n00b flashed CM 6.1.RC2 - bugs/questions! - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there
ive been reading the last few days, and decided to flash a custom rom. i had wanted to do CM 7 nightlies. but i had trouble flashing clockwork recovery 3.x.x.x for some reason, i decided to go with CM 6.1.2 RC 2, so that i didnt have to flash it and could just install Clockwork Recovery 2.xxx via ROM manager.
Ok, so i did the nandroid backup. Wiped. Installed the CM 6.1.2. Then my phone wouldn't turn on... i thought i had bricked it. But i took out my battery, sim card, and SD card and tried again and it turned on. I was super relieved.
Anyway, now on CM 6.1.2, im having a few issues/bugs.
1) how do i restore all my old info? Contacts/apps all that stuff? Im not sure how to bring it all back.
2) My home button doesn't work. I have to keep using the back button if i want to get anywhere.
Thanks to the community for helping me achieve this! Just a few more questions though, thanks !!

Once you sign back into your google account, your contacts should flood back in...apps can be reinstalled via the market (if you flashed the google apps package)
Try rebooting, your home button may work after that

tried to add my old google account and it said 'unable to open connection to server'
?
and i rebooted and that didnt work, for the home screen. i went back and wiped everything again and installed CM 6.1.2 again and the home button still doesnt work.
very aggravating.

just a question. If you wipe and flash Sense back to the phone does the home button work?

im not sure, do i just do a factory reset or something?
or restore from the recovery reboot?

also, market place is not on the phone?

boot into recovery > wipe/factory reset > then you go to backup/restore > restore > then pick that Nandroid back up.

Then it sounds like you did not flash the G/AAPS as well. If you only flashed CM6.1.2RC2 you will not have ANY Google Applications. G/Mail, G/Talk, Maps, market. all those will be missing.

just did the restore -
home button works, everythings just like i left it.
its an RC so im unsure of it being a bug? Not really sure what else it could be.
maybe an earlier build? i dunno

I would just upgrade to clockwork 3 and flash CM7 Build 23, everything (with the exception of qik) works here and its gingerbread!

well i have the download, and after i wiped everything i installed the CM 6.1.2 RC2 first. after that was done, i installed the gapps zip file i had.
how else should i have done it?
would there be any downside to just using applanet?

UGH, thats what i tried initially, but i was having trouble flashing clockwork recovery 3.xxx to my phone (keep in mind im a super noob)
i saw that link someone posted for people that are having trouble, where you push the flash_image file to your phone.
it said put the flash_image file (and yeah, i unzipped it and used the file not the .zip) in the root of your SD card.
and im not quite sure where that is (i know i know, im learning dont laugh!)

ON CM6.1.2RC2 /which is an Android 2.2 ROM/ yes it will install pre signing it..... you can either sign in at the beginning to auto download the applications or you can skip it and add it via, Accounts & Sync to skip the auto downloading... Only Gingerbread currently installs G/APPS post signing in.
If they are having a problem connecting to the Wi-Fi you should still get all the applications it will just not allow you to do anything.

much much much thanks to this guy
he walked me through flashing clockwork recovery 3.0.0.5 to my phone. i had a few issues with renaming the clockwork recovery file a .img, and where to put files and such, and he helped me through all that.
i was able to do it successfully and then push CM 7 nightly 23 to my phone, and am running it perfect
so its my first day doing this and ive pushed CM 6.1.2 RC2 to my phone, and now CM 7. it was a great day in learning for me.
one problem is, i logged in to my google account, and it says everything is sync'd and im getting emails and such - but my contacts still haven't transfered. no biggy though, i can put them on again.
question - in the future is there a way that i can make a backup of all my apps, and all my data and that stuff, so that if i put another nightly over it, or switch to another build i can keep all that stuff?

Buy Titanium Backup from the market! It's the best $5 you'll spend. You can backup your existing apps with the data. You can also freeze bloatware if there are any on the phone. I doubt you'll need it as CM7 is very very slim already
EDIT: Make sure when you reinstall your contacts, you sync it with google. Next time you do a clean wipe, you can sign in and they will apprear. On the nightlies, you can just flash the new builds over the old ones. I do a clean wipe every 3 builds to keep it clean. You can also backup you ADW or LPP settings so it will be easy for you to restore on a new wipe. Hope this helps!

Android market, doesn't remember my downloads?

Hi everyone
So I just flashed cyanogens 5.0 mod and I just assumed android market would remember what applications I had downloaded (yes, I'm an Android newbie) so you can imagine my surprise when only one of my previous downloads showed up!
I have no idea where I got it from but I was under the impression the Google saved my download history in Market? I mean it obviously remembered that one application lol
Any help is appreciated!
It does sort of. On the first boot after flashing a Tom go straight to the downloads and your apparently will show. Install all your Alps right then, if you leave the download page they go away. I hop Google fixes that soon.

No way! So I'm screwed? Well that sucks...
Is there really no other way? If I re-flash it, will I be given the same "chance" to go to market right away, or was that a one shot deal?
I think its one shot but it would hurt yo try.
No luck... I guess I'm screwed huh
Actually another 5 apps showed up in Market after a while, but that's it.
I'm still in shock that it didn't remember all my apps, I mean, whats the requirement?? gah...
Sorry man, at least it will always remember your paid apps even when you switch devices. But for next time if you wipe first thing you do is redownload your apps.

Lesson learned my friend, lesson learned...
Thx for the help!
Actually, when you boot up your phone for the first time (or after a wipe), there's an option for you to select if you want Google to save all your settings. If you don't check this option, your downloads (and other stuff I'm not exactly too sure about) won't save when you wipe or change phones.
I flashed Cyanogen's ROM yesterday and my whole list of downloads were there. Downloading them was a bit of a hassle though...

Yeah I do get that question after flashing, have no memory of getting it first time I started the phone tho.
I always checked that option when I got it, thinking it was a good idea, guess I'll try not checking it next time, but I guess by now the damage is already done.
Hey, I just restored my nandroid to before cyanogen, and all the apps are there now in downloads again.
Perhaps there's a way to save this yet
Missing apps
Actually thing happened to me today after installing 5.0
all of my apps where gone except for the paid ones so what i did was restore from my nand backup copied all of my apps down, and then i went ahead and re flashed 5.0

Is it really worth the hassle to avoid redownloading all the apps? I'm assuming by now the OP could have reinstalled the apps a hundred times already.

Sure I could have done that, but I'm used (from the windows mobile world) to flashing my phone at least once a week, and I'll probably keep that up here so I want to make sure I have a simple way to restore my applications afterwards.
I appreciate the help everyone, I'll try to re-flash later and see if they show up
Flashed CM 5.0 beta 3 now and went straight to market and voila, all my apps are present! :-D
Thanks everyone for taking your time to help me!

Bricked Vibrant, Assistance greatly appreciated

Hi all,
Sot of new to modding, think I screwed up and could use some help. Was doing this one click speed fix: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7587405&postcount=417
It didn't appear to work the first time, as I received a message and exited the application, however the symbol was still in the notification bar. Re-ran it, and it seemed to have worked, mostly, as the phone was blazing fast. Went immediately to run quadrant and check the benchmark, but it force closed every time it hit the i/o section. tried to go to market, foreclose every time. Figured it may need a reboot, powered off, and that's was all she wrote.
I can get into the battery charging screen and have been able to get to recovery, but nothing else. I haven't used adb or ODIN at all yet, but any assistance is greatly appreciated.
The phone was already rooted, and i have titanium back up and nandroid backups, but don't really know how to get to them.
If you did a nandroid backup, just go in recovery screen and restore backup. If not, flash back to stock rom.
well maybe i dont know what im talking about then. I guess I thought i did a nandroid.
When i go into recovery i get four options: reboot system now, reinstall packages, clear all user data, clear cache data.
none of them work
Did you install clock work recovery via Rom manager?
well it has turned on now. removed sim and memory card and hit reinstall packages. ive got the standard twlauncher running but, it repeatedly gives me force close notifications that android.process.media has stopped and i cannot access the menu

yes, i did. i remember doing that precisely as shown in your tips and tricks thread
alright, so i got it into download mode, gonna reflash everything to stock and see where i went wrong as outlined here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Will update with results, but would be nice to figure out where i went wrong so as not to repeat the error.
If you can get into recovery just wipe and reflash eugenes vibrant4.zip.
Alright, back to stock. unrooted also? gonna mess some more and see if i can get my clockword recovery to restore everything.
okay, so my theory is that the lag fix i used installed an update.zip that overwrote the clockword mod one. Now im just trying to restore using titanium backup, but it is telling me that it doesnt have root access. i know im rooted, as i just did it and reinstalled rom manager and drocap. hmmmmm.....
Thats not all thats funny. i cant find the superuser app anywhere on here. also, i cannot install one from the market.
and im having issues with root explorer.

You need to root again to get the superuser on your phone. As for the one click lag fix, I used to original method and it went pretty well. No problems so far. I also flashed Vibrant4 by Eugene before doing the lag fix. Hope it helps
same thing happened to me. I'm stuck on the galaxy S boot screen. i can get into the samsung recovery screen but not the clockwork recovery. I backed up my nandroid and Rom but don't know how to get into the menu to restore. I only have the update.zip for the lag fix on the internal sd so can't restore that way. Any ideas? Much appreciated.

There may be other ways around it, but I restored fully to stock, then re-rooted. I'm back up and running no problem now. Had some issues with titanium backup but got around that and its batch restoring as i type.

Would you mind saying how you did that?
I tried wiping and flashing the stock via renaming it update.zip, and I'm still getting FC city. Mostly media, but, calendar, everything. I'm going to post a link to this in that thread, since many, it seems, were left hanging in a boot loop.

I did this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475 to get back to complete stock, then i had to root it twice. Once did the one click, then the good root here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7150299&postcount=1
back up and running. had to research about titanium backup to get it up and running. I want to do the lag fix still, but im nervous from before.
Your nervous? I really would like to do this but i'm scared (cuss)less.
I've read what needs to be done and think that I've figured it out.

phone you have....don't get me started on the apple pie!
But, really when it gets a simple as installing an .APK I'll be happy.

The galaxy s seems pretty hard to brick. I'd say just go for the lag fix. Worse thing that happens is you have to take like 15min to download and use odin to reflash to stock. The lag fix seems pretty safe as long as you stay rooted

Vibrant Recovery Mode HowTo
THIS GUIDE WORKED ON USA T-MOBILE SAMSUNG VIBRANT BUT MAY VERY WELL WORK ON ALL SAMSUNG GALAXYS PHONES
After reading many XDA-Developers Forum Posts to try and figure out how to get into the Recovery Mode / Download Mode without any success, I gave T-Mobile Support a call.
After the usual noop run-down, "did you take the battery out" questions, I simply asked them how to get the Samsung Vibrant into recovery mode.
Unline the many tutorials that claim to require the Up or Down button pressed, along with the Home button then the Power, the true process is as follows:
1. Press the Up and the Down button at the same time (yes both). I too thought that button was a Toggle which only did either Up or Down, but found that in fact it does do both.
2. At the same time, press the power button.
3. As soon as the Samsung / Vibrant logo comes up on the screen, release the power button.
4. Release the Up and Down buttons.
5. PRESTO

do you actually have the market, or is the google apps zip not flashing at all?
try clearing the data and cache from the market app(settings, applications, then choose market app, then hit clear data and cache). See if that fixes your downloading issues.
I dont have the market, the rom doesn't come with any apps put in by google and it wont let me install any apps whatsoever through the file manager..and i have no marketplace either so it's just ridiculous.. lol but whatever i've decided to go back to ice glacier till cm7 is good...ice glacier is MUCH more stable
Appears you haven't followed cm7 install instructions. gapps zip should be flashed the FIRST time you install, along with the ROM. Then, on your first use of the Market app - automatic or you cancel out during first boot provisioning sequence - Market will download all your previously installed apps for you. Like magic.

i tried everything. what you said what i said what others told me. nothing worked.
You stated Market was not installed. You also stated you followed directions correctly. One of those can't be the case.
Try a complete reinstall. From recovery, format /system, factory reset, then reinstall both cm7 and gapps from their zips. On the first boot, you'll be prompted to select some apps from Market. You can cancel out to set up wifi or do other stuff...but the first time you run Market you'll get the same opportunity. When Market runs, all apps you've downloaded will be downloaded again.
Be very careful restoring any system data from Titanium Backup. Email data and SMS data, AW Launcher should be ok.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #28
go to rom manager.
under "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Your current recovery should be 2.5.1.4 and not 2.5.1.2
Be sure you have the latest build to install gapps.
May the force be with you.
Not trying to sound like an ass but I honestly have tried everything you guys have said but they all did not work I didn't com on here and ask for help when there's many threads for that I've looked I'm not the retard that reads nothing and then asks for help..I posted this thread cause nothing has worked whatsoever..
Let's get this straight. You did a COMPLETE wipe as described, installed cm7, installed gapps, booted, and you weren't prompted to run Market or cancel during that first boot sequence? Or after your boot completed, Market wasn't installed?

Yep i've even tried installing cm6 same problem..i guess i was not destined for cm..
I can only think of two possibilities. You will, I'm sure, laugh at #2, and assume it is an impossibilty. Yet I think it more likely than #1. But you can test #1 by creating a new, temporary gmail account. If you don't get Market, then the answer must be the one you don't believe: #2.
1. There is something dreadfully wrong with your gmail account settings.
2. You are missing a critical step in the installation process.
If you do find things working with your new gmail account, you could compare account information and try to effect repairs -- Google's dashboard might be a place to start.
yea if your not getting market thats a big issue..... are you using the right gapps? cause CM6 and CM7 have different Gapps i think. i know you think we're a bit retarded cause you've gone through and tried all these methods. but unless you give us a FULL detailed account of exactly everything you did we won't know. not to bash just letting you know. and yea i know its frustrating just take your time. dont want to brick your phone.
nah i kno you guys are trying to help lol ill try the gmail account thing tho and let you guys kno how it goes :] and i also used the gapps appropriate for each cm hehe i generally follow exactly what needs to be done... but thnx for the help guys sorry if i went off earlier..

Have you tried a fastboot wipe before installing CM7? That would be my suggestion. Also, make sure you are flashing thru recovery so you can make sure to be able to see any errors while flashing. It sounds like it isnt even installing any of the apps that are included. You can also use a file explorer and look in your system/app folder and see if anything from the gapps zip has been installed. You can also take the vending.apk and push it via adb or copy and paste it via Androidmate (free in market). Just make sure you check and fix the permissions to match all the other apps in the folder.
I really think a fastboot wipe will do it but you can try and check the other stuff first. Maybe it is placing them but not installing for some reason.
Well the gapps aren't the only problem tho which is why I don't think it's an installation problem. Even if iI tried installing other apps it just says app not installed like the package installer isn't working...maybe the main problem lies there?

Cyanogenmod 7 and Marketplace

I just upgraded to CM7 and love it. The new interface is awesome, plus it seems like my phone even operates faster.
Howeverrrrr... I can't open up my Marketplace at all now. This only started happening when I upgraded; I upgraded about an hour ago. Marketplace worked fine this morning before the upgrade.
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know what I can do to fix it?
What is it you upgraded from? Which version of GAPPS did you install?
CM 6.1 I think. And... I don't know what that is. Can I check it?
When I bought the phone it already had the mod on it.
Ok.. So when switching rom families, such as going from CM6 to CM7, there are a few things you have to do. You need to do a wipe, you install the new rom, then you install gapps.
gapps are the google apps, including market, gmail, etc.
There are plenty of instructions around for how to do all of this. How did you do the upgrade? Are you using rom manager?
JTB
i also installed CM7 today and gapps, but it will not install gmail, youtube and a few others. i used rom man and wiped everything and when i went to install gmail it said it could not be found from the market.

I have this same issue to, when I try to get those apps from the market it won't install anything at all...And yes i wiped everything before flashing the rom too.
It won't install or it try to download but fail immediately??
If it does that, then it could be that you have some custom MTD partition and that could screw it up. There is a solution, either resize your cache partition to something larger, like 50M, or there is another solution by doing:
su
cp -a /dev/cache/download /data/cache

I didn't wipe anything, which is probably why it doesn't work. There was a notification, that said Cyanogenmod 7 was available, so I just updated it from there. Didn't do anything else.
Is there a way I can just remove the old rom, or something? Or do I have to remove CM7 and then re-install it?
I got to say that RC1 IS SMOOTH... I been sporting it for a few days. The only issue I came across the email not gmail but email. Is doesn't redress sometimes.s but its the bees knees.....

Not sure what you mean by removing the old rom - by installing a new rom you replaced the old one. However, if you didn't wipe the phone then you can run into trouble with data in a different format than your new rom expects. This can, of course, cause weird behavior
You can try just wiping the phone from clockwork - you shouldn't have to re-install the rom, but maybe... Of course all your apps and settings will be lost.

Tried that, wiped the phone and the SD card. The CM7 rom is still there, but I lost everything. The Market was completely gone this time, I had to download it off of a forum. When I did download it, it didn't open at all again.
Anyone know of a way that I can download another rom, or go back to the original rom, to replace CM7?

Just download a different rom, put it on your sd card, boot into clockwork recovery and install..

if you don't mind explaining, how do you resize the cache partition? if i do the:
su
cp -a /dev/cache/download /data/cache
method, do i need to do that on windows cmd or on the phone's terminal emulator? my phone has that problem you described, except I don't think I have a custom MTD partition, I just rooted my phone, didn't do S-Off either.
thanks

Titanium Backup- doesn't sync settings

Hi,
I have a problem with TB.
I setup custom labels in the app and clicked on the Sync TB settings box in preferences. But when I wipe and flash a new rom and reinstall the app, my labels do not return.
Another issue I have is when I try to create an update.zip file. I go to flash it and it doesn't install. I've tried both signed and unsigned and it's the same result.
Anybody got any ideas?
1 labels for what? and are you backing up the correct thing to back them all up?
update.zip has always been flaky for me as well. when are you flashing it? ive noticed it doesnt work after flashing rom but after rebooting doin a few things in the rom (im sure you could just boot back to recovery after sign in) and flashing its there annnd thats on aosp roms i have had less sucess on sense roms

from TB you can create custom labels and then associate an app to them. Since the labels are created in TB, it is part of the settings. With the sync settings option selected, TB should be saving the settings to the SD card.
Theoretically, I should be able to wipe the phone and then re-install TB which is theoretically suppose to sync the previous settings and the custom labels should come back.
then when in filters the label is selected and you hit apply, all of those apps that were associated with the label should appear.
This makes restoring apps from a fresh ROM much easier than rifling through old back-ups.
Thanks for the heads up on the update.zip.
bump. with question
Does anybody have a suggestion on how to do the above easier?
How do you guys and/or gals flash new roms and get your most used apps up and running quickly?
Flash rom, download titanium, batch restore. Takes about 30-60 minutes depending on how many apps I restore.

Solved :
Figured out what happened. The ROM I flashed had TiBu installed and didn't sync previous settings.
I uninstalled TiBu and reinstalled it. And it works.
