hey guys. i finally upgraded to windows 7 64bit earlier this month. until now i hadn't messed around with the phone. i went to change my splash screen and realized i hadnt installed anything.
i have the latest sdk and htc sync. both work. i can use adb just fine.
however, fastboot keeps coming up as unrecognized device...i've tried several different suggestions from threads that popped up after a search, but most of them refer to the android sdk/usb_drivers folder....my androidsdk folder does not have any usb_drivers folder...
i've spent over an hour now trying to get this working with no luck...
any help?
What phone do you have? I can help if its an HTC.

oops my bad. i'm so used to posting in the Evo section only that I forgot in here all Android devices apply!
I have the HTC Evo, rev. 3, full nand unlock. i've used fastboot and adb before, when I was on XP SP3. now that I changed to 7 x64 like I said, I found drivers for HTC Sync and ADB but not fastboot.
thanks in advance!
EDIT: figured it out!

I encountered this the other day although i'm not sure how i got around it now! Did you get the xxx.dll missing warning at all? I copied everything from platform tools into the tools folder to solve that one.
Glad you managed to solve the issue anyway.
yeah I had the missing .dll error but copying the contents of platform-tools to tools fixed that

Hey guys,
I am sure this is a topic that has come up in the past, so bear with me.
i recently got a sprint HTC hero(converted by a friend from an iphone)
i hooked it up to my pc and i can't get HTC sync or windows to recognize my phone due to the drivers bug. Windows will only recognize it as a storage device.
I am currently running Windows 7 64 home edition.
i tried the solution posted on the unlocker but have had no luck.
(new user won't let me post link lol)
any help would be great
Thanks!

Indeed,... Let others know how to solve the issue.
Hey guys sorry it took so long for the reply, I was dealing with a family crisis and hadn't had much time to do anything.
you will have to find your sources for Sync and the drivers because i can't post links in the forum.
This is how I solved my problem:
1.Download latest specialized sync tool from HTC, namely HTC Sync 2.04 from HTC
2. Install the downloaded program on the computer. At this moment, your computer still won't recognize the HTC Hero.
3. Manually update the HTC drivers from Windows 7, using the Windows Vista drivers
by installing HTC Sync software on a machine running Windows Vista and then copying the drivers (namely androidusb.cat, androidusb.inf, androidusb.sys, htcrndis.cat, htcrndis.inf and WdfCoInstaller01007.dll in HTC Drivers folder) over to the Windows 7 machine. or you can manually download the drivers from someplace like theunlockr.
4.Extract the driver into a folder. For example, %SystemDrive%:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x64 (for the Windows 7 64-bit) or %SystemDrive%:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x86 (for the Windows 7 32-bit) accordingly.
5.open devices and printers
6. right click your android phone and choose 'properties'
7. go to the "hardware" tab and again select "Properties"
8.on the general tab click"Change Settings"
9. Go to "driver" tab
10. Click "update Driver"
11. The window that pops up will ask how you want to find the driver. Be sure to select the option that allows you to browse your computer for the driver.
12. Navigate to where you saved and unzipped the driver.
13. reconnect phone
now if everything went well HTC sync should recognize your phone.
now if this doesn't work msg me and i will try and help you to the best of my abilities
I know this is a rather old post...but I have recently just switched back to the Hero after taking a trip to webOS land...I have followed these instructions to the letter, but my phone still does not show up in Devices and Printers...Do I need to be using exactly the version of HTC Sync mentioned here, or should newer versions work as well?
Also, in other places I have read, it mentions that the Hero should pop-up a notification asking to allow a connection to the computer or something...I haven't seen this...is there somewhere in an app setting that I may need to change a default value?
I've followed the guide to a T on both a Windows 7 (launched as Admin) and on a XP machine. In both cases the program sits at "Waiting for device...".
Driver installed, USB Debugging set to on. Nothing... Happens...
Never installed Sync on either OS, nor, as far as I know, is it on my phone.
WTF?!
Install Sync.
I'm having the same problem and I have sync installed. Not sure what to do.

Hmm ok I will try installing Sync. Where do I get that from? I can't seem to find it.....
are the hboot drivers installed (different from the motorola drivers)
I followed everything exactly as it said to install the bootloaders and it won't connect to the phone. When I first tried it would connect but I didn't properly install the drivers
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
I suggest a Switch to the Linux version...
Do yourself a favor...download a "live" linux distro (Ubuntu works fine on most all hardware) and use the Linux version of Unrevoked. I went that method after several hours of frustration under Win 7...
I was having this same exact issue! The solution (as someone else mentioned) was to install HTC Sync. Then make sure you close Unrevoked (if you already didn't) and launch it using right click > Run as Administrator.
If you installed the driver properly, it should work!
Btw, when I had the driver installed (the one that Unrevoked comes with) I was still seeing an unrecognized device under Device Manager when I connected my Aria with debugging enabled. Installing HTC Sync fixes that problem.
I couldn't find HTC Sync nor could I really even find out what it was. I'm assuming it's a Windows program?
Anyway, since I couldn't find that, I downloaded the newest Ubuntu distro, ran unrevoked as sudo, and STILL does not connect. STILL says "Waiting for device..." Ran as root, USB Debugging on. This sure is a huge pain in the ass for "Painless root and reflash".....
Is there a forum specifically for this program? I'd love to get some feedback from the developers here.
EDIT:
Ok so I finally got it to work by having the phone plugged in BEFORE running the program as sudo. It was quick and painless after that! Thanks for all the help, sorry about the sarcasm, I got flustered haha.
I had issues with my Aria connecting to PC due to multiple user being logged in at once via Fast User Switching. Me, my wife, and my son are sharing same PCs, and normally all three of us are logged in, and we just switch between our profiles using Windows-L key. And when there is someone else logged on besides me, my Aria simply won't connect -- neither to Unrevoked, nor even to HTC Sync itself.
Same thing was happening to my Nike+ wristwatch before, by the way.
Please try to avoid creating new threads for topics already being discussed. For you issue, please visit the Unrevoked thread. If you cannot find the solution posted there, feel free to create a new post in the existing thread.
so im new to the android phone scene i have had blackberry for 5 years noe and decided to try out the new HTC Evo. but im sooo lost with thing, help!!! please
first off my phone is running the newest software 1.47.651.1
im trying to root the phone but to do so all instructions ive found require using adb. what is this adb? and what is adb shell?
when i plug my phone to my computer it says the adb is not set up and it ask for the driver disk, phone didnt come with this.
also im running vista 32 on my laptop if it makes a difference.
any help with getting this done or where to find info would be great!!
adb is apart of the android SDK package which is required for transfer from computer to phone. google "android SDK" and download + install
you need it in order to transfer the files required for rooting to your phone so i suggest reading the instructions so you know what your doing
Need SDK
Android SDK can be downloaded at the following address:
http://developer.android.com/sdk / index.html
Once downloaded extract the folder to one of the PATH for example E: \ android_sdk_windows
i have tried in win xp and 7.
how to install SDK

I would suggesting following any of the threads on rooting the evo that tell you exactly what to do.

If you have an USB 3.0 port fastboot works
With USB 2.0 Fastboot works only with hboot versions higher than 1.54 :-/

I had problems with an unknown device under Windows 8.1 with 4.3 GPE. Installed OTA 4.4 manually and used this driver. That was why I extracted it. So I think Win 8.1 can't recognize fastboot devices with older hboot than 1.54

Running into a network error on install
Thanks, first of all, for cobbling this driver together.
I'm running Win 8.1 and can't get HTC Sync or fastboot.exe to see my phone (an HTC Vivid running stock firmware). Phone also can't talk to the computer when I attach it in "Sync" mode. From the looks of things, this is a driver compatibility issue.
When I attempt to install the .msi file linked to here, I get a "1316 network error" (screenshot attached). My kung fu is not yet strong enough to peek under the hood to understand what is going wrong here, so I figured I'd ask about it.
My phone's HBOOT screen, if this information makes a difference, is:
HOLIDAY PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.85.0025
MICROP-0360
OpenADSP-v02.6.0.2226.00.0202
eMMC-boot

Adware/Virus...no. Poor choice of file host...maybe. Read a few posts up...uncheck accelerator and don't use the sendspace download manager. The file is clean.

These drivers solved my issues with my Win 8.1 not being able to identify my M8 in Fastboot. Thanks!
I'm still getting unrecognized usb device from Windows using these drivers and in fastboot. I have a 1.54 hboot and usb 2.0. Any other way around this?

Thanks. I didn't run the MSI, I just extracted all of the files to a temp directory and connected the phone and pointed to the directory. It's nice to be able to use my newer laptop to do phone stuff instead of keeping my 8 year old w7 machine around just for this.

I have a HTC one a HTC one mini and an HTC First ....And windows 8.1
the HTC One on hboot above 1.54 worked fine but the other 2 phones would not work in fastboot at all. I went searching and found this fix. and everything has worked fine since then.

Here is my old (dirty) solution:
HTML Code:
#include <std_disclaimer.h>
/*
* Your warranty is now void.
*
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
* thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
* do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
* before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*/
I repeat this is a REALLY DIRTY solution that may harm your system, personal data, hardware and/or cat.
Here are the steps:
0. Have a Linux or Windows LiveCD just in case something goes wrong
1. Download and extract files from attachment
2. Navigate to the folder corresponding to your system version (x86 = 32-bit, x64 = 64 bit)
3. Right-click franken-usb.bat and click "Run as Administrator"
5. Wait for it to finish and reboot the system. If everything went fine, you will boot your system successfully
6. Install ADB/Fastboot drivers just like on Windows 8
7. Connect your phone in Fastboot mode to your USB 2.0 port and check if it works
8. Enjoy and wait for official fix
How does it work:
It's not any kind of magic - it just replaces Windows 8.1's usbhub.sys and usbport.sys with Windows 8's ones.
Old files don't check for BOS descriptor so Fastboot can work.
Script updated - it should now actually copy the files but please double check if files were copied to C:\Windows\system32\Drivers!
Hope it helps you!
Regards!

So running into a problem. I have downloaded and installed ADB but the version installed is 1.0.32. And my computer doesn't find any devices when I type adb devices.
Is this because I need a later version of ADB and if so any clue how to install it on Ubuntu? I have searched the WEB and can't find it.
Cheers!

Thanks DrakenFX for trying. I had already looked at that one. I looked some more and I guess Ubuntu has been having some problems with MTP. The answer for the problem is found at HERE if anyone is running into the same issue.
I use linux as well, but instead of installing the whole Android development kit, I went for the leaner, no-install-required platform-tools, which is the linux equivalent of "Minimal ADB and Fastboot". You can download it directly from Google here: https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools_r23.0.1-linux.zip
Unzip it, open up a terminal in the folder, and type " ./adb devices "

Just to document this in case it would benefit someone else: I have been trying everything I could find on the net to get my A7 recognized by adb devices. The list always came up empty. Yet, on my windows 10, adb devices for my A7 worked. And my htc m7 on ubuntu was also recognized. Finally, I removed the famous 51-android.rules (which had a line for my A7 but not for my m7; on /etc/udev/rules.d) and then adb devices showed the A7.
EDIT:
The day after having written this, I lost the device again: adb devices no longer showed the A7. Again tried everything with no success. Then I downloaded the Android SDK, which comes with version 1.0.39 of adb. Ran that and it worked. Go figure. So I still cannot really put my finger on what made the difference.
