I hope I'm not being an idiot here, but it seems like the full UXJL1 Rogers Froyo source is available at http://opensource.samsung.com/.
The download is 468MB and goes extremely slowly, so I'm not sure what's in it yet, but it's looking good.
hmmm...interesting. Does this mean what I think it means? Many developers were wanting the actual source.

I'm still downloading, but if this is actually the full source, this means we could have a proper Captivate kernel, and if we're willing to sacrifice modem speeds, we could have bluetooth headset calling compatibility and noise suppression compatibility with a kernel better than stock.

If it's source, wouldn't we be able to extract the drivers from it, too?
Hsupa really isn't all that important to me.....I've been waiting for more captivate specific roms and kernels..
Maybe someone can convince hardcore to build a speedmod kernel with this as the base

We should be able to, but there's something about bluetooth calling that seems to need the exact right kernel/modem/ROM combo.
And this is definitely the source.

Personally, I have dreams of a vanilla FroYo ROM that isn't just a stripped/themed Samsung ROM...
I really need an AT&T Nexus S to be officially announced soon!! I couldn't care less about the awesomeness of the Atrix, etc, I'd give up quite a bit for a solid Google Experience phone on AT&T. If I still could have bought a new Nexus One when I got my Captivate, I probably would have.
NICE!!! Hopefully we'll see some meaty updates from our fav ROM devs over the next several days with this source in hand

Same here. A AT&T compatible Nexus S would be sweet. But I'm a little hesitant on giving up the external sd card. The Atrix looks sweeeet too.
Now, will these source help in creating a AOSP rom like CM?
It doesn't seem like well ever see a fully functional aosp rom....

My fiance has a captivate also. It's horrific. The voice quality is fine, but she nearly made my ears bleed by spraying Windex while on the phone with me once. The most subtle noises are amplified by this phone with an i9000 setup.

It is probably due to the fact that the audience chip uses dual mics, one to pick up your voice, the other to pick up background noise and filter it from the primary mic. Without working drivers, I assume both mics pick up sound and get sent as part of the phone conversation.

Well yes, but it is like the black sheep of the family. I'm pretty sure a CM6 build for the Vibrant/Captivate wouldn't work on the Epic due to the hardware differences.

The difference chances are would be minor...there is no reason why not to support it...
Reason my guess it will be minor is it would be too much hassle for samsung to create separate firmware just for 1 phone one 1 carrier when they are distributing the phone to so many companies...so chances are it will be 99% the same..

I don't think not having Cyanogen is a dealbreaker.
Cyanogen was what made me love my Nexus, but it doesn't make a phone unlove-able.
As long as there is a good recovery image, optimized kernals, and theme support in the community, I'd be happy.
Then again, if he just made CM6 for the Epic, it would make things alot better.

That is true. I am so anxious to get this phone, I am going to keep my nexus though as my stand alone developer phone and dev android only, it is a headache to dev on my nokia n900 sometimes.
I don't want to have to rely on Samsung for software. I've heard Touchwiz is buggy and slow and Samsung has a bad reputation for pushing out updates. The hardware on the other hand looks absolutely phenomenal and with CM6 loaded on it, it would leave other phones in the dust.

As for Touchwiz being laggy isn't really true, whats lagging is the crappy RFS partition which is limiting our I/O...thus causing the lag...we have a fix for it but it still needs a bit improvement...
But for this phone chances are Samsung will support it...

I can't really speak too much on it, being that I don't own one, but apparently the community fix raises the I/O performance back within the range of the Droid X. I'm not worried at all about it, personally. If Samsung doesn't fix it, the community will

samsung is holding an event on the 16th to show off the media hub on the galaxy s phones and to show off some new models. I'd expect them to make an official announcement then since they've been rather quiet recently.

eh, the G2 isn't much of an upgrade over the slide so I'd say you made the right choice.
Well with verizon's version of the galaxy s out, i think there is nothing to hold a massive upgrade to all versions back.
given that the tab is going to be running froyo real soon, the galaxy s phones shouldn't be that far behind. in fact, i think they should get the update first, but hey, what do i know
is this the latest update we'll get? will we be getting 3.0?

considering the number of devices sold, we'll probably get 3.0
Gingerbread would be great and a good pr move on the part of samsung. My expectation is low though simply because they will want people to buy new phones. Gingerbread will be an easy upgrade too because out would be vanilla with touchwiz and widgets being addons. The Tab has similar hardware and it may get it, making a custom ROM likely.

Last I checked, Samsung hasn't actually offered a phone to 100 carriers around the planet, including all 4 US national carriers.
As long as a single large American carrier demands the next version of Android, we ALL will get it.
I don't see the connection between froyo and the gps fix. If it was an android fix then we should have a fix already, I expect it is firmware based.

Im thinking this is also true, which leads me to think that this phone is going to be pretty damn awesome after 2.2. Then again this could just be wishful thinking...
Just wondering how the GalaxyS community is going to react if 2.2 isn't 100% PERFECT.... :grabs popcorn:
mmmm popcorn.... mmmm (visits microwave...)
anyone whining bout the gps fix needs to check out rooting and flashing eugenes vibrant 9 rom, ive made this comment like 15 times buuuuuut. i get a lock within 10meters in only 10 seconds with the gps on and the cell tower assist feature on. no nead to play around in Lbstestmode menus just turn on location settings in the menu open maps and find "my location"... and this is inside my apartment....
I cant wait for ALL the bonuses in 2.2 like flash and included wifi tethering but do we really need to make a million threads about it??? lol
Just wondering if anyone has thought about adding a flash to the camera. Don't know if or how it could be donebut there a people here a lot smarter than myself in these types of things.

I have no use for a ffc but a flash, that would make this phone ab?out perfect. Is the hardware available? This is one I would like to try.
...
I'd love to try this if someone could tell me how!
Could have used one at last Saturday night's Halloween party. Totally forgot that it didn't have one. Was thinking of my Nokia E63.
I'd be all over this. It is beyond me how a high end handset such as the Vibrant is released with no flash function essentially rendering a great camera useless at night.
Until someone actually figures out how to hack a LED onto the back of the phone (?), there's always this:

And the answer is that I wanted the best phone I could get. My other choice at the time was the Evo but I sacrificed a flash for 48gb of storage and slightly lower TMobile mmonthly bill. The flash is a minor issue and I was only curious if anyone had modded one on the Vibrant.

this kind of response annoys me so much. I don't care what kind of software you got loaded. It is no replacement for a flash. Try taking a picture of people while out at night in bar lighting. It ain't good. Not unless you're taking pictures of statues using a tripod.
Have a friend with a phone with good camera take a picture of the same thing in low lighting using flash and you with your fancy software then compare. Not even close.
Who wants to take their Nikon around everywhere with them?
Still a mystery why some models have it and others don't, but regardless, anyone know of an add on case/cover with a light? I know they were made for the original iphones...

Two-three months ago there was CM6,MIUI,CM7 and more original roms in the works, what happened?
Yeah i know that for CM7 they are waiting for official GB to drop but what about CM6 that was 90 percent finished and MIUI that was almost finished?
I know that we still got roms but most of them with exception of ACS and few others are mostly remixes and tweaks of stock rom.
Our Epic is way behind Vibrant,Fascinate and Captivate.
It's just you. Don't knock what the amazing developers have done for us. We have plenty of roms and we will have plenty once gingerbread drops.

This is my first experience with custom ROMs and I for one am very content with the amount of development for the Epic. I have looked at other forums and yes there may be a larger following, or more talk about development, but a lot of it seems to be garbage. I have flashed and used a few different ROMs now and they are all solid with few if any bugs. SRF is what I am running now and I have not found a single functionality issue. I also love that the Epic devs continue to improve their product instead of releasing some piece of crap ROM and never touching it again. Also the relatively smaller quantity of development makes things like qbking's videos possible and help all of us learn to better utilize the phones potential.
I say cheers to the devs for what they do and the time they put in! I could never accomplish even a portion of what they do. Thanks guys!

I love this phone. That is all.
Sent from Godot's place.
we have several quality ROMs and Themes to choose from
It should come as no surprise really. There are 3 main reasons why it may seem development is slow:
Small community. Meaning that our sample set in which developers are drawn is smaller. Thankfully, this phone was top notch in hardware when it came out, so it increased our chances of having very talented developers since it naturally drew people who seriously appreciated hardware. Hence, why we have a small number of developers but they're all very very good at what they do. It could have ended up with a small number AND not a lot of quality.
Touchwiz. What I mean by this is that we're still waiting on a fully functional AOSP based rom, with CM7 being the closest to completion. Without it, all there is to develop on is touchwiz, and we've pretty much exhausted what we can do with it (so far). Once there's one ROM on AOSP, that allows for more ROMs to be developed on AOSP. Plus, the completion of CM7 could very well attract developers who prefer to develop on AOSP to try a couple projects, and have simply been waiting for CM to be completed. This all ties in with reason number 3.
Froyo. Like touchwiz, we've pretty much done all we can do with it. With the release of gingerbread, it'll open up a whole new opportunity to develop. Remember, we went through the same thing towards the end of eclair's life. Not a whole lot of development, and everyone really just waiting for froyo. The difference was, however, that everyone was itching SO BAD for froyo that a lot of projects were done on DK28; we were truly behind the times then, and so even the developers were willing to play with a leak. Not so much now; we're not AS behind the curve considering there are still few phones (besides newly released ones) on gingerbread. This, too, is much like the anticipation of an AOSP precedent as mentioned previously: it's quite possible that there are potential developers who are simply waiting for gingerbread to be released before coming to this phone.

can anyone explain to me how the mytouch slide 4g has cm7 and overclocked gingerbread kernels with out gb source?

I don't know, but the easiest explanations are:
More developers? Better chance to figure out the kernel drivers on their own.
It's made by HTC? It's pretty much a known that samsungs kernel drivers are always wacky, and in general, what one phone has doesn't neccessarily help with another. With HTC, their kernel drivers are a little more consistent across phones and it's easier to make things work by borrowing and tweaking.
Linux loaded modules? Don't know if it's relevant, but it's possible to use these to overclock a phone in a round-about way.
There's something that really needs to be laid to rest here regarding the arguement that everybody gives saying "we didn't get cm6 when froyo source was released, so how are we gonna get cm7 just because of gingerbread source?" Two reasons:
One: we only had one dev working on it, noobnl. Now we have a TEAM. And each on is just as if not more talented than him.
Two: we didn't have another device to kang any AOSP driver source from. With cm7, our team borrowed what they could from the nexus s 4g. And rest assured, they DID get a little use out of it.

It's the same phone as every other HTC phone, once they get something working on one all the others get it pretty quickly.

then by the same logic, since the i9000 has gb, we should too? the only difference in the mytouch4g and most other htc phones is a keyboard and 4g. sound familiar?
According to Phandroid.com, the Fascinate on Verizon is getting the Gingerbread Update!
http://phandroid.com/2011/12/01/samsung-fascinate-gingerbread-update-ready-to-roll/
Now T-mobile and Samsung, I have to ask, where is the Vibrant's update?
Galaxy S internatinoal got gingerbread.
Galaxy S 4G got gingerbread.
Captivate has gingerbread leaks.
Fascinate is getting gingerbread.
Vibrant Canada I think got gingerbread also.
So where is the T-mobile Vibrant Gingerbread????????????????????????
Might be more power full if posted in samsung website forum.
yea, post that there. Ive given up on GB anyway, custom roms are better anyway
Accept that it's not coming and 2.2 is the terminal firmware for the Vibrant. You can thank the T-959v for that.

Imagine how better they'd be with Gingerbread source.
Eh doesnt matter anymore. We got devs doing ics, in a week or two more it'll run flawlessly.
wait.. correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the fascinate the same hardware minus the modem (cdma)? if this is the case devs could just as easily rip all the files needed to complete our driver issues on GB. if not oh well.
I believe there is something different with the GPS drivers on the Vibrant, which is why we have so many great ROMs without very good GPS.
Seriously? Another rant about gb for the vibrant? Just flash an i9000 port, and stop complaining. Or get another phone. There are early builds of ics popping up already. the vibrant was one of the first to get an ics build actually....
You disappeared after i showed you battery life on simply honey v6 beta....hahaha...where'd you go buddy?

Why do you want GB now, when it's a year late? They should release ICS rather than GB. ICS is awesome on the vibrant btw

I9000 ports are good, but I need gps daily. If Im not mistaken the only GB kernel that has GPS is about 6 months old. We get an up to date GB kernel with working gps and more will flood the I9000 ROM section.
you guys are stupid for even thinking we'll get a update, if we do im sorry and i will cut my dogs ear off.
P.S. get your ass on ICS.

I understand the need for GPS, but it's really a hit or miss with vibrants. I'll pretty sure i got the first run of units, so gps never really worked well for me, no matter what ROM I'm on.
Granted, if i use the gb bullet kernel, i can get a lock and even navigation, but it takes a while. I just use maps to give me directions, then follow them. Simple solution to a simple problem.

I would agree. I also got one of the first batches of Vibs. I did the hardware fix and things got much better for me. Give it a look if you haven't tried it. May help.
Edit:
Note - my wife and I both got Vibs together. Mine has the hardware fix and hers does not. Mine locks A LOT faster than hers. She is on a 2.2 ROM and Im on Miui as well.

I tried the hardware fix myself, but only by bending the contact up. What exactly did you do to apply the hardware fix?

MIUI-NB edition has a working gps, no need for hardware fix. but go for an older release for more stability

Yep, I'm getting on iOS in January when I switch carriers...
Oh, you said ICS... My bad...
Sorry, ICS = Different look, same nastiness. UI Latency, Adware galore, inconsistent UI across apps, poor market policing, etc.
I'm to the point where I just want something that works. Android is starting to feel like WIndows Me to me now...

Everyone has a choice. Thats why I love Android and iOS. Both have their pros and cons. I am NOT a fanboy. I can point out both advantages for both platforms, and both have disadvantages.
I'm just glad this wasn't like 5 years ago where the only choice for a smartphone = iPhone. I did own a iPhone 3GS, jailbroke it, found nothing interesting to jailbreak except to pirate apps... which i pointless to me. I prefer android, it gives me a change. But again, opinions are opinions.
Tmoble already has the sgs 2 and the sgs 4g. Not to mention that the vibrant was discontinued months ago there's honestly no point in a business point of view updating a phone there not making any money on

And this is why we need source direct from samsung
CM DROPS VIBRANT SUPPORT DUE TO 911 INABILITY:
"We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code."
http://phandroid.com/2011/12/12/cya...le-galaxy-s-support-dropped-due-to-911-issue/
Now do you see why it is so important to have put pressure on Samsung/T-Mobile to release an update to Gingerbread? This is why! Developers are talented but they can't work miracles. We need source/drivers for proper 911 and GPS capabilities just to name a few.
