I was looking on the site and out of the 4g and droid phones this says it comes with 2.2. I guess a good way to get people on board with that phone.
Yep. HTC has 2.2 on both of their EVO phones. And Sprint keeps putting all of their advertising money behind them. And we can't seem to get an update. This isn't really new.
nah, most people don't know what 2.2 or 2.1 is etc. They just want a phone. I had the shift and took it back for my epic.

I'm interested to know what you didn't like about the Shift.
Personally, the ONLY reason I picked the Epic over the EVO was the slide out keyboard. I had only held a touch screen device once before, and couldn't get the hang of the android keyboard, so I wanted the option of a physical keyboard- if nothing else just to try them both out and see which one I took to better.
I find that I use either one depending on situations. So if I have the choice in the future on different devices I think I'll always grab the one with the physical keyboard. But this whole 2.2 issue is really giving Samsung a bad taste with me.

The shift was a good phone, it felt more solid than the Epic. I like the keyboard better except for no number row on the keyboard. I wanted a bigger screen and a keyboard. Not to mention the screen of the epic was a lot better.
Plus the shift feels like it has more lag before doing what you tell it to do. It reminded me of the lag that the stock hero has, but not as bad.

I dunno. It was definitely heavier than even the Moment was and that was a brick. The slide-out keyboard felt like it could get stuck in any position and broken off if you put it in a bag or pocket wrong. It's not spring loaded like the Epic and Moment, it uses friction.
I like the feel of the Epic the best so far.
The shift is a great phone if you're coming from a moment or intercept. doesn't feel like an upgrade from the Epic or the EVO for that matter. My wife has the EVO shift and she loves it and its a good phone but it just comes off as a phone not on the level of the other elite sprint phones

I've spent a bit of time with it and the Shift seems like an excellent little phone. The Epic is better hardware-wise but for the price point the shift is pretty hard to beat right now. HTC is just better with software updates than Samsung..but Samsung's hardware is better.

yes, very heavy phone. I liked how the keyboard slid out better than my Epic, felt more solid and probably will last longer than the spring. the Shift is pretty fast too. Faster than the EVO . I was getting 1300-1500 Quadrant out of the box. I really don't like Sense either. But I usually use ADW or LP so that doesn't really matter

The screen is the deal breaker for me on the Shift. Going from the Evo to the Epic I was a little annoyed by the smaller screen and looking at the Shifts screen I just said forget it. I use Qik as well and of course the lack of the front facing camera makes that difficult. Again I want to make sure that it's clear that I think the Shift is a very good phone. It's just not on the level of the Evo or Epic
This was made as a "cheaper" version of the Evo with 700 MHZ instead of 1k etc., so yeah, this phone is ok, but the Epic blew it away specs-wise. I looked at both, didn't see a point in getting 2.2 if it came on a crappier phone in my opinion....I thought this phone blew away the shift.

The 700 mhz on the Shift is faster than the EVO due to it being 2nd generation procerssor.
You do know the procesor is a scorpion based snapdragon and clock speed is not the end all. The Shift is a ver nice phone. I own it as well as the Epic. No, there is no lag. It's pretty peppy. The keyboard mech is similar to the Droid's. It's solid and probabl a bit more reliable than the Epic's. If you're used to treos and bb's you won't have an issue with the lack of a dedicated # row. It's the rest of the fn symbols that are an issue. Thre is just zero standard for placement. The synbol key on the spacebar is dumb. The fn key below the shift key is dumb. Do we need a redunant menu button? No.
Other than that, the keys and spacing are really nice and samsung could take note. The linear key spacing, smooth keys and redundant capcative buttons are thbe keyboard reall kill the keyboard on the epic. I type well on it, but I could've been so much better. It's like they tried to screw it up.
The screen is just ok, and if you want a 3.6" screen, it's fine. It's the same thickness and weight (relative) as the epic. The build feels more solid, but that's the difference between metal and plastic. At least for it being a chunk, they tapered the back nicely so it fits well in the hand. HTC's software is definitely the most polished so for the android idiots it is a better out of the box experience. If you customize it doesn't matter. I do like the toggles in the drop down menu a ton. You need switchpro on a homescreen with the shift. You lose the nice 4g toggle widget if you don't use the stock launcher and have to turn to the market. Switchpro has no 4g toggle yet for it even though it has one for the evo. Lame. Still no push on HTC's stock mail so you're still looking to maildroid or k9. Don't get the dissing of imap idle for stock mail.
Battery life was fine. Not "noticably" better than the Epic. Think it's the evo battery so it should be better with the smaller screen and lower clock speed on the processor.
All in all, if the evo and epic are too big, it's a great phone. Not everyone wants to carry a phone the size of the evo and epic. Outside of the front camera and hdmi out, it can hang with the big boys no problem. I you think differently you're probably biased and only played with it for minutes.

The shift is the sprint desire z
The 800 mhz UNDERCLOCKED processor is the second gen snapdragon and is actually better stock than the EVOs 1ghz. Its also able to be overclocked to a stable 1.8 ghz...the hummingbird is better hz for hz but the shift is no slouch...

Checked out a shift the other day, and (this is purely personal taste, like whether you like escargot or not), I really didn't like the keyboard compared to the Epic.
The Epic has a spring-loaded, easily sliding kbd. I can pop it open and closed with my thumb.
The swift has, instead, a friction mechanism that feels like an oil-damped hinge, and requires both hands to open fully. No spring action. I really hated it.
The design used by Sammy has it's issues (gets loose, wobbles a little), but that is in part a result of the low-friction slider design.
I'd rather put up with those inevitable functional tradeoffs and have the pop-open/closed slider than the more solid-feeling mechanism of the swift that requires much more effort (and inconvenience) to open.

Did anyone else get a chance to play around with the captivate since it's release yesterday? I thought it felt a bit long in my hands (guess I'm too used to candy bar phones) and the touchwiz 3.0 UI seems a bit slow compared to my rooted Aria The speed seemed okay for a 1000 mHz hummingbird but the AMOLED screen looked nice and bright (which phone doesn't, nowadays?) I didn't like how it vibrates whenever you type something compared to when the Aria vibrates while typing....it felt weird, haha.
Your thoughts on AT&T's newest addition to it's Android deck?
Maybe I'm just so in love with my Aria that nothing can replace it
Oh yeah, the power/lock button is on the right side which I think is whacksauce
i have been like camping in the att store going in between the two
technically, the captivate is better
but the aria is so frakin fast that i dont think you will notice that its 400mhz slower for another year at least
i think the aria keyboard is a bit smaller, but still not too hard to type on.
really it comes down to the dev's and future android os releases
no i just have to decide which to get....

No, I dropped mine from about 4 feet up, and aside from the back cover and battery coming apart the phone itself was rock solid. Didn't even scratch the screen.

ok thats good to know
any pressing arguments in favor of the aria? cuz i think im leaning toward the captivate
It's very snappy and quick, it's pocket-sized, it has an optical trackpad, it currently has more ROMs available and even a Froyo ROM in beta just waiting to be ported =]
You really gotta play with it to choose.
I checked them both out, it's a tough call.
The aria is actually a little snappier than the Captivate, but the Captivate's speed advantage will probably show with apps.
The Aria seems a little better in build quality, (but not much).
If you want a multimedia device (primarily) and don't mind the modern trend towards talking into large devices, get the Captivate.
If you like smaller phones (and/or want to save some money) get the Aria.
the advantage over the captivate is the future 3D gaming potential of it.
as far as overall speed of apps and such the aria is just as fast as the captivate, because the aria doesn't need a 1ghz cortex a8.
you'll want to keep in mind that the captivate has 16gb of internal storage(2gb of which you can install apps to currently with the 2.1 stock rom.) and you can add 32gb of sd storage. they are both capable of wireless N, although the aria doesnt support 5ghz. the captivate supports 720p recording and bluetooth 3.0
the aria has a trackpad and the arias smaller yet its not that much of a difference. you can still play games on the aria. the power buttons on the top of the phone. lol
other then that it just comes down to if you personally want a bigger screen/bigger phone, or if you are okay with the screen size of the aria. the aria is a great phone and perfect for the size of it, yet so is the captivate. its all your personal preference.
as far as rom development goes currently the aria has an advantage over the captivate due to it being easier to port roms and we're working on building some but it may change.
also the last thing you'll want to remember is price.
My wife dropped hers from her lap exiting the vehicle and it came out with flying colors. Sturdy little machine.
the captivate has amazing gpu preformance
but the aria is pretty good too, it has the same gpu as the big shiny evo right?
im just trying to decide which way to go with the screen size

I prefer the more "rugged" matte backing of the aria versus the shiny smooth backplate of the captivate, but it does have a bit of a grip area so it's not to too smooth.
I'd say just hold out if you're having trouble deciding.. until AT&T releases an Android that you shouldn't have to compare with a mid-level Aria, but that's just my .02. I was constantly going back and forth between the two myself, but after toying with the captivate I've made my decision....the Aria is way cuter
Either way, we'll both have 2.2
/thumbsup
well at most only only "holding out" for a couple more weeks and i dont think they have anymore androids coming out in that time
they are both great phones, but idk if i can manuver the captivate with one hand, and typing on the aria mildly annoys me sometimes

yup
but in the case of the captivate its also a really big screen, so the whole phone overall is pretty big
I am up for an upgrade in a week and have been weighing my options for a while and am currently leaning towards the Epic, but was hoping to get some insight from the Epic community and hopefully some people that have used both phones. My main concern with the Epic is that of Sammy and their history of not supporting hardware. I still have a bad taste in my mouth over the Instinct(great hardware, terrible software and support). I don't care that much about the home screen part of either or the mail app as I will be using GMail and LauncherPro. One question I have is how many serious and talented linux devs are there that work on the Epic? I know most of the Hero devs went to the Evo. I currently have a Hero running CM6. I like some parts of Sense, but it's performance was a major turn-off and was what made me turn to ASOP. As far as the keyboard goes, I am undecided on whether I will actually like/use it or not. The only thing I see myself using it for is gaming emulators. Another concern is I have heard something about GPS issues, have they been fixed or acknowledged? I am open to input and am truly on the border here. Also, has a root been found for the epic yet? This is a big one for me so that I can at least remove the sprint crapware.
I would say go for the evo. Not long ago I was in the same boat a you. I did a ton off research, and played with both phones extensively. I chose the evo, and it its the most amazing phone I've ever seen. Now that htc uncapped the fps, there is really no problems. The epic is great, but imo the evo is better.
Sent from my Htc Evo
I own both. I prefer the Epic for the keyboard. However, I dislike its screen for late night bed surfing lol. All AMOLEDs are way too bright in the dark.
Couple other noticeable things for me:
Screen: Epic for brightness/colors, however EVO has better responsiveness (assuming hardware/software issue for Epic)
Screen FPS: Epic, but they just released official fix for EVO
Text input: Epic since it has hardware keyboard in addition to touch
Battery life: EVO hands down, my Epic seems to die too fast and I never used any type of battery saving application on EVO
Power button location: Blows on Epic, why did they put it on the side??
Phone Size: Epic is lighter and smaller
ROM Development: EVO because its a HTC device, but I hope this changes soon
And I'd go with the Epic. I got my girlfriend her first smartphone 3 months ago and got her the Evo. Played with it for a few weeks and definitely liked the phone. Then I came up for an upgrade and I had the same decision to make. I ended up chosing the Epic as it seems it is a fewer months older and has a few slight upgrades over the Evo, but not much.
The Epic screen is ridiculously amazing. They do NOT compare. I love having a hard keyboard, and I text a lot more because of it. It's been two phones and about 3 years since I had a keyboard, but I picked it right up and my fingers flew.
Touchwiz is very nice, but I got rid of it after a few days, well actually the 3rd day once I rooted. I did the same with Sense on my Hero, like it, but I rather go completely customizable with a custom launcher.
Another great thing about the Epic is the notificatoin settings bar. You can adjust a few settings like wifi, 4g, bluetooth, brightness and airplane mode all from the pull down bar. And it even works without Touchwiz, which was a surprise to me. This feature alone gives me a big vote for epic over evo.
It seems the Epic's cpu runs a little faster/more efficientyly than the Evo's. The battery life on both is about what you can expect, if you use it a lot, plan on charging it during the day. Are you into rooting and getting the most out of your phone? Then you can get extensively better battery duration.
Right now, there isn't a lot of extra stuff you can do on a rooted Epic, but the phone's only been out a few weeks and the Evo has a jumpstart on developmental stuff. Also, the Evo is already on 2.2 where the Epic is still on 2.1, although rumors have it getting 2.2 in the next month.
Gps issue is definitely a problem on the Epic. I use my GPS about 5 times a day as I travel to different sites for my job. There is a delay in getting a good lock, but there should be a fix for this soon, and it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I usually get a lock within a minute. But I'll be happy when I get that instantaneous lock again.
One thing the Evo definitely has on the Epic is a bit bigger screen, .3", and HDMI out. That function is disabled on the Epic for some reason. I've heard a few reasons, but who knows. I use the DLNA option instead as my TV is new enough to support it.
I came from 3 generations of HTC phones before this, so it was hard for me to leave HTC. In the end, either way you're getting an awesome phone. so good luck with this decision!
epic camera owns the evo. period
I own both and would say EVO hands down. I thought the physical keyboard would be for me as that was the hardest to get used to on my EVO but after using both extensively I'd get the EVO. Where a few people like being able to adjust wifi/bluetooth and whatnot from the upper status pulldown, on the EVO it's a widget called "Power Control". To me this gives the same ease. Having both the EVO and the EPIC side by side I wouldn't say the EPIC screen blows away the EVO. Colors seem more blue on the EPIC and amoled is nice but I'd take my EVO any day for the .3 larger screen + it doesn't look bad at all.
Now if you're HEAVY into games and that's the main purpose for your phone then I'd recommend you get the EPIC. GPS isn't as big of an issue as people make it out to be BUT that being said there's been a few times when I needed it *now* and was waiting for about 3-5 minutes which I am sorry is NOT cool. The EVO locks on almost instantly, and most places I have tried indoor as well (obviously in a concrete office building it's not going to work... but at home in my bedroom it works fine).
I would suggest that you go to a Sprint store and really play with both for ~20 minutes each...

Yes it is.
Having owned, and done extensive reviews and research on both I can conclude that the Epic's camera is much better than the Evos. The saturation, contrast, and white balance are all superior. Not to mention the video camera is only bested by the iPhone4.
I owned the Evo b4 the Epic. I liked the Evo, because the development for the device is amazing. The kickstand on the Evo is also great and comes in handy. Now that the 30fps caps is removed, it is even a greater phone.
I chose the Epic for a smaller form factor in phone size. I had to use two hands to use the Evo and my fingers would not reach across the screen without touching my skin. The Evo camera is not as good as the Epic, 23 fps vs 29/30fps at a constant rate. I like have an option of a physical keyboard to use only *if* I am typing a long email, playing a emulator or just getting tired of using the on screen keyboard. The AMOLED screen pwns the LCD screen and the Epics GPU is amazing, I run everything smoothly on my Epic.
In my opinion they are both great phones, but if you prefer a bigger form factor and a great development scene go for the Evo. If you prefer a great overall device that has everything built in for a phone then choose the Epic.

The EVO can't shoot HD video in low light situations. It goes at around 10-15 FPS. It's blurrier during the day. It over saturates the colors. The 8MP on the camera is totally pointless because the quality of the camera doesn't measure up.
My Epic takes much better pictures than my EVO. But regardless... there are far MORE IMPORTANT reasons to get a phone.

Apparently you haven't used cm6 on the EVO. IT does wonders for the camera and does things that no other camera app does as of yet; touch to focus while in camcorder mode....I get 24ish fps in 720p in low light with cm6.
Look, I own both, they both have their pros/cons but NEVER ever would I say one owns the other. It almost like Mac vs. PC they both do some things well....and others not so well.
Epic, is my vote, root is already out. Out of the box, epic is so much better. I still have my evo, but I never pick it up.

My pick is the Evo. I got the Epic at launch, but it never felt right for me. I was also annoyed at the current bugs, which I can confirm it has. I just didn't have faith in Samsung to come out with a fix for them all, especially in my 30 window.
I returned it for the Evo and was amazed how much more I liked the Evo. Just feels like the better phone imo. Battery life is much better on the Evo than the Epic for me too.
Good luck.

Agreed! They are both good machines(?), err phones. As I said in an earlier post, it'd be stupid to not go to Sprint and really play with both for like 10-20 minutes each. Download quadrant, neocore, your favorite app(s), etc., etc. and run it all on both and make an informed decision. Most Sprint employees (around were I live) recommend the EVO, that said, don't let a sales person sway you one way or another.

I plan on it. I have been to best buy twice, but for some reason in their great wisdom they only have mockups so you cant play around with them. I am going to buy it at best buy so I get my reward points and better returns.
I have both, bought Evo, really liked it, but when the Epic came out, tried it, loved it, gave Evo to hubby.
Handsize and feel is important to me, the Epic fits hand better, buttons are in more convenient place for one hand usage, Love Swype, love screen, rooted but staying with Touchwiz because its so smooth (and waiting for 2.2
before I mess with other roms). The pics are awesome, as are some of the apps, especially Google Sky. It actually runs a little faster than Evo in opening apps.
Now hubby loves Evo, bigger feel in hands, screen, but to me, colors look more washed out. However, he is color blind so can tell no difference.
I came from rooted Hero, so like Touchwiz better than Sense. Its a comfort zone, they are both great, play with them, if we didn't have two to chose from, everyone would like the one choice they have.
P.S. My only wish would be no keyboard on Epic and thinner, never use it with large on screen keyboards and Swype.
Cons and pros

The community support is not bad...we actually have quite a bit..its just the device has not been out as long and a lot of people are not used to HTC, most of the development now is being done by people who did development on other Samsung devices such as the Moment. The developers who came from HTC are doing things but not as quickly as they are not used to it.
That said, I usually used custom roms before but for my Epic I'm pretty happy with Stock and Root for backup and Tethering.
What do you mean by cm and snap? if cm is Cyanogen then its coming...

pretty sure theres a kernal thatssets it to overclock when needed. better batter life with that kernal too. ive only tried one so far so cant say bout the other one(s)
i like my epic a lot, i havent gotten a chance to experience the EVO in full yet, but i know from having the mts that htc makes some of the best quality phones. Samsung did ok on this one, as far as physical build and keyboard ill give it a 7/10. 4 inch S-AMOLED screen is crazy.. but i cant wait til sprint/htc does a similar to the epic, because that will be truly epic
I was deciding between Evo and Epic too before finally getting an Epic. To me software is something that can be improved upon but hardware is what it is and cannot be changed. Samsung's support is not on par with HTC but they've pushed 2 updates out already in the last month, so maybe there's hope. And with simple tweaks I've got GPS working nicely as well as fairly good battery life (airplan mode and disable drm). So far I've been happy with the phone and I think it'll be amazing once Froyo is out.
I'm staying with evo.. epics got problems

I took my evo back to the store a few weeks ago and traded for an epic. I was not impressed with the hardware of the evo. I would much rather have the cpu and gpu of the epic for future games etc..
Run the ocean waves live wallpaper on the evo and see for yourself, it starts chugging and epic runs it flawless...

Evo has problems too..it boils down to which problems you prefer Evo problems or Epic problems (no pun intended lol)
For me personally I have no problems yet on my Epic :/

What problems does the EVO have these days?
From my understanding, the light leakage has been address, 30 fps caps been lifted and wifi fixed. Is there anything else?

Video capture is still horrible, audio doesn't sync with video at times, taking pictures with low light has not improved. If the EVO fixed that i'd still be on it. Camera sucks on the EVO.
Well, if you're still wavering... the Epic's keyboard looks nice, but IMHO it was compromised into uselessness thanks to the flat keys with almost no space in between. The problem is that I can't use my thumbs to effortlessly type on it, because I keep hitting two or more keys. Had they compromised its appearance a bit by using keys that were 2/3 as wide and long (with the same center pitch), or significantly raised the keycap centers, it would be fine. Unfortunately, they didn't, so it's not. By the same token, holding it with my left hand and using my right index finger gets tiring quickly, and the phone wobbles due to the screen's weight if I try to type on the keyboard while the phone is laying on a table.
The keyboard design of the Epic just has me shaking my head wondering whether they even bothered to test its usability with real people before committing to the design, or whether they told their designers, "make it look pretty in pictures, and keep the profile low" and decided that actual usability didn't matter.
Sigh. I can't wait for 3D printers to become cheap enough to enable things like aftermarket retrofit parts for things like the Epic that come from the factory "not quite right" by design, but could probably be hacked into comfy usability if there were a cost-effective way to make custom plastic parts in small quantities. Then someone could just make a kit that let you disassemble the lower half of a stock Epic, then reassemble the circuit board in a new bottom enclosure that made the keyboard nicer to use, and maybe added a slide-latch to lock the slider closed for added solidity when it's stowed...
I owned an evo up till the epic came out. I switched because I worked on the processor inside the epic and wanted to own something that I helped to make.
I had a lot of reservations about switching. Chief among them was the support that Samsung would give the phone. I read the horror stories about the moment, but decided to jump in.
Well two updates in I'm gonna go ahead and say that the epic is already at a point where I am as happy with it as I was with my evo. It took 5 months to get my evo to a point where the battery life was acceptable and the phone was running smooth. As of yesterday, I've resolved my battery issues (clean install of the latest update and no restoration of original settings). All this while running 2.1. I'm giddy with excitement over what 2.2 could bring.
In my opinion, people that list touchwiz as a negative simply havent experienced it for themselves. I never liked HTC sense and always preferred ASOP. That said, once you replace the touchwiz launcher (which really is pretty crappy), you're left with things that touchwiz, in my opinion, does better than sense. For one, there are the shortcuts that allow you to toggle wifi, 4g, gps and bluetooth in the dropdown notification menu. This allows you to toggle these settings in any app without exiting to the home screen. Then theres the brightness slider on the notification bar that I use more times than I can count. When you get down to it, the only thing sense has going for it are the widgets. And the widgets can all be had, at a small cost, on the epic 4g via launcherpro plus and beautiful widgets.
The screen is amazing, the keyboard is more useful than I thought it would be. As is the hardware camera button. The only glaring defects are the GPS and the capacitive buttons. Now dont get me wrong, these two are pretty serious and potentially dealbreaking problems. But I have faith that the GPS can be fixed. And as far as the capacitive buttons go, I'm slowly getting used to them...
Thats my take, for what its worth. Good luck w/ your decision.
I searched through the forums quite a bit and even good but have yet to find anything specific. I'm not sure which phone to get since I can not find a rooted comparison.
Please read about my HTC Hero and my original thoughts here:
jpklink.blogspot.com
Main Points:
Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.
As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. And if you look at the news today in the Android world, signs point to Samsung focusing on supporting Windows 7 phones in 2011 while Android will slowly move to the back seat. http: //phandroid.com/2010/11/22/samsung-focusing-more-on-windows-7-in-2011-but-will-it-matter/

Yeah you can tell how tarded they are by them having the hottest phone on the planet and neglecting it.
MLHickey:
Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.
imwillzillla:
Those are some really good points! So if I root the Evo with a custom rom, the speeds will be comparable to a rooted epic? And how come HTC stuff comes out first/sooner? Just because the phone has been out longer?
Windows 7... ew. Those are definitely some good points. Do HTC updates and that matter much if I'm installing a custom ROM?
Thanks guys.
Note: I heard the Evo now comes stocked with something that prevents it from being rooted and still today they've yet to break it. Any truth to this?

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.
Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.
Just my 2 cents.

But what about Epic's ugly azz cool color temperature?! Whites look grey on it, screen has blue tint... sorry, photographer coming out in me, but Evo's colors are much more accurate.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..
The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

Lets be a smarta$$ about it.
Anyways.
No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.
1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...
Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

Lol!
I think more kids end up with an epic over an evo just because of the keyboard. Look son it has a keyboard so you can type fast! "OMG L33T AHH! SWEET!" lol..
I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol
uhm no, thats why there are sidekicks.. i doubt u will c a kid with an epic or evo..
So I finally made it to T-Mobile today and played with the new phone. Overall, I'm disappointed with the build quality. I was wanting to get this phone to replace my G2 but the build quality on the G2 feels a lot better. Of course I'm already use to the G2's keyboard layout and the tactile feedback is a lot better than the slide. Also, the physical menu buttons on the slide, which I prefer, could be made a lot better. The optical pad worked a lot better (more sensitive) than my G2, but so did the demo G2 . And the sliding on the slide seemed very poor.
I am in love with the camera and it's features though. And yes its dual core processor and ram. But that's it. I'm guess I'm waiting either for the next G phone with a physical keyboard or HTC's next super phone.
Until then, I'm thankful for the doubleshot rom! Loving the camera on that one.
Anyone feel the same?
I think in general us keyboard lovers are gonna have to start seeing the writing on the wall. Keyboard phones are on the way out. Their a huge rarity now and only getting more obscure. I like a keyboard but I'm not like many people on here where I HAVE to have a keyboard. Pretty soon only option is gonna be a blackberry LMFAO LOL HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry just the thought of even touching one of those outdated pieces of junk makes me laugh.

hahaha. I might tell myself I don't need TO HAVE but I think I do. lol. It stopped me from picking up the sensation. Either that, or the funding. haha. But I still have my blackberry 9780 with me! haha. I carry it around for my phone numbers... but lately I haven't been carrying it around. Thanks to the cloud. lol. And the keys on there are too small now. Although it is fast and easy to text... that's about all it's good for. Well, maybe a mp3 player too. haha
I'm just not super hot on the looks of the MT4GS. I just think the MyTouch line has always been too flashy, chromy and has the "genious button". Not to mention that I'm not a big fan of the skin.
If you really need a keyboard I would hope that a "G3" would be coming out eventually by the time that the G2 has lost all relevance. They've done the G1 and G2, why not continue? I havent heard anything about this though. I'm just expecting it considering the G2 is coming up on 1yr old in October. The MT4GS is kind of a next progression in keyboard phones after the G2, but I'd really expect them to have another "G" device, as they have kept the MyTouch and G lines separate.

I used the keyboard a ton when I first got the phone, but I've started to use it less and less unless I need to nail out a big e-mail or forum post. I like to have it but have a hard time justifying the weight and thickness to have something I won't always use. I don't think I'll be in need of a keyboard on my next device.
I always think that there will be keyboard phones though. There's always going to be a market for it, but I dont expect each manufacturer to have more than 1 keyboard phone out at a time.

Why would anybody drool over that piece of trash? Look at the layout of the keyboard -- useless.
I suppose the dual core processor, the tegra 2 equivalent gpu and Sammies build quality is of no matter to you.
Have you tried it out to know its useless? Or can you judge by a 3d rendering of the phone how the keyboard feels?
I would rather upgrade to a qwerty smartphone with sense ui. Best ui ever

(I bought the MT4GS on wednesday.. here are my thoughts)
1) build quality is solid. they used a lot more plastic than on the G2 (could be a pro or con depending on your viewpoint), yes, and it's nowhere near as sexy as the G2 (not many phones are, imo), but it's not going to fall into pieces.
2) with you there 100%... it's just a learning curve, though. pretty soon I'll forget the G2 keyboard. they are nearly identical anyway, only a few minor differences, including the tactile feedback.
3) my only gripe with the buttons is the genius button.. I don't need a specific button mapped to pull an application that does what the OS already does so well with a "search" button... it just seems like a waste and a silly marketing gimmick. otherwise, they work well enough. I keep placing, rather than pushing, my fingers on the buttons though and am confused when nothing happens.. then I realize I have to push, hehe.
4) the optical trackpad is much better, imo, than the G2's. I thought the G2's would be very responsive and accurate, but it just wasn't... and I kept it extremely clean so it didn't have anything to do with gunk buildup. the MT4GS trackpad is fluid, responsive and accurate even when dirty.. very nice.
5) I really liked the G2's z-hinge personally, so going back to more of a Dream style (not the same hinge obviously, but similar in effort needed to pop it out) kb is a little weird.. but it feels durable and has a nice "locked" feeling that you didn't get from the G2. those of you who lost sleep over the z-hinge would be very happy with the Slide's hinge mechanism.
6) this, ultimately, is the selling point for me. the rest of the stuff is whatever... the hardware specs are impressive. I haven't even been toting my digicam anymore, there's no need... the Slide takes seriously awesome photos and video. once we get s-off and get some good development going, I foresee great things for the MT4GS.
is it worth the upgrade? in my opinion, after buying the MT4GS, no... it's really not. is it nice to have a new toy with some cool features that I wished the G2 could have had? you know it.
