Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/samsung-says-galaxy-tab-sales-to-consumers-actually-quite-small/
"When is a tablet sold not actually a tablet sold? When it's a Galaxy Tab, apparently. As The Wall Street Journal reports, those two million Galaxy Tabs that Samsung reported it had "sold" in the fourth quarter of last year were apparently not actual sales to consumers, but simply sales to distributors (which is a different matter altogether). Even more surprisingly, Samsung's Lee Young-hee further explained on an earnings call on Friday that so-called "sell-out" sales to customers were actually "quite small," but she wouldn't provide a specific number. Somewhat confusingly, however, she also later noted that while "sell-out wasn't as fast as we expected," Samsung still believes that sales to consumers were "quite OK," and that it is "quite optimistic" about 2011."
ahhhhhh who cares about numbers? i didnt get my tab because the Tab sold million, i got it cuz its awesome! but i do admit, one less thing to brag about :/ oh well.
Yeah, and this is the very first company to fudge the figures to make themselves look better.
Seriously OP, WTF are you whining about? They all do it.
Yup, Microsoft did exactly he same with Windows Phone 7 sales. Sales of licences to distributors != phones in consumers hands. They all do it.
Except Apple... the really don't need to. Bastards.
The majority of phone companies do this.
They are correct that they sold 2 million tabs but thats to distributers etc.
So i cant see where they have.misled or decieved someone? They correctly stated how many they have sold.

This effects us how? No offence, but this won't change anyone's opinion on the Tab. I could give a horses Arse if they soils 13million or a hundred, I still love it.
But in their defence, they never stated who the sales were to.

Sadly some people strongly identify with the things they buy and so take it personally when it is perceived to be "not so good".
The kind of people that buy "lifestyle" products.
BTW, as stated above, this is pretty much how these things are reported.
Lol, like it matters. We all love the Tab, regardless of how many they sold
This is quite a gray area...
When I am not traveling the world putting boot to ass for this great country of mine... I work with a very close friend who runs a multi-national corporation manufacturing musical instruments.
When he reports to his share holders, they report sales to distributors. Once the item has been delivered to the distributor or vendor... IT IS SOLD. What they do with them after that is their concern.
Well, Engadget and the WSJ had to admit that they made a mistake. Lee Young-hee said that the sales were "quite smooth" not "quite small" It was a misquote. Engadget issued a correction post here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/01/samsungs-lee-young-hee-was-misunderstood-galaxy-tab-sales-are/
and yet, the statement on engadget is quite sinical aside from the admittance
anyway I'm agreed, I bought the tab coz i like it, no matter how the sales are
I actually preferred things that not too many people had it, coz i want to be different
luckily in my country, not that many tab user, so at least i'm classified as the exclusive ones, not like the iphone user who's become so common they're not as "regal" as before

I agree. I wanted to be different as well. For a good 2 months I haven't seen anyone in my country use the Tab, and when I'm around cafe's, people holding iPads would give me a stare. So far I've only seen one person in my school using one, and one guy I saw in the airport had one as well.
Aside from the Tab, the reason why I love Android much more is because I can make it look so different from other people's devices. So even if I was beside someone who owned a Tab, they would look so different when placed together.
If Samsung updates my gtab to honeycomb I will find it in my heart to forgive them - lol

Guess alot of people are holding back on the tab because of tab2. But I still love & hug my tab. Sales figure doesn' t matters.
lies and deception? LOL. I'm sorry, but what.
If they said they only sold 1 tab, or a hundred zillion, who cares...

LOL.. Dude. personally i think IPAD and iphone is great. There is no need to throw them away. Android too, it's doing a great job. With its open source. It has been catching up fast and after all, the community did a great job in pushing it but all in all, there is stilll a lot of catching up.
Yeah I agree, there are pluses and minuses for both. What I do think proves that the Galaxy tab is viable are all the people on craigslist wanting to trade an ipad for a galaxy tab.

Just saw this here. I made a similar post in the S2 forum already, too.
I can't say this is unexpected, considering their history of trying to copyright air, light, sounds, etc.
Well, good for them -- I'm now going to give the 10" Tab a closer look. Might go well with my S2 in the near future.
Also just seen this.
Gotta admire the gumption of Apple to sue the biggest supplier of the chips they use. Guess they'll use that as ammo against Samsung though.
Probably something along the lines of;
"it's not fair, we 'gave' them all our tech, showed them how to make a tablet, THEN they took that and made an infringing product".
Already had mac-heads gloating with glee, never mind the facts that there were a few dozen Android tablets (albeit not amazing quality, but still...) before Apple would even admit they had a tablet for release.
But yeah, they must be getting scared. Projections are showing how the iPhone isn't getting any new market share, but Android's eating everyone else's lunch. Guess they realise they have to act /really/ early on the tablet area to slow them down, and if they CAN take the Samsung phones out, all the better.
Makes sense really from Apples point of view. They're going after the major licensees of Android as warnings to others and increasing the cost.
But not like the manufacturers really have any options. Board room talks are probably discussing 'well, if this android is an issue, can we do something else?" without really thinking that if they cave on this, whatever else they produce won't have a chance to take off, or if it does, it'll get attacked too.
No, Samsung/Motorola (/mourn Nokia), HTC need to gang up and say back to Apple 'No, YOU back off"

No, there are LOTS of other winners. There are all the BMW dealers who sells loads of cars to lawyers, state and federal lobbyists who get paid big dollars to insure that the lawyers keep on winning, all the legislators in various states and congress people in Washington whose campaign coffers are filled with money from lawyers. Then there are the owners of all the private schools who educate the sons and daughters of lawyers for healthy fees, all the boutique owners who sell expensive clothing to lawyers and the wives of lawyers, the country clubs who charge top dollars for lawyers to play golf and drink imported beer.... and so many others. The list of winners just goes on and on.
The losers are the customers of both Apple and Samsung who will pay more for their products so as to support their legal departments and associated legal fees.
Seriously is apple really that scared?
I really hope this doesn't delay the Australian release.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-...samsung-from-selling-tablet-in-australia.html
They must be that scared
you never heard anything from apple until just recently when the android phones and tablets are really starting to challenge apple, they now see android and the companies that make android phones/tabs as a threat and they cant develop iOS fast enough to stay ahead so are now doing all they can to slow the pace of the android train down.
lets be honest iOS has been the same since launch and it really needs a overhaul.
Seriously?! I used to respect apple with there innovation and cutting edge technology but since they began all these lawsuits and injunctions I have totally lost all respect for them and their "big bully boy" attitude towards its competition. Shame on Apple! They must really fear the 10.1 TAB... Maybe alienating themselves from Samsung who made a fair bit of Apple's components wasn't such a good idea....
For now, Apple has successfully blocked the sale of the galaxy tab 10.1 in Australia till the lawsuit is settled. who know how long that is. I really hope samsung blocks the ipad3!
I don't think Apple is scared, the iPad is way too dominate at this point, I just think they're greedy assholes.

I wouldn't be too sure. Second quarter numbers show that Apple's share of tablets shipped in the second quarter dropped from 96% in 2010 to just over 60% in 2011. Android's market share increased from 2.9% to over 30%.
If that isn't scary to Apple, then they're fools.

Also, no one in Australia drinks Fosters beer because a) it's horrible and no one in their right mind would drink it and b) it's only sold internationally and you can't actually buy it inside Australia unless you're at an airport or something.

Good for Samsung. TBH, they should just kiss & make up. It would benefit if both sides were to do that in the long run.
The tab is now delayed thanks to Apple. I cant believe they are complaining about "touch and feel" and "finger gestures". The only finger gesture Samsung should give apple is....
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/08/samsung-officially-postpones-galaxy-tab-10-1-launch-event/
It's great, a mate of mine has an iPad 2 and I've got my GT10.1 and we can't see any similarities between either of them when we compare em. They're two entirely different beasts for different consumers.
He had a play around with my Tab and was like "dude, this is so different from what I'm used to with the iPad".
I have an iMac and MBP at home. So an iPhone and load would make alot of media swapping easier. But honestly, Android allows me to design the device interface better for how I need it for quick access on the go.
Apple may find themselves on the other side of those law suits when they finally decide to overhaul their UI. Serious, their iOS5 redesign of notifications has been in Android since 1.0! Watch out Apple.... your doing exactly what you are accusing others of doing to you. All you need is to be the Microsoft of the 2000's .... you recall how you dealt with them right? Next you'll be developing an Android iTunes App and an Android iPhone/iPad.
Tread lightly with all your lawsuits. I came to Apple for home computing because my needs are DJ, remix, and simplicity and great one stop support between the two environments. Don't make me regret trusting you by worrying about only the competition and not your customers

Honestly, you're ranting. That's fine, if it makes you feel better, although not sure why you should feel worse. It's big companies fighting it out. Let them.
Give the judge the benefit of the doubt for competence. If the suit was frivolous, Apple wouldn't have secured an injunction. Whatever legal merit the suit has, frankly, we don't know. Getting upset about it doesn't make us understand it any better.

My rant:
Likewise. I bought the second Gen iPod when they were a decent company. Then they got in their mind that they can take over the world (which they might) but I think that is very indecent to innovation. I have never had such a hatred to one company and always will.

It's interesting to me how Apple and Apple fanboys tout their products as the best in the world, yet they feel the need to sue every mobile electronics maker in the world.
It's about time Apple tried to sue someone with a strong patent portfolio. As long as Motorola don't roll over, Apple *are* going to get a bloody nose, because suing over patents nowadays seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the merit of your case.
If there's a rant to be made, it's people's propensity to paint things in good/evil terms ("XYZ is EVIL!"), get more partisan ("I hate THEM! They're the ENEMY!"), and become more blindered in their views ("I'll never buy anything from XYZ!"). It's a self-reinforcing cycle.
Obviously, I'm not just talking about something as trivial as whatever brand of tech toys you espouse. The descent to frothing fanaticism is widespread enough that it is damn annoying and frightening at the same time.

So you're saying is it would be OK to live in a dictatorship country if it was pretty and had good weather?
Sure Apple makes good products, however there are very good if not better alternatives. Apple improves on one product in the market and makes it incredible. Then other companies start making the products better as well and Apple sues them. Happened to mp3 players and iPods, now happening for tablets and iPads. It hurts innovation and I know Google and Microsoft also sue companies but not as much and not as narrow minded/take over the market mentality that Apple has. Now don't get me wrong I have owned Apple before, and yes their products are well made and innovative. But so are a lot of other brands.
But I do agree on the grander scheme of things if we arn't just talking tech toys that yes it is not a good idea to be narrow minded on anything. I believe that's what you were trying to get at.

You are saying this as if it is a new phenomenon.
======short version========
Put simply, it is easier to deal with absolutes and it is easier to convey opinion to others in absolutes.
======long version========
It is human nature to ally with a particular group, society, or set of ideals and denigrate the things that differ from the ideal you are allied with. Countries, religions, sports teams, type of car.... the list is as long as there are comparable objects. It is possible for people to see in shades of right rather than absolutes but this provides no stable platform on which to hang a set of beliefs.
- It is far easier to say "Motorola is incompetent and I will never use them again" than it is to say "Motorola made some serious mistakes with the Xoom but they did do some things right."
- It is easier to say "Motorola is out to screw early Xoom adopters." than it is to say "Motorola is not communicating well with early Xoom adopters."
- It is easier to say "thou shall not kill" than it is to say "thou shall not kill unless it is needed to preserve other life"
- It is easier to say "Other religions are wrong" than it is to say "other religions are different."
- and it is easier to say "Apple is evil" than it is to say "Apple's stance on the similarity between the iPad and Xoom is not reasonable."
Absolutes allow a person to place an idea, group, or company into a position within opinion that requires less thought and little debate. This is comforting to most, requires less consideration, and makes life easier to deal with. The more you deal with a specific idea/group/company the more details you learn and the less likely you are to paint your opinion on the subject with such broad strokes. No one wants to try and know everything in such detail however.
So while it would be better if mankind as a whole took an effort to see the merit in differing opinions on subjects, it is not the nature of man. To try and remove the polarizing nature of the psyche would possibly lead to less conflict but it would also to moral and ethical confusion.
There have been and are individuals who have evolved past this need but those individuals are not common, indeed the most notable have been quite extraordinary.
Here is one take on the patent issue that underlies the various recent legal spats. The commentary delves into more detail than the usual regurgitated pap, and the arguments made are reasonable, at least based on the material as presented.

What is really funny is apple was invented by steve jobs stealing open source programming from someone else, patenting it and putting his name n it, then just having a slick campaign that if u dont buy apple ur not individualistic and being different is cool (as long as it is done in groups...). Then says his product cant be hacked on a tv commercial... Within 48 hours they pulled the commercial because four major hacks came out... So they steal, prey on peoples need to be "cool" and their fear of being hacked... But then turn around and start suing all their competitors. This is not new for them and it is a business tactic now... A pathetic way to slow up progress of their competitors... And their iphone sucks... No expandable memory, no battery pull ability, no open source, poor reception, charges for wifi tethering and it isnt built in, no flash.... Etc etc..

That's a pretty extreme statement.
Apple has the best marketing in the tech world. They also have some decent products, with plenty of objective reasons to choose Apple over the alternatives.
However, remember that marketing is simply making people aware of a product and its features.
I find when talking to people that decisions on platform aren't made over which commercial was the coolest, but rather the features and/or familiarity with the brand.
I would argue that very few people are so superficial as to choose a platform based on "hip"-ness.
The real problem here is not Apple. Whatever you think of iOS, they are just a company using every tool at their disposal to succeed. If roles were reversed any company would do the same.
The problem is a hopelessly broken, pitifully antiquated Patent system that allows absurd patents to be approved.
This problem is compounded by the abuse of "patent troll" companies that never developed a technology or released a product, but simply bought patents and create lawsuits.

It IS the most fastest electronic device to be sold in history.
With all the hype with Samsung they will.
And from each generation of the Galaxy S series, they've always gotten significantly better.
Hopefully iPhone 5 doesn't take over, but I know that they won't stand a chance against the S3.
Apple must be sitting back watching all of this thinking that they better pull something extraordinary out of the bag. Apple will no doubt be suing the pants off Samsung to coincide with the release of the S3.
I'm buying it on the release day, but I haven't pre-ordered it.
Wow, some of you really need to relax with the hate.
Honestly, do you want to know what the absolute best scenario is? For Apple to come out and blow the doors off of the GS3. Why? Competition. Without it, we wouldn't even be here to begin with. The SG1 doesn't exist without the I-phone. If Samsung has no competition, why exactly should they strive to improve?? They definitely wouldn't. So stop rooting for either one of them... and start rooting for your pocket.
At the end of the day, neither of them really care about you. So stop "celebrating" like you have something tangible to gain. You don't. You're merely a statistic. End of story.
I wonder how many of us have pre-ordered from different places? And not only that, people have pre-ordered both variants just in case of delays, and all memory sizes just in case.
So 9 million could well turn into only an actual 4.5 million phones based on colour alone.

Absolutely,that is true.
First, I think this is a bunch of hype and probably overly exaggerated. If there were 9 million pre orders, wouldn't you expect just a little more people on this forum. Both the htc one x and gs2 forums on xda seemed to be more populated before their releases than this forum. Also, I know I live in the U.S. were the phone technically wasn't announced yet, but I only know of one person maybe two outside of the online forums that even knows about this phone. When the iphone 4s was announced almost everyone I knew was talking about.
On the apple talk, did apple ever have a global release? I am pretty sure apple preorder numbers are only on U.S. based customers but I could be wrong.
because this forum represents <1% of users. and people come here after release looking for softmods.

First, I think this is a bunch of hype and probably overly exaggerated. If there were 9 million pre orders, wouldn't you expect just a little more people on this forum. Both the htc one x and gs2 forums on xda seemed to be more populated before their releases than this forum. It's okay, the US is usually late for the parties anyway...
I find this hard to believe. If a new iPhone is coming out, everyone starts talking about it months before. When a new Samsung phone is coming out, only geeks like us talk about it. I haven't heard any buzz about SGS 3.

The "pre-orders" are from carriers and resellers and are stretched out over a year. With the SGS2 selling 20MM copies to not have 10MM pre-orders for the SGS3 would be shocking. Samsung UK's said customer pre-orders are "in the thousands." But the UK carriers all confirmed it's the most pre-ordered device they've sold.
To put the SGS2's success and SGS3's potential in perspective, here's some statistics. In 2011 there were 488MM smartphones sold worldwide. Samsung sold 20MM SGS2's. That means the SGS2 made up 4% of 2011 global smartphone sales. There were 54MM iPhone's sold which represents 11% of the market. So 85% of the world bought something other than the two most hyped and recognized smartphones on the market.
And comparing the SGS2 against Samsung's total sales is interesting. They sold 90MM smartphones in 2011. With 20MM SGS2's sold, 78% of the smartphones they sold weren't SGS2s.
If the SGS3 doubles in sales (which is lofty) over the SGS2 it'll still be behind the iPhone (which itself will grow in sales) and have 8% of the market in 2012; meaning 92% of smartphone buyers will buy something other than the SGS3.
Samsung’s numbers are impressive and they and Apple share 90% of mobile device profit between them. But clearly the sun doesn't rise and set based on a single device; no matter how good it is. There's a reason for the Galaxy Y and One V which will outsell the SGS3 and One X by a large margin.
love the S3 But
There is always going to be a debate between apple and samsung, but I for 1 believe in the competition aspect of it also, I just hope that apple comes out with something that is going to challenge samsung and vice a versa the only winners here r us

With all the hype with Samsung they will.
And from each generation of the Galaxy S series, they've always gotten significantly better.
Hopefully iPhone 5 doesn't take over, but I know that they won't stand a chance against the S3.

Because its an Iphone? And 13 year old girls tend to talk more than normal people?
I really surprised at this, I thought the iPad/Pad would have been well ahead with "most preorders".
Let’s pretend that you’re a blogger. You’re given the chance to review new, hot hardware from a major company. All that’s required is that you participate in some tasks, but these tasks would fit into your coverage so you agree. In return you get to be one of the first to go hands-on with devices and give your opinion on them. Sounds like a good deal? Well that’s what a couple of Indian participants in Samsung’s Mob!ler program thought too, until Samsung threatened to leave them stranded in Berlin, Germany.
First let’s start with the facts. Programs such as Mob!lers (or Mobilers, for my sanity) are in place by many companies. In fact, I’ve even participated in one, for a company called STI, where I’ve done reviews of Kia and Mazda cars. But there’s one factor that differentiates programs such as STI from Mobilers – Only one of them expects you to become a shill for the company.
The story that follows is one of those that’s going to be hard to believe. We’ve done our very best to verify the facts, and we’ve heard the same tale from multiple sources and the end result has been the same in each case. That said, let’s go back in time a few weeks....

Ridiculous act by Samsung.Whatever sympathy they gained after the lawsuit is gone
Your judging the whole company based on the actions of one local branch of Samsung that was based in India.
Samsung are not to blame here but people employed at the Indian branch of theirs.
P.S That's typically the way Indians do business, the workers tend to get abused, they don't care about your rights.

Free flights for wearing a T Shirt?
Heck they are just bloggers. Not even real Journalists. They are lucky they are even given that. I wouldnt give them a free pen with the quality of internet blogging these days.
I am a Mob!ler in the UK and I will not comment on this incident as I do not know anything other than the same evidence you are presented with, however in an effort for you all to get the 'full story' please read this - http://www.amitbhawani.com/blog/samsung-mobilers-ifa-2012/
in summary - the guys would have known fully what was going to happen before he arrived in Berlin.
Why didn't they just wear the damn T-shirt?
Samsung flew them out for free, free accommodation, and these bloggers can't even accept a free T-shirt to promote Samsung???
Although you can't blame Samsung for an individuals actions.
Can you really blame Samsung for this when all that's needed is a verbal warning to an employee for his actions?

question is not about wearing a tshirt, it was as opposed to being a promoter to them being there as a reporter.

They new damn well what they were supposed to be doing before they went. They just wanted to go and not have to take part. It's aload of bull.

Maybe some of you should have read the entire article and the one specifically about "Jeff" that followed. It wasn't "just wear a t-shirt", it was them being given the choice of being there as a reporter or a promoter. As bloggers, they stated they would be there in the capacity of reporters. Upon arrival, they were told they would be required to be in a Samsung uniform and work in a booth as a promoter. You have ZERO credibility as a journalist if you're known to have been actively promoting a product. Did you read this?
In the invitation email, Jeff reports that he was asked whether he’d like to attend as a reporter or as a promoter. He was insistent that he would only accept the offer if he was allowed to do so as a reporter.

I've been to similar events (although not flown overseas) as a photographer. Was I there as a promoter or a reporter. I always choose Reporter. I may not be allowed to some private portions of the event, but I have unfettered ability to give an unbiased account...and not tow some company line.
Until I hear otherwise, I'll take Samsung at their word that this was a huge misunderstanding on the part of the local Sammy reps at the event. Big companies don't pull nonsense like that on journalists. That tends to bite you in the arse when every news site picks up the story.

Knowing how Samsung operate these events, no guarantees would have (or should have) been given before they left India as to if they would have been reporters or promoters, Samsung split these roles 50/50 for all Mobilers in attendance and don't decide before everyone arrives who is doing what.
Obviously I cannot comment on what was actually said in this instance or if either party is telling the truth, I can only tell you from what I have experienced myself.
(to any journalists looking at this! THE GUARDIAN! - do not use what I am saying without permission and certainly not if its incomplete or out of context - I do not know the facts of this case and I am merely commenting on my Experience as a Mob!ler which does not match in anyway what has gone on here)
Well, it is all hearsay at this point. Samsung did apparently acknowledge a misunderstanding. With them being in the media spotlight, I'm sure they're gonna do all they can to make this go away.
Who do they think they are? Im too good to wear a samsung T-Shirt? What did they expect to be treated like royalty? LOL
Anyways... Yes the people that worked for samsung at that indian branch may have done some very stupid things and said some stupid remarks and made samsung look bad. But samsung is not at fault I can guarantee you if the big boys at samsung heard this was going on they would of flew them home straight away.

It's tough these days to really qualify people... "bloggers" for instance. That could be someone who is published regularly at CNET or someone who has a Wordpress blog with 3 subscribers. So, I guess I have to lump them all together and give them the benefit of the doubt.
If you're promoting a product, your credibility is zilch. There's a particular photography review site that was purchased by a large company that sells cameras and lenses. From that point forward, all their reviews are glowing. Because they're selling the products, too. They have zero credibility. I go there for the spec lists and disregard everything else.
So, these 2 dudes wanted to maintain journalistic credibility and I respect that. Say you were this "Jeff". A small-time blogger in India, and you pumped out some really high quality work that caught the eye of some major player like CNET, Verge, etc. They consider adding your stuff to their site. Oops- look, there's pictures of Jeff in a Samsung uniform working a show booth. Dude's a corporate shill. We can't take his work as unbiased. Next!
Like I said, this is all hearsay. And I'm just speculating and presuming the 2 articles were accurate. But IF they're true, maintaining credibility is vital in journalism.
While I agree with Mr. Crane's viewpoint (above), I must say that it is Samsung India that is at fault.
Also, I'd wear the t-shirt and do a bit of promotion work if Samsung is giving it all away for free. If I were a journalist, it would raise my online presence (by being at a special event and covering it myself). Then, after I have my hands on with the product (sometime after the launch), I'd give my full and honest opinion about it.
For example, I absolutely ADORE the S3. It's the best smartphone ever made. Period. BUT I do wish they'd given us more RAM. Is 1.2-1.5 gb of RAM too much to ask? I really don't want crApple beating us on this. Nothing is a match for the Note 2 but it's a tad too big for my taste.
