on tmobiles site it advertises that all the new-ish phones have the ability to use HSPA+ do i need to change my APNs on The Aria ROM??? if so What Are the new APNs
You will never be able to use HSPA+ on a Slide, T-Mobile does not claim that you will be able to either.
t-mobile does claim that you can, and you can. i have experienced 6 times faster speed since they turned on the tower near my place. i have HSPA+ at home and now average 3.5-4.5 Mbps rather than the .8 Mbps i had with standard 3G. my apn says epc.tmobile.com i do not know if there are other settings needed, but i am using CM6RC1 and getting phenomenal speeds(compared to some friends that have EVO on 4G)

That's cause sprint's "4G" is not as fast as Tmo's HSPA+...There was an article on their speeds on engadget.
that jappened to be my point, i was stating that t-mo was better(faster) and that r0manz was wrong

I'm not wrong.
There are no HSPA+ phones presently being sold in the United States, that being said you can get up to 7.2mbps on T-Mobile HSPA network at present on the Vibrant, Slide, and others
He's right they can take advantage of the speeds, but are not actually HSPA+ phones, the first one will be the t-mobile G2 as announced by t-mobile.

This HSPA+ has been pretty awesome..Out of every person I know that has tmobile and a 3G enabled phone I have been the only one able to pick it up and my wife has the Vibrant, plus several others that I know with the Slide and other android phones... It started about a week ago when I first noticed that 3G turn into an H. I am running the latest CyanogenMod and I have not altered any settings on my phone whatsoever. The only thing I have been able to come up with is that its because of the Froyo ROM... Anyone agree?? But this s**t is great! I ran a speedtest while I was at work yesterday and I almost got a 6 Mbps connection and a 1.5 Mbps upload while connected to the HSPA network!!!
But like others said earlier in the thread our Slides will not be able to take full advantage of the HSPA+ speeds and will never be able to...but Ill take it because its just not everyday that a cell phone provider gives you 6x speed boost and doesn't charge you extra for it... GO T-MOBILE!!!

I'm pretty sure the only reason you're getting the "H" instead of the "3G" logo is because in the CyanogenMOD 6 Stable release, the "3G" graphic was replaced with the "H".

I have not used froyo on the SLide, the "H" icon is included with every rom but if cyan changed the name of the H icon to replace 3G then it would make sense, but i doubt he would do that to trick people. Every rom has the H icon in the framework folder.
He did not replace it, I am running a CM6 rom and in certain areas I will pick up HSPA, but in most places I go in Huntsville, AL its 3G signal, with the 3G icon showing in my status bar.
There is also a noticable difference in browsing and download speeds when I am able to pull HSPA, so its not just displaying it in error.
On the stock ROM you never see the "H" icon, but if I look in About Phone -> Network I often see "HSDPA" under mobile network type. I assume T-Mobile has mapped the 3G icon to that network type to minimize user confusion. I also see the 3G icon when connected to a UMTS network.
As has been pointed out earlier, that doesn't mean you will get the HSPA+ speeds and in fact they haven't even rolled out HSPA+ in my area yet.
I am running the latest CM for the slide. Ever since I flashed it, I haven't seen the 3G symbol, only H. I live in Salt Lake City Utah, and according to T-Mobile, they haven't enabled HSPA+ here yet. So I'm not sure why H would be showing up instead of 3G. Since I've tested my speed using the Speedtest.net app, and it comes up with ping 103ms D:637kbps U:759kbps, I highly doubt that is HSPA+ speeds.

I thought it was the radio update that had the H in it.
Using Chiefz rom I get H when I'm by my school.

Check under settings, about phone, status and look at what it says under Mobile Network Type. If it says HSDPA you will see the H icon, if it say UMTS you will see 3G. The H Icon is showing up because it is the begginings of HSPA+ without the fiber back haul ran to the tower, or they haven't switched it on yet. The phone sees the H network and displays the H icon, it doesn't know that it isn't HSPA+ or HSDPA, if your were still stock you would only ever see 3G.
So does that mean that stock rom (I have ChiefzReloaded's modified 1.35.531 rom) still takes advantage of HSPA+ even though it will only show 3G on the status bar? Or would I have to switch to another ROM to take advantage of it?
I remember when I was testing which rom I liked, I had tried a 2.2 rom and seen the H in my status bar, but never tested the speed. At the moment, I don't get speeds faster than 750 kbps down and 70 kbps up.. really disappointed since they already have HSPA+ here in Houston (and its suburbs).

Mine says HSDPA. So I guess that is because they haven't flipped the switch here yet. Thanks for the information.
I am running a stock ROM and under mobile network type I usually see "HSDPA" even though the "3G" icon appears. The point is that on the stock ROM you will see the "3G" icon whether you are connected to a UMTS or HSDPA network, and on the CM ROM you see the "H" icon when you connect to an HSDPA network. But the icon does not limit your speed. You will still get the benefit of HSDPA (and to some degree HSPA+) networks either way.

3g = h.
h = 3g.
Only custom roms show H. But even if it "just" shows 3g, you're still connected to the same network.
It's like the difference between pancakes and flapjacks. Some people call em pancakes. Some people call em flapjacks.
In the end they're the same damn thing.
^ true, but sometimes in my area I will have 3G, sometiems H, and sometimes Edge... (on my Nexus One). Seems odd that the phone makes a distinction between 3G and H if there is no difference. I also prefer the H and wish it showed on my phone (Vibrant this time) instead.

The distinction sometimes refers to basic UMTS, but at least in the United States, every UMTS tower has HSPA upgrades. The reason the distinction even started was because in Europe, there were many towers that were UMTS-only without HS[D/U]PA upgrades. That's not the case here.
On the other hand, now ROMS sometimes show H for HSPA+ areas. That is all fine and dandy, except that your Vibrant doesn't go faster than 7.2mbps HSDPA, or 5.6mbps HSUPA. It's not like when your phone is showing "H", that you're magically going to get faster speeds than your phone was designed to achieve.
So when it comes back to the OPs question, of "connecting" to a faster network, it's irrelevant. Once you're on 3g, it's all the same network. HSPA+ and HSDPA and UMTS are all the same network - just different data upgrades. And your phone will ALWAYS try to access the fastest data upgrade that it can.

it's depend on the phone i think. Before i switch to the vibrant (3G display), I used HD2.
On the HD2, i got H notification all the time. And speedtests on both phones yielded same results.
^^ great read, and I understood all of it... I just never understood why sometimes I got 3G and sometimes I got H in the notification bar, makes sense I suppose. I realize the same speeds were usually achieved.
Hi, not a big problem as I am normally on wifi but I've noticed that my GSII is constantly dropping of HSDPA every few seconds and if I do a speed test it only gets around 300kbps.
Now I have an LG Optimus on the same network, same room and that stays on HSDPA and gets around 1800kbps on downloads.
Any idea what would cause this?

Seems to work just fine here at least. Granted this is at a place with good HSDPA coverage.
Sorry to tell you that but it seems like a bug in the phone, i do have the same issue, i surfed the couple of forums and the problem is spreading, hoping it's not a hardware issue.

I think it's a network restriction. People in another thread were having similar problems with buying the handset and the contract separately meaning the data plan they were on was only at 300kbps.
If you've got another handset that gets a higher speed, switch the sim cards and see if that changes anything.
My phone will only download around 360kbps but will upload at 1mb, so puzzled as to why it would be a network restriction (hoping it is as I'm not happy and still within my 14 day cooling period) ringing o2 later...

No, it's not a network restriction. Not on Three anyway. I've just taken the PAYG SIM out of my LG which is getting around 1800kbps and put it in the Galaxy SII and it now only gets 64kbps!!! It's constantly flickering between 3G and HSDPA. It's definitely a phone issue.
i had posted in the other thread about how it switches down to 3G when it's not being used and instantly switch over to H+ when in use. There were no performance issues
Also on AT&T network, when it's first started/activated it took a little bit of time before network performance improved both on day one and when i switched over to an unlimited data plan
Oh I forgot to mention. I reported this issue to Samsung yesterday but don't hold your breath!
The man I spoke to didn't seem to understand what I was saying and when I advised him that there were many similar problems and issues being faced by people on this forum, he simply stated that he had never heard of the site. I gave him the web address but doubt they will ever look in to it.
If your facing this issue, then I would ring them and report it. That's the only way they are going to find out about the issue.
Normal behaviour for it to sit on 3G, only switches to H+ once it's in full flow.
This usually impacts speedtests and such.
Best way to test is to download a file off a fast server.
Same thing use to happen with my Desire.

I have numerous 3G devices here and none of them cuts of HSDPA so erratically. If I start to stream AudioGalaxy on my LG Android, the HSDPA stays on as does my Huawei MiFi. The Galaxy S II is dropping connection every few seconds.
It doesn't make sense for two Android phones in the same room with the same network to get completely different speeds. Maybe a small difference but to get one having 1800kbps and the other 64kbps shows there is a problem.
I've just updated the phone to KE2 and it's made no difference. Will have to wait to see what Samsung say.

Hey guys I have an imported sgs2 here in Canada and hopeing to get my hands on the bell modem.
Let me know if someone can rip it.

Same here. A Bell modem will be much appreciated. I'm just running on XXKE4 and I'm suffering from the 3G/H+ disconnection problem. Tried a few other modems but still doesn't seem to help.
I'm also getting the intermittent 3G/H+ switching. Sometimes even on 3G, I get no data and it times out.
I'm on Fido network.
I have modem XXKE7 and kernal XWKF3.
Lol i will be so funny when you finally get bell modem and realise that it still switches between 3g and h+ periodically.
Lmfao h+ turns on to indicate the data is active youre still on 3g. That is your background apps pooling data periodically or when browser loads the page it will revert to 3g icon till you press next link and here we go again.
For disconects upgrade to xxkg2 modem and after that blame your network.
Im running on fido in gta just fine except fir rogers coverage gapps in cetrain areas for example in dixie/rathburn area youll get full 3g signal but data is very slow and at times nonexistant.

I used an unlocked UK GS2 on Telus, and the only trouble I've had is with disconnections, I realized the phone switches between H+,H, and 3G to save battery.
It seems leading up the release of the GS2 by Bell changes must have been made to the RAN as the data disconnection problem happens a lot less frequently than it used to.
Although I've used it on Rogers with no issues so hopefully the newer firmware totally removes the issue for me on Telus.
I am getting a lot of disconnects (total disconnect with restart) with KG2 on Bell in Toronto. KG1 seemed a lot more solid.
Will see what modem bell launches with tomorrow - somehow I don't think it will be KG2
Since I've been running the KG2 modem it seems to be a bit better.
But a proper radio from bell will be the best.

Disabling fast dormancy at first appears to work for me but then after some time it dropped its connection to the tower, however with fast dormancy disabled it seems to regain it's data connection much faster after the drop when compared to before.
Also I've noticed that the speedtest results are double with fast dormancy disabled and it seems to be using a bit more battery.
I have a problem with using this phone on Telus. Get a script error and it looses data and then signal all together and it happens about 5 times a day. Anything I can do?

There are no special carrier branded radios, just try some till you find one that works for you in your area.
And the phone will swap between 3g and h as 3g uses less power the h so it's best to only kick upto it when needed

More like we are waiting for a region (Canada/NA) specific radio that would work well. I've just flashed KG3 (Cognition 1.3) for a day...so far I have not detected the old 3G/H+ disconnection problem that I've suffered from KE4 - KE7.

Yes, that's normal. Your phone should switch to HSPA when you NEED data, but otherwise, it's going to be on 3G.
Ok this 3g H thing makes better sense now but it seems in my area it takes a while to reconnect the H so the internet works I wish it would just stay on the H full blast as i have it plugged in so don't care about battery.
And I would love to have the option to shut off 2 g, not just 2g only, i but i will figure it out.
Otherwise this phone has a strong signal where i am but i wish it would just stuggle on HSPA+, even if it drops out rather than switch to edge on me.

Where I live there is a pretty crappy signal, on my blackberry, i have it on "3g only" now i get a steady internet but at like 2 bars. I wish I could do this on my nexus so i can tell the phone HSPA+ only, that way it will stay connected to that only, when it lost the signal it does switch over to GSM/EDGE
In other words, at home I have a strong GSM signal and weak HSPA+, it wants to drop to 2 g all the time, that sucks. My blackberry just struggles and keeps reconnecting to the 3 g, this is much better for me.
I just wonder isn't there a way to have all the available radios listed, a app better than "phone info" as it doesn't do this so it is like
GSM/EDGE
3G
HSPA+
UMA
LTE
and you can check a box and you phone stay on that network ?
I notice in a network monitor app that my phone says it uses
WHSPA
UMA
GSM
and
UNKNOWN
so it is flipping threw radios because of the weak signals, maybe the phone is faulty i don't know
When my nexus is on HSPA+, even with no bars it is crazy fast compared to waht i am used to, even if the signal comes and goes it take to long between
changing radios or whatever to get back on the 4g

Every T-Mobile phone I've owned has done this. Including the nexus one.
Initially the nexus one didn't show the change in the status bar. CM added the change and I'm not sure if stock did that later.
The sgs2 doesn't show the change in the status bar. But its happening. T-Mobile just leaves it showing "4G" for marketing and to not confuse people. Because it obviously does. I can't tell ya how many times I have answered this question between the galaxy nexus and nexus 4.

Thanks for the heads up, I guess they need to keep it on 4g for Marketing reasons, I use my phone for Marketing reasons to promote the 4g service but, now that I have a consistent toggle between the 3g and H showing It's not that good of a marketing tool. Sooooo, CM I need a mod lol. Thanks again EL

A user created a mod to change the H to 4g. If you are running CM or PA you can use it. Its at the end of the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103171

Cool, the H is fine I just think it shows the toggle to 3g to much. SGS2 never did that.

Alternatively you can change the 3g icon to an H or 4g as well. Just extract the systemui.apk. copy the H icon and rename it to whatever the 3g icon is called. Wrap the apk back up and push it back.

This happens to me and it causes a problem. It is a brand new Nexus 4 and I am on Wind Mobile in Canada.
The 3G/H switch actually causes me problems - every time I go to use my phone's data, it takes maybe... 15 seconds and a few attempts before I can get online. It happens every time I go to use my data.
It's extremely annoying as you can imagine - what can I do? Is there any way to force my phone to remain on H all the time?
I am running stock 4.2.2
thanks

I think I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm with Telus in Canada and I experience the same thing. Except for me the network always sits on HSPA, and when I go to use the data (in any form - IM, reddit, browsing) it switches to HSPA+ before loading the page. And that transition takes several attempts and 15 seconds sometimes. I've been searching for a solution ever since I got this phone. Glad to see it's not just me (or even Telus it seems)...
I used to have an HTC Desire, and the same sim and APN settings on that phone did not have this delay. And the only difference I can think of is that the Desire stays on regular HSPA, whereas the nexus switches to HSPA+ when a data connection is attempted. I have read some posts for Samsung devices that allow you to force it to use only HSPA. It was like typing *#30179# or something and getting a menu, but that combination does nothing on the Nexus4. Will keep searching, collectively I'm sure we can figure this out!
My phone never shows 3G.. only H or E.. goes straight to E from H. Weird.

OMG I'm so glad I found your posts. I'm on Fido (Montreal) and I'm having the same issues. It takes a while to switch from 3G to H sometimes, and sometimes it just seems to not switch at all! For example, if I'm in WhatsApp and I send a message, sometimes it'll just stay there waiting for a good long time before it's actually sent. It's like the phone doesn't "realize" that there's an app requesting to send/receive data! Super annoying, and definitely an issue that can be reproduced. It happens to me in WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and even the Gmail app.
same issue here... it takes almost a min to transition from 3g to H and visversa
