[Q] Adding other folders to res directory - Android Software Development

How do I accomplish this in Eclipse? I mean, adding folders works but as soon as i add anything, it gives me an error. Is there something I'm supposed to change?

As I recall, the folder name and file names must be in lower case... IE: Images\imageName.png will give you an error, but images\imagename.png will not.
I ran across this early on in my learing to program with Eclipse/Android.
Try that and see if your error goes away.

I don't use Eclipse, but is it that they have to be in lower case, or is it merely case sensitive?

OOOPs I need some help please

Somehow I have removed all the shortcuts from my programs folder, i.e. they no longer show up when i press start, all i get is
Today
Programs
Settings
If I go into programs all i see is the games folder
I can still run the programs from their defualt folders.
Anyone know a quick way to reinstall all these shortcutS or am I going to have to do them all manually ?
Not sure i even know what files types (shortcuts) or where they should be.
I am assuming they should be in /windows/programs as it is nothing there ?
Help
Cheers, Numb
re
OK sorry for wasting yer time, admins remove or delete as you feel fit.
For the record though, not that anyone is likely to ever do this but....
This is how I believe I caused the problem
It started when I was trying to load an irc app on my phone.
I needed to put the app in /windows/startmenu and run from there
I copied across from my desktop
Using resco explorer I went into /windows/startmenu but it wasn't there.
So foolishly i started playing around and somehow in properties decided to untick/tick the hidden box for attributes
The result was that all files in /start menu/program folder were hidden
So by changing it back (somehow!!) through the properties, attributes, it's now all back.
So if your still reading this (fools) sorry, user error on a big scale.
Cheers, Numb

Benefits and drawbacks to more vs. less packages?

Sorry if this is a n00b question, but I did a search and I can't seem to narrow down the results enough to find an answer. Anyway, OEMs tend to stick all apps into 1 or 2 folders, usually OEMAPPS and also sometimes Default.
What is the benefit of doing that vs. making a separate folder package for each and every app, other than being less modular? I find putting every app into its own folder with its own .dsm is simpler to keep track of. However, OEMs must throw them all in one folder for a reason. Does putting them all in one folder save space on the device because there's only one UUID vs. many?
I noticed there are a ton of files in the Windows folder whose filenames are UUIDs. Are these related every installed package?

Hiding folders created by apps?

Hi guys,
I know this is an issue for many alike myself, I HATE how some android apps and the system automatically create folder on the SDcard (tmp, LOST.DIR, albumthumbs, adobe etc) and even worse have stupid names for some of them. Im quite the perfectionist so i really would like to have them gone (hidden) or at least renamed. As hiding them is the easier option I want to know if this is even possible?
I've tried mounting my SDcard and changing those files to hidden, but in Android they still display. I've tried the '.' method of hiding but this causes errors for some apps as the folders aren't being located correctly.
I've searched around with no solution as of yet so if anybody has a way please let us know.
no stupid comments about hiding your porn and **** please.
I hate to not be any help, but I would also like a way to do this.
I hate looking into my SD card and seeing a bunch of random sh!t.
so bump i guess
Even though it don't bother me i don't understand why developers don't do like linux apps and use /sdcard/.twidroid type of folder?
This drives me insane as well. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. This is on the developers of the apps to fix.
Does Google actually recommend a specific folder to put these files, something like .config or .cache like in Linux?
It would have been so easier if all these folder went inside a single folder like program files .. I m too frustated bocs these app folders
They recommend /Android/data/<package_name>/files/
see: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesExternal
One option is to override what the below two routines return. (AOSP code)
getExternalStorageDirectory() and
getExternalFilesDir()
i.e. set it to /sdcard/data/
ps: I remember asking this a year ago, still bugs me that nobody has done it yet.

+1 This would be a good idea.

Can No Longer Open Pictures or Picture Attachments

I hope you don't mind answering a question for me or pointing me in the right direction. I turned off Sense UI to save battery life and use the Windows Default setting. On my Home screen, the category Pictures appears and if I swipe to the left or right, the thumbnails appear. However, if I tap the picture to open it, I get the following message:
"The file 'IMAG002' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstaling or restoring this file."
This issue came about after trying to move all my photos from the HD2 to a folder on my desktop. I'm not sure if I accidentally moved/deleted an essential file, but it's almost impossible to view photos unless I switch back to Sense UI. I scoured the forums for an hour with no luck, but I would appreciate any assistance you could provide.
If it helps, I'm using the ROM version (22.May.2010 WWE). Thanks!
Well you could try copying all the files to your desktop, then reformat the memory stick.
Taking for granted that you have downloaded 'Omarket' for your handset (an app that lets you download many more apps), search for File Explore Extension (found under Utilities/Plugins).
This will not install with an app icon to your start menu, it simply expands the functions of the existing file explorer. Once installed, if you click and hold the file giving you trouble, one of the options will allow you to assign any of the programs to open the file types of your choice. Obviously the assigned program must first be able to accommodate the file type for this to work.
This is the easiest (and most beneficial) solution I could think of. Hope I helped
Thanks everyone! SirPhunkee advised me that I was missing the "album.cache" file in my DCIM\MEDIA100 folder. I cleared the memory card and started over from scratch. Ultimately this corrected the issue. Thanks again!
Spoo

Trying to understand file system

I use Solid Explorer and am not rooted. When I look at ways to get to a "file" at root, I see:
Root/sdcard/file
Root/storage/sdcard0/file
Root/storage/emulated/legacy/file
Root/storage/emulated/internal memory/file
Root/mnt/sdcard/file
Why so many and what does it all mean? Can I delete any of the folders? Any of them open in my browser if the file is an html file with file:///

I would not recommend trying to delete any of the folders; most of them are basically symlinks, and deleting them will NOT reclaim storage. As to understanding the filesystem after the move to 'multi-user android 4.2', I have problems in that aspect myself. Indeed, on my (rooted) nexus, I have difficulties in getting my folders visible for other applications (where on 4.1 they were very visible indeed).
As one of the cracks on this forum, Chainfire, who releases the StickMount app, has similar problems (he has not been able to make StickMount work yet on Android 4.2), I guess there are some real questions out there.
Chances are, within the next few days or weeks, more is known about the way the filesystem is working, and perhaps tips as how to make it better will come floating about.
For now though, I would just "sit still" if I were you, and just ignore all the other ways, and just use one of them.
(And which one? I guess I would go for /sdcard/file myself...
Kind regards,
Roel
Happy I'm not the only one. Before the update "Root/storage/sdcard0/file" seemed to be the path. Now it looks like each app chooses it's path randomly. I would guess many developers are pulling their hair out (or cursing Google)
I think I've got my head round the symbolic links but can't, along with tcat007, understand the reasoning. Another question that I hope is proper here is "How does Windows 8 (and earlier) decide what is "Internal Storage" - I've got a subdirectory that can be seen through either the sdcard or storage paths but will not display in W8.
