Ok I need help as I have successfully got permanent root with S=OFF long time ago and using Ice Glacier 1.1.6 Theme currently. So I found this new stock based kernel by Faux123 that OC it to 1.8GHz. I have followed the instruction exact and rebooted and then it got stuck on MyTouch4G screen logo? What went wrong? Everything was successful, I can't post it in development section as I don't have 10 posts.
Anyone? I don't know what happend but anyways I reverted back to Ice Glacier by reflashing it. Anyone has any info? how come the instruction did not work for me?
Could someone ask in the development section or someone who does alot of flashing and has idea can fill me in? I want the 1.8GHz kernel but I won't reattempt unless someone assure me here.
NVM, thank god the thread only had 5 pages and it wasn't that long. As I read everything and it states people are having problem by following the instruction for wiping the cache and davlik. Guess this kernel still has some bugs to be worked out.
Further investigating as why it wouldn't stick I went to update ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5 from 2.1.5.2 but it seems I can't even do that following True's instruction.
As after installing from sdcard, reboot going inside Rom Manager. When I select All ClockworkMod Recoveries I get message saying "No legacy recoveries found, Are you connected to the internet?"
Now if I click on Flash ClockworkMod Recoveries (shows below that Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2). So once reflashing it> picking Mytouch 4G> Successful. It now shows Current and Latest Recovery below. Then I went back to All ClockworkMod Recoveries now I get the 2.5.1.4 which I was originally missing and when I click it I get "An error occurred while flashing your recovery." Ill go try to manually install it and retry the kernel.
Hmmm flashed ClockworkMod 3.0.0.0 and tried it though there but the kernel again was successfully installed but stuck at Mytouch4G Logo. Has anyone able to work this? POS 10post limit...
Hmmm also just did kernel flash without wipe cache/davlik its still fail, WTF? Going back to regular should have done backup lol at least I wouldn't have wasted my time... SOB
don't know why you're having issues with the kernel it flashed first go for me but flashing CWM Recovery 3.0.0.0 while still being on Android 2.2 or 2.2.1 is gonna cause you issues for sure. 2.5.1.2 is for all Froyo ROMs 3.xxx is for Gingerbread/2.3 and 2.3.1 ROM.
That was not the point as 3.0.0.5 failed completely even after successful installation as I was not able to update to 2.1.5.4 if you look around alot of user is having issue. I think the image for it is stored in ClockworkMod's server IDK why they don't offer image we can just use...
I tried both way to install kernel but both failed as reported by folks also. What I don't get is how did "some" people install it and other couldn't? They were also on Ice Glacier 1.1.6 as mostly folks who can't install it is on IG1.1.6 could be some how related to Clockworkmod? Why did that BS issue also go out today? Where are the dev's? IG dev = missing, the kernel dev = missing? Its like all dev closing eyes as the Clockworkmod issue is like blackout.
Which method did you use for rooting your phone? Do you have engineering bootloader and use the gfree method that grankin01 post that is stickie in development section?

I checked through 100s of post tonight and could not find the answer to this and am in need of some help. I attempted to install a Cyanogen Nightly tonight through Rom Manager with no prior knowlege of the issues with CW 2.5 vs. CW 3.0. Stupid I know.
So natuaraly, when the download finished and Rom Manager tried to install, my MT4G just hung at the white boot screen. Through previous posts, the directions were simple to reflash the previous CW Recovery through Fastboot and reflash the Rom.
Well thats where the problem is.... When I attempt to flash ANY Rom earlier than 3.0.0.5, it will say OKAY in CMD, however the phone will never boot into the Recovery. I even tried fastboot erase recovery then reinstalled and still nothing.
So i decided to go a different root and reinstalled 3.0.0.5 to see if there was any work around through there. After i install 3.0 through Fastboot, I am able to go into Recovery, however when I select ANY option no matter what, the hat and the gear icon stay in the background and nothing happens.
I am very confused and lost and am hoping someone here will have had the same issue and can help me get my phone back in order.
Thanks in advance guys!

I havent had that issue exactly, but I might be able to help wlk you through getting this fixed. Ive had problems more than once myself on recovery, and helped a couple others solve other issues on here. If you want, add me on google talk (same username as on xda), and Ill walk you through it. Might have to wait till the morning, though, as Im probably gonna head to bed soon.
Fastboot 2.5 recovery and reflash froyo rom. If you decide to install CM7 again - read, search and make sure that you understand what you're doing. It has been stated at least few dozen times that Rom Manager is useless with gingerbread until Koush updates it.
Same Issue??
I believe my issue sounds similar.
I tried to go from Iced Glacier up to CM7. When I did I attempted to use the Clockwork Recovery 2.5 and of course it didn't work. Then I tried to upgrade it to 3.0.0.5. Now when I try to reboot into Clockwork recovery the phone just stays on the MyTouch 4G splash screen. The only way to get around it is use the Power/Volume down button and click on FASTBOOT and then select REBOOT.
The phone then boots in Iced Glacier. I have redownloaded ROM Manager and attempted to FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. But it still won't load into recovery.
Essentially I need some step by step help to get back to clockworkmod recovery. I'm not too worried if I need to wipe everything. Just looking for the ability to restore again.
Alternatively I'm interested in upgrading to CM7 but not sure how I could do that without recovery working. I would also ask if you can give step by step instructions it would be much appreciated as I'm still pretty new to this.
Thanks!
I also have the similar problem. I have installed the Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 and have rooted my phone before i was trying to install the gingerbread version. I made a recovery backup. i tried to restore the phone with that backup image but it still hung up with that "t-mobile mytouch " white splash screen.
What should i do now ? i have no idea how to bring my phone back to life :/

Sounds like both of you should of never of done this. This has been discussed a few times, and the end result is always the same.....
Download the correct Recovery image (which can be found in the Development section) and install it to your phone by using the ADB commands, in the fastboot mode. you can find a quick and painless way to set those up in my signature. Once you have installed the recovery image you can boot into hBoot and select recovery. from there you can flash CM7 and the gapps. Once you have done all that download the official clockwork ROM manager from the market and flash his current recovery image.
I'm getting an error "An error occurred while flashing your recovery." when I try to apply ClockworkMod recovery 2.6.0.1. No problems applying AR 2.2.1 or CWM 3.0.0.5.
Any ideas?
Already tried factory restore (wipe) and 2 different ROMs.

the 2.6.0.1 is the current recovery. This one backs up your wimax keys.
I know 2.6.0.1 is current. That's why I want to flash it.

I'm assuming you are trying to flash through ROM Manager? Never worked for me either. I flashed mine through fastboot, you just need to find the .img for 2.6.0.1. A google search should help.
Just download rom manager from the market. You can flash it from there.

Yes, trying from manager and getting that error. Where can I find the IMG file? Right now I have CWM 3.0.0.5. Should I go back to 2.6.0.1?
Koush posted this last month explaining why this is an issue... it's gonna grow until others follow suit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897026
Thread has link to all CM issue
CM updated to 3.0xx yesterday and is not supporting older versions - you can still find them, just will lose support
i noticed this the other day but then yesterday i had to restore to stock (i made a back up right after i rooted so i can always go back to the beginning) and when i reinstalled rom manager from the market the older recoveries where on there and i got it flash back to 2.5.7.
Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I updated my Clockworkmod Recovery today and I am now unable to restore it to the 2.6.0.1 version I had been running. I've searched the forum and found numerous .zip files and .img files but they are either broken or I am not going through the flashing process correctly. I followed the directions posted alongside the files but still cannot fix this. Could anyone help?
I want to flash CM7, but everytime I try flashing Clockwork recovery 3, it ends up staying at 2.5.1.2. What am I doing wrong? I tried flashing it from ROM Manager and that didn't help, and I don't know if I can flash it with the fastboot method since I'm using CWR already. What can I do?
Additional notes: Right now, I'm running CM6 RC2. And my phone looks sexy.
Like you I also came across that issue but trying to install kernel in Ice Glacier. Now what you want to do is install it manually via console. Check my other thread all you need is the flash image and clockworkmod recovery. I myself flashed ClockworkMod 3.0.0.0 as other howoto failed and True's didn't stick.

true's method seems to be broken for now, but he has posted that he will be looking into the issue as soon as he get home.

Go here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916930
And hit on the link to download the cwm 3.xxxx
Once the file is downloaded use root explorer, navigate to /sdcard/downloads/ and find the recovery. Make sure that it shows as .img and not as .zip. if it is a zip then unzip to get the .img file
Select the recovery and change the name to some easier name like f.e cwmrec3 (nnow u will have a cwmrec3.img file).
Move it to /sdcard (root) for ease of method
Open terminal emulator and do
Su (enter) (# will change for $)
flash_image recovery /sdcard cwmrec3.img
Wait for it to go to the next line.
Reboot to recovery and ur text will now be orange. You now haz recovery 3.xxxx
Also, note that if u enter rom manager it will still say that you have cwm 2.xxx that does not matter though as long as ur recovery txt is orange and not green

the fastboot method will work if you have CWM 3.5.1.3 already. I did that this morning, and it worked like a charm.
so I was able to do the easy cw method installing the zip from recovery then choosing 2.5.1.4, but after a few runs with the latest builds of CM7 i was having major issues with my mobile data connection jumping from H to 3G, each time lagging out my connection and making streaming videos, etc impossible to play. So I reflashed to stock, and my H returned to normal. So i thought I'd give it another shot, rooted, downloaded ROM Manager, flashed to 2.5.1.2 smooth, then tried the above method. When I tried to load the 2.5.1.4 in ROM manager, it said "An error occurred while flashing your recovery." So I tried the terminal, and no matter how I rename the file, and I know I followed the instructions flawlessly, it says flash_image: not found. So while ROM Manager seems completely capable of flashing to the 2.5.1.2 version, nothing seems to work to get me past it. What could I be missing?

Thats because you flashed back to stock and stock roms do not have "flash_image" on /system/bin
Download this
http://db.tt/Rv63e76
Use root explorer and paste it to /system/bin
Try terminal again

Okay, so where to start...
I have a MT4G (of course) i love it dont get me wrongand wanted to mess around with it. i permarooted it via VISONary + and everything was working fine. i wanted to flash a different kernal and wanted to do a nandoird backup before i did anything else. but i needed clockwork to do this (correct me please if im wrong) so i downloaded rom manager flashed it. and went to boot into recovery and it does this icon with a phone and a "!" on the screen...it cant boot into recovery. and i dont know why, and now i just want to go back to my stock recovery but i cant cause i dont know how. ive tried terminal commands... and i tried to learn adb and fastboot but am very lost. basically i want a nandroid of my rooted stock ROM... any help would be much appreciated
The reason is because you need to turn s=off for any of those to work.

Read the guides.
1. The phone with the red triangle icon is from the stock Recovery program. Stock recovery does nothing except show you that screen, unless a special file is found on the SD card, used for a complete system restore. Your flash of ClockworkMod Recovery was unsuccessful.
2. When you do go get past the S=Off phase, and are ready to once again attempt to install CWM Recovery, be sure you install the CORRECT version. CWMR 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread (Android 2.3) based ROMs only! Don't install 3.0.0.5 expecting it to function properly for the Stock ROM, for Iced Glacier, or any other Froyo (Android 2.2) based ROMs. Those all require CWMR 2.x. A higher version number does not mean better. For example, if you are planning to install CM7, back up with CWMR 2.x, then flash CWMR 3.x before installing CM7.
(There is a special, unique to MT4G version of CWMR that handles both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, called "3.0.0.6". You can find threads on it in the Development subforum.)
EDIT: This is not a result of ROM Manager, this is a result of installing Overstock 1.4.3 which also installs CWM recovery.
Not trying to be rude or anything, but I don't remember this ever not working.
I am having issues with 3e. No matter how carefully I follow the instructions (flash->reboot->reinstall packages always fails) when flashing recovery from current Rom Manager and Premium License, it does not work. Additionally, the premium license is persistent in my applications list and no premium ROMs ever show up in my download list. Even when I select Vibrant MTB and either 2.x or 3.x, all I get is a message that states current recovery will be used. I'm still going thru posts for a possible solution.
Try putting this in the root of your internal SD, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice.
Yeah, I was misinformed. This is not a result of ROM Manager, this is a result of installing Overstock 1.4.3 which also installs CWM recovery.
If anyone want to do this it is really simple with the SGS kernel flasher app. Download your overstock kernel of choice from here or your choice of kernel that includes CWM from the dev bible, unzip it, move the zimage to the internal phone memory and then choose that file as your kernel with the SGS Flasher.
Note: I have not been successful with going back to stock kernel when I tried to but that may have been because I didn't disable the lag fix.

I'm 100% stock on 2.2Froyo except for root/unlock and am puzzled by this. I know it's not ROM Manager because it worked on my first SGS4G which died and totally bricked after a week (TMO exchanged it happily cause it wouldn't even go into download mode or charge).
What's in this update you linked? Cause I'm smart, but not as smart as most of the posters here and I recognize only a couple things in the file.
It installs CWM.
Are you using a Vibrant or SGS4G?
SGS 4G for TMobile.
BTW... I totally appreciate the help here. I don't know the ins-n-outs of the android phones like I do IOs, not that I'm all that up to date on that either.
Update... Still does not work. I get the failed signatures error and the update is aborted. I tried doing a factory reset and re-rooting the phone in case something didn't work correctly and get the same error. At this point, it's all gravy since the only thing I really needed was the unlock but now I'm in a "I just want to know how this works" mode.
Thanks for the help.
Ok yeah that my be the problem since that zip is for the Vibrant. So just to be straight, you are unable to get CWM on your SGS4G?
That's correct. I can't apply any update.zip nor does flashing CWM recovery work. It says it's flashing but then when I do the 3 button reboot to get to recovery, it's the 3e version still and when I go to reinstall packages, it starts but then fails as it tries to verify signatures.
