I really don't understand the fervor and I don't mean to be a jerk. Why is it such a big deal?
I have a friend who's even held out for the g2 over the vibrant.
Probably because T-Mobile is marketing the G2 more since it has the T-Mobile brand. Kind of like what Verizon does to "Droid" It's all marketing.
im not excited. sure it will be a great phone. but i honestly think it's ugly. i can appreciate the hw keyboard though.
Some people are excited because it comes with Android 2.2 and given Samsung's past, we could be waiting a while for 2.2.

You don't seem very optimistic at all. Samsung UK have confirmed Android 2.2 for UK but nothing for U.S., hoping for the same result in the U.S. or at least close to it.
It utilizes HSPA+ which is only really useful if it's deployed in your area.
The marketing angle (mentioned above) is certainly part of it. Also, it's the named-successor to the G1 - that's special for lots of folks. Thats the highlight for me, really. If the Galaxy S lineup hadn't gotten the XDA section and CM roadmap (legitimized the platform, in my eyes) I might be waiting for a G2 also. Now that I've got my Vibrant, though ... No way could I be happy with a smaller screen and lesser CPU/GPU. I love my Vibrant. Some folks really love the thought of a "official" Google phone though. To each their own. Anyway, if the Vibrant starts pissing me off 6 months from now, G2 means I have something else to try out instead.
I LOVE my Vibrant but I will most likely get a G2, mainly because of the keyboard, the success and continued support the G1 still gets from the XDA community.

Keyboard isn't even a necessity for me. 4" Screen + Virtual Keyboard (or Swype) works more than fine for me. I definitely do think T-Mobile will spend most of their money towards marketing the G2 and saying it runs at 4G speeds (HSPA+)
just because the cpu has a slower max speed doesnt necessarily mean the phone will run slower. plus the vibrant has touchwiz bogging it down a little. the g2 is vanilla android 2.2. I'm excited for it.

Eugene released a package to remove TouchWiz. Get your facts straight.
Also, once CM6 gets released.. everything will be good again.
If the g2 has a working GPS and compass I'd consider it a better phone than the vibrant on that alone. I could care less about the qwerty keyboard but g2 will be shipping with swype so that's good. Hspa+ is a major leap for tmo where the vibrant won't even be able to compare. G2 is basically the next gen dev phone for Android. That holds a lot of weight for many.

Physical keyboard, HSPA+, stock android 2.2 (I think I read that they added 4 more homescreens though). Also, given the fact that it's the G1's successor, it'll be great for the mod/hack community
It sucks I bought my vibrant over a month ago, I would've gladly returned it for a G2
I'm still not real sure if I want to give up my Vibrant for the G2. I really don't think the G2 will just blow the Vibrant out of the water or make it obsolete. It has a slower processor, smaller screen, smaller battery, and is thicker. What I didn't like about my G1 and Cliq was the thickness. When I got swipe on the G1, I stopped using the physical keyboard and I wouldn't be using it if the Vibrant had one either.
It does have a camera flash, 2.2, and HSPA+ and potentially more support/development, but nothing else about it is appealing. The trackpad is neat, but I feel like too much real estate is being wasted below the screen on the G2, making it longer than it should be. I've been getting along just fine without a trackball/pad for a few weeks now.
I wish there was just a little more known about the hardware and an exact release date. I don't think I could lie with my old Tmobile Dash for more than another week if I sent my Vibrant back.
it's all about that scorpion processor, its the first of its kind on a phone, and although it is clocked lower than the current superphones (g2 running at 800mhz instead of 1ghz). it is a 45nm processor rather than a 65nm like snapdragon and other 1ghz, meaning it'll consume less battery power and be more efficient most likely beating the current 1ghz in speed and performance.
especially since its running stock froyo..theres also the hspa+ speeds, and for some ppl the physical keyboard is a plus. This phone will most likely take the crown as the fastest android phone...but..I still think it looks ugly and too plain :/
I wouldnt get too excited till it actually comes out. Then we'll know for sure on everything. All this regret or this will be better is just whatevers till the g2 is actually out

Exactly!
The processor in the G2 is an 800MHz Scorpion processor, which benchmarks at around the same performance level as the 1GHz Hummingbird processor in the Vibrant and is a bit more efficient on battery power. It's a huge improvement over the Snapdragon processors, about 4 times the speed at comparable clockspeeds.

even if you had a G2 running Vanilla i'm guessing that it wouldn't be running "STOCK" you would mod it like the majority of us here on XDA. That is the fun of it. Removing **** that we don't want and adding stuff that we do. So for us it really doesn't matter at the end of the day that the G2 will be running Vanilla. SO WHAT. Our vibrant will have AOSP and CM6.1 soon enough Just sayin.
Well, the G2 will awesome, I only have a problem with it:
It's release will severly slow down development on the Vibrant. :/ I've only had my Vibrant 3 weeks so if development doesnt pick up soon ill trade it in for a G2.

Very nice indeed. However, I think overall, I'd still prefer the Atrix 4G: timelier updates (save for the cliq debacle, which seems to have been an isolated incident, all other headsets that got FroYo rather quickly considered), a more manageable screen size (4" screen is the sweet spot for me), and a higher resolution screen, despite the smaller size (higher pixel density FTW).
We still don't know how much RAM it'll have, as the Atrix 4G will have 1GB and the only other dual core phone out now has only 512MB, and how big a battery it'll have (The Atrix 4G packing a 1930mAH), and whether it'll have fingerprint reader for unlocking the phone (highly doubtful though).
Unless the Galaxy S II has another trick up its sleeve, it'll lose my business. Samsung's "whatever" attitude helps no one. While Motorola is infinitely less developer friendly, with the Tegra 2 at the core, I doubt anyone will be hurting for speed, and there's still a certain degree of customization that can take place in stock phones, so those who hate Motoblur can go with a different launcher to change things up, among other things.

I'm pretty sure they're both 2core, the s2 and hd7desire2, but as for s2 I've heard 1.2 gig and now hearing 1.0 gig. Nice to have a choice between two 4.3 Android handsets for Tmo.

Same here. I really liked the Inspire, think I'll like the Atrix more.
I'm also exchanging my Inspire for the Atrix. While I love the screen, I found the phone itself to be too large for my tastes.
It's likely that root on the Atrix, if it is achieved, will be far more difficult than the Inspire. The Inspire is just an AT&T version of the Desire HD which has been available for some time and is well understood. Being a "newb" and not understanding how to use a phone or do certain things is not a good reason to return one for another phone that will be as or even more complicated...
I already returned my inspire. I liked it but the battery issue was a deal breaker for me. I want a phone that at least will give me 8 hours of battery time, the inspire died in my pocket before lunch one day.
Same here. The battery issue and slow CPU.
The atrix is way better than inspire.

I am all in for the Atrix, but you would be hard pressed to find a phone other then the Atrix, right now that keeps up with the Inspire's CPU scores.. Not Dual-Core, but not slow.
Lol I know being a noob isn't a good reason. Yeah battery does suck though, sound sucks, led notification works half the time, and I'm getting some crappy yellowish tints on a lot of my pictures. In willing to take a $35 hit on restocking fee, plus extra $100 that atrix cost for the extra processor, ffc, and hdmi out.

It's not like we have to use processor intensive apps like "matlab" or something

I am getting atrix as well and I am on inspire right now. yes it is a slower cpu then the one in atrix, but does it feel slow? inspire feels like the fastest android phone I have ever used up to this point. I really dont think it is atrix will feel any faster just because it has faster hardware. May be it will handle things better in the future. For now it has been great.
Inspire's already old tech. Good choice on returning it.
You got to admit... The inspire is built well. Man, that thing is a nice slab of metal! I would say it's the best built phone I've ever used. I too will be returning for the atrix (shipped tomorrow to my local at&t store) just for the battery life alone as the inspire's battery is real bad... My concern is the built QLT of the atrix. All cheap feeling plastic? Weird, as MOTO usually makes a solid feeling device... hmmm
I got the Inspire last week. Best thing about Inspire is Sense IMHO. It has the best email, phone and calendar software of any devce I know. BUT I think the camera, screen, battery and sound are all inferior (I also have a CaPTIVATE that has a perfect custom ROM so everything works). I will also give the Atrix a go and then decide which to keep.

Well... yes, depending on what you're doing. The dual core processor os going to let you do things faster, and help keep the phone from slowing down when running cpu intensive apps like games and sstuff.
The ram will help keep thongs open; with 512 I.can have a browser and maybe aan app pr two, but open a game then switch to the browser, and the game resets because android tries to run it all in the background.
More RAM will allow more things to stay open in memory along with allowing a smoother overall experience.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
do you have to pay in order to return the phone? and/or is there a fee to exchanging it to an atrix?
I'm thinking about selling my Captivate for a Desire Z/G2
cause swype though its awesome is sometimes really annoying to use when I'm on chat or editing documents on the go.... i do lots of typing
convince me....
Pros and Cons of moving from captivate
Pros:
Physical Keyboard
same resolution (800x480)
Native Froyo without screwing with custom ROMs
GPS that works
Cons
3.7" screen
Not a Super-Amoled screen
less powerful SoC
Lol I think your own pros outweigh the cons already. My friend is using a captivate that he had me root it the other day and I gotta say that there's a huge difference in overall feel. When you tweak the g2/vision/dz (whatever you wanna call it) it feels buttery smooth. Even though it already was pretty smooth on stock.
Recently I switched to de-odexed stock which looks and feels like stock but gives me a little boost in speed. I have to say I am a big fan of the developer work that has gone into maximizing this phones potential without totally making it feel like something different than what htc intended. Other than software optimization, the physical feel is pretty solid. Its a bit heavy but the hardware inside makes it well worth it. Not trying to bash other devices but I feel the g2/vision/dz is not only a great device but in some aspects, it sets the bar for todays smartphone.

My G2 gets much better battery life than my sister-in-law's Vibrant. I average two days of moderately heavy use. She barely ekes out one.
Not sure how the Adreno 205 stacks up to the Hummingbird's GPU, but I never experience lag in Dungeon Defenders.
Build quality is better on the G2 as well.

well most every device has overclock development but the g2/dz has the highest overclock capability yeet.
It's stock 800mhz but it's a second generation processor which blows away all the first gen 1ghz before it. I have the 1.8ghz kernel currently so I am capable of that much but only use it when doing heavy work loads or testing stability. I also wrote a guide to flashing the 1.8ghz and 1.9ghz overclocking kernels for people who are new to adb in general. Some users have even been able to hit a solid 2.0ghz, most everything over 1.8ghz is much too unstable for regular use.
Hey,
Just wanted to chime in; my friend has the Vibrant and is constantly complaining about the lack of working gps. It's a function that all Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate owners bought but is lacking whether it be due to software or hardware. He is flashing a new "improved" rom every 2-3 days trying to find the perfect one that will give him good reception/gps.
With the DZ/Vision/G2, the only real con is the "loose" hinge. IMO, it's not that loose on mine but as with anything, you're mileage may vary. As it was stated before, the DZ/Vision/G2 has the second generation Snapdragon, which is clocked lower than the first generation 1GHz, but is much better in the power-to-performance ratio. I wouldn't be turned off by the 800MHz because once you have root and all that jazz, you can easily overclock to that 1GHz level at the minimum. I am sure once you get to that point, you will blow any Hummingbird equipped phone out of the water.
You really can't beat the physical keyboard either
Regards.

Desire HD has the same Adreno 205 GPU and basically a overclocked version of our CPU. The CPU difference doesnt matter though since you can overclock the Desire Z/G2 easily. At the same cpu frequencies they perform similarly. The Desire HD does have more RAM though.
The only advantages of a Captivate over the Desire Z/G2:
GPU: PowerVR SGX540 is a absolute beast, still the best GPU out there right now imo. Just look at the benchmarks of the Nexus S.
Screen: SAMOLED
I recently sold (or am selling, it's on ebay now) my Vibrant for a G2 and I am very please. Like you I do a lot of typing and there's simply no substitute for a physical keyboard. The G2 is just as snappy as my Vibrant was (rooted with Bionix), but I do notice a slight decrease in graphics quality in games, but probably only noticeable because I used the two phones back to back for a short time. I saw go for it.
G2. The mytouch4g is nice as well. I have both.

get the G2 man depending on what rom you have (if any) you can get excellent battery life. it took me hours to kill the battery with high brightness settings, music use, web use, and gps on. the physical keyboard is just great for typing a lot and for simple replies you can use swype. overall it's a reliable phone
I'm contemplating on the exact same thing, EXCEPT...
1) I can't justify paying 560-ish for the desire z,
2) G2 is $440, but I will be restricted to 2G since I'm stuck on ATT for various reasons.
I was trying to read around but I couldn't really find exact answers to my queries; maybe some of you might know.
Over 2G, will I still be able to send MMS on the G2? I noticed on my captivate, whenever I send pictures that are 1200 kb, the phone automatically downsizes them to about 88kb or so before sending. Will pictures even send at all on edge?
Without 3G, will it affect aGPS?
Other than that, I never even use my phone for browsing or streaming over 3G. Should I settle for a G2 or just suck it up and pay for a Desire Z?
I'd recommend saving up a little more and spending it on the desire z and/or waiting it out for a good deal. Paying over 20 dollars a month for edge simply isn't worth it.
Hey,
You should look at some of the used markets in your area. I know there are some DZ/G2's for sale around my area (Canada) for about $400CAD. These are naturally locked but you could always sim unlock it yourself for free.
Yes , all the hypes about the new dual core phones, the tabs made me thought for the past month Its time to move alone.
IT has been last jan i have the galaxy s, I went through some readouts about samsung tab 1st.
It seemed the only handy size of the tab is the single core 7 inch, which is same as galaxy s, same price when i got the galaxy as new. so its a no go. I checked out the cheaper new one of tab 6200 , no go, I chked the 10 inche tab...its too big lol
Galaxy S 2 ? its twice the price what its delivering, So no samsung for me for now.
Ericsson? I chked RAY, ARC NEO ETc, donno what! lol all no goes.
HTC? Never used one , and dont feel like.
So i decided to stick to galaxy S cause none of the new phones are worth compared to upgrades and prices and the new MIUI ICS is kinda rocking with ma phone.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks
I'm with you dude, can't see the point in getting a sgs2 for a little more speed, I want my next phone to offer something different for the price, may be the sgs3 or something else. Low ram is compelling me to upgrade to SGS 2 or HTC Sensation XE !
A good decision, dude.
I will also stay with my Galaxy S, got it one year ago and still luv this phone more than anything. Ok, sgs2 has a more powerful cpu and gpu, but I actually dont play to much with my phone, only some small games like doodle jump, angry birds or Fruit Ninja THD
It has such a powerful gpu, that even the galaxy nexus uses it, ok, its version is clocked at 384mhz or so, but doesnt matter, it is one of the most powerful gpu solutions in the single-core world (is also used at 300mhz on the lg optimus 3d)
But in my opinion its the fault of gameloft and all the other developers, that the gaming performance is so f*ckin bad on our sgs.
On the iPhone 4 and iPad e.g. Asphalt 6 runs as fluid as hell, also fast and furious does. And both devices have a higher resolution, but a weaker gpu (PowerVR SGX535)
If the developers would code for the plattform instead of porting the whole stuff down from iOS, then all the hd-versions from iPad would run fluid on sgs and other devices. So thats the main reason, why we need a much more powerful hardware with android, to gain the same gaming expirience like on iOS-Devices.
B2T: Keep the phone as long as you can. It is solid made, a really scratch-resisent screen, awesome and it has imo the best size, I think that 4,3inch is just to big for a phone
BTW:
Why do you think all the american carreers release almost every second month a new phone based on the galaxy s. Sometimes with a 4,5inch screen like the infuse or with a keyboard like the sprints epic 4g and some other phones I dont remeber atm
So, have fun, dude
I stay with my I9000 too, it's still the best mix of cpu, gpu and durability for me. Regarding RAM I use the great Thunderbolt Tweaks and Semaphore kernel, which results in a very fast and stable SGS.

@angry_machine, Your decision is absolutely correct. I was also thinking to upgrade to SGSII, but after seeing it in a mobile market i changed my mind. NOthing much different. I bought my SGS last year in Oct, and it's the best phone I ever had. And I'm having no issues with it. Technology will never stop, so we should not change to every next model. Only change it when you really need. I Will stick to it until a change is must.
Voted 5-star because I feel the same.
I'm on the same boat, with all these powerhouse phones coming out I was really thinking about just buying a new phone outwidth my contract. My contract ends in August and I just think to myself, what kind of phones will be on the market by then? Tbh it's worth the wait.
do you hear about samsung galaxy note?
