i know how the dust in getting in our phones, there is a defective seal between the body & the lcd. how do i have proof? i went to install a screen protector today and the solution leaked underneath the lcd and leaves staining and a fog. i had to put my hero in a bag of dry rice to preserve & dry it. no other phone i have had, had this issue when installing a screen protector, im only using a small amount of water spray too, not a ton.

come on man, im serious here, this is an issue that htc should of fixed. they wouldn't sell those screen protectors to damage your phone. i only used a very small amount of the spray they provide, you have to use the credit card to squeeze the bubbles out.

I actually agree, for some reason I am just unable to pass up an opportunity to give you $h1t
Fortunately I have been one of the lucky few who have no dust under my screen and my call/end button paint shows no wear at all. My hero looks as new today as it did on 3/12/2009 when I got it.
I was serious though about getting photographic documentation, not sure what you would do with it but if you ad an opportunity to tell someone who could do something about it you would be glad you took the pics (ie, emailing someone at htc or sprint, or even proving the defect to customer service in order to get a replacement)
*edit- You bought the screen protector from HTC? I put a full zagg shield on mine a couple months ago and was very paranoid about the solution getting down in the crack between the bottom of the screen and the button plate but I was lucky, no problems.

dude, I think you need some perspective. You have insurance, right? Forget the deductible, if you go in and use the correct words in the correct order you can easily walk out with a brand new phone... just saying.

probably, yes.... i just checked the phone and the fog is gone but there is a highly noticeable water stain under the lcd at the top left corner of the phone. im trying to dry it out as we speak. too late to go to sprint today but i may call them and htc to see what they are willing to do. i assume the invisible shields do not void your warranty at all since some sprint stores & best buy carry them?

The experience you had today will in no way void your warranty unless you let it. You are the customer, be a customer who's business they want to keep and they will bend over backwards to help you, I have proven this theory many times

ok, it should of been fixed the minute they knew about the dust getting under there. i think i have proof of a defective seal, when a small amount of spray causes staining & fog underneath. i just called htc and their warranty department is closed, figures!

Eh...good luck. You've got water underneath your screen via a third party screen protective solution.
The liquid wouldnt have entered your screen had you not administered it. Water can creep through even the smallest of openings.
I highly doubt things are going to work in your favor if you enter a Sprint store. I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint location that advocates a screen solution that requires even the smallest amount of liquid since liquid damage is something that must be handled by the insurance company, Asurion, that many wireless providers work through.
Its worth a shot. Just dont be completely disappointed if the Sprint store doesnt respond in your favor.

Sprint stores as well as Best Buy both install screen protectors, so I doubt that would be an issue.
Umm...not to be rude here, but that's been a known issue for a while. It's not new. Anyone who's had the dust issue (myself included) has known about the seal under the screen leaking.
Yes it's defective. If you put up enough of a fuss they'll replace it with a refurb which will likely have the same problem.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I bought mine at best buy, got it replaced, and haven't had the problem since. It appears HTC had a bad batch (well a lot of them, really) for about 6-8 months. They fixed the problem after that, but the good ones are mixed in with the old ones. It's a crapshoot as to whether you'll get one without a dust problem.
I always get screen protectors that have built in sticky solution. never had the dust problem either.

I'll just put it like this, its not that I don't believe people are having these issues its just that they are exaggerating it completely out of proportion.
I have a Htc Hero(With Google) made in 2009, came with the 1.56 RUU Installed. I have 1 (READ 1) dead pixel on my entire screen, the case has no paint chips, no dust under the screen, buttons show no wear(its not paint...), my speakers work and sound great, I get a full signal in 90% of places, Calls never drop, hardware is fast if you know what your doing and tweak it, you can run 2.1 perfectly if you know what your doing, no battery issues whatsoever.
So yeah... a dead pixel... I'm completely returning my hero to Sprint for that. (not)
Click to collapse
I also have a dead pixel. And I'm not returning it for that reason, either.
But I feel I need to set you straight on a few issues.
#1. The dust issue is real. While I personally didn't wait until I had half my screen covered with it to replace it, I've seen pics (here I believe) where the phone is virtually unusable due to the dust. I had a small amount of dust. But why shouldn't I return it? Why should I spend a bunch of money on a defective piece of hardware? If it's not properly functioning when brand new I'm returning it. Which is what I did, and lucked out.
#2. Button wear. I've never had this problem (only had the phone a couple of months) but my wife has. Whether it's paint, or dye, or what have you, those things can and do flake. There are also images of it on these forums if you search for them.
#3. Never had a speaker problem.
#4. You seem to be extremely fortunate about where you live/drive/work then. Because signal issues happen if you do any travelling.
#5. I don't get people with battery problems either. I have the stock battery and can go all day (12-14 hours) and use 50% or less of the battery.
Anyhow, I doubt the people that are having the issues you mention are exaggerating, and at least in the case of the flaking buttons and dust I know from experience they're as bad as people make it out to be.

exactly, plus they sell them as well. it wouldn't void my warranty under water damage because the water indicator sticker is intact and there are no signs of water damage. i doubt a small amount of solution would seep under the screen unless it was defective. im about to call sprint and demand a brand new hero or a samsung moment as im on my 3rd phone now. besides the fact the 3rd phone they sent me was suppose to be new and it's a refurb with over 700 calls made from it. im really about to not buy htc or sprint anymore and maybe move to another carrier.

I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint Store that would install a screen protector that uses any form of a liquid. The screen protectors that Sprint stores sell are a stick film. Nothing that requires liquid to apply.
Best Buy stores do sell and install these...but you're not going to Best Buy for a replacement unit generally. I'm sure they'll turn you away.
well forget sprint, they said the most that will happen is to give me another refurbish, they need to all be on the same page. some say you get new phones and some say they give you used ones. after 3 phones im entitled to a new one or another comparable model. so i guess my last hope is to call htc on monday, after that im dropping my contract and going to t-mobile or verizon. maybe the issue is they give people used phones and not new ones, they need to start backing up their warranties because it seems to me they are just cheap as hell.

all replacements were done through sprint and my 2nd one was a brand new phone. the tech told me last week that if my 3rd one acts up im entitled to a another compatible phone model such as the moment. now they are telling me something different. to me the $7 insurance i pay for every month is apparently worthless.

Yep the 3 phones for virtually nothing compared to how much you would of had to pay.
Why do we even bother with the $7?
So, here's my story.
The screen "died" on my Fascinate last Friday (4 days ago). When I took it off charge in the morning (I always charge it overnight), I noticed some discoloration in the center of the screen. Phone was still functional, but I really didn't look into much as I was leaving for work. After about 2 hours, I looked at the phone again and the screen was much worse. It now had an image burned on it and it was getting darker. Touch screen also stopped working about this time. Well, after another hour or two, I couldn't see anything on the screen except for a small bit at the very top of the screen.
I called the Verizon store over lunch and explained what happened, they patched to another tech support guy who had me pull the battery, which helped nothing. So, he put through to overnight me a replacement, which is arriving today. Well, I picked the broken phone this morning which has been powered off all weekend, and when I looked at it in the light I could see the screen underneath is cracked in an arch at the top. I have no idea how it could have happened. I'm very gentle with my phone and have no memory of when such damage could have occurred. This is the first time I noticed it, and you really have to look at it at the right angle to even see it. The glass on top is flawless and the phone shows no other signs of damage.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point. Is Verizon going to notice it and tack the $500 or so onto my bill? Should I call them and explain what happened? I'm pretty sure there's a good chance it will just slip through the cracks when they receive my broken phone, but I guess my conscience is getting the best of me. Anyone have any thoughts on my situation or experienced similar in the past with Verizon?
I'm guessing you have asurion insurance? I believe you can so 2 replacements a year. That being said... You're first replacement came in broken and I wouldn't accept it.

I do not, which is why I was happy when they told me it was a warranty replacement. My heart kind of sunk when I saw the crack
An arch from electrical current? If that's the case maybe call and tell them. Just be sure you don't have water damage.

Definitely no water damage.
Not an arch from electrical current. The crack is in a arch shape. No idea what the cause was. I'm just afraid once I send it back, they are going to see it and claim abuse and charge me for the replacement. If there's a good chance that could happen, I may want to just send the warranty replacement phone back and replace the screen in my broken phone for $100.
If the crack is under the main screen then i would say it will be covered easily. I had a BB Storm where the screen was fine but the digitizer shattered. Vzw store replaced it without a problem.
Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me . AFAIK your phone has a 1 year manufacturer's (Samsung) warranty so Verizon probably won't care to replace it since the replacement cost won't be coming out of their pocket.
"its cracked?" "it wasnt went i sent it. They must have dropped it in shipping" ive been told works with customer service, its not worth their time arguing with you.
One thing with verizon I have noticed it's they really don't have too much of a conscience when it comes to us customers, so why have one with them. Warranty replace it and claim it must have happened during shipment if they notice. doubt they will argue. I know some people misuse the warranty replacement thing, but apparently you aren't. I forgot to replace the official software bacl on one of my storm replacements (there were 11 total and they were all legit) they didnt even notice. Odds are the screen will get replaced and sent off to another customer and they will be none the wiser
so, i recently received a replacement Evo from the repair center, and not even a full week later, my screen shatters from a 2ft fall . I left my evo on my lap, and rushed out of my car and completely forgot i had placed my evo on my lap. Well hearing my phone smack the road was a quick reminder of it. Lucky Damaged screens are covered under free replacement from the sprint repair center. Sprint use to never replace damaged phone with out having to pay the deductible. is this new, or have i just been dealing with the wrong people? attacheted is a picture of my evo. by the way, although the screen is shattered, it is 100% fully functional .
I just went threw the EXACT same thing on Friday pretty much. The FIRST time my EVO ever fell (about 2~3 feet) it shattered the screen.
I stuck my EVO in my hoodie pocket in my garage and the rubber case had hung up on the materiel so it didn't get all the way in my pocket. I let go thinking it was all the way in my pocket (was in a rush to get somewhere) and it hit the concrete floor face down.
The outside screen was 100% ok but the inner screen, the one that actually lights up was shattered.
I took it to my local sprint store which was only 3 blocks away and asked about a replacement expecting to pay the $100.00 dollar deductible. I was informed there was NO deductible and that Sprint had changed the policy a couple months ago with regards to replacing the broken screens. I asked why the change, because so many have broken? The store manager said yep, pretty much. Easier to just replacement them then deal with pissed off customers and potential law suits over something that breaks SO easy.
Anyway they were out of Novatech screens so they sent me over to a Corporate store. Took about two hours to get it fixed. They replaced the WHOLE front and even gave me the old one back because I had a Zagg protector on it. They told me to go to Zagg.com and claim a warranty on it which I did, should be here within a week!
same here, i walked in thinking they weren't going to cover it. I myself use to cause a stink when they wouldn't cover cracked screens. makes things a lot easier when sprint actually works with you. now my replacement is on its way, should be there tomorrow. i really am considering buying the otter box.
But in the long run, seems as though MOST people end up paying more into insurance than they actually get out of it
I absolutely agree, you end up paying $100 just to get a used phone. I just checked ##786# my phone was initially activated 7/1510

You even had a screen protector and it still cracked?
I've got to watch mine more carefully. I bought the Sprint screen protector for mine. Even after countless drops no cracks yet. But i can see a couple cracks on screen protector but not on screen itself.
Yay for insurance, even-though many would pay more into insurance than they get, at least there is a sense of protection.
Yup, that is one of the sprint sold protectors, it helps with scratches... Thats about it. Yes, if you love your evo, be careful haha

Same problem with my homeowners and car insurance.
One thing I realized about insurance....you only need it when you dont have it.
Just got back from the Sprint store. Told the lady my issue which was dust under the screen (my phone did have the screen separation issue) which I mentioned and she said was cosmetic and couldn't do anything about but we can clean the dust out for you. Left my phone went to do some thing came back 45minutes later and got my phone back. They told me they had to replace the screen so I was like oh cool no dust plus fixed screen separation issue!
But . . . . . .
Now there is bleeding from the backlight just above the Home/Menu/Back/Search buttons. The screen has a very noticeable white glow about half a inch or more up. The white is no longer white (like the text message menu) its a dirty white, except the lower portion where the bleeding is at.
Well theres my rant, any options, advice, or anything else please feel free to let me know!

LOL! Welcome to the club. Had dust under screen... took it to local store... they replaced screen with one that was all scratched and nicked on edges... I *****ed and had them put my old one back... they said I needed to call Sprint for replacement... I did... got them to send me a replacement... replacement arrived with camera and kickstand all scratched up... *****ed and had them send me new replacement... replacement arrived yesterday all scratched up on the sides... *****ed and had them send me new replacement... they said I have to go through store... I told them I don't have time to keep doing this... asked them to transfer me to retentions... lady was useless and told me there was nothing they could do... I hung up and will most likely switch to T-Mobile when the 4 other lines on my contract ends in April.
I'm just done with this non-sense. Sprint thinks that because it is the cheapest carrier, they can do these things as we'll most likely not switch... well, they just lost a $300+/mo customer here.

OHHH, that would have pissed me off... I wouldnt pay my bill and file a complaint with the Sec. of State against them. lol
As far as the OP goes, yeah I would take it in to them and tell them if they don't fix it the right way - you will file a comaplaint against the store and will not be paying any part of the bill untill its correctly taken care of
Well long story short its fixed. They replaced the screen yet again and everything is as crisp as it was before, no dust under screen. There doesn't appear to be any screen separation but if I push on the screen I can reveal more of that edge on the inside but the screen is not above the edge of the phone but almost flush with it.
I think it depends on the store maybe, this place has been a headache but also a blessing, doing wayyyy more than any other sprint store I have been to and I've been to A LOT lol.
The guy even asked me if it was "rooted" and I was like ummm I don't know? Maybe? He chuckles and says oh I was just wondering cause it had that rooted look. Then he said you know you can make it run at 1200 (which I'm assuming processor speed is what he meant) and I said ya I know but its already fast enough. I couldn't tell if they cared if it was rooted or if he was just curious.
Sprints tech support told my friend he should root his phone because the Roms people put out are easier to fix problems on then stock ones.

I just had a experience with sprint myself which was horrible and I am still going through it. I had my screen replaced and they left all the screws out of my phone. When I realize it, I went back to the store to tell them and they replaced the screws. I realized then my screen was full of dust. The manager was a complete ass and would not do anything. Then he said he could fix it. They had the phone for an hour and come to find out. All they did was blow th dust even further down into the screen. The dumb asses used a spray gun and put the air through the 3.5mm hole. The problem with that is that is where the dust is getting in.
I called retention and they want me to go to another store to get the run around again. I also got them to confirm the upcoming changes with the perks for yearly upgrades. It's a great day at sprint today. Anyway, I am now back in the same situation with screen full of dust and nobody willing to do anything to fix it. They want me to go to another store but I refuse to burn my gas to deal with another crappy store.

I said the same thing. I don't have time to keep trying out different stores. They refuse to do anything about it though. I'm running out of options. I want a new phone or a refurb in good condition. It's not much for someone who pays over $300 monthly to them.
Well I bit the bullet and got off my ass and went to another store. I got the screen replaced in less than 15 minutes. The guy pulled up the retention notes and fixed it immediatlely. It's sad I had to resort to literally a 45 minute conversation with retention to get this to happen. I have to find a way to block the opening on these phones. The 3.5 mm opening should have been on the side or dare I say the bottom. I know some people don't like that.
Looks like I’m not the only one with the same problem. My EVO was six months old and died to the point it wouldn’t even power up (no phone) insurance. So they ordered a replacement, this one has light leak everywhere, dinged up speaker phone and couple of dust specks, plus old battery. So I said I want another one. So week later I got another one. Holy ****, the second one was even worse then the first replacement. Light leak everywhere, bunch of dust in left lower corner, dinged up housing. I did not accepted that replacement. Called Sprint and they said they have no authority to tell the store to order me a new one and told me to talk to the store manager (like that will do anything) because they said it’s a cosmetic issue. What pisses me the most is that the warranty on refab. is only 30 DAYS. HTC/ Sprint doesn’t extend warranty to the end of the first unit. This is a total bull****. I lost 6 month of manufacturing warranty. Looks like HTC doesn’t stand for there product like Apple does. I never had those problems with exchanging Iphone’s. Warranty was always extended to the end of the original unit and you couldn’t tell that was a refab. or a brand new unit.
...a broken front glass. I've had my Evo since launch, naked, and finally dropped it on something hard enough to break it - the parking lot. Needless to say, the glass is cracked, so I'll need to bring it to Sprint (I have TEP), but first, a few questions:
1) I need to unroot (the phone is still very usable), but if I get an exchange, is the newest version of Android rootable for the Evo4G?
2) If it's NOT rootable, I know a guy who replaces glass on iPods, iPhones, and other smartphones, (including the 4G) and he'll charge me for the glass and that's it (<$50). Problem is, now it has a few nicks in the side, and that will bug the **** out of me.
Any ideas/tips from anyone that's gone through this with Sprint or suggestions otherwise?
Thanks
You'll get referred to Asurion unless the tech is feeling exceptionally nice that day.
They've been cracking down on courtesy repairs recently, mainly because the front assemblies are around $100 a pop.
If you get an exchange you will be able to root using Revolutionary (do a search). I've done several.
Go to amazon, the digitizer is anywhere between $11-$20... Not a real tough fix...
I'd go the amazon route as well. My friend fixed his wife's evo pretty quickly and for $15 I think.
Wow, thanks everyone! I do have TEP for the phone, but replacing it myself doesn't look to difficult and I'm pretty handy. I already have the torx and pry tools, so I may just go that route. Thanks for the feedback!
And even if you don't want to do it yourself, there is no need to actually take it to a sprint store. They will just tell you to call Asurion.

And even if you don't want to do it yourself, there is no need to actually take it to a sprint store. They will just tell you to call Asurion.

Not necessarily. I'm on my 4th screen replaced at no charge from my local store. I have TEP, the sheet shows $35 for screen repair without it. 3 times I walked in and was out in 30-40min. Once they had no screens and gave me a loaner while a new shipment came in.
Perhaps corporate stores are just referring to Asurion now, but all the stores in my area still repair in shop.
I just had to turn in a phone because the USB data lines were not working. They refused to do any diagnosing while it was rooted. You might be able to try a stock-looking ROM perhaps. But I unrooted following guides here, took it in, got the new phone a while later, rooted it, and I'm back.
Nine days later, I drop the phone on concrete face-down. So now I'm sitting with this new phone and a cracked screen. Ebay has a number of complete housings with LCD for $40-60. With that, swap in your motherboard and it should be all good. I will be going this route over the next few days.
Ifixit.com has a guide to take it apart. You have to do the first few steps to see what model LCD your phone uses. Some have a wide ribbon cable and some have a narrower one. I just looked this afternoon and mine is a wide type cable. Maybe older phones are narrow.
Go with number 2 because it should be easy to fix to do. And just deal with the side nicks and scratches. After all it was your own fault for not having it protected somehow.

Nowhere did I say it WASN'T my fault. It's not like I'm out to **** over Sprint. I think having the phone since launch and never dropping it naked is pretty ****ing good in its own right, thank you very much.
I had the Otterbox Commuter (which is an amazing case, imo) from day one (Dec 2010), but have since gone naked. The phone is too sexy to cover it up with anything. I gladly take the risk of dropping it.
Bottom 20% of my digitizer went bad. Sprint said they'd fix it for $35 till they found out it was rooted. They said if I brought it back with stock software they'd still do it. I brought it back with a stock ROM but they claimed water damage and wouldn't fix it. Dirty ****ers.
For $20 and an hours worth of time I fixed it myself with a part from Amazon. You'll need to pick up a safe pry tool kit ($2). I ordered one setup for an iPod and it worked fine. They also say you'll need a T4 driver but you'll need a T5. Lowes has a Torx multitool that works great for $10.
There is a youtube video that shows step by step how to replace the EVO digitizer.

I guess it depends on the store.. I don't have insurance and they also charged 35$ but they never said anything about root. I was running cm7 and didn't even change they boot animation to stock..
There also was no root method at the time..

the day after i got my evo i had to go to the sprint store to do something with it (i forgot) but the tech came out and tried to pull the "water damage" BS they always pull. I told the prick that i just got it YESTERDAY and why the hell you people always try to pull the water damage bs? he had nothing to say. I was being a bit loud in front of everyone in the store and you should have seen teh look on his retarded face. these doosh bag techs at sprint suck!! they would rather find a way out of fixing it than actually fixing it.
