Will there be a one click root for this phone? Using Visionary and Terminal makes the phone lag which makes me not want to go through the process of installing Iced Glacier.
Which leads to my next question... Simply having Terminal and Visionary installed is enough to cause the phone to lag without as much as a temp root - why?

Thatsa not causing your phone to lag, bloatware might be, which you can get rid of after root.
And i've been wqorking on a one click root for a while now. Its not gonna happen. To many obsticles, and the current rooting process is quite simple.

Its not the bloatware. When I install those two on the phone it lags. When I take those programs off the phone, everything is fine.

There are some reports of the phone lagging after running VISIONary. But alot of people have not noticed it. After you have verified that s=off and rebooted the phone. Temp root one last time, then click perma-root and reboot. Your lag should be gone. My wife is running STOCK MySense Perma Rooted with a Engineering screen and has 0 (zero) lag.
But rooting process does not cause the phone to lag.
If you're that worried about visionary, use rage. Full directions can be found at
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=TMobile_myTouch_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
download link for rage:
http://android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/common/gfree_temp-root.zip
adb push su /sdcard/su
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
adb push root /data/local/tmp/root
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
from terminal emulator run
/data/local/tmp/rage
Then follow directions for gfree
download from here http://android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/common/gfree_04.zip
adb push gfree /data/local
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/gfree
from terminal emulator run
/data/local/gfree -f
sync
/data/local/tmp/root
sync
reboot, and you may have to run the rage package again to make root permanent. Not sure about this, its required with visionary, so it might be with rage as well. After reboot open term emulator and if you can get a su prompt, then your good, if not, run again.
I perm rooted with visionary and terminal on two different phones and have experienced no lag whatsoever. Just my 2¢.

Working one the one click, i've literally done it three time a day. No lag. Ever.
If you forget to check off the 2 items in visionary and try to redo it, it lags. Just pull the battery and start over. After root I took visionary off and have no lag.

OMG guys, listen: I install both of those programs. It lags. Period. I don't even have to start using them yet, simply installing them on my device cause the phone to lag. Whether or not you get lag is not the topic of this thread.
It was a yes or no question as to whether or not there was a one click root for this phone.

Also, gave you a root solution that doesn't need visionary. Solving your problem. No need to catch an attitude about it.

If by just installing the two programs causes your phone to crash. Then you installed two bad programs. either that or you have a [email protected]#$ ton of applications on your phone.
No need to get your panties in a bunch we are here trying to help. and remember you will get more with honey than with vinegar.
I understand that you two. But, when people keep replying with, "my phone doesn't lag comments" it gets kind of old.
I do not have a ton of apps on my phone and I keep the RAM cleared up as well.

well i did alot of searching today and i don't think you can unlock this as technically we don't have a g1 or hero phone. we are running an image from a sd card. i still wonder how i can get root access to run certain apps? has anybody else addressed this issue because i can't find an answer.

well i think what im looking for is to become a superuser to be able to run certain market apps such as screenshot and a cache cleaner. ive searched everywhere here and on ppcgeeks with no luck. i did see something about a script that can allow certain apps at launch to run in superuser mode, is there anything like that at all? sorry if i keep asking but it's bugging me to no end and im sorta stuck. how did you guys get apps to run in root mode? is there a command i need to enter int he terminal? i do know i tried su and it said permission denied for me?
by the way what is the superuser permissions app i see on my build of cupcake? i launch it and it does nothing?

Using adb will always give you root access, for windows you need to install the adb drivers from my site. Remember we are using a read only root filesystem so apps that modify the root fs won't work. su in the ion build will also give you root.
Hi Folks,
Is there any way with just a temp root to get adbd on the G2 to run as root?
I fiddled for a half hour or so with no success.
Thanks
Adb should work out of the box

I don't believe so.
As I understand it, adbd won't run as root in Production Builds, as the error you're seeing probably says.
Is adbd different that adb? Adb runs without root, you just need to enable development mode in the Application settings. You cannot SU in adb without root, but you can do non superuser tasks.
If adbd is different than adb, then I don't know what that is.

Yes it is. It's the daemon/service that runs on the phone that enables the adb "protocol."

Why?
maybe I should not be messing with things I don't fully understand.... but well that how we learn
I've had my Droid X 2.2 for about two months now and had it customized as far as I could unrooted. All the while, I was compiling a list of features that I'd like that required root.
But still, I didn't have the time to go through the process and possibly debug and/or retest all my apps. (I had jailbroken an iPT3 and an iPad earlier this year and remembered the time required to address fallout).
But then yesterday, while reading tweets, I saw z4root mentioned. I immediately got interested, came to this forum and did a little reading.
I said what the heck, root. So I installed z4root from the App Market and 15 minutes later I had root. (It wouldve been 3-5mins but the 1st attempt was blocked by Lookout. Once i killed Lookout, the 2nd attempt was nearly immediate).
I've installed the apps from my "requires root" list and tested all.
Now I know why they say "A rooted Droid X is a happy Droid X".
@ Camero-
Easiest way to verify root is to download a simple droid x root app and see if it works. No need, really, to use adb shell for simple tasks like this. You can program using Terminal Emulator. I just freeze or rename apps using titanium backup pro. Good luck.
Using z4mod will Droid X stay rooted after reboot/battery pull, or do you have to root it again? Also can this root be un done?

Do you have Clockwork Recovery Mod installed (icon showing in the apps folder) and if so when you reboot your phone does it just boot up or does it boot in Recovery mode?
On my short lived D2G every time I turned it on I it would show the moto boot logo then launch Boot Strap Recovery, if I rebooted same thing. I just don't wan to turn it on and then have to reboot just to get past the bootstrap recovery unless I choose to invoke it.
Just used that app on my buddies droid x and confirmed it worked.
Does anybody know if visionary or another one click root app is
being developed??? one that will perm root my mytouch 4g. ive been having so much trouble rooting it that i guess im just going to wait for the total one click root meathod. plus help ive looked everywhere and cant find any info on it. thanks in advance
I have no idea, but I used the video guide from unlockr.com and although it took a few more clicks than one (not many), I got it done without any major issues.
Most likely there will not be 1-click roots anymore. Protection is way too sophisticated on these newer devices. However, I rooted my replacement yesterday and it took me less then 5 min (ultimate s-off, sim-unlock, eng boot).
Good luck.

I used Visionary+ with root files and terminal emulator and it took less than 5 minutes for permaroot, s=off. It really is very easy.
I also started rooting way back on a G1 and remember the first time rooting took me almost a week of reading up and more than 2 hours to accomplish just the root!
Ok basically when I download the root.rar file I right click on it which creates another root file our whatever I drag it over to my sd and when I unplug from my lap top I open astro and there is the root folder or file or whatever it is so I open terminal emulator get su permission and type the first command + enter and it says something to the effect like sh file not found or in astro if I click the wpx or hboot it says they are not file. Can someone please tell me when im doing wrong with this root folder? Thanks in advance.....
You are running Visionary first and clicking temp root right??
I know that akaskriller.com has a one touch root. Dont know if its perm root or temp root. You can check out his videos on youtube and he has his own web site. Last time I checked, there was a 5 dollar donation to get access to the link on his site and it seems to work pretty well. You can email him and ask him questions and even call him. He's always willing to help. I think there's even a thread on here about him. Check it out.

Lol, yeah, dreaming.nbh, that separated the men from the noobs.
This phone is stupid easy to root, grankin put out an .sh file that does it all in terminal for you. Much easier than when I did it when root first dropped, though it still wasn't very hard then. Listen, this may sound like an insult to you though I really don't mean it as one, but if you can't get root following grankin's thread, root just isn't meant for you. Once you have root, its so easy to mess up your phone if your not paying attention to what you're doing. All you need is terminal and VISIONary.

Couldn't agree anymore.
Rooting is a process that enables you to completely FUBAR your phone. IF you cannot get the directions down to root the phone. Then you really need to second guess Rooting the phone.
As far as the root.sh file and the unroot.sh files they are stored in a .rar format. You need a special unzipper to extract those files. I bet your GF's Computer didn't have that.

I've rooted a couple G1s, and my Nexus One (ha!) but I think the problem with this one is that there are several posts detailing how to root, and they are a bit confusing (where do I start? What do I really need? Was it temp or permanent?). Maybe some cleaning up of ALL of those threads and leaving just the ONE that truly details it would be a lot better (and listing if "ultimate S=off" is truly required). So yes, it may be super easy for those of us that have done this a lot, but for a noob the thread count is entirely too high.
If you're having so much trouble rooting......DON'T ROOT. It isn't for you and you'll just end up bricking your phone then asking for help here.
Do you really need a permanent root?
Student Driver is right when he pleads for a single set of instructions - the multiple sets are confusing for those without the experience to sort out the abbreviations, other shorthand, and implicit steps.
But permanent root might not be necessary for everybody. If all you want to do is eliminate the effect of bloatware on speed and battery life, you can use Visionary (free) and Titanium Backup Pro ($5.99). Set Visionary to temp-root on every reboot, and create a list ("label") of applications you want "frozen" under "Batch" in the menu in Titanium Pro. Then the user can remove the bloatware after every re-boot by starting Titanium Pro and carrying out the batch operation of "freezing" the stored "label." [It would be nice if someone wrote an app that did all this automatically--that is, temp root + freeze unwanted apps--on reboot right after Visionary did its thing] It takes longer to get the phone back in service on a reboot when you do all this, but there's no worry about bricking the phone or about making it impossible to upgrade, because all of the apps are retained, although not in use, and these processes can be automatically undone on the next re-boot.
This may be a reasonable solution to the effects of bloatware on speed and battery life for those who don't re-boot frequently and are satisfied with the stock ROM.
all of the guides are very easy to follow. If my wife can root her phone, and she has no Android tech background I'm sure anyone can

Freezing apps after temp root with TB will persist through reboots. All work is done in /data partition which is set to rw by default. If all you want to do is remove bloat - then no, you don't need to permanently root.
PS. You might want to detach frozen apps from the market as well so they don't update and re-enable themselves.
I have a MyTouch 4G on the way.
I plan to just keep it stock, but I want to root and remove some bloatware and run some programs that require root.
What's the best/easiest way to permanent root if I'm not going to experiment with alternative ROMs?
I'd really like the least invasive way. I want something so that I can still get the next OTA without going through hoops getting the system back to a way to accept the OTA.
What about just using Visionary with it set up to temproot at each reboot? Any reason that wouldn't get me what I want? If I do that do I have to accept superuser permissions for all root programs after each reboot? I can see that being a PITA.
This belongs in the Q&A forums

Apologies, I'll ask someone to move.
/ understanding it has to be moved
The only way that you can remove the bloat ware is to root the phone and turn the s-off. If you just run VISIONary and leave s-on you aren't making any changes. you are just hiding or freezing the applications. If you do turn the security protocol off you can truly delete the apps you do not want. With that being said ./gfree is the simplest and most effective. You will need to have the adb up and running. I have a link to True_blue's EZ/ADB in my signature. Takes like 120 seconds to get it up and running....
I'm not really looking to delete the apps necessarily. If I free them, they disappear and don't start up/load in memory. That might be find for my needs.
Anyhow, I don't see anything in your sig. What's the link you refer to? Is there a page with formal instructions for using ./grfree?
