I would try vlingo. Awesome app.. Reads texts to you, you can compose texts too, with the push of a big button
I agree with aimbdd about vlingo. It will look up anything, navigate anywhere, or start any app you have just by voice command. In the car, it's excellent, since it reads your texts and emails to you as they are received. And it's very easy to text someone with just your voice while driving in the car. Excellent app.
Alternatively, have a look at DriveSafe.ly that is what I use on my phone and love it.

Hey guys, I just reccently bought my Hero, (AWESOME PHONE BTW) rooted it put unoffical v1.2c MoDaCo on it. I came from a jail-broken iphone 3G, and this is quite a different experience. Overall I'm loving this phone I just don't know what to do next. I'm looking for app suggestions, theme suggestions, general advice and words of wisdom, anything you can give me to help make the most out of this awesome phone.
One thing I need input on most input on is how to make my phone google voice friendly. I have google voice installed but I'm still getting text messages to my non-google voice number that I'd like to forward to my google voice number any idea how I would do that? Are there any SMS clients that are google voice friendly and cool? Like I said any advice, this is my first android phone and I want to make the most out of the experience. Thanks a lot guys.

You need to give people your gvoice number. I dont think there is any way to forward text messaging to google voice. Voice calls and voice mail, however, can be forwarded.

hello all , i was browsing through my HD2 running Android settings and i have noticed that we have text to speech, how do we activate text to speech, i have downloaded the voice data and nothing happens, am i missing something else???
also, is their an app that we are able to download to do speech to text, my friend has the sprint evo, and ive noticed that he has a mic icon on his keyboard and my does not...
PLEASE HELP ME OUT
try to install google's voice search found in android market. i've had the same problem until now
That's just an engine, you need a apps that actually use it. You can turn on the Accessibility from Settings to have everything on screen read back to you.
Should be able to find apps that will read emails and SMS back to you.
oh, and yes voice search you give yo the mic on the keyboard, press and hold to activate it. (by the way that's reverse of TTS)

OP is actually asking for text to speech, with speech to text as a "by the way" point at the end of the post. Read the post, not the title, and you'll see.
is there any way to set it so the phone wakes up when a new text is received? I frequently drive with the stereo WAY up and don't hear notifications and my car is highly modified, so it's not smooth enough that I'd feel it on vibrate. My previous phone used to wake up, which was PERFECT, I never missed a message.
I use SMS Popup. It turns on the screen when a SMS is received, and I also can setup different SMS notifications for contact. It's really nice to have different SMS audio alerts per contact.
The messaging app "GOSMS Pro" has that and its free!
Handcent does it as well
OR...
If you're riding around in your highly modified car with the music turned WAY up... Maybe you shouldn't be reading new text messages?
Yes, I'm probably old to you. Maybe I've accumulated a bit more wisdom, too?
+1 on handcent. This app is a life saver! Lol. It'll make ur phone platinum and chrome

Handcent can read your text messages out loud and you can talk to it to message back if needed.
This isn't nearly as direct as the other solutions but MIUI has an option for this built in. If you haven't tried it I recommend giving it a go!
Well here it is my fellow androids. We asked for it and Handcent fell through. We should all thank Handcent and their developers for this new big update. Keep in mind this app is still in Beta stage. However, I tested it for a couple of days and I was able to chat with my fellow iPhone lovers. I was also able to chat with verizon Galaxy Nexus, Thunderbolt and LG revolution. I havent had a chance to chat with none Verizon phones. You guys will be our testers. Please list all bugs here and Ill forward the list to the developer. So far there are two bugs with this build. The first bug is double notifications on group mms and the second one is blurry background images with Droid Razor phones
Setup:
1. You must make this app default messaging app for all MMS and SMS.
"settings"->application settings->Default Messaging Application-> All(SMS&MMS)
2. You must enable Thread Group Conversation. Its all the way down in application settings
"settings"->application settings->group messaging->check Thread Group conversation
3. MMS retrieval should be set to Auto unless you want to download each group message.
4. You might experience some lag as the group mms pour in one after another. I think this is normal cuz I do experience it on my Razor maxx using the stock app since it has this this feature built in. In addition, I asked my freind with iPhone 4s if he experiences lag when all these group messages pour in and he said yes. Sometimes he cant touch his phone until all the messages have been received
5. Be gentle on me if I missed any bugs. Im already in the Dog house in my wifes book for spending too much time on this project. This is the reason why the developer is releasing the app for public feedback.
File got updated:
Fixed double notification
fixed some bugs
This file not in market, so you guys are Handcent beta testers.

Loving the capability! It seems to be working well.
Have one question/bug. Some replies say "Me:" and they go to the group. Some replies say "Me to name: and they are going individually to the group it appears.
I did not do anything different I don't think on any of the replies but I may be missing something or this could be a bug.
Thanks for the great feature!

so testing it with cm9 on HTC evo 3D (sprint) doesn't seem to want to send group messages at all. Just get that continuous loading symbol and never sends. I'll test it on stock first and see if it is the problem with the rom and report back

The file has been update. Hopefully fix your issue.
So far I have had it "break" and resort to sending separate messages once. I have three theories as to why...
It may have been due to not completely removing my old Handcent beta first.
I was Texting with friends pretty frequently, and I noticed if I exit the thread and re-enter it would "convert to MMS", Maybe it drops out of MMS if you send several texts in a row?
The thread I was sending to had my google voice number in it, so I was essentially sending messages to myself at the same time.
Sometimes if you have a group message with say Joe Smith as a participant and a separate thread with Joe, getting the group text will show a notification for the separate thread and you have to do "mark as read" to fix it.
I am on a HTC Thunderbolt BTW.
Did not try the updated file yet, downloading now.

I think the new file supposed to fix this since they did find a bug. please post your results after you install new file
It works well for me.
Is there anything I can do about the <Subject: New Message> that shows up before every message?

An issue happens when you send texts too quickly it sends you back to inbox and doesn't display the messages. From what my friends tell me it displays something weird in their group chat. I have to visually see it to confirm. Love that it actually works though

How is it supposed to work? I tried it with my friend who has an iPhone but it didn't send messages via Internet service but normaly as SMS messages. Friend with iPhone tried to pull his sim card out of phone with no succes. Does it need any special settings to make it work?
Anyway I don't care much cause I have all my SMS free I just wanted to try that function.
I use HC Talk service to chat with my girlfriend everyday so there's no problem about functionless HC Service

In the first post is suggests going to settings>application settings>default messaging application>set it to all sms and mms.
Then settings again>application settings>scroll all the way down>check the thread group conversation box.
Then should work

Morning All. I was wondering is there a way I can group message and receive individual responses from others? I sent out a massive text one time and a friend of mine with a iPhone kept getting message from everyone else I sent the same message to. Any suggestions? It was quite embarrassing when that happened.

That is strange. I usually will text multiple peeps via email client and will receive a response from just one and it only comes to me. I have also text multiple peeps in the past and never heard of anyone getting others responses but who knows. I will have to test that
What messaging app are you using? I'm using the stock app and just adding multiple contacts individually. Not sure if this can be done but do you have groups set up that can be added in the messaging app? If so, this may be the difference. Sorry, I'm not a huge text user but will try to help if I can.
The SGS3 has that, SGS4 and iPhone. If you place several contacts in one text message they will all receive the original message but everyone else will get each others response. Person A sends Person B and C "Hello" in one text. B and C receive. C responds "Hey" and B also receives "Hey" as well. It does get annoying. My son was born last month and I sent a massive picture text, everyone received everyone's text response. So yeah....that is annoying. There is nothing under the settings for both phone and text for this. And I've spent a good 24 hours searching for a solution and nothing..... Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
P.S. Messaging app used is the stock SMS app for the Samsung phone.
