. Just that if you want a ROM with lots of color, unmatched stability, ridiculous battery life, and all the speed you need, you may want to check it out.
Thanks to Konikub for making it!
Sounds nice man, mind sending me a zip? My average run time is 9hours till dead battery.

Is this rom being supported anymore?
Mac
I'm getting equal if not better performance with NFX-Rom. I used to have Aloysius' rom.. it gave me many issues... I'm also running JIT without any issues as well.
To each his own... that's the great thing about Android - it's truly customizable to meet your needs.
do we not get pinch zooming with 2.2 and do we also lose the ability to type in a name into the dialer?
are the apps to fix these missing features.
how about calendar searching, without these items 2.2 might prove to be worthless to me. glad everyone else likes it.
Thanks
Just FYI, I switched back to the 2.2 RC1. I am actually getting the same battery life this time round. The deciding factor was the fact that the developer of aloysius has moved on to Evo and isn't supporting that ROM anymore. My attempts to reach him were unsuccessful so I'll stick with this great ROM on AOSP. I'm such an idiot.

[Q] [Poll] Post your favorite ROM/Kernel combination for the Epic 4G!

I have to admit, I have selfish reasons for posting this poll. I never know what is the most stable/feature rich ROM available without reading through countless posts on several forums so I thought it would be good to have a central place for people to get an idea on what everyone else is currently using.
Right now I'm using Epic Experience with Phoenix kernel and my screen goes black with no way to bring it back without a battery pull. So I need to know what ROM to try next. My goals are simple:
Fast, stable, and most importantly... good battery life.
I just finally convinced my wife to let me root her epic in order to fix battery life and its not working very well.
I am using Baked Snack v1.3 and was on the Boss Rom before with Mixup Kernel. On BakedSnackShack.com you can download it for free. Herver was kicked off for asking for donations ($5min) before the public release, but let me tell you I have not run into 1 problem in ANY program in the last month...I don't plan on ever going to another developer because of his great success and features. He should be allowed back on but every time he does more drama happens. A rom is different for everyone and thats why there are so many developers to suite your needs. Good luck and if nothing else just try it out....I assure you will be impressed!
you need to realize what works for one person will not work for another. different combanations work and suite others needs then their own. i suggest trying everything out and find what works the best for you
I have to say, I agree with mysteryemotionz. What one person may prefer may be what another dislikes. What one person may notice as being a problem, another may overlook. For instance, on the EVO forums a lot of people like cyanogenmod. I personally do not due to the lack of certain functions like 4G and other things (havent look at their forum in awhile so IDk if its still not working now).
Im currently using Epic Experience and mixup kernel. I loved AOSP Magic, but Epic Experience seems to have better support. I prefer the look of AOSP magic tho. I havent tried any other kernel since Im currently satisfied with how I have mixup running.
Yup...baked snack is the best so far I'd say. I've tried em all. Still haven't gotten the battery life that I've read about in some posts. But the battery life is by far better than stock. I'm using epic experience 1.2.0.4 with the latest mixup kernel also tried the latest phoenix kernel with no significant difference. So I just keep trying new things till something better comes along.

At first you say that you're using Baked Snack v1.3 but then later on you mention Herver and in the same sentence say "...I have not run in to 1 problem in ANY program in the last month".
So which is it? What ROM are you using that isn't giving you any grief right now?
Baked Snack v1.3 or Herver?
Also, while I'm on the subject, how do I add more options to the poll?

I don't think there's a "best" ROM / kernel combo for everyone.
It seems that each individual's phones and experiences can and are different.
For example, I was running stock rooted ROM with every version of MixUp since it's inception. On the most recent MixUp I started having battery life issues with no other changes so I decided to try a few things. First thing I did was change to the Epic Experience ROM which did improve my battery life a bit with the latest MixUp back to where it had been with the stock ROM and the previous MixUp. After reading a lot that the Phoenix kernel worked really good with Epic Experience I changed to the most recent version of it. Battery life went off the charts in the good direction with no other change. Phoenix is suppose to run at interactive governor by default but I was getting some weird behavior from it, so I swapped it to conservative and it's working perfect for me. When using any of the kernels I always kept my minimum set to 200Mhz to avoid any sleep/lockup/wakeup issues.
I don't think Phoenix is a better kernel than MixUp, nor do I think MixUp is, just for right now, Phoenix is working better for MY phone. I'll probably continue to bounce back and forth between these two as newer versions of each are released.
The below screen shot was after some light usage, a few phone calls, little bit of texting, maybe about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time on Wi-fi, maybe 30min to 1hr of games, maybe an hour of web surfing.
Baked Snack 1.3 with Phoenix 1.49.
I got about 13.5 hours of battery yesterday.
I used the baked snack kernel for a few days with noobl's andromeda (de odex) rom.. With many apps I didn't need, removed. I had many lockups (especially while charging) where a battery pull was the only way to get out. The only consistent crash I could find was if I was plugged into ac, with screen off, and received a notification, e.g. gmail message.. Which meant for me, no wake up alarm in the morning. I liked the speed, but the instability, on my setup at least, had me switch back to mixed up kernel. I still don't have the best battery life, but I'm getting to the bottom of that in the mixed up thread. Fwiw.
Sent with my 4G interwebs.
by far my favorite and my current set up: apophis 1.1 (rom) and baked snack 1.3 (kernel), overclocked to 1.3 ghz.
i get linpak scores of 10.5 + consistantly and quadrant scores of 1010 + consistantly. this is the fastest combination ive ever used. when i first unplug it, the battery usually drops down to 95% in a couple minutes but steadies out after that. by the end of the day, once i get home from school, i usally have at least 20% left. and that's with 4g always on and moderate to heavy usage. once plugged in, it charges at a steady and fast rate.
i have my phone stripped down to bare minimum and only a few apps that i need. ive had zero black screens and few to none force closes upon rebooting but none to freak out about or anything that proves a problem.
props to the developers. thank you for providing the community with your hard work.

wtf OP? did you have to make a poll?
I had the same problems as the poster, but i think it was setcpu, i kept messing with the settings. I ended up leaving it on conservative, and it has not turned off on me since.
Im running phonix kernal / epic experience
I get like 20 maybe more hours of usage, fast charges, and only drains very little battery overnight..
i like this setup
I personally use Epic Experience 1.2.0.4 and Phoenix 1.49. I switched the governor to conservative because I had issues with the default interactive and have had zero issues since I switched. I got amazing battery life just 1ghz but I underclocked to 800mhz to improve my battery life even more without compromising on performance. If I'm doing something processor intensive I do bring it back up to 1ghz or even to 1.2ghz haha. But this combo works for me and I got approximately 35hrs with what I would call light usage. With moderate to heavy usage I average about 18hrs.
It definitely seems that Epic Experience / Phoenix is the most popular combo, at least with those voting.
Glad to see others have reported similar experiences to mine with this combo as well.
Could just be mental, but I also seemed to notice that the phone charges a lot quicker than before with this Rom/Kernel as well as not getting as hot while charging. Not sure how/if it could effect this, but it sure "seems" that way.

Maybe that was my problem. I'm now running Baked Snack 1.3 and the kernel says Here_Over. The volume won't work and there are other issues. My wife is gunna kill me if I don't get her a working phone soon. She's going to ask me to take her back to stock. (Ugh)
When following the instructions for flashing Epic Experience I never saw anything about setcpu or a governor. I just left everything at defaults.

Top 3 reasons you Rom/Theme works for you

Is it battery Life? styling? quickness? all three maybe? Im using mikfroyo 4.4. pretty quick. Would love to use the Hulu thats installed, wont let me tho.. thats the only negative.
I like trying to maximize my battery life, so I've been on Calkulin's EViO 2 for the past week. Performance is still adequate and battery life is amazing. Lots of fun knobs to twist with his battery scripts.

1 Having the highest scores tested.
2. Getting 24 hrs of battery life
3. The amazing features brought to you by the amazing and nicest development team in the game.
Sending from my EVO running MIUI with SBC...not for the faint of heart
I've been running MIUI for about a week now.
1. Consistently getting over 20 hours of battery life.
2. Stability. No FCs or crashes or reboots since its been running..
3. Quadrant and linpack scores aside, my phone has never run faster or smoother.
I recommend everyone giving this ROM a try.

How many hours of heavy use you get out of MIUI? I've tried it and its cool, but you have to give up some nice sense hacks (like roaming verizon at 3g speeds)
Sent from my grubby hand
I am currently running VaelPak 3.0, and here are some of the reasons why:
1. No sense to lag the phone, but keeps some of the sense features.
2. Fast performance.
3. Great battery life so far.
This is only my second ROM, so I am still trying to figure out my best options. I will more than likely switch over to Cyanogen once it the 4G release becomes more stable.
I'm currenly running Sprint Lover. But i flash everyday....
1) I like to have the option to change around
2) Fast performance
3) and of course the battery life.
1. 4G (will switch to cyanogen/MIUI once 4G works)
2. Wireless tether
3. Battery life, performance, looks
Right now, I'm using Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5 with GO Launcher.
1. 4G. I get 4G at school and in one of my classes, I use it with EasyTether since school WiFi doesn't reach that one classroom.
That's about it. I'd probably switch to MIUI when 4G works since I'm super-happy with GO Launcher.
Using Mik-froyo v4.5 beta V.
Love the quickness
Layout of the theme (Chogardjr's Blue theme)
battery life (net's 4.3.2 bfs-sbc-havs-more) avg 16-18 hrs with moderate to light work.
CM7 nightlies
ADW EX with Ubuntu Theme.
1. looks sexy - unbuntu theme is hawt
2. performs sexy - quick and smooth
3. battery life - astounding if i turn 3g off when i'm not using it...on average I net 30-35 hours of battery life
Using my own custom ROM.
1. As stable as ever.
2. All hardware on my phone works as advertised.
3. Not sacrificing anything to achieve great battery life and a fast beautiful looking ROM.

MIUI with the Black'ups Darkness theme
It is easily the best looking ROM I have tried
It is easily the best performing ROM that I have tried
It is easily the most unique ROM I have tried
It is easily the most stable ROM I have tried
It has the best battery life (24hrs+)

I use Cyanogenmod, because:
1) It's Open-Source, and I support Open-Source software,
2) It's rock-solid stable;
3) It's fast as hell.
Stock MikFroyo (stock as in no themes)
Netarchy 4.3.1 Havs, CFS, no-sbc (gonna update to 4.3.2 with sbc)
1. Fastest, most stable sense rom
2. I lose nothing (hdmi, 4g works)
3. Regular updates and releases
I also use Myn RLS5 with MS's SBC #15 v7
What I liked about that:
1. Beautiful rom, performed well.
2. Still didn't lose anything, hdmi and 4g worked
3. Regular updates, releases and when RLS5 was released, I got it a day or 2 early because I'm a regular in the IRC chat he frequents (super freaking cool).
I will eventually add Cyanogen and MIUI to my rotation when:
1. They get 4g and hdmi working. Well, at least 4g, the reason I bought the phone in the first place.
I have used CM in the passed for my MyTouch Slide and G2. What I liked about that:
1. Stable as all hell and very good performance.
2. Battery life far surpassed the stock rom from either phone.
3. Wider customization options from regular stock Android or Sense/Expresso
I have never used MIUI or any of the other roms here.
Three things I don't like about each:
Mikfroyo 4.4
1. Battery life is abysmal unless you add battery hacks, extended battery or an SBC kernel (I'm adding an sbc kernel to help). I can get 12 hours of usage out of it if I'm careful (no facebooking, twitter, browsing...just text, phone calls and my rss widget used) but I often find myself with it plugged into my car charger or computer before the end of the day in case I go somewhere and don't want it to die.
2. There isn't nearly as many themes for this as there is for Myn's Warm. The Slayer Cyan Dragon theme is awesome, but it's really heavy on the battery usage, which is already quite bad.
3. 4g cuts out sometimes. It almost always turns back on without a reboot, but it seems when I'm in motion in my car, it struggles to keep 4g despite signal being strong in my whole city.
Myn rls5
1. Isn't as quick as MikFroyo. It performs on par (if not a little better) than stock, but doesn't have quite the zippy, iPhone-level quickness of MikFroyo
2. The widgets are themed, the apps aren't. What's the point of having a sexy, dark messaging widget when the thing glows whiter than a hospital hallway when you open it?
3. A lot of the themes actually drag down the quality of the looks of the rom. You have to look hard and spend a lot of time to find a theme that actually improves on the original theme.
CM
1. No 4g or hdmi, enough said. To their credit, they are really working hard to get it and that's why they're the best.
2. The stock widgets on stock rom suck or don't exist. No messaging widget (just the iPhone style app that opens it), facebook widget doesn't work with any known theme. You sacrifice quite a bit for performance and the original taste of vanilla in terms of extras and features...but those of us who use vanilla don't care, do we fellas? Besides, there's always handcent
3. Couldn't think of a third one. I'm a big fan of CM, even without a good messaging widget/app.
Again, haven't used MIUI or the rest so I can't give an opinion.
Also, if you feel the need to quote me on any of these and give me crap, keep in mind they are just opinions All our devs here freaking rock and all their stuff is fantastic.

Not very scientific i know but here goes, Had been using CM7 and would get a full days use (unplugged at midnight and plugged back in about 21:00) with approx 40% battery left on an average day with HydrOG3n unplugged as normal fairly normal usage and had 60% left at end of day. Typical usage involves checking twitter periodically throughout the day, a bit of gaming (15-20 mins) some ebook reading (<60 minutes) checking facebook once or twice and a bit of web surfing (45-60 mins over the day) odd texts and two to three short phone calls (less than 10 minutes total) and a bit of foursquare with GPS on, I leave wireless on all day although I'm normally only attached at home, obviously your mileage may vary. I Have tried other ROMs specifically Miui, LeeDroid and AHRD but I hate SENSE and didn't get on with any of them so cant give any definitive comment on Battery life.
i recommend android revolution too
it's keep the original UI, and make a lot of tweaks to make your phone run smoothly

I'm using LeeDrOiD HD myself and I'm very happy with it. So smooth and no issues (for me at least, some are experiencing battery drain with wifi on, but for me, it's at about 2-5 mA in standby). Great "community" around it, lots of support, great battery life. On a normal day, I usually have the screen on for about 2-3 hours (moderate use I'd say) and disconnected from charger for about 18 hours. That leaves me with about 50% battery when I go to bed.
I'm very satisfied
Another vote for LeeDroid. Great ROM, great support and great bloke!

I've tried ARHD, RCMixHD and LeeDroid, but have settled on Virtuous Unity. I run it with Juice Defender and now charge the battery every other day or even longer rather than every night! I run gmail and my work outlook exchange activesync on push settings, background data updates on facebook and play cut the rope a bit! Best Sense rom I reckon, especially if you want Sense 3. Activesync used to drain the battery like a vampire on the other roms, no problem with Virtuous Unity.
Also my wife has a DHD on stock UK rom and this is the first one that beats her for battery. Put juice defender on her's too, but mine is faster with the o/c daemon and looks much better. Can't persuade her to let me root and flash her for some reason, perhaps I should tell her I mean her phone

I use Leedroid. I looked for a clean, lean, fast and smooth ROM and found it in LeeDroid's rom. Works perfect with the sense 3 lockscreen, too (the combination of lockscreen and my own app, AppGrouper, make for the fastest applaunching experience I know of since the old PalmPilot days ).
Beatmod gingersense, speedy, clean great battery life. Looks good, sense 3.0 lockscreen aswell, best rom I've tried yet. Yet to try leedroid will have to check it out.

So after toying around with a large number of the ROMs on the Aria, I've found a couple things:
The gingerbread ROMs, including CM7, always suck my phone dry the fastest. I'm trying to get ~2 days out of it, but it just doesn't happen. With setCPU and some different profiles, along with minimal usage (~30 minutes talk time/day, maybe 30 minutes on the internet, and pretty much everything off, and maybe an hour of music) I get down to 30% or lower by the end of the day.
The GingerSense ROMs are the worst; I rarely make it through a full day with the same stats described above.
However, I've been running Liberated Aria (a FroYo ROM) for the last week and I've found it to be spectacular in terms of battery life. I'd go to bed and set the phone down with 60% battery; wake up and it's at 55%. Gingerbread would never let me go through a night without taking at least 10% of the battery.
So that's what I've found. What are your thoughts?
I haven't used any of the CM* ROMs but I have used the liberated brand ROMs. As you have found out, if you want a sense based ROM, GenePoole's Liberated 2.2.2 is the way to go. With out a doubt it is the most polished ROM with spectacular battery life. If you use it in conjunction with the Set CPU program to dynamically underclock and overclock your phone, you can't go wrong. You will get ~2 days of battery life.
I'm not sure why it isn't included in the ROM list in the pinned guide... It's the evolution of liberated 2.2, which, should be depreciated in all honesty. There is no reason to use liberated 2.2 instead of 2.2.2.
Well, 2.2 does have a much cleaner look to the status bar, and is more customized than 2.2.2 is. Also, I've run into less problems on 2.2 than I have on 2.2.2, and although it's not a big deal, it's the small things that I've seen that make me happy about 2.2 versus the later variant.
I must have misread your original post. I thought you were using 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.
Anyway, based on my own personal testing, 2.2.2 has better battery life than 2.2, so that's why I used it. But, I never really ran into any real problems on either ROM.
This place has sure got quiet in the last couple of months...
I found CM 7.2 stable to be pretty good with battery life. With moderate usage, I would get about a day and a half out of it. This was much better than earlier versions of CM7 and all CM6 ROMs. I have had the same experience with GingerSense. Never used Liberated or FR008 ROMs.

I am waffling between the two, but 2.2 has seemed nicer to me, especially the deodexed version; is there a deodexed 2.2.2?

Not sure if there is or not, I haven't really been following the dev progress since I broke my phone in January.

I think it's just an Android issue coupled with ancient battery technology. Battery life between ROMs has been abymsal, regardless of tweaks. Personally, I am a CM fan, so I've been using it almost exclusively since version 6. Liberated Aria is a great ROM for those who like Sense, but it doesn't do anything CM cannot (excluding the obvious). FWIW, I have found that the typical "tweaks" (brightness, syncing, vibrate, etc) help here and there, as well as underclocking your kernel. V6 SuperCharger also provided good results, but I recommend that regardless of your ROM.
