[Q] BLN on DL30 - Fascinate General

Is there a kernel out for it yet?

No, and there will not be, until Froyo is official.

Or unless someone leaks the kernel source to wikileaks!
This reminds me... I've been wondering about JT's boot animation kernel. Did he just patch the leaked DL30 kernel somehow? His ASOP froyo kernel still has some things not implemented, so I don't think it's based off of that. Ah, this little side note has become too long and is now off topic.
Anyway, isn't it a goal of BLN to get all of their implementation out of the kernel so that any kernel can be used? I think supercurio is trying to do that with the Voodoo sound driver too, so that it won't need to be added to the kernel.
I fully support this, especially if we start seeing more fascinate froyo (or higher) leaks.

There won't be a working bln kernel until we have source to build from. Boot animation support is one of the few things that can be changed about the kernel we have.

I see. Thanks!

[Q] rndis support

Currently I am using a 2.2.1 rom and which the kernel does not support rndis for wired tether. I looked around and found a thread that has patch to enable it for the DI28 system. It is a zimage file 4.3 mb, there is also a zimage in the rom of 5.5 mb (located in /kernel/update/) Would it be possible to replace the 5.5 with the 4.3? Or would there be a problem because the smaller file was from a DI28 vs a DK28

I am going to make the assumption that you mean DI18 instead of DI28, which is a 2.1 Eclair kernel, unlike the DK28 which is a 2.2 Froyo kernel. If your currently running a Froyo rom, then you cant use an Eclair kernel. You more than likely going to have to wait til the source code is released for Froyo before it will be available, or you can Odin back to DI18 and use a custom kernel.

Lol yeah I meant the DI18.
I just looked up zimage and found out that it is the kernel...damn it...time to figure out how to modify it

I think the only modifiable part of the z image is the init, could be wrong...please prove me wrong so we can have over clock

Ive been staring at my computer screen and getting more and more confused...I can not find a program or a way to decompress the file. But apparently it is compressed by a zip program. And on the phone it decompresses it once you flash the rom. Other then that I have decided to call it a night on trying to find a way, (I am sure there is a way.) It is giving me a major headache lol.
The main problem so far is that the source has not been released. However I think it has in a way because it is on the rom, which means there is a way to get it off and mess with it. Just hasnt been discovered yet.
Its packaged by cpio I believe... Ill find something on it tomorrow for you...theres a dev thread that talks about it somewhere...but its probably not for the weak of heart or someone without a bit of kernel knowledge. Not sure how vast your skill set is.

I haven't tried any of the Froyo leaks so I can't comment on whether the Froyo kernel has RNDIS support out-of-the-box or not. Once the Epic Froyo kernel sources are released I'll patch in proper RNDIS support if necessary.
Meanwhile, if it's the case that RNDIS can't be enabled in the stock Froyo kernel, then I'm afraid that nothing can be done to fix that without the kernel source code.
I essentially want to get into the kernel to first start seeing what each file does then making smal tweaks to see the outcomes. So once I get some more knowledge I'll be able to compile my own.

The kernel isn't comprised of files but linked executable code (except the initramfs image, but that's not actually the part of the kernel, it's just included inside it).

A kernel can't be compiled without the source code, that's what we're all waiting for.

Ahh so really there is not a way to change it besides building a new one from source

[KERNEL] New kernel on Superclean .4 (EB01)

Is there another kernel that I can use for this ROM that is overclocked over 1Ghz? Perhaps there's a way I can modify the existing kernel and rebuild it for what I'd like to have?

Could be wrong, but without the source code this is impossible and since this is an unofficial developer release that will never see the light of day, I don't think Samsung will ever release the source.
You'll have to wait for the official OTA release of Froyo and then Samsung's subsequent release of the source.
As I understand it, there are no custom kernels for EB01 currently because there is no source available for EB01. This will not change until the devs have source available to them.
Thanks guys!

If you are referring to 2.4 on Eb01...no, they've not released the source code. What we have is all we got.

JT' BootAnimation Kernel?

Hi, I was browsing through the BlackHole section and jt's boot animation kernel was listed. Just curious it's NOT a voodoo kernel right? And it works well worth eb01? Thanks

blackhole section of rom manager?
I could be wrong, buy I'm pretty sure that kernel only works with Eclair roms. Since we have no source code for the Froyo kernel, there are no custom versions, other than the one that gives you the Voodoo lag fix. Any kernels that advertise any other modifications will not be Froyo kernels, at least not right now.

The boot animation kernel in ROM Manager is for eb01. JT was able to hack on some additions to the stock kernel without source. There's also a voodoo lagfix kernel that he put up, it's in development. It doesn't have voodoo sound though.
Thanks guys, I'd wanted to make sure it'd work with eb01, rather be safe than sorry.

If you are trying to use an EB01 Froyo build then use 2.4. It has Boot animation enabled just not with sound. Use this link to get it. It supports animation but not sound on boot. But it does support shutdown animation and sound. I have aperature science shutdown with sound and droid peeing on an apple for startup animation.
I don't actually need the boot animations, I was just looking for a nonvoodoo kernel to use with blackhole 4.2. Idk if that makes sense but right now blackhole will not work and I think it has to do with my stock kernel. Thanks for the suggestion though, if I can't get blackhole to work I'm definitely gonna use SC 2.4.

voodoo sound
i keep hearing about this voodoo kernel for eb01 with no sound..start up sound or what are they talking about...when i enabled the voodoo kernel in red clockwork, the robot voice talked her way thru the installtion...i have all my sounds.??
someone just clarify what they are talking about
also..why do i have the "android" animation on top of my eb01 boot animation?
Thanks guys

[Q] Help me understand Kernels...

Please excuse my noobieness, but could someone explain to me what exactly kernels are pertaining to roms? The reason why I ask is because I have the Fascinate with EB01 with Voodoo. I want to use Superio's voodoo sound tweaks, and I know that it isn't currently possible without the Froyonate's source code. Is it possible to use the Galaxy S's voodoo froyo kernel for the Fascinate? If so, what can I do to make it happen? Thanks in advance...

For general information about what the linux kernel is/does do some google searches. The kernels across different galaxy S devices are NOT interchangeable. We currently do not have source for froyo on the fascinate. Due to the nature of how the modifications work, voodoo lagfix was added to the kernel without needing to recompile form source, however voodoo sound fixes must be applied to source, rather than an already compiled kernel. Samsung will not release the source until at the very least, an official froyo is released. I suspect you might get some angry replies for posting this question. This is essentially because unless you're a competent linux hacker, the only thing you can do is wait patiently, even once the source is released.
This belongs in general. You should really use the search function.

Ok, I think that thr kernel is the core of the android operating system, where the drivers for the different hardware of your phone resides and the rom is the actual operating system, the kernel must be compatible to your phone otherwise it will not work. Many roms that you see posted here include kernels, the ones that dont you have to be carefull because if you have for example a non vodoo kernel and install a vodoo rom you will have serious problems, im no expert but maybe somebody more knowledgeable can correct me

Voodoo is part of the kernel, not the rom. If you see a rom that is advertised as a Voodoo rom, it's because it comes with a Voodoo kernel. Installing a Voodoo rom and/or kernel won't cause any harm, but if you have the Voodoo lag fix installed and flash a non-Voodoo kernel, or a rom that contains a non-Voodoo kernel, you will get to learn how to use Odin very quickly. It's always a good idea to learn whether or not the rom you are flashing contains a kernel or not, just so that you don't get surprised by something after the fact.

Trying to flash voodoo to phone....

I'm trying to flash the latest voodoo kernel to my boys fascinate. But it doesn't seem to work like it did when I did it to my mesmerize. Is there a thread that gives you the step by step process? He really wants to use the BLN notification app but we need to do this first. So any help will be greatly appreciated.
voodoo and BLN are two different things. If he is on froyo, we cannot add BLN to it due to lack of source. Once we get source, we will add BLN but until that time all we have in 2.2 kernels is voodoo lagfix, because that can be injected into kernels.
